It was Mother‘s Day and I was shopping at the local supermarket with my son who is five years old,Tenyson. As we were leaving after finishing our shopping,we realized that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground badly. Her husband was with her,but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Fortunately,a lot of people stopped to help out.

While we were walking towards the scene,Tenyson became very worried about what had happened to the elderly couple. He said to me,“Mom,it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.” Seeing that there was a flower stall(摊位) at the front of the supermarket,he

added,“Why shouldn t we buy the lady a flower? It will make her feel better.” I was amazed that he d come up with this sweet idea who was only a five-year-old boy. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted.“Just take it,” she replied.“I can‘t take your money for such a wonderful deed.”

By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great horror, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman’s husband and I told him it was from my son.At that, the old man started crying and said,“Thank you very much.”He then turned to me,“You have a wonderful son.Happy Mother‘s Day to you.”

The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love and appreciation in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son went down his body to the injured lady and tenderly

said,“Happy Mother’s Day to you,too.”

Jim was walking down a dimly lit street late one evening, hoping to see his lovely children as soon as possible. As he was walking quietly,Jim heard muffled(低沉的) screams coming from behind some bushes.Alarmed,Jim stopped to listen carefully. He realized that what he was hearing was the unmistakable sound of a struggle.Thinking of the danger,he became frightened.

Only yards from where Jim stood,a girl was being attacked.Jim didn’t know what to

do.Should he get involved in it?He was worried about his own safety and regretted having suddenly decided to take a new route home that night. He was afraid of becoming another victim. He was wondering whether he should just run to the nearest phone and call the police or went to fight with the attacker to save the unknown girl.

As he struggled from within, the girl‘s cries were growing weaker. Jim knew he had to act fast.Yet he knew he couldn’t just walk away from this.He realized that he could not turn his back on the fate of this unknown girl, even if it meant risking his own life.

Now,Jim was not a brave man,nor was he athletic.Even he himself didn‘t quite know where he found the moral courage and physical strength. However once he was determined to help the girl,he became strangely transformed. He ran behind the bushes and pulled the attacker off the girl, who panicked very much.Seeing Jim prevent him,the attacker became crazy and began to fight with him.Jim became fearless and they fell to the ground, where they wrestled for a few minutes until the attacker jumped up and escaped.Jim felt very tired and he couldn t catch the attacker. 注意:

I worked from the time I was four and raised seven children, all of them college graduates. It seemed I‘d done everything I d ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret.I was born in 1898,the oldest of five kids.Papa couldn’t spare me to go to school,so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.

Everywhere I went,I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can‘t read the alphabet.People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.

By 1928,I’d been wandering for nine years.I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school,I took my wife aside.“Elzenia,”I said.“I don‘t want the kids to know I can’t read or write.”

In 1938,one day my boss called me in.“George,” he said.“No one knows those machines like you do.I‘d like to promote you.” But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said,“Fill out this application and we ll get you a raise.” I couldn’t admit the truth.I thanked him and walked out of his office.I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn‘t stop working. For the next 25 years,I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.

A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It’s information about adult education classes.People can learn to read and write. Now I‘m 98.I thought of my friends and neighbors and what they might think if they found out I couldn’t read. After all these years,my secret would be out.But all my life I‘ve wanted to read.It was high time for action.

In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit (追寻) of the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him. Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral(葬礼)is Wednesday.” Memories flashed(闪现)through his mind like an old newsreel (新闻短片) as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. “Jack, did you hear me?” “Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said. “Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce (回忆) about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it, ” Mom told him. “I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said. “You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence (影响) in your life,” she said. “He’s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things that he thought were important. Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral.” Jack said. Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away. The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture … Jack stopped suddenly. “What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked. “The box is gone,” he said. “What box?” Mom ask ed. “There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’,” Jack said. It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it. “Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly. 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头已为你写好; 4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

Dana told him everything was a quarter except Nezumi, a cotton toy rat. It was gray with some cotton sticking out from the hole where an ear had been torn off. "Nezumi is extra special, so he's ten dollars. He needs a safe new home." Dana sighed. Tim laughed saying he didn't have ten dollars. Dana laughed, too and gave Nezumi to Tim as a free gift because he was her friend. When Tim whispered it was sort of old, Dana said old toys were the best. She then invited Tim to her birthday party the next evening, adding that her parents were giving her a real rat for her birthday. Tim was amazed and asked if it was a live rat. "Of course," Dana said. At home, Tim's mother showed him the gift she had bought for Dana. It was a knitting spool (编织线轴) shaped like a mushroom. Mom said Dana could knit a scarf for her doll. Tim sighed that Dana wasn't a knitting kind of person but a rat kind of person. Mom laughed after knowing what had happened. Together they drove to the pet store, where Tim searched and searched and selected a clear plastic ball, one in which the rat could run around on the floor safe from cats and dogs. Tim thought of Nezumi's ear and decided Dana's new rat would need this ball. The next day, Dana brought cupcakes to class. When she handed a cupcake to Tim, she asked if Tim brought Nezumi to school as Nezumi liked to ride in backpacks. Tim was at a loss because Nezumi was at home on his bed.
