Pre-reading Activities

My brother does not sweat the life he could never have. Instead he focuses on what he can do—to love. For many, if not all of us these days, it is a constant struggle to get somewhere in life. There is just so much to learn, so much is changing every day, that I hardly have time to breathe, let alone love and care about the people around me. My brother though, always makes it his first priority. He never got the chance to go to a regular school or compete for a decent job; unfortunately, he was born with some brain damage making learning a challenge. He never had trouble learning how to love, though. And he knows how to teach others to love as well.

1. Because he was born with brain damage and learning was a challenge for him.

2. He made love his first priority because he never had trouble learning how to love.

KEY TO EXERCISES

cPre-reading 々tivities

I'm tired. And I feel guilty. Why? I,m tired because I get so much exercise. I feel guilty because no matter how much I exercise, I never feel like it's enough. I asked two exercise experts around town what would be an ideal exercise program for someone like me, an average, healthy, 45-year-old adult. First, they said that each exercise program should be geared to an individual's needs and their attitude towards exercise. Then here's what they suggested to me:

Exercise three times a week for at least 20 minutes at a time. Choose moderate-intensity exercises when possible. They are best for avoiding injury and burnout. Do exercises that work the large muscle groups like walking. Using “lifestyle” exercises in the program also makes the program easier to maintain. Lifestyle exercises include bicycling, climbing stairs, swimming, and brisk walking. These exercises work.

It is reported that Chinese students are doing far better than American students in their studies. What are the reasons?

That Chinese have strong belief in hard work is the first of the two main factors contributing to Chinese students' outstanding performance. Chinese students believe that through hard work and effort, people can perfect themselves and gain a better future for themselves. And they have also set higher standards for themselves. Charlie Chaplain was born in 1889 in London. His childhood was one of extreme poverty and he did not have much schooling. But Charlie showed a gift for acting and longed to be an actor. In 1910 Charlie went to the United States for the first time as part of a troupe and thus started his formal acting career. He was very successful in his acting and made about 80 films throughout his life. After World War II,Chaplin did not stop to rest on his earlier success. He gave up the Little Tramp character and tried to grow as an artist. Later Chaplin settled in Switzerland and stayed there for the rest of his life. He died in Switzerland on December 25, 1977 and the world lost one of the greatest creative artists of the 20th century.

Pre-reading Activities

I remember it all very well. It was a Sunday morning and I was outside watering the garden. About

20 minutes before it happened, every dog on the block started barking and they would not stop. I thought, ‘‘So much for my peaceful Sunday morning." I had no idea how right I was. There was something else peculiar: There were tons of worms crawling out of their holes. My neighbor, an older woman who lived alone, like me, was also watering her garden.

"Helen, do you have worms crawling in your garden too?" I asked in a loud enough voice to be heard over the fence between our yards.

"Oh, it's going to be a big one," she replied.

I thought, "What a strange reply," and then it hit, the strongest earthquake in 50 years.
