开县位于重庆东北部、万州区北，地处大巴山南坡（占全境四分之一）与川东平行岭谷（占全境四分之三）的结合地带，介于北纬30°49′30″—31°41′30″与东经107°55′48″—108°54′之间，属国际东7时区。东邻溪、云阳，南接万县，西与开江相襟，北同城口、富汉毗连。县境呈北东南西走向，形状近似甜橙叶。长轴距离120公里，最宽距离50公里，总面积3969.89平方公里。 开县四面环山，疆界大多由山岭构成，自然界线分明。自明洪武六年（13 73）降州为县，迄今600余年，疆域四至基本没有大的变动。 一具资料记载：开县历经印支运动、四川运动两次地质运动，造成地质构造和展布十分复杂，成土母质分布零乱，各地差异很大。在地层上，从古生界的寒武系到新生界的全新统，除泥盆、石碳、白垩系和新老系外皆有出露。地质构造大体由铁峰背斜、开梁背斜、温泉背斜、浦里向斜、江里向斜和大巴山南坡支脉一字梁组成。出露地屋有七个系，即： 第四系：主要分布在江、东、浦、三条河流沿岸的一二级阶地。 侏罗系：主要分布在县境西部方山台地，开梁、铁峰背斜腰部，温泉背斜南翼。 三迭系：主要分布在三个背斜顶部。 二迭系：主要分布在县境东北角满月、白泉、关面、岩水诸乡。 志留系：主要分布在满月、白泉、关面乡部分村组。 奥陶系：仅出露于白泉、满月乡。 寒武系：仅出露于白泉乡百里村母猪峡一带。 县境南部的铁峰山背斜和开梁背斜平行对称排列，东北西南走向，形成条状低山。两背斜核部由嘉陵江和须家河组地层交错出露，两翼为巴东组、须家河组、自流井（或白田坝）组、沙溪庙组。铁峰背斜跨于凤山乡至华山乡，岩层倾角8°—18°。开梁背斜西南起于五通乡的岱峰村，止于渠口乡的风云村，南翼岩层倾角10°—25°，北翼15°—30°。两背斜其间的浦里向斜，南翼的长沙镇以东和岳溪镇以西，由新冲积、老冲积和沙溪庙地层构成，岩层倾角为20°—30°。 县境中部的江里向斜，西南至东北走向，西南宽敞，东北紧束的褶皱坪状低山，圆丘起伏，湾丘相连，山岭以蓬莱镇地层盖顶，东南翼由遂宁组、沙溪庙组、新冲积地层构成，岩层倾解3°—15°。西北翼由蓬莱镇连接沙溪庙构成，呈浅丘漕谷地貌，岩层倾角10°—24°。温泉背斜呈东西走向，西部紧束，东部疏展，西部间夹宣汉向斜翘头，东部接于大巴山脉，东起于河堰乡茅坝村，西止于三汇口乡分水村，轴线西头出现地腹状（即三汇口一一天和），东部扭摆幅度较宽，两翼褶皱频繁，水系深切，形成鼻状深丘，岩层倾角15°—67°。核部以嘉陵江、大冶、须家河组交错出露，两翼为巴东组、白田坝组、沙溪庙组构成。 北部一字梁山系大巴山的支脉。核部呈东西向，以奥陶系零星出露于志留系之上，群山连绵，呈窟窿状的深丘峡谷，以母猪峡为轴部，出露寒武系地层。两翼为奥陶系、志留系、二迭系及大冶组、嘉陵江组地层组合。由于断层较多，上述各系、组的岩层出露很零乱，岩层倾角在40°以上。 县内地质构造及地层分布有如下特点： 1、东西结构为主，展布地层多呈条状、鼻状、窟窿状则多为半园形或环形。 2、构造类型多，南部地层较新，北部地层较老，岩层倾角较大。 3、断层、裂隙、溶洞多。断层多为挤压性断层。大断层呈东西向，小断层 呈东南至西北向。以上表明，开县地壳运动是剧烈的。 二开县矿藏资源丰富。
