Eight-year-old Bethany and seven-year-old Eliza are having a great time jumping around in the orchard of their home in a village near Penrith. They can play any time they like because they don’t go to school. Instead, they are educated at home by their parents, Paul and Veronika Robinson. But they don’t have lessons, have never used a timetable and learn only what and when they want to learn.

“I want my kids to have freedom in their childhood, not spend it in an institution,” says 37-year-old Veronika, “School is all about control and following the rules.” Veronika and her 56-year-old husband Paul have never experienced the daily hurry to get dressed and out of the door that is common in most families with school-aged children. “We usually get up at around 8:30,” says Veronika. “We might visit a friend, or go to the library, and on Tuesdays we shop at the market. In summer, we spend most of our time outside and the girls please themselves a lot.”

New research that is going to be published this spring shows a very different picture of Britain’s home educators. “Out of 297 families, 184 said that they never use a timetable,” says Mike Fortune-Wood of Home Education UK. “Ninety per cent never or hardly use textbooks, and nearly all said that happiness, satisfaction and self-fulfillment(自我实现) were more important than academic achievement. Only 15% felt that planning what to learn was crucial.”

So far, so good. But what, you might ask, are the children actually learning?

“It wasn’t important to me that the girls could read by a certain age, but they both picked it up for themselves at around seven,” says Robinson. “Weighing cooking ingredients uses maths, and making a shopping list teaches them to write. Observing five hens has taught the girls about survival of the fittest. ”

But what about when the children grow up? Can they go to university? The home educators’answer is they can if they want to. There are a variety of routes into higher education, but probably the most common is to join a local college. This is what Gus Harris-Reid ha s done. “I was educated at home all my life. I’d never had a lesson or been inside a classroom until I started GCSEs,” says the 18-year-old. “I’m now studying for 4 A-levels at Exeter College. I’ve had no problem with the work or with fitting in.” When ask ed to reflect on his experience of home education, his considered response(反应) is, “Like a permanent holiday, really!” Not a bad start for someone who plans to take a mechanical engineering degree next year.

44. What is the topic of this article?

A. New ways of learning to read and write

B. Problems with UK schools

C. Home education in the UK

D. Wild, undisciplined children

45. Why do the Robinsons not send their children to school?

A. They think schools control children too much.

Professor Martin’s report says that children who attend a number of different schools, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an unusually large number of such children are mentally affected.

The professor s ays “It’s true, my personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. Our findings are based on research and not on any personal feelings that I or many assistants may have on the subject.”

Captain Thomas James, an Army lecturer for the past 20 years and himself a father of two, said, “I’ve never heard of such rubbish. Taking me for example, no harm is done to the education of my children, who change schools regularly—if they keep to the same system, as in our Army schools. In my experience—and I’ve known quite a few of them—Army children are as well adjusted as any others, if not more so. What the professor doesn’t appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situation children will adapt much better than grown-ups.”

When this was put to Professor Martin, he said that at no time had his team suggested that all children were backward or mentally affected in some way, but simply that in their experience there was a clear tendency.

“Our findings show that while the very bright children can deal wi th regular changes without harming his or her general progress in studies, the majority of children suffer from constantly having to enter a new learning situation”.

48. According to the passage, Professor Martin’s personal feeling __________.

A. is the opposite of what his report has shown

B. is in a way supported by his research

C. has played a big part in his research

B. have not been affected by changing schools

C. like every army school they have been in

D. are the brightest among the children who often change school

50. According to Professor Martin, __________ suffer from changing schools regularly.

A. non-army children

B. bright children

C. the majority of children

D. few children

51. Captain Thomas believes that children __________.

A. are generally better adjusted (适应的) than any others

B. are usually less experienced than any others

C. can adapt(适应) much more easily and quickly than grown-ups

D. can adapt as easily and quickly as grown-ups

D

It is natural that children are curious (好奇的) about the world around them. For example, they want to know how their hearts beat. They want to know why the ocean water tastes salty.

As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they are interested in the parts of their bodies and in the smiles of their mothers. They become interested in the physical world around them: the plants, the animals, the sky. Later, they become interested in the things that people have made: wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity continues. Sometimes this curiosity leads to a career (生涯、职业) in science.

Scientists spend their lives trying to find out about the world. Those who work with the earth sciences study the earth, the oceans, and the skies. Other scientists who study living things work with the biological sciences. A third group of scientists study the physical sciences, e. g. physics, chemistry.

These scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart beats fast when you run. They say that when you are quiet, your heart normally beats sixty-five or seventy-five times a minute. Your heart is a pump (泵) that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries to them. The muscles need oxygen, too. So your brain sends a signal to the heart. The signal means that the muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles. It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute.

Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why does the ocean water taste salty” scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.

We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.

52. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

A. People are curious in the same way.

C. Men and women are curious about different things.

D. People of different ages are interested in different things

四、任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how.

1) Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

2) Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

3) Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

4) Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

5) Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.

There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A While most high school students spend most of their time worrying about who likes who, and different relationships between their classmates, I choose to focus on my school lessons and sports. When I was young, my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys in order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy with the title of boyfriend. It's indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite sex(异性). In my opinion, even though some high school relationship might continue after graduation, the probability of them lasting much longer is so slim (微小的) that there really is not a point to it. Firstly you have to think about such a question----whether it is possible to hurt both of you, or even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date(约会) if you hope marriage could possibly follow. Except this, there really is not any other reason for dating. Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic (浪漫的). While these are nice to have, there are many more important things at this point in our lives. The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high school students. Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us. I strongly advise we should deal with it in a proper way and follow our teachers’ advice if necessary. 21. The author writes this passage probably for_ to read. A. high school students B. school teachers C. parents and teachers D. married couples 22. Between the opposite sexes, the relationship of being good friends might be__ than that of being boy/girl friends. A. weaker B. safer C. slimmer D. stronger 23. How does the writer like the idea of dating among the students? A. Dating is a nice chance for students to be romantic. B. Studying is far more important than dating in school C. In high school dating can surely lead to future marriage D. Dating in high school is sure to hurt your future family 24. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph might refer to_ . A. the title of boyfriend or girlfriend at school B. advice given by both teachers and parents C. the pressure from school lessons and sports D. the relationship between students of opposite sexes B “Let’s go Dutch, shall we?” Jim said after a dinner to his friends in a restaurant. What does Jim mean? Long ago, there was a kind of dinner called Dutch treat. At a Dutch treat, the invited guests were expected to pay for their own share of the food and drink. Now, Dutch treat means when friends go out to have fun, each person pays his or her own share. There are many other expressions related with “Dutch” in American English. However, most of them were first used in England in the 17th century. At that time, the British and the Dutch were war enemies. So when British people talked about something wrong or bad, they would like to use the word “Dutch”. A common expression heard a few years ago was in Dutch. A friend may tell you, “You are in Dutch. The teacher is angry with you. Be careful!” When a soldier took Dutch leave, he left the army without permission. Dutch courage is the false courage produced by the effects of drinking wine. When someone has just said something you do n’t believe is true, you can say “I am a Dutch-man.” There is one expression that did come from the Dutch. That is to talk like a Dutch uncle. The Dutch were known for the strict and serious way they educated their children. 25. What did people mean by sa ying “Let’s go Dutch”? A. The guests should leave first. B. Each person should pay his or her own bill C. The food should be better next time. D. People should go to another restaurant. 26. According to the passage, the British in the 17th century ______. A. first used the word "Dutch" B. were mistaken for Dutch people C. got along well with the Dutch people D. used the word "Dutch" for something bad
