Four habits to live a happier life

Having a happier life is something we all always struggle for, and being happy includes so many aspects — mental, physical and spiritual — of our lives. One of the key principles of having a happier life is to always do things that bring us happiness. 1

Consider the following habits to improve your life and make it as happy as you possibly can.

Praise others.

Be kind to others, like praising them. 2 Don't be afraid to tell people how great they look, or how awesome their smile is. It'll do them good, and do you good too!

Focus on the present moment.

Take some time every day to focus on the present moment. 3 Try not to think about negative past experiences and hug the time you have now. You'll soon find that even the slightest thing that you do at this moment can bring about happiness for many hours and days to come.

Learn to control your emotions.

4 And it's definitely not worth the emotions. Don't compromise on your happiness just because someone is trying to pick a fight. Just let it go (不要理会) and be happier.

5

Just before you go to bed, write down at least one wonderful thing that happened. It might be something as small as a child's laugh or something as huge as a

million-dollar deal. Whatever it is, be grateful for that day because it will never come again.

A. End each day with thankfulness.

B. Of course, everyone loves to be happy.

C. It is the only certain time we have in our life.

D. It can make people happy and give them confidence.

E. It's not worth the argument when your partner is testing your patience.

F. So it is important to develop the right habits to ensure we live a happier life.

G. Try to set aside a few hours a day, doing something fun to make yourself happy.

Do women talk more than men? 1 According to the latest research from the United States of America, men and women talk such different languages that it is like people from two different cultures trying to communicate. Professor Deborah Tannen, of Georgetown University, has noticed differences in the style of boys' and girls' conversations from an early age. According to her study, little girls' conversation is less clear than boys' and expresses more doubts. 2

These differences will continue into adult life, she says. In public conversations, men talk most and interrupt other speakers more than women do. In private conversations, men and women speak in almost equal amounts. 3 Professor Tannen believes that, for women, private talking is a way to establish and test intimacy (亲密). For men, private talking is a way to explore the power structure (结构) of a relationship.

4 “When a woman teaches another woman,” says Professor Tannen, “she is more likely to take a sharing approach and to encourage her student to join in. When a man teaches a woman, however, he wants to show that he has more knowledge and power in conversation.

5 ”

Some scientists who are studying speech think that the brain is preprogrammed for language. As we are usually taught to speak by women, it seems likely that the brain must have a sexual bias (偏向) in its programming; otherwise, male speech patterns would not arise at all.

A. And he uses his language to show this.

B. Do men talk in the same way as women?

C. However, they say things in a different style.

D. Women are far more silent than men in public conversations.

E. Little boys use conversation to establish status with their listeners.

F. More women are encouraged to help each other, talking about their doubts.

G. Teaching is one job where the differences between men's and women's ways of talking show.

C

The exciting game of football

Football is one of the most popular sports in the US. 1 That kind involves kicking a round ball into a net and is called soccer in North America. American football, however, uses a ball that is pointy (尖的) on both ends. While it does include some kicking, there is more throwing and catching involved.

In football, there are 11 players from each team on the field at one time. Each team tries to move the ball across the opposing team's goal line to score. The quarterback (四分卫) throws the ball, and the person who catches it tries to run past the opposing team's players. The way to stop someone running with the ball is to tackle him. That means hitting right against him and trying to knock him down to the ground. 2

The biggest professional football organization in the US is the National Football League (NFL). The NFL championship game is called the Super Bowl, and it is one of the most watched television events around the globe. 3 For example, millions of toilets are flushed (冲洗) at the same time during half-time. Also, 14,500 tons of chips are consumed during the game.

Most sports fans are happy with just sitting in the stands and cheering on their teams. 4 They dress themselves in their team's colors. Some of the excitement happens before the games even begin. Fans gather and hang out in the parking lots outside the stadiums and have huge parties. 5 There are also endless amounts of sodas and beers. All of these combined with the game itself make football one huge and popular social event.

A. However, it isn't the game of football played in other parts of the world.

B. As a result, professional players have to be strong and quick.

C. It is an exciting sport that can sometimes get pretty rough.

D. There are many amazing facts about the Super Bowl.

E. It is also the wealthiest sports league in the world.

F. Everything from sandwiches to chips is served.

G. For some, that is not enough.

D

There are a number of tips that you can follow to help you find a job that suits your personality.

List your strong and weak points

Before you start your job search, take some time to think about your strong and weak points. 1 If you are excellent at managing your time, for example, a job in project management, or one that involves organising others, could be perfect.

Ask others for their opinions

Although you should know yourself better than anyone else, there are times when a second opinion is needed. 2 They may come up with ideas that you haven't considered. You should, however, make sure that they aren't so protective of you that they persuade you not to push yourself, or encourage you so much that you aim too high.

Find out what potential jobs involve

3 Make sure you do as much research as possible to determine exactly what you will have to do. An office job may sound very safe if you are shy, but if you then find that you have to give regular presentations, you may not be cut out for it after all.

4

When looking for a job, many people have an idea of what they would like to be in the future. However, that is often little more than a dream and, even if it is possible to reach that goal, it may involve years of hard work that you don't enjoy. 5 If you can find a job that mirrors what makes you happy in life, then the chances are that you will enjoy it and it will match your personality type.

A. Take a personality test

B. Consider what delights you

C. Think about what makes you happy and then analyse why.

D. Finding a job that suits your personality is very important.

E. Ask your friends and family what sort of job they think would suit you best.

F. Sometimes, it isn't immediately obvious what a job will involve until you start it.

G. More importantly, think about how they would affect your ability to do particular jobs.

C项中的It指代the present moment。

4. E。本段建议大家学会控制自己的情绪。E项“当你的搭档考验你的耐心时,你不值得为此跟他争论”符合本段语境。其中的It's not worth和下一句中的it's definitely not worth相呼应。

We first met at the All-City Chorus. 1 We stood side by side in the chorus, and he always made me look good, even if I missed a note. Bud went to an all-white high school in a beautiful, all-white neighborhood. There were very few big buildings in his community. As a matter of fact, you would have to walk four or five blocks to get to the nearest shopping center. 2 In his basement, he had a complete mini-gym. In his bedroom, he had a nice desk, complete with reference books and his own little TV on which he could play his video games. 3 My family lived in a nice apartment in an all-black housing project. Our project housed many families, so we were used to living in small crowded houses. 4 There were all kinds of stores nearby.
