Reading Comprehension(35 minutes)

single line through the center.

Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is “Don’t !”. But it is usele ss to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, though the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a repertory company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, looking after the furniture, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed. The hours are long and the salary is tiny. But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy, waiting for the chances of working with a better company, or perhaps in films or television.

Of course, some people have unusual chances which lead to fame and success without this long and dull training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his big car. He told the driver to stop, and he got out to speak to the girl. He asked her if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and at first she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to tell Connie that he was serious. Then an appointment was made for her to go to the studio the next day. The test was successful. They gave her some necessary lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. Of course, she was given a more dramatic name, which is now world-famous. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!

21.According to the passage, the main reason why young people should be discouraged from becoming actors is____.

Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

The traditional two-parents family is fast giving way in the America of the 1980s to households in which one adult must juggle the often enormous demands of making a living and raising children.

For many, single parenthood is synonymous with economic need. More than 3 million

single-parent families live in poverty, according to the Census Bureau, and joblessness, plus cuts in public assistance, has helped drive up the number of poor children in such families by about 20 percent in just three years. The biggest burden falls on households that are headed by single mothers. Nearly half of these families are below the poverty as“ the most compelling social fact ”of the last 10 years.

This deprivation is not only hard on its victims but expensive for taxpayers since single women and their offspring receive 40 to 80 percent of the benefits in various welfare programs that cost the government a total of 40 billion dollars a year. Despite cuts in benefits averaging 10 percent, rising number of eligible women are likely to keep the overall cost up, according to

economist Alice Rivlin, former director of the Congressional Budget office.

Fanning the single-parent spiral are two dramatic offshoots of the sexual revolution: divorce and unwed(未婚的)motherhood. The divorce rate has doubled in the last 15 years, and the number of illegitimate births has more than doubled to 700,000 annually. One tenth of white children and more than one half of black children are now born out of wedlock. What’s more, there is a strong tendency now for women and teenagers who have illegitimate children to keep them rather than put them up for adoption.

Typical is Rufina Nera of Los Angeles. When she became pregnant at 15,abortion was never mentioned in her home.Instead, her mother encouraged her to have the child, says Nera, adding:“She even gave a baby shower for me.”

Now, Nera shares a crowded bedroom with her 2-year-old daughter as well as her sister. She holds no hope of help from the father, although she remarked during the only time he saw the child that she was prettier than his other illegitimate baby. Even so, Nera tries to keep her attention on two goals: moving into her own apartment and getting enough education to become a secretary or a nurse. Her first step along that path is attending Rarnona High School, an ”opportunity school“ w here she and 110 other girls study while their babies are cared for in a nursery.

26.What effect does joblessness and cuts in public assistance have on children of single-parent

families?

A) Another 3 million of them live in poverty.

B) The number of them increased by about 20 percent in just three years.

C) The number of them increased by about 3 percent in the 1980s.

D) They were not affected at all.

27.How much money do single women and their children get from welfare programs every

year?

A) 40 to 80 billion dollars.

B) 16 to 40 billion dollars.

C) 32 to 40 billion dollars.

D) 16 to 32 billion dollars.

28.We can come to the conclusion that ____.

A) 60 percent of American children are now born illegitimately

B) at least 50 percent of black children are now born illegitimately in America

C) 60 percent of American children were born illegitimately in the 1960s

D) at least 60 percent of American children were born illegitimately in the 1960s

29.What will probably happen to most illegitimate children?

A) They will be kept by their fathers.

B) They will be kept by their grandparents.

C) They will be kept by their mothers.

D) They will be adopted by someone else.

30.What does Nera do for the preparation for becoming a secretary or a nurse?

A) She is working in a nursery.

B) She is moving into her own apartment.

C) She is studying in a high school.

D) She is asking help from the father.

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

In managing information resources, the medium may be the key to an effective system. The medium is a vehicle, a tool, or a container for holding information; the information itself is the thing of value.

Three popular categories of information media are paper, films and electronic storage devices. The media choice must not be viewed as a choice among these three, however; it must be viewed as an opportunity to select from a multitude of media possibilities in combinations that build effective systems. In many instances the person responsible for information resource management is not the person who determines the medium in which information will be created. In such a case, the manager of a firm’s information resources faces a challenge in making a significant contribution to the organization’ s objectives.

For effective management of information resources, media conversion may be necessary. Examples include keying or scanning pager documents to convert them to electronic media. Other processes convert electronic media from one format to another. For example, disk files created on one system may not be compatible with another system. Various hardware and software combinations can be used to convert files to formats that equipment will accept. For information generated within organizations, this necessity of making systems compatible may be eliminated by cooperative planning. However, very little control can be exercised over the media used to generate information that comes to your organization from the outside. The medium for information may be selected to satisfy a need that exists when information is created and communicated. For example, a person record may be created because of its portability and because no special equipment is necessary for later references to that information; electronic transmission may be selected because it is the fastest means of communicating information. A firm may use electronic mail because a network already exists for on-line computer

communication. The additional application may cost less than postage to mail paper memos.

31.Which of the following can best sum up the passage?

A) Media Selection in Managing Information Resources.

B) The Importance and Necessity of Media Conversion.

C) Three Categories of Information Media.

D) Various Means of Communicating Information.

32.The first paragraph aims at telling the reader____.

A) the importance of information resources management

B) the relationship between the medium and information

C) the great variety of media for holding information

D) the numerous resources of information

33.Which of the following statements is true according to the author?

A) Paper is the best storage device.

B) People have three choices in selecting information media.

C) It is better to let the person responsible for information resource management determine media.

D) The manager should build an effective system by selecting a good combination of different media.

34.For effective management of information resources, the manager should ____.

A) convert all paper documents to electronic media

B) make media conversion when necessary

C) control the media used to generate information both inside and outside his organization

D) use one format in processing information

35.The main idea of the last paragraph is that ____.

A) paper record is the most convenient medium or later reference

B) electronic mail costs less than postage to mail paper memos

C) different media for information may be selected for different purposes

D) by using different media, a firm can create various information for its objectives

Passage Four

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

The decline of traditional religion in the West has not removed the need for men and women to find a deeper meaning behind existence. Why is the world way it is and how do we, as

conscious individuals, fit into the great scheme?

There is a growing feeling that science, especially what is known as the new physics, provides answers where religion remains vague and faltering. Many people in search of a meaning to their lives are finding enlightenment in the revolutionary developments at the frontiers science.Much to the bewilderment of professional scientists,quasi-religious cults are being formed around such unlikely topics as quantum physics,space-time relativity, black holes and the big bang.

How can physics, with its reputation for cold precision and objective materialism, provide such fertile soil for the mystical? The truth is that the spirit of scientific enquiry has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past 50 years. The twin revolutions of the Theory of Relativity, with its space-warps and timewarps, and the quantum theory, which reveals the shadowy and unsubstantial nature of atoms, have demolished the classical image of a clockwork universe slavishly unfolding along a predetermined pathway. Replacing this sterile mechanism is a world full of shifting indeterminism and subtle interactions which have no counterpart in daily experience.

To study the new physics is to embark on a journey of wonderment and paradox, to glimpse the universe in a novel perspective, in which subject and object, mind and matter, force and field, become intertwined. Even the creation of the universe itself has fallen within the province of scientific enquiry.

The new cosmology provides, for the first time, a consistent picture of how all physical structures, including space and time, came to exist out of nothing. We are moving towards an understanding in which matter, force, order and creation are unified into a single descriptive theme.

Many of us who work in fundamental physics are deeply impressed by the harmony and

order which pervades the physical world. To me the laws of the universe, from quarks to quasars, dovetail(吻合)together so felicitously that the impression there is something behind it all seems overwhelming. The laws of physics are so remarkably clever that they can surely only be a manifestation of genius.

C) responding to scientific progress

D) developing in strange ways

Translation(15 minutes)

Directions:Read the following passage carefully and complete it by translating each Chinese sentence or clause into an English one to suit the context. Please write your versions in space provided below the passage.

For many young people, the late 1960s was a period of revolution against the moral values that had been the strength and pride of the past generations. They did not want to be hard-working and thrifty \[象前辈那样\](71). They rejected the idea that \[必须先尽义务后享受\](72), and that individuals must make sacrifices when it is necessary for the good of their children or of their community. They condemned patriotism as the cause of wars and rejected all forms of authority——[不论是政府中的,宗教团体中的,学校中的还是家庭中的](73). All these

narrow ideas, they declared, were things of the past and had always been wrong anyway.

It was a distressing time for their elders. Previously happy parents found themselves\[被他们的年轻造反派不看在眼里\](74), who accused them of \[太为钱操心\](75)and too anxious to impress the neighbors. “True success,” the young people explained, “is not a matter of money or position. It’s a matter of self-fulfillment. And self-fulfillment consists of reaching one’s goals and achieving happiness in one’s way \[不用去理会任何约束、责任或别人的看法\](76). We do have a duty to ourselves that is more important than duty to others, even to our own children.”

Most parents \[感到难以接受子女们的这种态度\](77). They themselves had been brought up to respect traditional values; they had also learned to respect money \[因为在他们的青少年时期钱来之不易\](78). They had married in the late 1930s or early 1940s at a time when it was

explained again and again that an unhappy childhood produces emotionally disturbed adults. \[已婚夫妇的首要责任\](79), therefore, was to think of their children’s happiness. On the other hand, \[在爸爸妈妈做出牺牲的同时\](80), they expected their children to obey the rules of “nice” behavior, and to grow up into adults that parents can be proud of. These were precisely the ideas that the young rebels of the 1960s rejected.

Passage One

In Amer ica, where labor costs are so high,“do-it-yourself” is a way of life. Many people repair own cars, build their own garages, even rebuild their own houses. Soon many of them will also be writing their own books. In Hollywood there is a company that publishe s children’s books with the help of computers. Although other book companies also publish that way, this company is not like the others. It allows the reader to become the leading character in the stories with the help of computers. Here is how they do it. Let us suppose the child is named Jenny. She lives in New York, and has a dog named Hody. The computer uses this information to make up a story with pictures. The story is then printed up. A child who receives such a book might say, “this book is

about me,” so the company calls itself the “Me-Books Publishing Company.”

Children like the me-books because they like to see in print their own names and the names of their friends and their pets. But more important, in this way readers are much more interested in reading the stories. Me-books are helping a child to learn how to read.

11.Why do Americans do most things by themselves?

12.What distinguishes this company from the others?

13.What are the “Me-books”?

Passage Two

Robert Edwards was blinded in an automobile accident nine years ago. He was also partially deaf because of old age. Last week, he was strolling near his home when a thunderstorm approached. He took refuge under a tree and was struck by lightning. He was knocked to the ground and woke up some 20 minutes later, lying face down in water below a tree. He went into the house and lay down in bed. A short time later, he woke, his legs were numb and he was trembling, but, when he opened his eyes, he could see the clock across the room fading in and out in front of him. When his wife entered, he saw her for the first time in nine years. Doctors confirm that he has regained his sight and hearing apparently from the flash of lightning, but they are unable to explain the occurrence. The only possible explanation offered by one doctor was that, since Edwards lost his sight as a result of emotional shock in a terrible accident, perhaps the only way it could be restored

most states the children are required to attend school until they reach the age of sixteen.

When they become six years old, children begin elementary school. After six years in elementary, they go into junior high school and remain there for three years. The last three years of their public school education are spent in senior high school from which they graduate at the age of eighteen.

A great number of high school graduates continue their education in one of the many colleges or universities in the country. After four years, they receive a bachelor’s degree. Some continue

s tudying for a master’s degree and perhaps a doctor’s degree.

18.What is the main topic of the talk?

19.Where do public schools get their financial aid?

20.At what age do most students get their first degree?

Section B

Passage One

Although other book companies also publish that way, this company is not like the others. It allows the reader to become the leading character in the stories with the help of computers.

A child who receives such a book might say, “this book is about me,” so the company calls itself the “Me-Book s Publishing Company.”

Passage Two

He was also partially

deaf because of old age.

The only possible explanation offered by one doctor was that, since Edwards lost his sight as a result of emotional shock in a terrible accident,

perhaps the only way it could be restored by another emotional shock.

Passage Three

18.【答案】A。

Part

Passage One

Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is “Don’t!”

22.【答案】A。

Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a repertory company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery,

looking after the furniture, taking care of the costumes, and even acting in very small parts. 23.【答案】B。

【译文】根据本文,第一段最后一句话“But young actors with the stage in their blood are happy,…”

They gave her some necessary lessons and within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. Of course, she was given a more dramatic name, which is now world-famous.

25.【答案】B。

【译文】最后一行的段语“once in a blue moon” (千载难逢地) 指“once for a long time”(很长时

习语“once in a blue moon”的意思是“千载难逢地”,与“once for a long time”基本同义。 all at once 指“突然,忽然”;once in a while指“偶尔,不时地”;once and for all指“永久地,一劳永逸地”。

Passage Two

短文第二段很清楚地讲到了这一点:...and joblessness, plus cuts in public assistance, has helped drive up the number of poor children in such families by about 20 percent in just three years.

短文第四段明了地谈到了这一点:... since single women and their

offspring receive 40 to 80 percent of the benefits in various welfare programs that cost the

government a total of 40 billion dollars a year.

One tenth of white children and more than half of black children are now born out of wedlock.

Her first step along that path is attending Rarnona high school,...

Passage Three

31.【答案】A。

In managing information resources, the medium may be the key to an effective system.(媒介在管理信息资源方面是有效系统的关键。)The medium for information may be selected to satisfy a need that exists when information is created and communicated.(可以挑选信息媒介来满足创造、交流信时业已存在的需要。) Media Selection in Managing

Information Resources(挑选媒体来管理信息资源)。

The medium is a vehicle, a tool, or a container for holding information; the information itself is the thing of value.

For effective management of information

resources, media conversion may be necessary.

The medium for information may be selected to satisfy a need that exists when information is created and communicated.

Passage Four

The decline of traditional religion in the west has not removed the need for men and women to find a deeper meaning behind existence. There is a growing feeling that science, especially what is known as the new physics, and provide answers where religion remains vague and faltering.

Much to the bewilderment of professional scientists, quasi-religious cults are being formed around such unlikely topics as quantum physics, space-time relativity, black holes and the big bang.

【详细解答】只有通过短语所在的上下文来理解:...and the quantum theory, which reveals the shadowy and unsubstantial nature of atoms, have demolished the classical image of a clockwork universe slavishly unfolding along a predetermined pathway.

39.【答案】A。

To study the new physics is to embark on a journey of wonderment and paradox, to glimpse the universe in a novel perspective, in which subject and object, mind and matter, force and field, become intertwined.

Even the creation of the universe itself has fallen within the province of scientific enquiry.

Many of us who work in fundamental physics are deeply impressed by the harmony and order which pervades the physical world.

A diet can easily be adequate for normal bodily functioning, yet may not be a balanced diet. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are a rapid source of energy, they are the body's fuel. The bulk of a balanced diet should be made from carbohydrates. If eaten in an excess of the dietary requirements carbohydrates are easily stored as fats in the cells, although carbohydrate is the first source of energy in the body. An average adult requires about 12,000kJ of energy a day, most of this is supplied by the respiration of carbohydrates in the cells. Carbohydrates are used principally as a respiratory substrates, i.e. to be oxidized to release energy for active transport, macromolecule synthesis, cell division and muscle contraction. Carbohydrates are digested in the duodenum and ileum and absorbed as glucose into cells. Sources of carbohydrates such as starch are rice, potatoes, wheat and other cereals. Sugars are also carbohydrates, sources of sugars are refined sugar - sucrose, which is a food sweetener and preservative and fruit sugars - fructose. If the diet lacks carbohydrate stores of fat are mobilized and used as an energy source. Proteins Protein is not a direct source of energy in the body, it is used primarily for growth and repair of body tissues while remaining an energy source as a last resort. Proteins fulfill a wide variety of roles in the body. They are broken down in the stomach and intestines to amino acids which are then absorbed. The body can only form 8 amino acids to build proteins from, the diet must provide Essential Amino Acids (EAAs) which are synthesized into proteins which can be structural, i.e. collagen in bone, keratin in hair, myosin and actin in muscle; metabolic enzymes, hemoglobin, protective antibodies and communicative hormones.

Views on the topic vary greatly among people from different walks of life. Some believe that it is a better choice to study in domestic colleges, but others consider it better to study abroad.
