The painter Georgia O’Keeffe was born in Wisconsin in 1887 and grew up on her family’s farm. At seventeen she decided to be an artist and left the farm for schools in Chicago and New York, but she never lost her connection with the land. Like most painters, O’Keeffe painted the things that were most important to her, and nearly all her works are simplified portrayals(写生) of nature.

O’Keeffe became famous when her paintings were discovered and exhibited in New York

by the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, whom she married in 1924. During a visit to New Mexico in 1929, O’Keeffe was so moved by the landscape and broad skies of the western desert that she began to paint its images. When her husband died in 1946, she moved to New Mexico and used the desert, colorful flowers, rocks, hills, and the sky as subjects for her paintings. Although O’Keeffe painted her best known works in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, she continued to produce works to the western desert until her death in 1986.

O’Keeffe is widely considered to have been a pioneering American modernist painter. While most early modern American artists were strongly influenced by European art, O’Keeffe’s position was more independent. She establishe d her own style. Almost from the beginning, her work was more American than other painters in color, light, space and natural forms.

21. The main idea of this passage is that __________.

A. O’Keeffe was an extraordinary modern American painter

B. O’Keeffe was the best painter of her generation

C. O’Keeffe liked to paint what was familiar to her

D. O’Keeffe used colors and shapes that are too simple

22. Alfred Stieglitz ________.

A. was a film director

B. married O’Keeffe in 1924

C. died in 1986

D. became famous when his paintings were exhibited in New York

23. Which of the following is most similar to O’Keeffe’s relationship with nature?

A. A photographer’s relationship with a model.

B. A writer’s relationship with a publisher.

C. A student’s re lationship with a book.

D. A carpenter’s relationship with a hammer.

24. Why is O’Keeffe considered an artistic pioneer?

A. Because her work became influential in Europe.

B. Because she painted the American Southwest.

C. Because her paintings had a definite American style.

D. Because she painted things that were familiar to her.

B

A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That’s the finding of a scientific study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who ate at least an ounce of salt water fish per day than those who never ate fish.

The Dutch research is one of three human studies that hold the belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart. Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths from heart attacks each year. But researchers have noticed that the rate of heart disease is lower in countries that eat more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who eat about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, who daily eat fish about more than 3 ounces.

For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate

no fish.

At the start of the study, the average fish consumption (消耗) was about two-thirds of an ounce each day with more men eating thin fish than fatty fish.

During the next two decades(十年), 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true, not considering other factors(因素) such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol.

25. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

A. The Dutch research has proved that eating fish can help to prevent heart disease.

B. Heart doctors won’t call at your house so long as you keep eating fish each day.

C. Among all the diseases, heart disease is the most dangerous in America.

D. There is a low rate of heart disease in Japan and Greenland.

26. The text is mainly about ________.

A. the high rate of heart disease

B. the great changed in people’s diet

C. the fish consumption in some countries

D. the influence of fish eating on people’s health

27. How many lives could probably be saved each year in the United States by eating fish according to the Dutch study?

A. 152,000

B. 110,000

C. 275,000

D. 550,000

28. We can conclude that _______.

A. heart disease usually happens in America

B. no heart disease happens in Japan and Greenland

C. high blood pressure can make people die

D. eating fish regularly can make people live longer

C

“No Other Sto r y,” by Dr. Cuthbert Soup. $16.99. Ages 8-12.

This is the third book in a series that tells the story of the Cheeseman family, which is dad Ethan Cheeseman and his three “smart, polite and attractive children.” (The reason why there is no mother is central to the story, which is about time travel, dinosaurs and delicious ice cream.) Even if you haven’t read the earlier books in the series, you’ll find this story exciting and mostly laugh-out-loud funny. “The Santa Trap,” by Jonathan Emmett. $15.95. Age 5 and older.

What made people call banana a banana and a pineapple a pineapple and not something else?

Actually there is a reason behind the names given to each and everything; be it a fruit, vegetable, an animal or lifeless things like stars, planets, etc. However, sometimes the names are misleading. Take the example of pineapple: it doesn’t come from a pine tree, nor is it an apple.

The pineapple is native of southern Brazil and Paraguay in South America. Native Indians spread this fruit, called Ananas, through South and Central America to the West Indies. In 1493, Columbus, on his voyage to the Caribbean, found the fruit on the island of Guadaloupe.

To the European eye, this curious new fruit had a rough appearance like a pinecone(松塔) and inside the fruit had a firm center core like an apple. So combining the two they called it “pineapple”.

In Europe, sweets and fresh tropical(热带的) fruit were not common. They were transported at great cost from various voyages and journeys. In such conditions, this ripe yellow fruit, which was bursting with natural sweetness, made the pineapple a popular fruit. It was such a luxury that King CharlesⅡof England ordered to paint a picture where he is seen receiving a pineapple as a gift! For many years after, rich Europeans carefully grew the pineapple in their own greenhouses.

33. The question asked in the first paragraph is used to _________.

A. tell the difference between bananas and pineapples

B. express the puzzlement of the writer

C. ask readers to give a clear answer

D. attract readers’attention to the topic

34. Where are pineapples earliest grown?

A. South America.

B. Northern Africa.

C. North America.

D. The West Indies.

35. The passage mainly tells us _______.

A. what helps pineapples spread around the world

B. why pineapples have natural sweetness

C. where it is suitable to plant pineapples

D. how the pineapple gets its name and its spreading

Five steps to better handwriting

Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 36 Here are five steps that really work!

Get a great grasp

Try this---hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 37 Hold it in place with your thumb(拇指), and your index(食指) and middle fingers.

Let the lines be your guide

Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size. __38__ Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.

Slow down

If your handwriting is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.

Lower the pressure

39 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.

40

Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not school work, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.

A. Play games.

B. Ask for more advice.

C. So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.

D. You’ve been writing since you were a little kid.

E. Some kids press down really hard when they write.

F. The good news is that everyone can improve their handwriting.
