Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

Aboriginal is a term used to describe the people and animals that lived in the place from the earliest _21_(know) times or before Europeans arrived. Examples are the Maori in New Zealand, the aborigines in Australia and the Indians in America. They all share the fact _22_ they were pushed off their land by European settlers.

Maori

The Maori were the first people _23_ (go) to New Zealand about 1,000 years ago. They came from the islands of Polynesia in the Pacific. They brought dogs, rats and plants with them and settled mainly on the northern Island. In 1769, Captain James Cook from Britain took possession of the island and from that time British people started to settle. The Maori signed an agreement on land rights with these settlers, _24_ in later years, there were arguments and battles between them. Aborigines

The native people of Australia came from somewhere in Asia more than 40,000 years ago. They lived by hunting and gathering. Their contact with British settlers began in 1788. By the 1940s, almost all of _25_ were mixed into Australian society as low-paid workers. Their rights were limited. In 1976 and 1993 the Australian government passed laws _26_ returned some land to the Aborigines and recognized their property rights.

American Indians.

Long before the Europeans came to America in the 16th and 17th century, the American Indians, or Native Americans, lived there. It is believed that they came from Asia. Christopher Columbus mistook the land _27_ India and so-called people there Indians. The white settlers in American Indians lived in peace at the beginning, but conflicts finally _28_ (arise) and led to the Indian war(1866-1890). After the wars, the Indians _29_ (drive) to the west of the country. Not until 1924 _30_ they gain the right to vote.

Health care reform is largely about everyday concerns …making sure more people are insured and have _31_ access to primary care to treat acute illnesses like the flu in proper settings, instead of emergency rooms and helping to keep chronic illnesses such as diabetes in _32_. What it doesn't clearly tackle is how the medical industry’s _33_ to unexpected public health crises and epidemics would differ. There’s little in either the House or Senate bills that would result in more _34_ surveillance of outbreaks, for instance, and there’s nothing in either bill that can prevent the criminal activity that led to two of the most alarming health stories of the past few decades.

So it's worth wondering if the current bills could have changed how some of the other big public health crises of the past few decades would have played out: does having a more _35_ health care plan in place make a nation less prone to various epidemics and illnesses? We asked several experts to“run back the clock’’(as one of them put it) and _36_ whether reform would have made any difference or saved any lives. Most of them agreed that although it wouldn't have _37_ any crises, they may have been easier to bear. Here's a look at health crises and how they may have developed under an extensive health-care-reform plan.

Under both bills, health insurance companies will be prevented from _38_ against people with pre-existing conditions or canceling people's insurance because of anything other than _39_ fraud. Both of those provisions could have made tremendous difference in how AIDS was _40_ dealt with in the U.S V says Wendy Parmet, a professor of law at Northeastern University and a prominent lawyer who was co-counsel in the case that led the Supreme Court to apply the Americans with Disabilities Act to AIDS victims.

III. Reading Comprehension

Section A

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

How I Failed My Oxford Interview

As soon as the words left my mouth I knew I'd _41_. “You think Jane Austen is." soft?’’ The man opposite me asked in disbelief. Then, he and his colleague took turns to _42_ my claim, finishing each other's sentences as they stressed Austen's novels were, in fact, savage.

“I just mean...” I said in a _43_ voice, trying to keep the tone light, '"that she's not as biting as Virginia wolf.”

The two professors patted this idea around, too, like a couple of cats toying with a frightened bird…giving _44_ examples of how Austen's work was, _45_, more biting than Woolf’s. With no

more defensive action to take simply smiled and said, “Let’s just agree to disagree, shall we?” And at that moment, my dreams of going to Oxford university _46_ in a puff of smoke.

Part of my problem, in hindsight was a lack of confidence. _47_ I was a straight A student and had prepared for the interview to the best of my ability, I wasn't a skilled debater. When faced with two experts who told me that I was wrong, instead of defending myself, I rolled over and accepted _48_.

To pass the interview, you need confidence, of course. You also need a _49_ passion for your subject, not just a keen interest. In other words, don't put comments on your personal statement that you don’t have _50_ for your in-person backup.

So, months later, I already knew the contents of my thin envelope when it appeared on my doormat. _51_, I felt a pang of disappointment. I had wanted to go to Oxford since I was 13.1 used to look up images of my favorite college with the same _52_ of a bride-to-be browsing wedding dresses.

Ultimately, I didn't have what it took…but, looking back, that was _53_ a bad thing. Instead of going to Oxford, I found a university that was a better fit for my interests. I loved my eclectic course, where I could write an essay comparing Vone Eyre to 50 Shades of Grey.

Failing my Oxford interview also provided a valuable life lesson. I'm now more confident in my opinions, more passionate when it comes to debate, and I try to back up my points with _54_ evidence. What's more, I had never since ended a discussion by giving a _55_ smile and saying/5 let's just agree to disagree, shall we?’’

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the

one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

(A)

If you could be anybody in the world, who would it be? Your neighbor or a superstar? A few people have experienced what it might be like to step into the skin of another person, thanks to an unusual virtual reality device. Rikke Wahl, an actress, model and artist, was one of the participants in a body swapping experiment at the Be Another lab, a project developed by a group of artists based in Barcelona. She swapped with her partner, an actor, using a machine called The Machine to Be Another and temporarily became a man. As I looked down, I saw my whole body as a man, dressed in my partner's pants, she said. “That’s the picture I remember best. ‘‘

The set-up is relatively simple. Both users were a virtual reality headset with a camera on the top. The video from each camera is set to the other person, so what you see is the exact view of your partner. If she moves her arm, you see it. If you move your arm, she sees it.

To get used to seeing another person's body without actually having control of it, participants start by raising their arms and legs very slowly, so that the others can follow along. Eventually, this kind of slow synchronized movement becomes comfortable, and participants really start to feel as if they are living in another person's body.

Using such technology promises to alter people's behavior afterwards --- potentially for the better. Studies have shown that virtual reality can be effective in fighting racism …the bias that humans have against those who don't look or sound like them. Researchers at the university of Barcelona give people a questionnaire called the Implicit Association Test, which measures the strength of people's associations between, for instance, black people and adjectives such as good, bad, athletic or awkward. Then they asked them to control the body of a dark skinned digital character using virtual reality glasses, before taking the test again. This time, the participants bias scores, were lower. The idea is that once you put yourself in another's shoes, you’re less likely to think ill of them because your brain has internalized the feeling of being that person.

The creators of the Machine to Be Another hoped to achieve a similar result. At the end of body swapping, people feel like holding each other in their arms, says Arthur Point ,a programmer with the project. “It’s a really nice way to hope this kind of experience, I would really, really recommend it to everyone.”

Unhealthy health care bills, long emergency-room waits and inability to find a primary care physician just scratch the surface of the problems that patients face daily.

Primary care should be the backbone of any health care system. Countries with appropriate primary care resources score highly when it comes to health outcomes and costs. The U.S. takes the opposite approach by emphasizing the specialists rather than the primary care physician.

A recent study analyzed the providers who treat Medicare Beneficianes(^:^M{M^SJ^) . The startling finding was that the average Medicare patient saw a total of seven doctors --- two primary care physicians and five specialists --- in a given year. Contrary to popular belief, the more physicians taking care of you don't guarantee better care. Actually increasing breakup of care results in a corresponding rise in costs and medical errors.

How did we let primary care slip so far? The key is how doctors are paid. Most physicians are paid whenever they perform a medical service. The more a physician does, regardless of quality or outcome, the better he's reimbursed (返还费用).Moreover, the amount of a physician receives leans heavily toward medical or surgical procedures. A specialist who performs a procedure in a 30-minute visit can be paid three times more than a primary care physician using that same 30 minutes to discuss a patient's disease. Combine this fact with annual government threats to indiscriminately cut reimbursements, physicians are faced with no choice but to increase quantity to boost income.

Primary care physicians who refuse to compromise quality are either driven out of business or to cash-only practices, further contributing to the decline of primary care.

Medical students are not blind to this scenario. They see how heavily the reimbursement deck is stacked against primary care. The recent numbers show that since 1997, newly graduated U.S.

medical students who choose primary care as a career have declined by 50%. This trend results in emergency rooms being overwhelmed with patients without regular doctors.

How do we fix this problem?

It starts with reforming the physician reimbursement system. Remove the pressure for primary care physicians to squeeze in more patients per hour, and reward them for optimally managing their diseases and practicing evidence-based medicine. Make primary care more attractive food to medical students by forgiving students loans for those who choose primary care as a career and harmonizing the marked difference between specialist and primary care physician salaries.

We are at the point where primary care is needed more than ever. Within a few years, the first wave of 76 million Baby Boomers will become qualified for Medicare. Patients older than 85, who need chronic care most, will rise by 50% this decade.

Who will be there to treat them ?

63.The author’s chief concern about the current U.S. health care system is____ .

A.the inadequate training of physicians

B. the declining number of doctors

B.the ever-rising health care costs D. the shrinking primary care resources

64.We learn from the passage that people tend to believe that ____ .

A.the more costly the medicine, the more effective the cure

B.seeing more doctors may result in more diagnostic errors

C.visiting doctors on a regular basis ensures good health

D.the more doctors taking care of a patient, the better

65.Why do many new medical graduates refuse to choose primary care as their career?

A.They find the need for primary care declining.

B.The current system works against primary care.

C.Primary care physicians command less respect.

D.They think working in an emergency room tedious.

66.What suggestions does the author give in order to provide better health care?

A.Bridge the salary gap between specialists and primary care physicians.

B.Extend primary care to patients with chronic diseases.

C.Recruit more medical students by offering them loans.

D.Reduce the tuition of students who choose primary care as their major.

Section C

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

To Wear or Not to Wear

After a strict head teacher in the U.K. sent 80 students home for uniform violations, the Guardian held a discussion about whether wearing school uniforms makes a difference.

School uniform is very important. It does improve my concentration, because it reminds me that I’m at school to learn. But I’m not sure if that’s because I’m used to wearing uniform and associate my

own clothes with free time. 67 If everyone is wearing the same clothes, it’s

impossible to make fun of other people’s clothing. I don’t think this ignores a child’s need to express themselves.

— David Hershman, a student at Stafford grammar school

______ 68 ________ Students should start school with no uniform. As they progress through the

school, they start wearing it. I always think children need to be proud of their school, and uniform is important for that. So, make them earn it! If they let the school down, they shouldn5t be allowed to wear it. Look at the Marines(海军陆战队)——they can’t wait to get that jberet (贝雷帽).

—Tim Francis, a former teacher

I have had experience of teaching in both uniform and non-uniform schools. I can definitely see the benefits of students wearing uniform. Uniform can be important in creating a sense of school identity

and community. It is often a source of collective pride for students. _____ 69 _______ Teaching students

how to express themselves with confidence, rather than the length of their tie, should be the priority.

—Enayah Byramjee, an educational development director In a perfect world, school uniform would not exist. Children would express their personalities through their clothes at school, just as they do at home. School wouldn5t impress on pupils the need to wear skirts to a certain length. We don’t live in a perfect world, however. 70

My house is often filled with uniform-wearing girls. The best thing about uniform, for me as a parent, is the simplicity.—Joanna Moorhead, a mother of four

III. Summary Writing

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Brain Function

Declining mental function is often seen as a problem of old age, but certain aspects of brain function actually begin their decline in young adulthood, a new study suggests.

The study, which followed more than 2,000 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60, found that certain mental functions—including measures of abstract reasoning, mental speed and puzzle-solving—started to dull as early as age 27. Dips in memory, meanwhile, generally became apparent around age 37.

On the other hand, indicators of a person’s accumulated knowledge—like performance on tests of vocabulary and general knowledge—kept improving with age, according to the findings published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging. The results do not mean that young adults need to start worrying about their memories. Most people’s minds function at a high level even in their later years, according to researcher Timothy Salthouse.

'These patterns suggest that some types of mental flexibility decrease relatively early in adulthood, but that the amount of knowledge one has, and the effectiveness of integrating it with one's abilities, may increase throughout all of adulthood if there are no diseases, Salthouse said in a news release.

The study included healthy, educated adults who took standard tests of memory, reasoning and perception at the outset and at some point over the next seven years. The tests are designed to detect subtle changes in mental function, and involve solving puzzles, recalling words and details from stories, and identifying patterns in collections of letters and symbols. In general, Salthouse and his colleagues found, certain aspects of cognition generally started to decline in the late 20s to 30s. The findings shed light on normal age-related changes in mental function, which could aid in understanding the process of dementia (痴呆),according to the researchers.

My dear teachers and fellow students,

It5s a great honor for me, being the representative of all the Senior Three students, to deliver a brief farewell speech here.

It has been three years, three whole years, since I’ve been here, at my dearest school, learning a wide range of knowledge. The classrooms, which will soon be refreshed with brand new and native faces, have once been the place where we buried ourselves in books, where we discussed over maths problems and where we were taught by our adorable teachers.

We’ll never forget that, it’s you, the most respectable people throughout the world, who passed your profound knowledge to us, with the most contagious voice, expecting innocence to be replaced with creativity. Whatever mistakes we’ve made, you’ll never be annoyed. What you did was only point out the core of the wrong part meanwhile you patted us on our shoulders full of expectations.

Oh, my dear schoolmates, wipe away your tears! Long is the road ahead of us. Blurring as our eyes might be, we have to smile to the cerulean sky, for the competition will never become less fierce outside the school gate.

Therefore, just light up your hopes and embrace our glorious future which is shining with bright golden colors.

Thank you!

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
