A

Fast-food chains including Burger King and Starbucks have brought in plant-based meat products in China in an effort to promote healthy eating and protect the environment. Readers share their opinions.

Linda (China)

I just don’t get it. If you want something that tastes like meat, you’d better eat meat. Plant-based meat is highly processed. It is not as healthy as vegetables. It contains unhealthy amounts of fat, salt and artificial additives. Regular exercise, along with a well-balanced diet, is the best way to

stay healthy.

Terryfoy (UK)

Our human body was not designed for us only to eat vegetables. We are designed to eat meat. The protein that our body must have to survive comes from the meat we eat. Our bodies function properly with the correct balance of meat and vegetables. Too much meat and we get fat, too little meat and we get skinny and weak. If you want to be healthy, you must eat a balanced diet of both meat and vegetables.

Taikor (Malaysia)

Start with a huge cutdown on meat. Regarding pigs, do you know they could outsmart you on Playstation games? Don’t be surprised. They’re much smarter than dogs. So they do better at video games than some primates Pigs are extremely clever animals. They're gentle, defenseless creatures. Start doing it now. It’s time we made a change.

Sockmonkey (Singapore)

I could never be a vegetarian. I eat very little meat, but I love the meat I do eat! If one has to cut down on meat, it seems that red meat is the first thing to be minimized since it’s not as good for you as other types.

21. What does Linda think of plant-based meat?

A. Unhealthy.

B. Necessary.

C. Delicious.

D. Well-balanced.

22. Who suggests that humans have less red meat?

A. Linda and Taikor.

B. Linda and Terryfoy.

C. Taikor and Sockmonkey.

D. Terryfoy and Sockmonkey.

23. What’s the main purpose of the passage?

A. To introduce the harm of eating too much meat.

B. To show us different opinions about eating meat.

C. To inform us of the advantages of a balanced diet.

D. To state the necessity of protecting the environment.

B

There are many differences between British English and American English. I used to teach a course about the differences between the two. We speak English on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean but we have many differences in our common language. We have examples of the same words having very different meanings, different spellings of the same words as well as completely different words for the same things. Here are some examples.

A cookie in the US is called a biscuit in the UK. A biscuit in the US is a small cake in the UK. Crisps in the UK,are known as chips, but we British people eat a plate of chips that you call fries in the US. In the UK,a pie can be made from either meat or fruit, while in the US pies are normally made from fruit;pot pies are made from meat. Most things are measured in grams and kilograms in the US,not pounds and ounces.

One very obvious difference is the side of the road we each choose to drive on. Petrol in the UK is

gas in the US. The place where we fill up our cars,in the UK,is a garage; while in the US,it’s a gas station. The term garage is also used as a place to store your car next to or close by your house. In the UK we call a lorry what is known as a truck in the US.

An elevator in the US is called a lift here, and the first floor in the US,is called the ground floor here,so many visitors get off on the wrong floor in British hotels.

I could continue with this. There are countless examples of differences within our one shared language. With so many differences, no wonder it’s hard to understand each other well.

24. The passage is mainly about the differences between British English and American English

in .

A. vocabulary

B. grammar

C. sound

D. spelling

25. It’s implied in the passage that the author may be .

A. a driver from the US

B. a cook from the US

C. a teacher from the UK

D. a gas station worker from the UK

26. In the author’s opinion,.

A. language differences don’t affect understanding

B. the same words in the two different types of English may have different spellings

C. there will be fewer differences between American and British English in the future

D. it is impossible that some Americans get off on the wrong floor in British hotels

27. What can we learn from the passage?

A. “Elevator” is commonly used in the UK.

B. Pies mean the same thing in the UK and the US.

C. In the UK,things are measured in pounds and ounces.

D. British and American people drive on the same side of the road.

C

“Runners, on your mark. Get set...” Bang! And I was off, along with other teenage runners from high schools across the county. It was a fine day, like any other fair-weather autumn day in Maryland. But the race that day felt unique (特别的) from the get-go. For one thing, I liked the course. It was my team's home course, one I was used to running during practices. It took runners along terrain (地形) that included open fields, hills and even dirt paths through a small forest. It was a beautiful 5-kilometer course. This particular race was our team’s invite, and I was proud to be sharing the course with competitors from other schools. It also meant a lot more than normal — that my parents were there to cheer me on.

With so much to expect that day, I was ready to run! And I didn't want to be stuck with other runners, as is typical at the beginning of most cross-country races. So when the gun sounded, I took off running, leaving everyone else in the dust.

The first part of our course followed a large open field before disappearing into the forest. Within seconds of the start, I was far ahead of everyone, and all of the fans could see it. It felt

magnificent!

But that feeling didn't last long. Little did I know my coach was laughing to himself thinking, “Gabe is done for!” And I was. My body was telling me to slow down. My pride, however, said “No! Not until you’re out of sight of the audiences!” I was in pain, but I kept up my pace until I reached the forest. Once I was among the trees, I slowed way down.

I enjoyed most races, even while pushing myself, but this one was not enjoyable in the least. I finished the race, but in nowhere near the time I could have if I’d paced myself well from the beginning. Every time I reflect on that cross-country season, I’m reminded of something: Pride is no substitute for pace.

28. What made the race unique to the author according to paragraph 1?

A. The blue sky and white clouds.

B.The home course and his parents.

C. The competitors and audiences.

D. The unknown terrain and fair weather.

29. What docs the underlined sentence “Gabe is done for” in paragraph 4 refer to?

A. The author loses something.

B. The author needs more patience.

C. The author is doing a great job.

D. The author is going to fail the race.

30. Why didn’t the author enjoy the race?

A. Because he slowed way down.

B. Because he didn't finish the race.

C. Because he could have done better.

D. Because he lost the game completely.

31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. The Meaning of Pride

B. The Race Less Paced

C. A Race Worth Celebrating

D. A Competition of My Team

D

Heat stress from extreme heat and humidity (湿度) will annually affect areas that are now home to 1.2 billion people by 2100, assuming current greenhouse gas emissions (排放), according to a Rutgers study.

Most climate studies on projected heat stress have focused too much on extreme heat but did not consider the role of humidity, which is another key driver. “When we look at the risks of a warmer planet, we need to pay particular attention to the combined effects of extreme heat and humidity, which are especially dangerous to human health.” said Robert E. Kopp, director of the Rutgers Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences.

Rising global temperatures are increasing exposure to heat stress, which harms human health. Heat stress is caused by the body’s inability to cool down properly through sweating. Body temperature can rise rapidly, and high temperatures may damage the brain and other vital organs. What’s more, heat stress can result in heatstroke (中暑), which is the most serious heat-related illness, can kill or cause permanent disability without emergency treatment.

Annual exposure to extreme heat and humidity above safety guidelines will be projected to affect

areas that are currently home to about 500 million people, if the planet warms by 1.5℃and nearly 800 million at 2℃. The planet has already warmed by about 1.2℃above late 19th century levels. An estimated 1.2 billion people would be affected with 3℃of warming, as expected by the end of this century under current global policies. That’s nearly four times the number of people affected today, and nearly 12 times the number who were affected in no industrial age.

32. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?

A. Many areas will be flooded by the end of 2100.

B. Exposure to polluted air may cause cancer.

C. Less attention has been paid to the effect of humidity.

D. Heat stress makes it harder to forecast the weather.

33. What’s the harm of high body temperature?

A. Sweating a lot.

B. Damaging organs.

C. Causing heart-attack.

D. Leading to high blood pressure.

34. How many people are affected by heat stress nowadays?

A. About 800 million.

B. About 500 million.

C. About 1.2 billion.

D. About 300 million.

35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A. How to prevent heat stress

B. Heat stress may affect more people

C. The combination of heat and humidity

D. The earth may get warmer and warmer

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m a student from Chengdu, China. I am writing to you to tell you something about Yangtze

Finless Porpoise. Due to the lack of human protection, the number of Yangtze Finless Porpoise is becoming smaller and smaller, only less than 1000 left. Most of them are dying out. Therefore, it’s high time we took immediate measures to change the situation.

So I hope WWF will do something to help Yangtze Finless Porpoise by setting up a special fund organization or drawing up some rules on how to protect it and so on.

I am looking forward to your reply. Thank you!

A Hungry For a Win A victor is,by definition, someone who wins a struggle or contest. However, that doesn’t mean he or she will live a proud and happy life ever after,as Katniss Everdeen is about to discover in The Hunger Games:Catching Fire. Catching Fire, out in Chinese theaters on Nov.21,is set in a futuristic society called Panem. Every year its government holds a televised fight to the death. Two teenagers from each of the12 districts of Panem are chosen to compete. In the new film, last year’s victors Katniss(Jennifer Lawrence)and her partner Peeta are back home after winning the74th Hunger Games.Katniss just wants to live a normal life. However, that never seems to happen. She has nightmares, which remind her that she is a killer. Her worst nightmare comes true when the annual Hunger Games arrive again. The teenager finds herself back in the competition along with Peeta.Since Katniss brings hope to Panem through her courage,President Snow plans to use this year’s Games to kill off Katniss and Peeta and in turn dampen the fire of rebellion. “This is the next step of Katniss’heroism and the next part of her journey to finding out who she is really going to be,”Lawrence told Reuters. Fast-paced and full of action,Catching Fire looks to outdo the success that the first film had in2012.With a97percent rating on the movie review website Rotten Tomatoes,it is enjoying positive reviews.Critics have praised it for being faithful to the book written by American author Suzanne Collins. The Hollywood Reporter said that Catching Fire outshines the first movie a lot. Jennifer Lawrence, who won a best actress Oscar this year for her2012movie Silver Linings Playbook, has helped Catching Fire find success,Forbes pointed out.The23-year-old actress does well in playing a young lady who hates what she was forced to do to stay alive yet is determined not to give up. “Lawrence’s down-to-earth personality in real life won the hearts of the public. So given a wildly popular first film that blew everyone away,a rising fan base and a lead performer beloved by the mainstream press and viewers, the sequel(续集)was always going to be big,”Forbes noted. 1.The underlined word“dampen”in Paragraph4is closest in meaning to“________”.A.hold B.light C.reduce D.support 2.Which of the following is TRUE about the film’s story according to the article?
