Hello, ladies and gentlemen, I feel honored to introduce our speaker for today's lecture, Dr. Roger Webster. Dr. Webster, Professor of Sociology at Princeton University, has written numerous articles and books on the issue of communication, which is more and more important in the society nowadays, even has a profound impact on one's career and dally life as well. Welcome, Dr. Webster. Dr. Webster:

Hello, everyone. Before we start today's lecture, you can use a little time to think about if you are a good communicator or not. And why?

Communication has been the major ingredient for the upgradation of the apes into human beings. Before language and the science of semantics were developed, facial expressions and body movements were the most sought-after means for communication. Slowly the language started shaping up and now we have countless thousand dialects.

Language is a medium that binds all human beings. It is the unique form, which has been exploited and used to the maximum by us. But somewhere down the line, we used it only for the purpose of communication and not for enriching our knowledge and to increase our market value. You would be thinking what I am getting at? In the following few lines, I will clear all the question marks in your head. Tell me the number of times you have been fascinated by a talk or lecture given by someone. Maybe once or twice or maximum thrice. Now the point to ponder is what was the distinguishing feature of that persuasive speaker that didn't make your eyelids heavy with sleep? He would have had the skill to maneuver all your thinking, listening and visual channels towards him.

Closer observation would reveal that change of tone at the appropriate time, fluency in language, and proper translation of thoughts into words make his speech all the more appealing. He is able to give you what you want to hear and what he wanted to give the audience in terms of knowledge. And when this success ratio is unity, you never skip a word from the speaker.

Communication skills are an important strength and they add a very important dimension to your personality.

When you communicate clearly and openly, you always make your wants, needs and doubts obvious. This clarity is essential to market yourself. You may not be that well qualified, but with good communication skills you can crack your interview and you can sell yourself convincingly. You then don't try to fill in a vacancy in a company but make a place for yourself.

Some of the essential tips for communication include:

Be clear, concise and straightforward.

Keep your sentences short. This will avoid grammatical mistakes.

Look into the eyes of the person you are speaking to. This gives a glimpse of your sincerity and dedication to the other person.

Even if you slip up somewhere, maintain your calm, apologize and continue. Don't try to reanalyze such slip ups, because we wish to promote ourselves.

So from now on communicate clearly, properly and openly, as after all the world doesn't know what you need. Does it?

That's the end of today's lecture. I hope it will be helpful to all of you. Thank you!

Today, roller skating is easy and fun. But a long time ago, it wasn't easy at all. Before 1750, the idea of skating didn't exist. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin's work was making musical instruments. In his spare time he liked to play the violin. Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams who was called a dreamer by the people.

One day, Merlin received an invitation to attend a fancy dress ball. He was very pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think how to make a grand entrance at the party. He had an idea and thought he would get a lot of attention if he could skate into the room. Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin. On the night of the party Merlin roiled into the room playing his violin and everyone was astonished to see him. There was just one problem that Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. He rolled on and on. Suddenly, he ran into a huge mirror that was hanging on the wall. Down fell the mirror, breaking to pieces. Nobody forgot Merlin's grand entrance for a long time!

C.The technology.

D.The disease.

A

[听力原文]

Stockbrokers, automobile dealers, mail carriers, Insurance and real estate agents, have you ever imagined their fates? The Internet will eradicate all these middlemen by the millions. Besides all these middleman jobs, other jobs that are considered very common and necessary, will disappear in the 21st century.

The first will be the teacher. Distance learning is becoming more popular through the miracle of online classes and electronic grading. People may never have to sit in a classroom and face the teacher, listening and taking notes any more. The only thing they need to do is to find a computer instead, but not go to school. The second will be the prison guard. A kind of sensor will be put into prisoners' brains. The sensor will restrain prisoners from engaging in criminal activity. But now this technology still requires lots of improvements. The next will be truckers. There will be a kind of "smart" device set on both sides of roads that can enable all computer-driven vehicles to travel point to point at the same high speed, without any accidents. The printer may disappear, too. Magazines and newspapers will switch to digital paper. More and more people will be familiar with the E-magazine, E-newspaper, even E-shopping.

In the end, maybe many years later, robots will become very common, like cars. Every family will own various kinds of robots to buy the food, to clean the home, and maybe, to take care of the children. Then, housekeepers can be liberated from housework forever.

What will cause millions of middlemen to disappear in the future?

Moderator:

Hello everybody, I am happy to introduce our respectable speaker for today's lecture, Dr. Lincoln Duncan. Dr. Duncan, Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, has written numbers of articles and books on the topic of enemies for the recent years, he says in his books that everybody should admit having enemies, no matter how humble and generous they are. OK. Let's welcome, Dr. Duncan.

Dr. Duncan:

Hello, everyone. First answer my quick question: have you got an enemy in your life? Most of you may say yes. But you may misunderstand what I really mean. The enemy we are talking about today is the one inside your heart.

We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some of our fears are brought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you, by what you've read in the papers. Some fears are valid, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o'clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won't need to live in fear of it.

Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. Fear can destroy fortunes. Fear can destroy relationships. Fear, if left unchecked, can destroy our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies lurking inside us.

The second enemy we face is indecision. Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future. Take a sword to this enemy.

The third enemy inside is doubt. Sure, there's room for healthy skepticism. You can't believe everything. But you also can't let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities. Worse of all, they doubt themselves. I'm telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart. Doubt is an enemy. Go after it. Get rid of it.

The fourth enemy within is worry. We've all got to worry about something. Just don't let it conquer you. Instead, let it alarm you. Worry can be useful. If you step off the curb in New York City and a taxi is coming, you've got to worry. But you can't let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here's what you've got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you've got to get it. Whatever is pushing on you, you've got to push back.

The fifth interior enemy is over-caution. It is the timid approach to life. Timidity is not a virtue; it's an illness. If you let it go, it'll conquer you. Timid people don't get promoted. They don't advance and grow and become powerful in the marketplace. You've got to avoid over-caution.

Do battle with the enemy. Do battle with your fears. Build your courage to fight what's holding you back, what's keeping you from your goals and dreams. Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become.

Hope you enjoyed today's talk. Thank you!

As a result of rising university costs, many students are finding it necessary to take on part-time jobs. To make finding those jobs easier, our services put together a listing of what's available locally.

For some students, these part-time jobs could lead to full-time work after graduation, as they may offer experience in their own field, whatever in field of finance, marketing or even management.

For example, National Saving Bank offers a job on a half time basis. That's twenty hours a week. Retail stores and restaurants have positions requiring fewer hours.

Even less time is expected of those providing child-care. We have a number of families registered with us who were looking for baby sitters for as few as 4 hours a week. For students who prefer outdoor work, there are seasonal positions right on campus, working with the gardening teams.

These often require the most time and are the least flexible in terms of scheduling. To see a complete list of these and other available jobs, including the salary offered and the hours required, stop by our office.

Oh, and be sure to bring a resume with you. When you find something that interests you, we'll put you in touch with the person offering it. In addition, our counselors will give you hints about successful interviewing.

We do hope you would like our service and get some help from us. We'll try to have more information to help you. Suggestions are welcome.

[听力原文]

In the late 1400s, when Christopher Columbus returned to Spain from the western part of the earth, he brought with him a sample of corn. Corn is a popular and nutritious type of food we have today in our daily diet.

The corn that Columbus introduced to Europe was originally native to Mexico. The people of the Americans probably started to plant this grass as early as 5000 B.C.

After about a thousand years, they had developed highly productive types of corn which later became the basis for the great pro-Columbian civilizations. Actually, many countries regarded corn as one of their basic crops.

To certain degree, we can say that many ancient cities were built on corn. Corn is one of the major foods both for men and some domesticated animals, such as chicks and pigs. The corn and the people who cultivated it developed together. Without humans to care for it, corn could not survive. There were times when some natural disasters stroke corn planting. The people who planted corn

made great effort to protect it from being destroyed. They tried to gather the seeds to enlarge the planting areas.

The planting people tried various ways to enhance the production of corn. They tried to get rid of the weeds and fertilized corn at proper times. They also had to make sure corn is watered when there's a lack of rain.

Hello, ladies and gentlemen, it gives me a great honor to introduce our speaker for today's lecture, Dr. Bruce Nixon. Dr. Nixon, Professor of Sociology at University of Toronto, has written numerous articles and books on the issue of lifestyle, his books have been published in more than eight languages in the world and won lots of popularity. Welcome, Dr. Nixon.

Dr. Nixon:

Hello, everyone, today, our lecture is about lifestyle.

Abundance is a life style, a way of living your life. It isn't something you buy now and then or pull down from the cupboard, dust off and use once or twice, and then return to the cupboard.

Abundance is a philosophy; it appears in your physiology, your value system, and carries its own set of beliefs. You walk with it, sleep with it, bath with it, feel with it, and need to maintain and take care of it as well.

Abundance doesn't always require money. Many people live with all that money can buy yet live empty inside. Abundance begins inside with some main self-ingredients, like love, care, kindness and gentleness, thoughtfulness and compassion. Abundance is a state of being. It radiates outward. It shines like the sun among the many moons in the world.

Being from the brightness of abundance doesn't allow the darkness to appear or be in the path unless a choice to allow it to. The true state of abundance doesn't have room for lies or games normally played. The space is too full of abundance. This may be a challenge because we still need to shine for others to see.

Abundance is seeing people for their gifts and not what they lack or could be. Seeing all things for their gifts and not what they lack.

Start by knowing what your abundances are, fill that space with you, and be fully present from that state of being. Your profession of choice is telling you of knowing and possibilities. That is their gift. Consultants and customer service professionals have the ministrative assistants and virtual assistants have an abundance of coordination and time management. Abundance is all around you, and all within. See what it is; love yourself for what it is, not what you're missing, or what that can be better, but for what it is at this present moment.

Be in a state of abundance of what you already have. I guarantee they are there; it always is buried but there. Breathe them in as if they are the air you breathe because they are yours. Let go of anything that isn't abundant for the time being. Name the shoe boxes in your closet with your gifts of abundance; pull from them every morning if needed. Know they are there.

Learning to trust in your own abundance is required. When you begin to be within your own space of abundance, whatever you need will appear whenever you need it. That's just the way the higher powers set this universe up to work. Trust the universal energy. The knowing of it all will humble you to its power yet let the brightness of you shine everywhere it needs to. Just by being from a state of abundance, it is being you.

Hope you enjoy it. Thank you!

[听力原文]

People who are grabbing coffee or a meal at a restaurant are sure to have some time on their hands while they waiting to place their orders and receive their food. All the while, they often wish they had something quick, light, and interesting to read.

A single, thick sheet of paper fills that need and serves neighborhood businesses in 700 U.S. communities and 400 other places around the world.

It's a weekly publication that's printed, front and back, in three columns, and placed in shelves for customers to pick up. The middle column is filled with wise sayings, trivia items, notes about the day in history and unconventional stories. The two outside columns are packed with advertisements for neighborhood car washes, wedding photographers, pest-control companies and so forth. The whole sheet takes about 10 minutes to read.

The idea originated in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1982, with a woman named Jean Baum. She had seen restaurant patrons pick up sugar packs from their containers on the table and read the brief, entertaining words printed on the back.

She began distributing a small newspaper, loaded with breezy reading materials, to restaurants, coffee shops, barber shops, and even hospital waiting rooms. She called it Coffee News. Pretty soon, other businesses started calling her, asking for copies to give to their customers, and it wasn't long before she was selling Coffee News distribution rights all across Canada.

When Baum died of cancer in 2007, Bill Buckley purchased worldwide distribution rights. The former potato farmer in the northeastern state of Maine had obtained the first Coffee News distribution right in the United States 12 years earlier.

Different colors can affect us in many different ways, that's according to Verity Allen. In her new series Color Me Healthy, Verity looks at the ways that colors can influence how healthy we are and the choices we make.

"Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colors for the same things?" says Verity. "Our toothpaste is always white or blue or maybe red. It's never green. Why not? For some reason we think that blue and white is clean, while we think of green products as being a bit disgusting.

It's the same for businesses. We respect a company which writes its name in blue or black, but we don't respect one that uses pink or orange. People who design new products can use these ideas to influence what we buy. "

During this four-part series, Verity studies eight different colors, two colors in each program. She meets people who work in all aspects of the color industry. Some of the people she meets clearly have very little scientific knowledge to support their ideas, such as the American "Color Doctors" who believe that serious diseases can be cured by the use of colored lights. However, she also interviews real scientists who are studying the effects of green and red lights on mice, with some surprising results.

Overall, it's an interesting show, and anyone who watches it will probably find out something new. But because Verity goes out of her way to be polite to everyone she meets on the series, it's up to the viewers to make their own decisions about how much they should believe.

Hello, ladies and gentlemen, it gives me a great honor to introduce our speaker for today's lecture, Dr. Thomas Wood. Dr. Wood, Professor of Sociology at University of California, has written numerous articles and books on the topic of interpersonal relationship, which troubles most people nowadays. Welcome, Dr. Wood.

Dr. Wood:

I have heard lots of complaints from friends that they feel unsafe and upset about everyday life. A difficult relationship, a stressful lifestyle, a fast pace of life and some tough situations to deal with. Before I give my reply, I just think about it for a while. What's the source of so much unhappiness? What sounds or impressions are you making on the people around you? Think about it. Your words, phrases, even your message may soon be forgotten but believe me, good or bad, your melody lingers.

An odd choice of phrase? Not really. The dictionary defines "melody" as a succession of sounds, and what is life other than the combining and blending of a succession of movements and sounds.

Just as a musical composition affects the moods and emotions of people who hear it, so does the way you live your life.

Think of your life as a blank sheet of manuscript paper. Only the rhythm is there—it is up to you to create the harmony. Naturally you will want your composition to be a success, a chart buster even a Symphony—something to be remembered with pleasure.

So where to begin?

You must begin with yourself. Have the right attitude, enjoy life, and most importantly, be optimistic about the future. Be genuinely interested in other people. Make a conscience effort to bring peace and happiness into other people's lives. Avoid situations that generate excessive ambition, envy, anger and pride. They are all enemies of peace and will ruin your harmony.

It has been said that if these emotions or feelings were banished, the world would live in perpetual peace. Well, to banish them from the world is probably aiming a bit high but it shouldn't be too difficult to rid them from your own life.

Develop traits such as tact, diplomacy, compassion and sensitivity. These attributes are invaluable in enhancing not only your own life but the lives of those around you. Everything you do has an effect on those around you. The way you move, whether you smile or frown. You are capable of making someone's day bright or miserable. Take time to listen to other people. If there are too many discords and not enough harmony in their lives, encourage them to have a brighter outlook. Throughout the world most people are striving for peace. From the family unit seated around the dinner table to world leaders at the conference table, the name of the game is the pursuit of peace. So, let us all play our part in composing the rhythm of life by consciously choosing peace and harmony in our daily lives to create a harmonious universe.

If one of the suggestions I give you today is helpful to you in the future, I will feel really happy for giving you this speech. Thank you very much!

C.The wheat and corn production decreased everywhere.

D.Rice and soybean yields kept balanced around the world.

D

[听力原文]

A new study says climate change has reduced the world's wheat and corn production. The study says rice and soybean yields have also decreased in some places—but increased in others. In the words of the researchers: "For soybeans and rice, winners and losers largely balanced out."

The researchers studied climate trends and global crop production between 1980 and 2008. They found that climate changes "are already exerting a considerable drag on yield growth" and may have affected food prices.

The study used computer models linking crop yields to weather. The researchers compared the results to what the yields might have been without climate changes. They found that corn production decreased by almost four percent and wheat production decreased by 5.5 percent.

Warming temperatures were reported in almost all of Europe, much of Asia and some of South America and Africa. During the study period most countries had greater temperature changes from year to year than they have had historically. But the study says the United States was an important exception—at least so far.

Corn and wheat yields in most of North America remained about the same. Russia's wheat yields decreased the most. The largest loss in corn yields were in India and Brazil.

Wolfram Schlenkerj, one of the researchers, says the report can serve as a planning tool for policy makers. If they are worried about rising food prices, it might be good to conduct some research about breeding for heat tolerance and maybe even drought tolerance.

C.The percentage of students feeling overwhelmed is decreasing.

D.The survey is concerned with emotional health and stress.

D

[听力原文]

For years the University of California, Los Angeles, has done a national survey of first-year college students. Some of the questions in the Freshman Survey relate to emotional health and stress. Last year, 29 percent said they often felt "overwhelmed" by all they had to do in their last year of high school. That was two percentage points higher than the year before. There was a big difference between men and women. Almost 40 percent of women reported feeling that level of stress, compared to just 18 percent of men.

Experts say a lot of students are under too much pressure from parents and schools. They are not enjoying what can be the incredible satisfaction of learning and developing understandings and skills. Learning can be an adventure. But instead of being an adventure, it's really about the test and the college application.

Deborah Stipek is the dean of the School of Education at Stanford University in California. She recently wrote about this issue in the journal Science. She used the example of her own daughter in high school. Her daughter has taken advancement placement courses in French to earn credit toward college. She told her mother she would be happy to never speak French again.

Prof. Stipek thinks that revealed the real basic problem, which is the courses that her daughter was taking in French were not about learning French, not about being able to communicate with a different culture, or to travel, or to have a skill that could be useful in life. It was about getting a score on a test that would help her get into the college of her choice.

It is the moment when his emotions achieve their most powerful sway over him, and afterward when you say to this person ―the world today‖ or ―life‖ or ―reality‖ he will assume that you mean this moment, even if it is fifty years past. The world, through his unleashed(释放的)emotions, imprinted itself upon him, and he carries the stamp of that passing moment forever. For me, this momentfour years in a moment in historywas the war. The war was and is reality for me. I still instinctively live and think in its atmosphere. These are some of its characteristics: Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the president of the United States, and he always has been. The other two eternal world leaders are Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. America is not, never has been, and never will be what the song and poems call it, a land of plenty. Nylon, meat, gasoline, and steel are rare. There are too many jobs and not enough workers. Money is very easy to earn but rather hard to spend, because there isnt very much to buy. Trains are always late and always crowded with ―service men‖. The war will always be fought very far from America, and it will never end. Nothing in America stands still for very long, including the people who are

I think games are going to be the most significant art form of the 2lst century, he says. It is, you might think, exactly what would be expected of someone introduced as a professor ofgaming. But Jenkins is much more than that. He is the director of a graduate program in comparativemedia studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, which also covers film, television and other mass media. Games are a significant but not the primary focus of theprogram, he says. Our approach has been to integrate games more fully into the study of media, rather thanapply them in one specialized field. The problem is that video games have yet to achieve respectability. They are often seenroughly of equal status with pornography (色情资料),providing instant contentment for thesort of people no one would invite to a dinner party.Practically everyone plays video games, butyou may feel guilty if you are caught at it. We have probably all had lectures pointing out that laziness is immoral, that it is wasteful, and that lazy people will never amount to anything in life. But laziness can be more harmful than that, and it is often caused by more complex reasons rather than simple wish to avoid work. Some people who appear to be lazy are suffering from much more serious problems. They may be so distrustful of their fellow workers that they are unable to join in any group task for fear of ridicule or of having their idea stolen. These people who seem lazy may be ruined by a fear of failure that prevents fruitful work. Or other sorts of fantasies (幻想) may prevent work; some people are so busy planning, sometimes planning great deals of fantastic achievements that they are unable to deal with whatever "lesser" work is on hand. Still other people are not avoiding work; strictly speaking, they are merely procrastinating rescheduling their day.

Main Energies for the Body A balanced diet is one that provides an adequate intake of energy and nutrients for maintenance of the body and therefore good health. A diet can easily be adequate for normal bodily functioning, yet may not be a balanced diet. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are a rapid source of energy, they are the body's fuel. The bulk of a balanced diet should be made from carbohydrates. If eaten in an excess of the dietary requirements carbohydrates are easily stored as fats in the cells, although carbohydrate is the first source of energy in the body. An average adult requires about 12,000kJ of energy a day, most of this is supplied by the respiration of carbohydrates in the cells. Carbohydrates are used principally as a respiratory substrates, i.e. to be oxidized to release energy for active transport, macromolecule synthesis, cell division and muscle contraction. Carbohydrates are digested in the duodenum and ileum and absorbed as glucose into cells. Sources of carbohydrates such as starch are rice, potatoes, wheat and other cereals. Sugars are also carbohydrates, sources of sugars are refined sugar - sucrose, which is a food sweetener and preservative and fruit sugars - fructose. If the diet lacks carbohydrate stores of fat are mobilized and used as an energy source. Proteins Protein is not a direct source of energy in the body, it is used primarily for growth and repair of body tissues while remaining an energy source as a last resort. Proteins fulfill a wide variety of roles in the body. They are broken down in the stomach and intestines to amino acids which are then absorbed. The body can only form 8 amino acids to build proteins from, the diet must provide Essential Amino Acids (EAAs) which are synthesized into proteins which can be structural, i.e. collagen in bone, keratin in hair, myosin and actin in muscle; metabolic enzymes, hemoglobin, protective antibodies and communicative hormones.

2018年12月英语六级阅读练习题及答案(三) Racket, din clamor, noise, whatever you want to call it, unwanted sound is Americas most widespread nuisance. But noise is more than just a nuisance. It constitutes a real and present danger to peoples health. Day and night, at home, at work, and at play, noise can produce serious physical and psychological stress. No one is immune to this stress. Though we seem to adjust to noise by ignoring it, the ear, in fact, never closes and the body still respondssometimes with extreme tension, as to a strange sound in the night. The annoyance we feel when faced with noise is the most common outward symptom of the stress building up inside us. Indeed, because irritability is so apparent, legislators have made public annoyance the basis of many noise abatement programs. The more subtle and more serious health hazards associated with stress caused by noise traditionally have been given much less attention. Nevertheless, when we are annoyed or made irritable by noise, we should consider these symptoms fair warning that other thing may be happening to us, some of which may be damaging to our health. Of many health hazards to noise, hearing loss is the most clearly observable and measurable by health professionals. The other hazards are harder to pin down. For many of us, there may be a risk that exposure to the stress of noise increases susceptibility to disease
