A film crew was at the Circle Five Ranch to film a Marlboro commercial. This was in 1868, before they prohibited cigarette ads from American television. Darrell Winfield was watching the crew set up the equipment. The scene included an actor crossing a river on horseback, but when the time came to shoot, the man was too drunk to ride. Someone from the crew saw Winfield and asked him if he would ride the horse for 50 dollars. "Hell," said Winfield, "for 50 bucks, I'll jump that damn horse over the moon!"To people in many countries, Winfield is just a familiar but nameless face, a simple cowboy with an advertising message about a connection between the West and a brand of cigarettes. Few people know that he is 55, a family man who's been married to the same woman for 37 years and has 5 children and 7 grandchildren. Most surprisingly, he's a real, working cowboy who raises horses in his ranch in Wyoming. One of the most striking things about the Marlboro Man is that success hasn't changed him much. He says that complete strangers sometimes come up to him and say, "I've met you, know you from somewhere. "Whenever it happens, he says that he gets embarrassed.(1)、Marlboro commercials were allowed on television in America before 1868.A:TB:F答案:A(2)、The word "prohibited" in the first paragraph mean "forbidden".A:TB:F答案:A(3)、When they filmed the ad, Winfield was too drunk.A:TB:F答案:B(4)、From the passage, we know that Winfield was a rich man.A:TB:F(5)、When people recognized Winfield, he felt uncomfortable.A:TB:F答案:ALast Friday a storm tore through two villages in the New Territories destroying fourteen homes. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or torn roofs. One person was killed, several were badly injured and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received smaller injuries. Altogether over two hundred people were homeless as a result of the storm.A farmer, Mr. C. Y. Tan, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour."I was in the kitchen with my wife and children," he said, "when we heard a loud noise. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us, we managed to climb out but then I saw that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him, safe but very frightened."Mrs. Woo Mei Fong said that her husband had just left for work when she noticed that her house was shaking. She rushed outside immediately with her children."There was no time to take anything," she said. "A few minutes later, the roof came down."Soldiers helped to bring people out of the flooded area and the Welfare Department provided food, clothes and shelter.(1)、Some of the people were taken to hospital because they had been badly injured.A:TB:F答案:A(2)、When the storm first began, Mr. Tan was inside his house.A:TB:F(3)、When Mr. Tan's house fell down, only one of his children was inside it.A:TB:F答案:A(4)、Mrs. Woo and her family escaped injury because her husband had gone to work.A:TB:F答案:B(5)、The best title for the passage would be "A Terrible Storm."A:TB:F答案:AIn 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the filmmaker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney's cartoon(动画片)film for children. When Walt Disney heard Nash's voice, he said,"Stop! That's our duck!"The duck was the now-famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat and wore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audience liked him because he was lazy and greedy, and because he lost his temper very quickly. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey's eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn't a goody-goody like Mickey. In the 1930s, 40s and 50s Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational films about the place of the USA in the world and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared---there were no more new cartoons.Clarence Nash died in February, 1985. But today's children can still see the old cartoons on television and hear that famous voice.(1)、Walt Disney made Donald Duck film.A:TB:F答案:A(2)、The first Donald Duck film was made in 1934.A:TB:F答案:A(3)、Clarence Nash was a film-maker.A:TB:F答案:B(4)、The underlined word "audience" in the second paragraph means readers.A:TB:F答案:B(5)、The underlined word "goody-goody" in the second paragraph means a person who likes to appear to be faultless in behavior.A:TB:F答案:A全套完整题库,全中文翻译内容,复习更方便,考前独家提供简化版本,助您快速通过,全程免费答疑。
Unit 6Translation:The patient in Room 542 was unusual. He had the look of vigor and good health, but he was blind, legless, and his deteriorating body was like a rotting log. His life was like a candle in the wind, about to be blown out at any moment. His body was not whole, but he was still impressive. He had been suffering physical pain beyond imagination, but he was always quiet. He always ordered scrambled eggs for breakfast but he never ate them. Instead, he would throw the breakfast plate against the wall earnestly as if it were a discus. He had no feet but he repeatedly asked the doctor to bring his a pair of shoes. The room he dwelled in was empty of all possessions——no get-well cards, flowers, slippers, none of the usual kickshaws of sickroom. He seemed to have been cast upon a wild island. Finally, he left the world quietly, with no one beside him. Lying in his bed, his face was relaxed, grave and dignified. Upon his death, was he remembering a time when he was whole? Did he dream of the feet he used to have?Unit 5TranslationWhen he was little, his father would bend down form his great height to sweep him into the air. But he was never afraid, not with his father’s hands holding him. To him, no one in the world was strong, or as wise, as his father. As he grew, he would lurk behind the kitchen door when it was time for his father to come home at night. He would leap out when his father asked about him. After he went to school, they would wrestle on the floor together. Every time, his father would master him with ease, leaving him half resentful and half mirthful. In high school he was surprised to find that there was so much more of him, and he could look down on his mother. But when it came to wrestling, he was still no equal of his father. One night, he suddenly found that his father didn’t look nearly as tall as he used to. He could even look his father straight in the eyes now. He challenged his father once more and this time, it was his father who said, ‘I give.’ His mother helped his father to rise, and there was baffled pain in her eyes. His father spoke of a next time, and his mother did not contradict, because the three of themknew that there would never be a next time.He ran through the kitchen door, stood on the steps and let tears burn his eyes and run down his cheeks.Unit 4Life is full of miracles. Sometimes, a chance meeting can lead to a happy marriage. When he was twenty, he was college poor. One day, he went to buy some beer and on his way back he saw his neighbor, a Japanese woman, cracking walnuts on her front porch. He walked slowly and she looked up, smiling. He smiled back and said hello, and returned with the beer to his apartment, his heart still with the girl.So raced his heart downstairs, but stopped short of her house, because he didn’t know what to say. After a while, with studied casualness he walked past the girl who was cleaning up the shells, but he only came up with a hearty hello and walked away. He was troubled by his own indecision. Then, he returned, walking past her again. They smiled to each other, but again nothing was said before he returned to his apartment.Later, they began to talk, sit together on the porch, and snack on the sweet bread he baked personally. Then they held hands. Eventually, he married the woman he found cracking walnuts on an afternoon.Had he not gone for the beer, or had he met someone else instead of her, his life would have been totally different.Unit 3TRANSLATIONWhen Hughes was going on thirteen, his aunt took him to the church for a revival meeting, hoping that his soul would be saved by Jesus Christ. His aunt told him that when he was saved,he would see a light, and something would happen to him inside! She also said he would see and hear and feel Jesus in his soul. Young Hughes believed in the literal meaning ofthese words. He sat there calmly in the hot, crowded church, waiting for Jesus to come to him. After the sermon by the preacher, all the children went to the altar one after another. This meant that they were saved. But Hughes kept sitting there. He was still waiting for Jesus to come, wanting something to happen to him. Now the whole congregation was praying for him alone. The pressure on him was increasing and he began to feel ashamed of himself, holding everything up so long. In order to avoid further trouble,Hughes decided to lie and say that Jesus had come. So he got up and was saved finally. That night, lying in bed,Hughes cried in agony. He felt guilty because he had lied in public and he didn’t believe in Jesus any more.Unit 2What is poverty? Read the story of a single mother of three, and you’ll understand what it means. She was married once, but later her husband lost his job and life became increasingly difficult. After giving birth to the last baby, her marriage came to an end. In order to save her children from suffering, she summoned up her courage and went to ask for help. She got seventy-eight dollars a month for the four of them. After the rent, most of the rent went for food. There was no money left to get the refrigerator fixed and the milk went sour; no money for hot water, and even in winter she had to do washing in icy cold water. She had chronic anemia caused from poor diet, a bad case of worms, and needed a corrective operation, but there was no money for iron pills, or better food, or worm medicine, to say nothing of having an operation. She had no money for grannies; no money for paper handkerchiefs and her children were seen with runny nose all the time. She tried her best to use only the minimum electricity. She stayed up all night on cold nights, because she had to watch the fire, for fear that one spark on the newspaper covering the walls would cause a fire and the sleeping children would die in flames. She saw no bright future. Sooner or later, the boys would end up behind the bars of their prison or turn to the freedom of alcohol or drugs and find themselves enslaved. And what awaited the daughter was, at best, a life like that of the mother.Indeed, poverty is an acid that drips on pride until all pride is worn away. Poverty is a chisel that chips on honor until honor is worn away.Unit 1Translation:He died. He worked himself to death, precisely at 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning, on his day off.His friends and acquaintances were not really surprised. To them, he was a perfect type a, a workaholic, a classic.Phil worked six days a week, five of them until eight or nine at night, during a time when his own company had begun the four-day week for everyone but the executives. He played a golf game every month but it was work. Other than this, he had no outside” extracurricular interests.”His survivors included his wife Helen and three children. Helen, forty-eight years old, had given up trying to compete with his work years ago. Among his” beloved”children, the eldest son didn’t know him well, and the daughter had no shared topics with him. Only the youngest son who was twenty, tried to grab at his father and tried to mean enough to him to keep the man at home.At the funeral, the sixty-year-old company president said that the fifty-one-year-old deceased had meant much to the company and would be missed and would be hard to replace. And by 5:00 p.m. the afternoon of the funeral, the company president had begun to make inquires about the replacement.。

This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy circle.During the hours when you l abor through your work you may say that you are “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. Not one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语)as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak(最高点)in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(对抗)your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you will get up steam(鼓起干劲)and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble some search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work (常规工作)in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.11.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably _________.A.he is a lazy personB.he refuses to follow his own energy cycleC.he is not sure when his energy is lowD.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A12.
