第二部分阅读(共两节,满分45分)

第一节阅读理解(共10小题,每小题3分,满分30分)

阅读下列四篇短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Body language includes any movement of any part of the body. Like verbal(言语的)language, there exist(存在)cultural universals(统一性)and cultural differences in Chinese and American body languages. For example, a handshake is the most common gesture that goes with a greeting; waving a hand to say “goodbye”is the same; a frown (皱眉) shows displeasure and a pat on the back of a person indicates agreement, praise and encouragement.

Not all body language means the same thing in different cultures. Body motions

(手势;动机)and gestures are learned, that is, culturally determined. There is no natural language of emotional gesture, and our gesture language which is meaningful to us is as unintelligible to another culture as our verbal language is. Even nodding or shaking the head may have a different meaning. Look at the following English sentence, “Mama pursed(撅起)her lips and reminded us gently, …We do not want to go to the bank.? We all shook our heads.” Here the English “We all shook our heads” indicates that “We all agreed with Mama”.

Americans are ready to maintain good eye contact in conversation, but they do not like long stares. With people who are unfamiliar to us, we must avoid staring at them, and yet we must also avoid ignoring them. We look at them long enough to make it quite clear that we see them, and then we immediately look away. In face-to-face communication, a detailed knowledge of the counterpart?s body language can help us know more than just what he says. A person can use words to hide the truth, but the unconscious nonverbal body language may betray (背叛) him. For example, during the days of Nazism, the Jews(犹太人)within the boundaries of Germany did their best to hide their race, but they were often discovered by the Nazis (纳粹分子)because of their bold(勇敢的;明显的)and unrestrained (无节制的) gestures. So their body language frequently revealed(泄露)their race.

Having divorced (离婚) my dad, my mom had to move frequently in order to

find a job that would provide her with enough money to support the big family. For three years, we lived in the town of Parkersburg. On the first Christmas there, my brothers and I had been well prepared for a holiday without presents. But we had a surprise on Christmas Eve(圣诞夜前夕).

At midnight, we were woken up by someone shouting at our front door, “Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas !” We jumped up and ran to the door to find no one there, but several boxes and bags! Not only were there gifts, which were our favorite, but there were also clothes and food. Each of us kids, as well as Mom, had gifts with our names on them. And the clothes all fit us!

Another year went by and on Christmas Eve, we again got boxes and bags full of goodies. The next year we moved. We were in the same town but across the other side. Mom was beginning to get on her feet. Since we had moved and Mom had a better job, we were quite certain that “Santa” (圣诞老人)wouldn?t visit us that year. But we were wrong!

Those “Santa” visits restored in me the belief in the goodness of mankind, though to this day we don?t know who our helper was.

When we grew up, Mom moved to Virginia. She had some extra money one Christmas. She sent it to me and let us know her decision. We then took action. My husband and children had so much fun buying and wrapping presents for the needy family we had chosen. On Christmas Eve, we allowed the excited kids to stay up late to b e part of our secret “Santa” project.

Such satisfaction there was in being able to pass on the gift of love to others who needed it. And the gift goes on!
