阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C、D中,选出最佳选项。

Most musicians agree that the best violins were made in Cremona, Italy, about 200 years ago. They even sound better than violins made today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments like the old Italian violins. But they aren’t the same. Why are these old Italian violins so special? Many people think they have an answer.

Some people think it is the age of the violins. But there is a problem here. Not all old violins sound wonderful. Only those from Cremona are special. So age cannot be the answer.

Other people think the secret to those violins is the wood. The wood of the violin is very important. It must be from certain kinds of trees. It must not be too young or too old. Perhaps the violin makers of Cremona knew something special about wood for violins.

But the kind of wood may not be so important. It may be more important to cut the wood in a special way. Wood for a violin must be cut very carefully. It has to be the right size and shape. The smallest difference will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this is the secret of the Italians.

Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists make new violins that are exactly the same size and shape. But the new violins still do not sound as good as the old one. Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish(清漆), which covers the wood of the violin and makes it look shiny. It also helps the sound of the instrument. Since no one knows what the Italian violin makers used in their varnish, no one can make the same varnish today.

There may never be other violins like the violins of Cremona. And there are not many of the old violins left. So these old violins are becoming more and more precious.

What if it isn’t a dog-eat-dog world? What if caring for a dog or for a mom with Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆症) makes you stronger and allows you to live longer?

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley are challenging our long-held belief that humans are born to be selfish.

Darwin’s theory of evolution b y natural selection was misunderstood by his male followers, the researchers say. Rather than “every man for himself”, Darwin believed that humans are

successful as a species precisely because of our educational, selfless and sympathetic characteristics.

Why has it taken so long for Darwin’s central revelation(揭示) to be properly understood? “We’ve had too many men in social science,” Berkeley psychology professor Dacher Keltner told me in an interview. “Female scientists acknowledge that caring for people is part of human nature according to the research, which shows the human ability to care exists in our brains and nerve systems.”

In my book Passages in Caregiving , I urge women who take the whole responsibility for taking care of an elderly parent or a s ick relative to build a “Circle of Care”. Reach out to your brothers and sisters, friends, neighbors and community volunteers to help you care, because no one can perform this overwhelming role alone. You will be as shocked as I to learn how the most selfless caregivers are rewarded with longer life.

Sympathy is not a woman’s word. In fact it makes all of us stronger under stress and more highly respected by our peers. For so long we have repeated the false saying “Nice guys finish last”. But the 40 richest Americans committed to doing good by donating half their fortunes are no spring chickens. So here is my new explanation:Nice guys die last.

61. The first paragraph serves to .

A. give the background of the topic

B. blame the world for selfishness

C. bring out the topic of the passage

D. urge people to care for a dog

62. In Passages in Caregiving, women are advised to .

A. help as many people as possible

B. take good care of themselves

C. learn how to live a longer life

D. share the responsibility of caring with others

63. The underlined words “no spring chickens” in the last paragraph refer to .

A. rich people

B. poor people

C. young people

D. aged people

64. Why does the author mention the 40 richest Ameri cans’ commitment in this passage?

A. To argue against offering sympathy.

B. To use it as an example to support his opinion.

C. To show their generosity to society.

D. To call on people to learn from them.

65. Which of the following might be the BEST title of the passage?

A. Measures must be taken to improve the world

B. Darwin’s theory of evolution is out of date now

C. Selflessness could be the secret to longer life

D. Males and females have different opinions about selflessness

C

The concept of personal choice in relation to health behaviors is an important one. An estimated 90 percent of all illnesses may be preventable if individuals would make sound personal health choices based upon current medical knowledge. We all enjoy our freedom of choice and do not like to see it restricted when it is within the legal and moral boundaries of society. The structure of American society allows us to make almost all our own personal decisions that may concern our health. If we do desire, we can smoke, drink much, refuse to wear seat belts, eat whatever foods we want, and live a completely sedentary life-style without any exercise. The freedom to make such personal decisions is a fundamental aspect of our society, although the wisdom of these decisions can be questioned. Personal choices relative to health often cause a

difficulty. As one example, teenager may know the facts relative to smoking cigarettes and health but may be pressured by friends into believing it is a socially accepted thing to do.

A majority of factors, both inherited and environmental, influence the development of health-related behaviors, and it is beyond the scope of this text to discuss all these factors as they may affect any given individual. However, the decision to adopt a particular health related behavior is usually one of personal choices. There are healthy choices and there are unhealthy choices. In discussing the morals of personal choice, Fries and Crapo, drew a comparison. They suggest that to knowingly give oneself over to a behavior that has a statistical (统计的) probability of shortening life is similar to attempting suicide. Thus, for those individuals who are interested in preserving both the quality and quantity of life, personal health choices should reflect those behaviors that are associated with a statistical probability of increased vitality and longevity (长寿).

66. The concept of personal choice concerning health is important because .

A. it helps cure most illnesses

B. it helps raise the level of our medical knowledge

C. it is essential to personal freedom in American society

D. wrong decisions could lead to poor health

67."Live a completely sedentary life-style" in Paragraph 1 means “”.

A. live an inactive life

B. live an interesting life

C. live a life with complete freedom

D. live a life of vice (恶习)

68. Sound personal health choice is often difficult to make because .

A. current medical knowledge is not enough yet

B. there are many factors influencing our decisions

C. few people are willing to trade the quality of life for the quantity of life

D. people are usually influenced by the behavior of their friends

69. To knowingly allow oneself to pursue unhealthy habits is compared by Fries and Crapo

to .

A. improving the quality of one's life

B. limiting one's personal health choice

C. ending one's life on purpose

D. breaking the rules of social behavior

70. According to Fries and Crapo, sound health choices should be based on .

A. personal decisions

B. society's laws

C. statistical evidence

D. friends' opinions

D

A new retail phenomenon from Japan which allows customers to walk away with free products is to launch in Britain.

From tomorrow, visitors to SampleTrend’s central London store can try anything on its shelves, and all of the products can be taken home without charge. For a nominal annual membership fee of £60, users are free to enter the shop once a month and help themselves to no less than £250 worth of goods every year. The only ‘catch’ is that shoppers are asked to complete a simple questionnaire about each product they try.

Known as ‘try-vertising’, the concept allows manufacturers to test products and receive consumer feedback before launching onto the open market. It is already very popular in Japan and now looks set to transform the fortunes of the embattled(严阵以待的)UK retail industry.

According to new figures, stores are facing a Christmas crisis with the weakest High Street trading for six months.

Michael Ghosh, the brainchild(创意者)behind SampleTrend, said: “The concept behind SampleTrend is unique in the UK. It allows shoppers the opportunity to walk away with a number of real, full-size products of their choosing without handing over a penny.”

The concept of in-store try-vertising is simple but effective. Businesses across all sectors, from cosmetic manufacturers to beverage(饮料)makers, place new products on the shelves at SampleTrend and wait for consumers to try them out.

Customers complete a short 10-point questionnaire about the product, and the feedback they provide is used to make any last-minute improvement before the product is brought officially to market. The SampleTrend store stocks everything from cosmetics, food and drink, and household goods.

Ghosh, the former advertising and sales director for Disney Europe, said such feedback may also build brand loyalty from the outset---a particularly appealing prospect for new businesses.

71. What can we know about the Sample Trend?

A. It has turned out to be a success in London.

B. The goods in the shop are free for everyone

C. The customers can only go to it once a month.

D. It sells everything people need.

72. The word “catch” (in para2) can be replaced by _________

A. advantage

B. disadvantage

C. problem

D. requirement

73. Which of following may not be found in Sample Trend?

A. soap

B. computer

C. chocolate

D. beer

74. The customers need to fill a questionnaire to________

A. give suggestions for the products

B. recommend the products

C. give feedback about the products

D. express their thanks

75. What is the purpose of SampleTrend?

A. To advertise the goods and build brand loyalty.

B. To improve people’s life.

C. To sell goods in low price but in large quantities.

D. To transform the fortunes of the embattled UK retail industry

第四部分: 写作(共两节,满分35分)

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分.满分10分)

阅读下面短文,请根据短文后的要求进行答题。(请注意题后的字数要求)An evergreen tree is a Christmas tradition in many American homes. The tree is usually a pine or fir(冷杉)dressed with lights and other colorful decorations.

Families might buy a cut tree or go to a tree farm and cut one down themselves. Some people bring a live tree in a pot into their home for the holidays and then put it back outdoors. Some people rent a Christmas tree. Companies might bring the same live tree to the same family year after year. Or the tree might get planted in a park or someplace else where it could help the environment.

There are some trees that can be reused year after year because they are made of plastic or metal. Or, instead of a tree, some people have a small, sweet-smelling rosemary(迷迭香)plant, cut to look like a little Christmas tree.

Another popular evergreen this time of year is the mistletoe(槲寄生)plant. It has small white berries and leaves that feel like leather. The traditional Christmas mistletoe is native to Europe. Ancient Druids believed mistletoe had magical powers. Mistletoe is a parasitic(寄生的)plant. It connects itself to a tree and steals nutrients and water.

And the poinsettia(一品红)is also one of the plants that many people connect with Christmas. Poinsettias __________ Mexico. They can be white or pink, but most are bright red. They are named after the first American ambassador to Mexico. Joel Poinsett liked them enough to send some back to the United States. Babies or pets that chew on poinsettias might get sick. But experts say the plant is not as poisonous as some people think.

参考范文:

Not only do our parents give us life, but they also, give us endless love and support, always sharing our happiness and sorrow.

I'm very grateful to my parents. They give me so much love and spare no effort to support me. I still remember once I was seriously ill, they were so worried and almost accompanied me the whole night. Now I'm in Senior 3. Luckily for me, my parents can understand my stressful condition and often communicate with me with encouraging words. Furthermore, they give me enough personal space, which I appreciate so much.

What I should do now is to study hard. When I grow up, I will try my best to make my parents live a happy life.

W: No, we’re going to make a large vase for some flowers. I like going to class and learning new things. It makes me feel good.

Text 2

M: Do you want the same cut as last time?

W: The same on top, but I’d like it a little longer over the ears and in the back.

Text 3

W: I wonder what’s happened to Jerry. He hasn’t been around for at least 2 weeks. M: He took leave to see his mother in Europe.

Text 4

Text 5

W: Lewis, Don told me that he could get you that Lady Gaga signature through a

friend at work if you’re still interested in getting it.

Text 6

W: Look at those pictures! They’re fantastic! You’re so talented, James. And wow, what a cool camera!

M: It’s a Nikon D200, and it’s really easy to use. But now, I’m planning to save up for a new Olympus E1. It will definitely cost me an arm and a leg.

W: Sounds quite professional. Anyway, would you please bring your camera with you next Sunday and take some pictures of us while we’re playing tennis?

M: Sure, you got it.

Text 7

M: There is just one problem, madam. Your driver’s license is no longer valid.

M: I do apologize, but this is our policy. If you want to continue with your deposit, you might have to go home and get it.

W: That’s OK. I’ll just come back tomorrow with my passport. I need to try to get a new license now. Otherwise, I won’t be able to drive home!

Text 8

M: Many young girls dream of being models. Now, my first question: How were you able to make your dream a reality?

W: I actually spent my childhood being a model. My mother put me in TV commercials and other advertisements when I was just a small baby.

M: Do you think that modeling has influenced your life at all?

W: It’s difficult to say. Sometimes I feel like it’s hard to make friends when you are a model. It seems like all they care about is my looks. I travel a lot, and that also puts a lot of stress on any relationships that I have.

M: What is your favorite part of being a model?

W: I really like all of the traveling that I get to do. I have been able to go to Europe and Latin America and a lot of other beautiful locations around the world. I think the best thing, though, is having people look at me and think that I’m beautiful. I love the attention.

M: Now, finally, do you have any advice for young girls that want to be models?

W: Sure! I just want to tell you guys never to give up, and don’t let anyone ever tell you that you are not beautiful… because everyone is beautiful in their own way!
