A

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle.

As Christmas drew nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade—or so we thought, as she didn’t mention it again. We bought the latest fashionable Baby Sitter’s Club dolls, a holiday dress

and some beautiful story books. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she proudly announced that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else.”

It was just too late, what with all the details of preparing Christmas dinner and buying last-minute gifts. We could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of ou r child. “What if I make a little bicycle out of clay and write a note that she could trade the clay model in for a real bike?” Her dad asked. The theory, of course, being that since that is a high-ticket item and she is “such a big girl”, it would be much better for her to pick it out. So he spent the next five hours painstakingly working with clay to make a tiny bike.

Three hours later, on Christmas morning, we were excited for Rose to open the little heart-shaped package with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud.

She looked at me and then at her dad and said, “so does this mean that I trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?”

Beaming, I said, “Yes.”

Rose had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I could never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made me. I’d rather keep this than get a real bike.”

At that moment, we would have moved heaven and earth to buy her every bicycle on the planet!

21. Rose’s parents didn’t buy her the bike she wanted in two months because ______.

A. they had bought many other wonderful things for her

B. they thought she had changed her mind

C. they didn’t have time to do any shopping

D. they decided to make one for her

22. Why did Dad make the clay bicycle?

A. He thought Rose was too young for a real bike.

B. He didn’t want to disappoint his daughter.

C. He thought his daughter would like it.

D. He wanted to give his daughter a surprise.

23. From the story, we know that ______.

A. Rose’s father was an artist with special skills

B. Rose would trade in the clay bike for a real one

C. The parents were moved and proud of the girl

D. Rose was a thoughtful and independent girl

B

We give toys to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have them. Load bags with canned foods for the hungry. Make donations to those who need it. This time of year, it seems, we focus more on doing good and being good. Certainly, that’s not a bad thing.

But, is all that kindness selfish? Researchers at the University of California, Beckley say that kindness, and related qualities like sympathy and compassion are actually a form of self preservation. Those who give more, get more. The most generous among us have greater influence and are more popular. Whereas, the unkind and unhelpful are more likely to be cast adrift from us. After all, it stands to reason, that if I’m paddling your lifeboat, you’ll keep me afloat a little longer.

So, is kindness motivated by our real concern for others or are we do-gooders because it makes us look good and shores up our position in the ecosystem? Probably both. Most of us really enjoy helping others. It makes us feel good, connected, happy and that makes for a healthier more satisfying life. But, it doesn’t hurt that we also receive other rewards—status, cooperation, influence—that will help us survive and become successful.

Despite all the benefits, I tend most often toward kindness only when it’s convenient. That doesn’t mean I have ba d manners. I say my pleases and thank-yous. I hold the door open for passengers. But, I could be kinder, more often. Sometimes I’m stopped from doing good by just how to do it. Sometimes, I’m just not thinking enough about others to recognize the need. Sometimes, I’m plain, old selfish.

I’m working to be mo re aware of those around me. To slow down and move with patience and purpose on the freeway. To be more kind. My acts of kindness aren’t complex or flashy—I’m not the type. They aren’t expensive—I’m too cheap. But those things aren’t required. You don’t have to feel guilty that your kind gesture wasn’t as big as say, Oprah building a school in Africa. Kindness can be a small, simple act and still make an extremely large impact. Notice a need and then consciously offer a bit of yourself.

24. What do researchers at the University of California, Berkeley say about kindness?

A. It is a behavior for self-protection and survival.

B. It reflects the generosity of human nature.

C. It is worthwhile to advocate doing good or being good

D. It doesn’t count in building a good relationship.

25. From the author’s point of view, ___________ .

A. acts of kindness can be something simple and practical

B. acts of kindness should be something impressive

C. kindness starts from some grand and heroic actions

D. kindness is more a matter of awareness in cooperation

26. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A. Kindness: a Quality of Sympathy

B. Kindness: a Concern for Others

C. Kindness: a Win-win Quality

D Kindness: an Approach to Success

C

Travel has connected the world in ways previous generations could have never imagined. Different cultures and languages are constantly interacting. Even better, it’s made us more aware of the unique challenges among various communities. This heightened awareness is directly behind the growing trend of “voluntourism”—travelers offering up their holiday to volunteer for different causes and among communities in foreign destinations.

But every destination is unique in the challenges its communi ty is facing. That’s why Bowen suggests that travelers make themselves aware of those issues before travel, which is something he’s already seen happening. Bowen recently organized community voluntourism opportunities for guests at the Grace Bay in Turks

“There’s a new sense of community awareness, even when you’re going to a foreign country,”he says. “Unfortunately a big part of our economy in Turks is import. We import 99.9 percent of everything, so travelers know it's hard to get things here, so they wa nt to give back.”From there, Bowen’s team makes sure to place travelers in programs they’re enthusiastic about. Sports lovers get placed in the sports center and tech travelers might get sent to the computer school. The program has been so successful that Bowen continually sees guests returning for another voluntourism trip in Turks.

Limited vacation time in the US makes it difficult to stick to month-long or even week-long programs, yet American travelers still feel the urge to give back. It’s something Rodgers at Give A Day Global used to think about. “I really want to make a positive difference and I don’t know how to do that when I travel if I don’t have a lot of time t o give. That’s where the idea of Give A Day Global came from.

To find your inspiration for voluntourism and giving back, Rodgers suggests seizing a book. “Reading books about people who have faced great challenges and made incredible progress is a great way to stay inspired and engaged,”she says. For her, it’s about reminding ourselves th at there are people devoted to making positive changes in the life of other people.

27. What does the author say has caused the growth of voluntourism?

A. Peoples awareness of unique challenges for different communities.

B. The need to prevent different cultures and languages from mixing.

C. People’s urge to travel and see different cultures in foreign countries.

D. The dependence of the world on imported goods for development.

28. What do Bowen and his team manage to do?

A. Set up a community voluntourism organization

B. Help solve the economy problems in Turks

C. Get his customers to join in voluntourism.

D. Write about volunteer work while traveling.

29. How does Rodgers suggest we get inspiration to do voluntourism?

A. By taking limited vacation time to work in our local community.

B. By listening to lectures about ways to give back to undeveloped areas.

C. By signing up individually to get engaged in helping poor countries.

D. By reading books about people devoted to positively changing others.

30. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Making some money when traveling abroad

B. Doing volunteer work when traveling abroad.

C. The benefit of doing volunteer school work.

D. Tips about inspiration to do voluntary work.

If you are looking to improve your relationship with your parents, you are not alone. 31 There are a number of steps that can be taken to make a better relationship with your parents.

Be grateful. Consider all that your parents have done for you. You may find yourself feeling thankful to your parents. You will be more willing to improve the relationship. Let your parents know that you are appreciative for all they have done for you. 32 For example, get them a nice gift you live with your parents, do some extra housework without being asked.

33 Often, people do not get along because they fail to take others’perspective. Accept that your parents are different. Think about the ways that their lives may have been different from your life, and how these different histories may be contributing to issues in the relationship.

Avoid unnecessary arguments. Sometimes arguments are unavoidable, but do your best to avoid unnecessary quarrels. This may mean that you have to bite your tongue when one of your parents says something controversial. 34 If it is, make the point clearly and modestly in order to avoid an overly emotional argument.

Don’t ask for their advice unless you really want it. Sometimes problems arise in relationships between parents and children, particularly at the teenage years and beyond, because parents can try to give advice that might hurt your sense of independence. 35 Otherwise, you may be opening the door to frustration on your part.

A. Put yourself in their shoes.

B. Be happy with them for this.

C. Show your appreciation with your actions

D. It can hurt to feel taken for granted, even for parents.

E. Problems between parents and children are common.

F. So try only asking for their advice when you really want it.

G. Determine whether the need to respond is really necessary.

Life pressure can be big enough, so we need to be surrounded by warm phrases, or even some blind 56 (confident). Recently, a new trend--seeking praise from stranger—has gone p opular on social media among China’s young people; many chat groups 57 (form) to show kindness and support to members. These

“in-need-of-praise” chat groups are 58 reflection of Chinese culture where

59 (open) seeking and giving praise is uncommon, 60 (lead) many people to hide their true emotions even from their families.

For young people, gaining recognition from peers is more important than getting approval from older generations. They can feel a sense of belonging and gain encouragement, 61 is beneficial to their mental health.

As long as people’s praise doesn’t sound 62 (sincere), we are likely to welcome it. Being richly recognized for what we do or who we are just feels good. Most of us like praises, 63 they can raise our spirits, warm our hearts and decrease fears and self-doubt.

However, anyone giving or receiving praise in such groups should be 64 (caution). Such praises come at a cost. And the biggest risk is the constant emphasis on the “false self”, wh ich makes 65 harder to see the “true self”.

1. 介绍自己;

2. 表示欢迎;

Most people around the world are right-handed. This fact also seems to have held true throughout history. In 1977 scientists studied works of art made at various times in history. Most of the people shown in these works of art are right handed, so scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common. But what do Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein have in common? They were all left-handed along with other famous people including Brad Pitt Prince William, and Barack Obama. In fact, an estimated 13 percent of the world's population may be

left-handed.

Many researchers claim to have found relationships between left-handedness and

various physical and mental characteristics, such as blond hair, blue eyes, and sleep difficulties. Other studies have found a higher-than-normal level of left-handed people in certain occupations(职业), including professional baseball players, architects, as well as prisoners. However, some of these connections are very weak, and others have not been proven.

What makes a person become right-handed rather than left-handed? One simple idea suggests that people normally get right-handedness from their parents. Studies have found that two right-handed parents have only a 9. 5-percent chance of having a left-handed child, while two left-handed parents have a 26-percent chance of having a left-handed child. Another common theory is that left-handed people suffer mild brain damage during birth, which makes them left-handed.

Whatever the reasons behind it, people's attitudes toward left-handedness have changed a lot over the years. Statistics show that although 13 percent of young people are left-handed, only six percent of the elderly are left-handed. Left-handed children used to be punished until they began using their right hand like other children, but today people who are left-handed are no longer looked down on nor are they considered abnormal For most people today, either case is perfectly acceptable. There are even a number of shops now selling products for left-handed people, such as

left-handed can openers, guitars, and even a left-handed camera.

A In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719— but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy(识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad. In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters — from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim— were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s partly t hat his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible —and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one. 21. Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century
