Step 2: Pre-reading (10 minues)

A. Reading the information about six men. Divide students into group to discuss if they were /are great men.

B.After discussing, the teacher will find that some stuents have different standard for great people. Some students can not judge famous people and great people. The teacher should help students defines great people: Most great people are also famous people but famous people may not be great people. A great person is someone who devotes his/her life to helping others. (for example, Neil Armstrong is a famous people but not a great people)

Step3: Reading(15minues)

A.Let the students look at the title and picture and predict what the reading is about.

Then ask them to skim throught it quickly and get the general idea of the text.

B.Teach the students some background knowledge of Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela served as the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Mandela joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961. In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela served 27 years in prison. As president, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation, while introducing policies aimed at combating poverty and inequality in South Africa. He is a universal symbol of social justice and an exemplary figure connoting non-racialism and democracy.

C.Let students listen to the redio with the following questions:
