I’ve been reporting on extraordinary people for 25 years as a television journalist, but this small Oregon town and the man at its center, Woody Davis, stand alone in my memory.

When I read a newspaper clip about the community’s reaction to Woody’s declining health, I knew that this would be a special story for my CBS Evening News series, On the Road (the transcript of which is below).

On the Road: Giving thanks to the community angel

On a high ridge above the Columbia River, just down from heaven, you’ll find an angel here in this small town.

Woody Davis, 69, is kind of a jack-of-all-trades. And although he’s never made much money at it, be all accounts, he has earned his wings. Here is some of what people in town have said of him:

“You have to chase him down to pay him sometimes.‖

“He’s uncommon, he’s special, he’s a gift that this community has had all these years.‖

That is why folks in this small town east of Portland are now going out of their way to thank Woody for the thousands of good deeds he’s done for them over the past 50 years. He helped plow cars out of snow, chopped wood, repaired farm equipment, and more.

Recently, they all got together to cut and stack his firewood for winter. A couple of guys fixed up his old pickup. Someone even built him a beautiful wooden box and invited the whole town to sign it.

Clint Woody’son, sai d all the work his dad did for people has been repaid tenfold. ―Bill Gates could not come to Corbett and buy this. You can’t buy the love that people have poured out for Dad.‖

A few months ago, Woody was diagnosed with ALS—Lou Gehrig’s disease. Doctors tel l him he has about six months. The disease, which attacks the nervous system, is already making it hard for him to lift much of anything or even talk. But his attitude remains unaffected.

CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman has won nearly two dozen Emmy See the original story on Woody Davis—with video—at https://www.doczj.com/doc/9e18786888.html,.

Elephants have four distinct personalities that help their hard survive in the African bush, scientists have found.

With their grey skin, mournful eyes and slow plodding gait, you could be forgiven for thinking elephants are uniformly melancholy(忧郁的)creatures. But scientists have now discovered the largest living land animals have personalities to match their size.

In a new study of African elephants, researchers have identified four distinct characters that are prevalent with a herd –the leaders, the gentle giants, the playful rogues and the reliable plodders.(辛勤工作的人)

Each of the types has developed to help the giant mammals survive in their harsh environment and are almost unique in the animal kingdom, according to the scientists.

Professor Lee and her colleague Cynthia Moss studied a herd of elephants in the Amboseli National Park in Kenya known as the EB family – famous for their matriarch(女家长)Echo before she died in 2009.

Using data collected over 38 years of watching this group, the researchers analysed them for 26 types of behaviour and found four personality traits tended to come to the fore.

The strongest personality to emerge was that of the leader unlike other animals, where leadership tends to be won by the most dominant and aggressive individual, the elephants instead respected intelligence and problem solving in their leader.

The playful elephants tended to be younger but were more curious and active. Eudora, a 40-year-old female in the herd, seemed to be the most playful, consistently showing this trait through out her life while playfulness in some of the other elephants declined with age.

Gentle elephants, which included two 27-year-old females Eleanor and Eliot, caressed and rubbed against others more than the others.

Those that were reliable tended to be those that were most consistent at making good decisions, helped to care for infants in the herd and were calm when faced with threats. Echo and her youngest daughter Ebony seemed to be the most reliable.

Professor Lee said that elephants with these traits tended to be the most socially integrated in the group while those who tended to be less reliable and pushy were more likely to split from the herd.

55.From the passage we get to know that .

A.the researchers reached their conclusion by analyzing the date.

Is the world going to end right in the middle of the upcoming holiday season? While that wouldn't be good for retail sales, many people feel that Dec. 21, 2012 is a date that will linger in our minds forever

The ancient Mayan civilization calendar is believed to end this year on Dec. 21. And somehow, through word-of-mouth, movies, books, the Internet, etc., a cult-like(有邪教色彩的)belief system has sprung up in our culture suggesting any number of awful things will take place on that date.

But where did all of these rumors actually start?

Many believe it goes back thousands of years to the ancient Sumerian culture who reportedly discovered a twelfth planet they called Nibiru -- aka Planet X -- which was predicted to have a close encounter with Earth in 2003.

When that didn't happen, a new Doomsday was moved to December 2012.

On the other hand, there are some who believe the December date heralds not doom and gloom, but a more positive transformative experience for Earth and its inhabitants. It all sound rather sletchy, especially to a scientist.

"It's all a hoax, and it's based on absolutely no factual information. None of the things that are supposed to happen are real, and so it's kind of hard to even have a scientific discussion about what they're worried about because there's no science there," said David Morrison, a leading space scientist and director of the Carl Sagan Center for Study of Life in the Universe at the SETI Institute in California.

SETI scientists are involved with the ongoing search for extraterrestrial intelligence, they also want to quiet any fears the public has about the alleged Doomsday. To that end, Morrison created a special Doomsday 2012 Fact Sheet in September that's posted on both SETI and NASA websites.

When Morrison was researching information for his Doomsday fact sheet, he didn't find anything that confirmed that the Mayans left us any dire predictions.

"The Maya scholars I've talked to say flat out they did not make any such predictions. The question then is does their calendar end? Well, that's not true, either, because there are written references to dates that are hundreds of years in the future, which indicates the calendar must keep going," he said. "So, this is not a Maya thing -- they don't think anything bad is going to happen.‖59.Why does the date Dec, 21, 2012 linger in many people’s minds forever?

A.It is promoted by businesses as a retell sales festival.

B.It is proved by the scientists to be the end of the earth.

C.It is regarded by many people as a doomsday.

D.It is recorded by historians as the end of the Mayan civilization.

60.According to many people, the rumors of the doomsday came from .

A.Mayan culture B.Sumerian culture

C.a discovery of a twelfth star D.an ancient legend about summer

61.The underlined word ―sketchy‖ in the sixth paragraph is closest in meaning to .

A.incomplete B.thorough C.convincing D.flexible 62.According to the Doomsday 2012 Fact Sheet created by Morrison, .

A.Few people worry about whether they will survive December 21

B.Mayans’ predictions are meaningful if you are a pessimist

C.the Maya calendar will carry on even If something bad happens

Teens who play mature-rated risk-glorifying(崇尚冒险的)video games may be more likely than those who don’t to become reckless drivers who experience increases in automobile accidents, police stops and willingness to drink and drive, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association. "Most parents would probably be disturbed to learn that we observed that this type of game play was more strongly associated with teen drivers being pulled over by the police than their parenting practices," said study lead author Jay G. Hull, PhD, of Dartmouth College. "With motor vehicle accidents the No. 1 cause of adolescent deaths, popular games that increase reckless driving may constitute even more of a public health issue than the widely touted association of video games and aggression."

Researchers conducted a longitudinal study involving more than 5,000 U.S. teenagers who answered a series of questions over four years in four waves of telephone interviews. The findings were published online in APA's journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture.

Fifty percent of the teens reported in the first interview that their parents allowed them to play mature-rated games and among those, 32 percent said they had played Spiderman II, 12 percent had played Manhunt and 58 percent had played Grand Theft Auto III. Playing video games such as Grand Theft Auto III, Manhunt and Spiderman II was associated with increases in sensation seeking, rebelliousness and self-reported risky driving, the study said. Higher rankings in sensation seeking(追求感官刺激) rebelliousness(叛逆性)were directly linked to risky driving habits, automobile accidents, being stopped by police and a willingness to drink and drive, according to the analysis.

Between the second and third interviews, teens who said they had been pulled over by the police increased from 11 percent to 21 percent; those who said they had a car accident went from 8 percent to 14 percent. In the third interview, when the teens were about 16 years old, 25 percent said "yes" when asked if they engaged in any unsafe driving habits. In the final interview when the teens were about 18, 90 percent said "yes" to at least one of the same risky driving habits: 78 percent admitted to speeding; 26 percent to tailgating; 23 percent to failure to yield; 25 percent to weaving in and out of traffic; 20 percent to running red lights; 19 percent to ignoring stop signs;

13 percent to crossing a double line; 71 percent to speeding through yellow lights; and 27 percent to not using a seatbelt.

63.We can learn from the words of the lead author Jay G. Hull that .

A.teenagers’ careless driving has become a public health issue

B.motor vehicle accidents have caused the most adolescent deaths

C.teen drivers are more likely to be pulled over by the police than their parents

D.the public mainly focus on the aggressive behaviors of teens brought about by games 64.The researchers conducted the study involving more than 5,000 teenagers by .

A.telephoning the teen interviews during four years

B.handing out and collecting questionnaires among them

C.organizing four online interviews among the teenagers

D.sending out volunteers to interview the teenagers face to face

65.Game such as Grand Theft Auto III affect the teens in the way that they may .

A.cause the teenagers to tend to be heavy drinkers

B.teach the teenagers some driving skills which are not practical in reality

C.arouse rebelliousness of teenagers so that they will have friction with their parents

D.encourage sensation seeking which will push teens to develop risky driving habits 66.Compared with the third interview, in the fourth interview the number of teens who admitted engaging in unsafe driving habits increased by .

A.6% B.10% C.25% D.65%

Whether MSN will retreat from the Chinese market has been a hot topic among remaining MSN users these days, though Microsoft has made it clear through different public statements that its global MSN service will be replaced by Skype by the first quarter of next year, except in the Chinese mainland. But this doesn't abate local people's anxiety toward the upcoming changes. Even if the service will continue in this market, will it still work effectively in connecting people in other regions where MSN is no longer in service?

I. Success of yesterday

MSN officially started its business in China in July 2004, and the Chinese version was released in May the following year. When MSN first set foot in china, it was highly acclaimed by local young people, especially while-collar workers. Compared with QQ, MSN was believed more formal. MSN did win many people's hearts thanks to its various advanced user experiences. "It is the earliest IM (instant messaging) software, and its interface looks faddish and friendly," said Wang, " Guanxiong, an IT manager. ―besides, its other functions like expressive icons, voice-enabled chatting, and video conferences were very innovative and catered to the market." II.

Now seven years after MSN entered the Chinese market, its influence cannot be compared with the success it had then. Fading out of MSN and turning to others like QQ, facebook and Weibo is becoming a trend. "Many of my friends don't actually log into MSN anymore," said Lu, "their account hasn't been updated for a long time."

With an ever-increasing choice of IM providers on the Internet today, the worsening experience on MSN is the main reason users are leaving. "Virus website links, junk ads, and unstable logging are really annoying," said Lu, adding that she now preferred QQ and Weibo. QQ improved its customer products all along, while MSN remained comparatively static.(静止的)For example, the commonly-used functions like "offline document transmitting" and "sectional drawing" in QQ are still not available on MSN.

III. Nostalgia (怀旧)? It's only natural

With the news that MSN will be faded out, netizens poured out their nostalgic feelings online.
