I had worried myself sick over Simon’s mother coming to see me. I was a new 21 , and I gave an honest account of the students’ work. In Simon’s case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn’t read his own handwriting.

22 he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his 23 .

So when Simon’s mother entered the room, my palms(手掌心) were sweating. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the 28 I had nurtured(培养) in her son. She kissed me again and left.

I sat, stunned(惊呆), for about half an hour, 29 what had just happened. How did I make such a life-changing difference to that boy without 30 knowing it? What I finally came to 31 was one day, several months before, when some students were 32 reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke 33 , and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon’s the expert on this. He is the 34 one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the 35 of the room.” That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, 36 more, and became happy. And it was all because he 37 to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed 38 was the one who took the last seat that day.

It taught me the most 39 lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came 40 and positively. A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

二、阅读理解

A

Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. Progress indicates a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead a better way of doing things. All these, however, remains true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things.

However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or to see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and iPads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally. A personal visit carries with the additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse ourselves or turn the other person off.

With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handcrafts(手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.

Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.

It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.

Peer pressure is all about being forced into a certain way of living, dressing, talking, socializing and even thinking — simply because that is how everyone else you know behaves, dresses, talks, socializes and thinks.

Young people can be often insensitive in their dealings with each other. And they are very quick to notice differences of habit, dress and social behavior. As a result, you might have to buy the latest fashions in clothes and other things. Because everyone else does the same, regardless of cost or comfort. You might end up reading what they read, watching the same television programs and movies that others watch and using the same language that they use. Because, otherwise, you feel left out of all the conversation. You might end up staying out late at night or eating out all the time, simply because that is what the others do, regardless of whether you can afford to or not.

The best way to deal with peer pressure is to select your friends very carefully. Preferably, your friends should be in a mixed group of people. That keeps everyone rooted and more tolerant(容忍) of differences.

The second is to gather your courage and to tell people to mind their own business, if and when they begin to interfere with your life. Sure, a few people may be offended(冒犯). But they will also learn to be less offensive themselves, in future.

And most importantly, you have to remember that you are an individual and a unique one. And your decisions to eat, drink, dress, talk, go out, read or think are your own. If others don’t share these interests or habits, too bad. Let your peers and friends catch up with you. If they can’t, find new friends.

41.If you are forced into a certain way of thinking and acting like everyone you know, you _______.

A.are suffering from peer pressure B.are losing yourself

C.are learning from them D.are getting on well with them

42.Why might you have to buy the latest fashions in clothes and other things? _______

A.Because you like them.B.Because you want to catch up with others.

45.The main purpose of this passage is _______.

A.to tell young people how to get along with their friends

C.to tell young people how to live an independent life

D.to tell young people how to deal with peer pressure

Many cities have subways and underground public transportation to take locals and tourists alike rapidly around the city. However, there’s something different about riding a London subway. It may not look different, but the historical value of one of England’s most popular forms of transportation is enough to make riding the subway a must when visiting London. With a little under 300 different stations, the subway can take you almost anywhere you need to go.

Riding a London subway, a person from other countries will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness ― people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet thinking. Nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.

Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(使用月票上下班者). Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000 yes, that’s 40,000 “apps” have been designed.

Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers. One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination. iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣) of choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm(手掌) DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV shows or films

on the way to work. With all these distractions, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train. 46.Those who want to save time to reach where they go can download _______ to their iPhones.

A.iShoot B.Tube Exits C.iSteam D.iPod

47.People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because _______.

A.they are going to work and have no time to communicate with each other

B.they love reading books and do not want to be disturbed

C.they feel sleepy because of getting up early

D.they are busy playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or watching films

48.The underlined word “apps” in the fourth paragraph means _______.

A.computers B.programs downloaded for the iPhone

C.computer companies D.fortune from London commuters

49.Which word best describes the writer’s attitude towards commuters’ behaviors? _______

A.positive B.negative C.fair D.hateful

50.The main idea of the passage is that _______.

A.London commuters are unfriendly to strangers

B.Apple has earned a lot of money from selling 40,000 apps

C.riding a London subway is a must when visiting London

D.technology is changing how London commuters spend their traveling time

D

You know how wonderful you are, and you know that others know how wonderful you are, but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy(嫉妒)? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is. Don’t let jealousy ruin your relationships. Tackle(处理)it head-on and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.

It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you’ll have to do just that. Don’t approach them and ask why they are jealous of you (unless of course you want to appear totally proud), just take some time alone with them and let them know that you’ve been feeling like there’s been something coming between you. If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling. Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.

When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what she/he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example, she/he says that she/he feels like she/he doesn’t get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from the swim team then maybe you could invite her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you. Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise. Don’t limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy. Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.

Even the best of friendships can be affected by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can

turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can’t, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won’t.

51.According to the author, the jealousy emotion is _______.

A.abnormal B.productive C.destructive D.extreme

52.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to face your friend when jealousy happens? _______ A.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her what the problem is.

B.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her why he/she is jealous of you.

C.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know how you feel.

D.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know you think there’s something between you. 53.The underlined “it” in the first paragraph refers to _______.

A.jealousy B.relationship C.admiration D.friendship

54.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? _______

A.Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.

B.There’s always a solution to solve the problem of jealousy.

C.You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts, chances or development.

D.You're supposed to go a long way with your friend to work out a solution

55.The purpose of the passage is _______.

A.to explain what causes jealousy

B.to offer some advice on making friends

C.to clarify how destructive the jealous emotion is

D.to introduce the way to cope with a jealous friend

You may think that inventions are far away from your daily life. But in fact, almost everyone can invent. It’s just that they do not recognize that their idea could be the start of an invention. Once inventors see their ideas have some practical value, they don't let them slip away.

For example, the inventor of the dishwasher, American Josephine Cochrane, loved to give dinner parties. But she found it took too long to wash her dishes by hand and too many of them broke. She decided that a machine could do the job faster and with fewer mistakes. So, in I886, she set out to make one for herself.

Like Cochrane's, most inventions are created to solve a problem. So, the first and most important step is to find the problem.

Start by looking at what is wrong with things you use now and ask people around if they remember ever saying: “I wish someone would invent something for…” Then you might notice situations or things in need of improvement.

The next step is to think about possible solutions. An invention is a new way of solving a problem. So think of many, varied, and unusual ways.

You can often come up with a solution for a problem by looking at it from a different angle or thinking about it

in a new way.

After all, most inventions are not brand new. They do not come out of nowhere, but of things or ideas that already exist.

And the hardest part of inventing, even for a lot of inventors, is coming up with a problem and finding a solution. Once you have an idea, you can always get help building your invention.

This problem-solving technique can also work in your everyday lives. So, why not try it in your studies, in your relationship with others, or even in the way you look at the world!

56.According to the passage, how are inventors different from other people?(no more than 15 words)

57.Why did Cochrane decide to invent a dishwasher?(no more than 20 words)
