The culture of dragon

Dragon culture exists in both the Eastern world and the Western world. Dragons are deeply tooted in Chinese culture, so the Chinese often consider themselves "the descendants of the dragon". In the Western world ,dragons can be found in many works of literature and they look quite different from the Chinese dragons.

In Chinese culture, dragon are generous and wise. They are closely connected with the ancient royal family. The beds the emperors slept on were called the dragon beds; the seats they sat on were called the dragon seats; the dresses they wore were called the dragon robes. Gradually, the dragon became a symbol of power and good fortune. According to the popular belief, if you are born in the year of dragon, you will be an intelligent and brave leader.

But in the West, dragons have a different reputation. The Western dragons are evil animals from hell. They usually have wings and can send out fire from their mouths. The earliest surviving epic work of northern European literature, Beowulf, tells a story of a hero, Beowulf, who fights and kills a dangerous dragon but he himself is killed in the fight.

Why does the dragon have different reputations in different parts of the world? Some experts believe it is due to the animals which myths grew out of. In China, the idea of the dragon might come from the alligator—a shy animal that is only seen when there is plenty of water, which is a good sign for agriculture. But in the West, the idea of the dragon might come from hate the snake—an animal which people hate and are afraid of.

While small may be beautiful, tall is just plain uncomfortable it seems, particularly when it comes to staying in hotels and eating in restaurants. The Tall Persons Club Great Britain(TPCGB),which was formed six months ago to campaign for the needs of the tall, has turned its attention to hotels and restaurants.Beds that are too small, shower heads that are too low ,and restaurant tables with hardly any leg.room all make life difficult for those of above average height ,it says.

But it is not j us t the extra-tall whose needs are not being met.The average height of the population has been increasing yet the standard size of beds, doorways, and chairs has remained unchanged.

‘'The bedding industry says a bed should be six inches larger than the person using it, SO even a king—size bed at 6.6”(6 feet and 6 inches)is falling short for 25%of men, while the standard 6'3nbed caters for(满足需要)less than half of the male population,"said TPCGB president Phil Heinricy, “Seven-foot beds would work f me."

Similarly, restaurant tables can cause no end of problems.Small tables, which mean the long-1egged have to sit a foot or so away from them, are enough to make tall customers go elsewhere.

43.What is the purpose of the TPCGB campaign?

D.They have to provide enough space for the long-legged.

It’s not easy being a teenager—nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.

Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving; consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clarn up. Instead , let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him should he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’s privacy. Never read him his mail or listen in on personal conversions.

Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation (节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part –time job

47. The main purpose of the text is to tell parents .

A. how to get along with a teenager

B. how to respect a teenager

C. how to understand a teenager

D. how to help a teenager grow up 48. What does the phrase “clam up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. become excited B. show respect C. refuse to talk D. seek help 49.The last paragraph is about how to teach a teenager A. to use the phone in a sensible way B. to pay for his own telephone C. to share the phone quickly D. to answer the phone quickly

50. What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text? A. Nor allow him to learn driving or take drugs B. Give him advice only when necessary
