the topic of money at university has a special vocabulary that may be new to you. Here’s a quick translation guide for important terms that will soon be second nature.
academic merit ? T he minimum standard used in scholarship competitions based on academic merit is an average or mark of 80%
awards ? S cholarships, bursaries, and any other amounts given to students to help with their education Bursaries ? A warded based on financial need ? N ot loans – you don’t normally have to repay them ? S ee page 6
fees ? A dditional amounts charged for items such as co-op, Waterloo residences, student activities, and health coverage ? S ometimes used to include both tuition and fees ? S ee pages 4 and 5
late fees ? E xtra amounts charged by
universities if you don’t pay your tuition and fees on time or make arrangements to pay them later by signing a Promissory Note
oSaP ? O ntario Student Assistance Program – the student aid program for residents of Ontario
? P rovides interest-free loans while you’re a full-time student

Promissory note ? A Waterloo document you submit to Waterloo’s Finance Office/Student Accounts if you’re using OSAP,
scholarship, or bursary funds to pay your fees at a later date
? T his vital step ensures that you’re properly registered by the deadline ? I f you have not submitted a Promissory Note and have not paid your fees in full, you may be charged late fees or your enrollment may be cancelled ? S ee page 4
