Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Recreation is for everyone! Too often recreation is considered something that is fine for children, but an indication of unwillingness to work on the part of adults. The recre-ative experience brings balance into man's life? and can be the most dominant social force in modern society.

There are three principal factors in the daily life of every adult, his work, by which he earns his living;his leisure, in which he gains much of his reason for living;and his sleep, through which he recovers to be ready once more for work and leisure. This, of course, is an oversimplification of life? but it is an indication of the broad components that make it up. Within each of these, however, there are many lesser components.

The work of a large majority of our employed population is relatively dull, and of-ten frustrating. In addition?the work of a large percentage of our population is pre-scribed by an authority who says, <

Although there is considerable disagreement among scientists about the activity that takes place during sleep, there seems to be good evidence that man is not conscious of his actions while he is asleep. This means that another part of daily living is not directed by the individual, except in the degree that it is directed through subconscious or uncon-scious thought. This, therefore, leaves leisure as that component of daily living in which man has the opportunity to make choices about his activity. Since he has the op-portunity for choice?man may follow either a constructive or a destructive path. There are many ways in which man shapes his leisure?that is? the time when he is not working or sleeping.

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

M a n y young people want to become pop-stars. I t i s their great ambition of l i f e.

T h e y think:pop-stars earn a lot of m o n e y;they lead interesting and exciting lives? thousands of fans admire them; they become famous...!

Yes, but first they must become stars. Most stars start l i f e with a group. But there are m a n y groups and the competition i s hard. Groups appear and disappear almost over-night. Only a small nu m b e r survive. Almost without exception they have to work very hard before they reach the top.

A n d very few reach the top and stay there. In England there are perhaps thirty or so groups at the top. Most of these do not earn so m u c h m o n e y:perhaps 500 pounds each time they perform. W h a t’s more, they have quite a lot of expenses. They have to pay a manager, for example. H e i s the key person in their lives and he takes about 20%

of their earnings — perhaps more. T h e n there are their clothes, their instruments and their van.

A n d don*t forget, they have to travel a great deal—sometimes 2,000 miles in one week. At times they even sleep in their van instead of a hotel? just to save money.

Passage

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

Computers may one day turn night into da文一;with good old, natural sunlight.

Colossal computer-controlled mirrors, thousands of feet across, may one day orbit the earth, reflecting sunlight onto a darkened United States.

Some Scientists say that 16 of these mirrors>each about a half mile across, could aim their reflected light at one area on the earth that was about 200 miles by 300 miles. That much light would equal about 56 moons.

The mirrors would be so high that they could catch the sun’s light as it was shining on the other side of the earth. The mirrors could orbit-thousands of miles high — at the same speed as the earth turns on. its axis (轴)..That way,the mirrors would always be over the same spot.

The aluminum-coated (涂招的).,plastic mirrors could be folded up and packed into a spaceship, according to the scientists. Once released a few hundred miles in space* the mirrors, powered by a solar-powered engine, could make the rest of the trip into space on their own.

The scientists say that the computer-controlled mirrors could also be made to tilt (倾斜)slow ly,so the reflected sunlight would sweep slowly along the surface of the earth. For example, as night fell? the mirrors could be tilt to light up Boston. Later on, as darkness spread slowly westward. Chicago* for example, then San Francisco could be lit up. The reflected sunlight would allow these cities to save up electricity. And in e-mergencies,such as power-failures,the mirrors could light up the affected area.'

Passage 1 Advertisement can be thought of “as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services.” Advertisement aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. However, if large-scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them. 1. Advertisement is often used to _______. A. deceive customers B. increase production C. arouse suspicion D. push the sale 2. The word “media ” (in the first paragraph) includes_______ A. the press B. television C. radio D. all of the above 3.
