Part IV Reading Comprehension

Directions: Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one you think is the

best answer.

Passage 1 (L2 P30)

Learning a foreign language is not a matter of reading some grammar rules and memorizing some vocabulary words—although those are important activities not to be ignored. Acquiring a language is learning a skill, not a body of information. It’s as much like learning to swim or ride a bike. That is, you must not only understand the ideas and concepts, have information at hand, but

also make your body accustomed to using that information in physical activity: in this case the physical activity involved is speaking, listening, writing and reading.

You need, then, not only to memorize and understand, but also to practice!

Here are a few brief suggestions on effective practice/study techniques.

1. Make your mouth or hand do what your mind is learning. Study out loud. Do go to the lab and work on the tapes. Study with a friend, thus involving yourself in speaking and listening. Try to write sentences or a short paragraph using the skills you have practiced orally.

2. Study day-by-day. You cannot get by in a foreign language course by cramming (临时抱佛脚) at the last minute. You may be able to “learn” vocabulary items that way, but you cannot teach your mouth to use them in sentences.

3. Occasionally go back and review “old”topics and vocabulary. Language learning is accumulative (累积的). You learn new skills on the basis of old ones. The more you “recycle”familiar information and skills, the better you will be able to absorb new ones.

4. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Self-consciousness (害羞) can be a mighty obstacle to learning a language. Perhaps part of the reason small children readily acquire languages is that they are not afraid of making mistakes.

1)The first paragraph of the passage has been written to emphasize that__________.

A. learning to swim is very difficult

B. memorizing vocabulary words is necessary in language learning

C. language learning is a process of acquiring different language skills

D. understanding the ideas and concepts is more important than anything else

2)One of the advantages of studying with a friend is that__________.

A. one studies better in a friendly atmosphere

B. friends can share tapes or other learning materials

C. it strengthens the friendship between twp friends

D. it makes one talk in a particular language

3)Cramming should be avoided while learning a language because__________.

A. one may not find enough time to use at the last minute

B. anything learnt that way can hardly be put into use

C. nothing can be learnt through cramming

D. it is of little use to study without a clear purpose

4)The purpose of reviewing old topics is_________.

A. to avoid making mistakes in the future

B. to throw away the old, useless information

C. to build up a good foundation for new skills

D. to appreciate the good ideas contained in them

5)Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. A Few Brief Suggestions on Study a Foreign Language

B. An Introduction to Language Teaching and Learning

C. Why Learning a Foreign Language Is More Difficult Than Anything Else

D. Why Children Are Capable of Learning a Language Better Than Grown-ups

Passage 2 (L4 P66)

Some researchers have indicated that the vast increase of women in the workforce may

decrease marriage chances. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. On the other hand, women’s financial state may also encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man were important in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to postpone marriage because the couple cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy rebounds(回弹), the number of marriages also rises.

Coincident(一致)with the increase in women working outside the home is the increase in divorce rates. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wife’s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider(养家者)may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible. Stresses grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. Considering high unemployment, inflationary problems(通货膨胀), and slow growth in real earnings, a working wife can increase household income and relieve some of these pressing financial burdens. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family’s financial and emotional stability.

Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife without a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union.

Also, a major part of women’s inequa lity in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. With higher earning capacity and status occupations outside of the home comes the capacity to exercise power within the family. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.

1) The word “hypothesis” (Line 2, Para.1) is closest in meaning to “_____”.

A. assumption

B. signal

C. idea

D. clue

2) It is said in the passage that when the economy slides, _____.

A. men would choose working women as their marriage partners

B. more women would get married to seek financial security

C. even working women would worry about their marriages

D. more people would prefer to remain single for the time being

3) If women find fulfillment through work outside the home, _____.

A. they are more likely to control their marriage partners

B. their husbands are expected to do more housework

C. their marriage ties can be strengthened

D. they tend to put their career before marriage

4) One reason why women with no career may seek a divorce is that_____.

A. they feel that they have been robbed of their freedom

B. they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbands

C. they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectations

D. they tend to suspect their husbands’ loyalty to their marriage

5) Which of the following statements can best summarize the author’s view in the passage?

A. The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country.

B. Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle for real equality in marriage.

C. In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent.

D. The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case.

Passage3 (L7 P113)

Looking through my high-school yearbook, I was amazed by how similar everyone looked. People who stood out were few and far between. Thinking about it now, I realize that individuality is endangered. Everyone wants to look, act and sound like everyone else. This makes no sense, considering we are told from an early age to "be yourself." If we are told to be individuals, why is fitting in such an issue?

The media has a huge influence on youth. If you turn on MTV, you'll see the epitome (范例) of what is considered "cool." What surprises me is that people feel they need to look and dress a certain way to be cool. Those who don't fit this mold are considered nerds.

Television figures and celebrities are major role models; teens and preteens alike strive to match their favorite celebrity's look, but if people need to look like others to find a sense of self-worth, then the problem is beyond individuality. The problem becomes teens' lack of self-esteem, contributing to their need to conform. People conform to blend in and go unnoticed.

If society could implement programs to teach kids self-esteem, then lack of individuality would no longer be an issue. Teen suicide rates would probably decrease, too. If teenagers are comfortable with who they are, then suicide would not be such an oft-chosen option. Teaching individuality would lessen the pressure on teens to fit in, and would create a healthier society.

Lack of individuality plagues society as a whole. Those who have the courage and confidence to express themselves are the "coolest" people. In a world of conformity made up of black and white, it is good to throw a hint of the rainbow in every once in a while just for kicks and self-esteem.

1) The underlined phrase “stood out” refers to_____.

A. be unique in character

B. endure hardships

C. be noticeable by queer looks

D. get up from some places

2) Teens want to be considered “cool” because_____.

A. they believe media would teach them how to be themselves

B. they tend to imitate theirs idols of television celebrities who usually represent social fashion

C. they want to be different from the others

D. they want to step into a healthier society

3) Teaching individuality would _____.

A. let them pay more attention to health

B. stop teens’ dream of being cool

C. increase the peer pressure

D. help teens to express themselves and build up a sense of self-worth

4) It is implied in the passage that _____.

A. peer pressure for being cool indirec tly leads to teens’ suicide

B. teens tend to choose suicide because they can’t find self-value

C. teens tend to look alike in appearance

D. teens are confident to express themselves

5) This passage can be titled as _____.

A. Harms of Individuality.

B. Individuality and Suicide.

C. Being Cool Endangers Individuality.

D. How to Build up Self-esteem.

Passage 4 (L8 P127)

The octopus’s reputation as a human killer isn’t simply an exaggeration — it is a total myth. The octopus can indeed be a deadly hunter, but only of its natural prey. Clams, mussels, crabs, lobsters and an occasional sick or unwary fish have reason to be frightened of this multi-armed predator, but a person is much too large to interest even the biggest octopus. Even a giant enough octopus is much smaller than most people imagine. Far from being large enough to engulf a submarine, as monster octopus in movies have been known to do, the largest octopi, found on the Pacific coast, weigh around 110 pounds and grow to a diameter of no more than ten feet.

The hard, parrot-like beak of an octopus is not used for attacking deep-sea divers, but for cutting open crabs and lobsters. Indeed, the octopus possesses such a tiny throat that it cannot swallow large pieces of meat. It feeds instead by pouring digestive juices into its victims, and then sucking up the soupy remains. A clam or scallop that finds itself in the grasp of an octopus has only a short time to live. But human beings are perfectly safe. Still, people rarely care to venture close enough to these timid creatures to get a good look at them.

1) This passage is mainly about ______.

A. the horrors of the octopus

B. octopi and their behavior

C. the largest octopus in the world

D. the octopus’s deadly hunting method

However, clean energy technologies, including renewable energy and combined heat and power, have fewer impacts than other sources of electricity generation. To learn about the environmental impacts of electricity generation technologies, click on an energy source below. How clean is the electricity I use? In the United States, electricity is generated in many different ways, with a wide variation in environmental impact. Traditional methods of electricity production contribute to air quality problems and the risk of global climate change. With the advent of electric customer choice, many electricity customers can now choose the source of their electricity. In fact, you might now have the option of choosing cleaner, more environmentally friendly sources of energy. How can I make a difference? The energy decisions we make every day can encourage the development of new power sources, save natural resources, and help ensure that the quality of our environment is preserved. In many parts of the country, consumers now have the opportunity to choose the source of the power that is delivered to their home or business—including energy derived from renewable sources. "Renewable energy" generally refers to electricity supplied from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power (energy supplied by the sun), geothermal (energy created from the extreme heat contained in liquid rock—called magma(岩浆)—within the Earth's core), hydropower (energy derived from the movement of water as it flows downstream), and various forms of biomass (fuel from sources such as trees, wood and agricultural wastes and fuel crops). Why? Yes. I’d like to make friends with loyal people. In my opinion,a friend is a person who can share his/hers happiness with you, who can lend you a shoulder when you cry,who can give you a hand when you are in trouble without asking for anything in return. In a word,a friend in need is a friend indeed, I think a loyal people can do the things which were mentioned above for his/hers true friend. So I prefer to make friends with loyal people, and I also believe I am a loyal people who you can make friends with. 2) How do you make friends? Please comment on “a friend you buy isn’t worth the price”. First,I’d like to talk to him to find out whether we have the same interest with each other. If the answer is YES,then we have the foundation to develop a friendship. The next days, all we need to do is to treat each other by heart and soul. 3) How valuable is friendship in a person’s life? How can we keep friendship alive? As for me, I regard friendship as a very important part in my life.Just imagine a life, there’s no one to be your friend. What life could be if you had no friend to talk to , no friend to comfore you and cheer you up when you were having a hard time,no friend to lend you a hand when you needed help …… Life without friends is unthinkable ... We have to do hard work to build up and sustain our friendship. First, let your friends know that you really care about them. It’s important to give some cues to your friends. Be sure your friend knows that she is cared about.Second, try to be with your friends when they are in trouble when they need you. Keeping friendship alive is not only to say some sweet words, but need some real action. 4) What does friendship mean to you? What kind of friends do you think are true friends? It's a fantastic experience in whole of my life. Friendship to me is what water to fish.I can't live without a real friend. 2问见(1) 5) How can we get along well with other people? To begin with, we need to be honest with others and always say what we mean. Lies will surely make people stay far away from us in the long run. After all, honesty is the best policy. Second, we have to be humble enough. If we are proud in public, we can hardly win other's respect, not to mention "friendship" . Finally, we must not be selfish. We should learn how to show concern for others. As long as we abide[?'ba?d] by what is mentioned above, we will find it easy to get along well with others.
