Scientists have linked the ―fat gene‖ with the ―happy gene‖. They believed there could be genetic evidence which explains why fat people are often happier than their skinny friends. The breakthrough could be an explanation for why fat characters, such as The Laughing Policeman and Father Christmas are often portrayed as joyful and kindly.
FTO is the major genetic contributor to obesity. But it is also associated with an eight percent reduction in the risk of depression. Researchers at McMaster University in Canada had been investigating whether there was a link between obesity and depression. They found the opposite was true.
The study analyzed 17,200 DNA samples from participants in 21 countries. Results showed people with FTO gene—the fat gene—showed significantly less signs of depression. This finding was confirmed by analyzing in three additional international studies.
Professor David Meyre said, ― We set out to follow a different path, starting from the assumption that both depression and obesity deal with brain activity. We thought that obesity genes may be linked to depression. The difference of eight percent is not very obvious. But, we have discovered a molecular（分子的）basis for depression. It is the first evidence that an FTO obesity gene is associated with protection against major depression.
In a recent interview, actress Lisa Riley said she was more than comfortable with her size. I am a thirty-year-old Asian woman and I work in my family’s furniture business in Mombasa, Kenya. I have a disability caused by a spinal(脊柱的) injury.
I started school at the age of three but my physical activity was severely limited due to the nature of my disability. The word pity and the puzzle-horror look on people’s faces as they stare at me have been my life’s companion since those early days.
I had always dreamt of becoming a lawyer but I had to give up further education due to my health condition. But I still wanted to see whether there was some life out there beyond the narrow limits of my local community. Somehow I always hoped, still, I could find a means to overcome this limitedness.
However, I am very fortunate to have a positive family. They have also faced challenges having a disabled member in the family, but they have never made me feel different or treated me differently.
Having personally experienced a lot of discrimination, I decided that it was time to create awareness about disability in my community. I went to work at the Rotaract Club, an organization that assists the poor in society. However, I noticed that it runs on an easy charity model—food, clothes, sometimes cash. Even though this approach serves immediate needs, I knew that we needed to and could do more.
Being the only disabled member in the club made it difficult to express my views. So, as soon as I retired from the Rotaract Club I produced Dear Diary. It is a play which is based on my real life experiences as well as those with similar experiences. I insist that the Asian community need to look deeply into its beliefs towards persons with disabilities and establish structures of social support for them. Someone must teach them that an individual’s inner self is even precious.

China is becoming more and more popular as a tourist destination. When it first re-opened to ordinary foreigners in the early 1980s, it was really a place for the adventurous at heart. Organized tours usually include local guides at sites so that you get a good knowledge of the site and all that is relevant. In a group you will have various levels of support. Your tour guide and group will be on hand to help with day-to-day issues and there should be some form of organization to deal with major issues. You should be provided with a number to call in emergencies.
However, there are also some disadvantages. Tour packages have a set itinerary and by following this your freedom is restricted to some extent. You may feel that there isn’t enough time at some sites. Since travel companies aim to make a profit then you can be sure that the prices they charge are higher than if you make the arrangements yourself. The question is, are you willing to pay that for the convenience?
Tour packages suit many people but not all. Only when you know how much you
