She was born in 1753, in West Africa and brought to New England in 1761, where John Wheatley of Boston purchased her as a gift for his wife. Although they brought her into the household as a slave, the Wheatleys took a great interest in Phillis's education. Wheatley learned to read and write English by the age of nine, and she became familiar with Latin, Greek, the Bible, and selected classics at an early age. She began writing poetry at thirteen, modeling her work on the English poets of the time, particularly John Milton, Thomas Gray, and Alexander Pope. Her poem On the Death of the Rev. Mr. George Whitefield earned Wheatley national acclaim (称赞).In 1771, Wheatley went on a trip to London. She was well received in London. In 1773, thirty-nine of her poems were published in London as Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. The book includes many elegies (挽歌) as well as poems on Christian themes; it also includes poems dealing with race, such as On Being Brought from Africa to America. After Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley died, Phillis was left to support herself as a poet. It is unclear when Wheatley was freed from slavery, although scholars suggest it occurred between 1774 and 1778. In 1776, Wheatley wrote a letter and poem in support of George Washington; he replied with an invitation to visit him in Cambridge, stating that he would be “happy to see a person so favored by the Muses.” Because of the war and the poor economy, Wheatley experienced difficulty publishing her poems. She begged subscribers for a new volume (卷) that would include thirty-three new poems and thirteen letters, but was unable to raise the money. Phillis Wheatley, who had once been internationally celebrated, died alone onDecember 5, 1784. She was thirty-one years old. He had tried in the past to find information about his birth family but after many unsuccessful attempts, he decided to end his search. After Heninger's wife heard about a DNA test offered through , he took the test. Heninger, who lives in Gilbert, Arizona, said he wasn't thinking about finding his family; he just wanted to find out his ethnicity (种族渊源).AncestryDNA is a genealogy (家谱) testing service to help people discover a little bit more about their family story.“I thought that was a great thing,” Heninger said. “I know now where my biological ancestors originated from. I thought that was the end of it. I had no idea what would happen next.”When Heninger checked his Ancestry account in December 2015, he had received a message from someone whose DNA matched as “close family / first cousins”. That message was from Joyce Burgener from Spanish Fork, Utah.Burgener had taken the AncestryDNA test four years ago and in August 2015, she received a message through that she may have a possible first cousin match. She sent a message to Heninger and waited.Heninger sent an explanation that he didn't know anything about his biological family. Burgener offered to help him.As they continued the correspondence (通信), a memory came to Burgener's mind as she sought to understand what her connection to Heninger could be.“A strong impression came upon me and a vivid memory came into view,” Burgener said. “I immediately knew who Matt Heninger was —he was my brother.”When Burgener was 12 years old, her mother had another child, Heninger. Burgener was already one of five children and the family was living a very poor life, so their mother felt the situation required that she place the baby for adoption. Because the adoption details had been kept private, both Heninger and Burgener knew very little about the situation until they connected through AncestryDNA.“The best thing I looked forward to was meeting Joyce and giving her a hug. I feel my mom through her,” Heninger said. With the help of AncestryDNA, Heninger was able to meet his biological family for the first time.8. Why did Matt Heninger take the DNA test?A. Adopted man finds biological family through Ancestry DNADMost advertising in ancient times was word-of-mouth, that is, people liked something and told others about it. But even then, people advertised by putting inscriptions (题字) on walls, for example to display political slogans and to offer household goods for sale. Also, in Rome and Greece, in ancient times, it was common for people to use papyrus, a kind of paper, to advertise things they had lost or found. The tradition of wall or rock painting as a way of advertising goods is even more ancient.Painting developed in the 15th and 16th centuries, and this increased the forms of advertising. Handbills —small printed notices and advertisements —became common. Then, by the 17th century, advertisements started appearing in weekly newspapers in England. In the 19th century mail order catalogues appeared, promoting all kinds of goods. Finally, advertisements in the 1960s became more creative and more interesting. Also, they began to draw attention to the ‘unique selling points', the USPs of products. These are the qualities that make a product different from competitors' products. These days, advertisers have come up with new ways of promoting their products. For example, product placement is now common. This is advertising in TV programmes or films by having a character, preferably played by a famous actor, use a particular product. For example, Tom Cruise's character in the movie, Minority Report, had a computer with the Nokia logo (商标) on it, and his watch was clearly made by Bulgari.TV commercials are a very effective medium for advertisers, though these are very expensive. If an organisation wants to have a 30-second TV advert during the annual Superbowl game in the United States, they have to pay about $2.5 million.Perhaps the most interesting development is the use of famous personalities to endorse (代言) a product. The basketball player, Michael Jordan, endorsed Nike products and wore them while playing.Getting well-known personalities to endorse a product can be very expensive, but endorsements certainly increase a product's sales, especially if the personality has a positive image in the eyes of the public.12. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?A. The influence of advertising.B. The development of advertising.C. Ways of advertising in ancient times.D. Types of product advertising in ancient times.13. Which of the following is TRUE about advertisements in the 1960s?A. They were complicated and entertaining.B. They contained quite a lot of information.C. They were mainly shown in TV programmes.D. They focused on the special features of products.14. In product placement, advertisers tend to use .A. cartoon charactersB. intelligent peopleC. fictional charactersD. popular actors or actresses15. What is the benefit of endorsements?A. They are not expensive.B. They are fairly interesting.C. They promote product sales.D. They pass on positive messages.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Unit 5 Meeting your ancestors李仕才一、阅读理解。
Persuasion is to convince someone to agree with you, just like art which also calls for special techniques to accomplish. According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos.Ethos is a speaker’s way of convincing the audience that he is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education he has in the field. After all, you’re more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman.Pathos is a speaker’s way of connecting with an audience's emotions. For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible war. These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them want to vote for him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats to make the viewers feel pity, so they will be more likely to donate money.Logos is the use of facts, statistics or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying “believe me”.Although ethos, pathos and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. So, the next time you listen to a speech, watch a commercial or listen to a friend try to convince you to lend him some money, be on the lookout for these ancient Greek tools of persuasion.1.What is the purpose of persuasion?A. To advise somebody to support you.B. To help someone have special skillC. To convince somebody to realize his aim.D. To talk someone into being honest.2.What is a speaker’s way of convincing the audience to trust him?A. Pathos.B. Ethos.C. Logos.D. Education.3.What do a politician and an animal charity have in common?A. Both prevent themselves from being hurt.B. Both save people from terrible wars.C. Both make the audience support them.D. Both persuade people to donate money.4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Convince the AudienceB. Three Basic Tools of PersuasionC. Believe MeD.

Oracle Bone ScriptOracle bone script refers to the ancient Chinese characters found on animal bones or turtle shells used in divination(占卜) in Bronze Age China. The vast majority record is the divination by fire of the royal house of the late Shang Dynasty at the capital of Yin (modern Anyang,Henan Province).Because turtle shells as well as bones were used, the oracle bone script is also sometimes called shell and bone script. As the majority of oracle bones bearing writing date to the late Shang Dynasty, oracle bone script essentially refers to Shang script. It is certain that the writing of the Shang Dynasty experienced a period of development before the Anyang oracle bone script; however,no significant quantity of clearly identifiable writing before or during the early to middle Shang cultural period has been discovered. The oracle bone script of the late Shang appears pictographic(象形文字的),as does its contemporary, the Shang writing on bronzes. The earliest oracle bone script appears even more so than examples from late in the period paring oracle bone script to both Shang and early Western Zhou period writing on bronzes, oracle bone script is clearly greatly simplified;this is thought to be due to the difficulty of carving on the hard and bony surfaces. The more detailed and more pictorial(图片的,图画似的) style of the bronze graphs is thus thought to be more representative of typical Shang writing (as would have normally occurred on bamboo books) than the oracle bone script forms, and it is this typical style which continued to evolve into the Zhou period writing and then into the seal script of the Qin state in the late Zhou period.[阅读障碍词]1.Bronze Age青铜时代2.evolve v. 演化;演变[诱思导读]根据短文内容,判断正(T)误(F)1.The oracle bone script we say today mainly refers to Shang script. While any death causes misery, the death of a president is extremely painful as it affects the lives of millions. After the killing of Abraham Lincoln, the country was in a state of social disorder. On April 14th, 1865, actor John Wilkes Booth gathered his group together. Before they parted, Booth reminded them of their missions for the night: former Confederate prisoner of war Lewis Powell was to kill Secretary of State William Seward, George Azterodt was to shoot Vice President Andrew Johnson, and David Herold was to help the actor in his getaway. And Booth was to murder Lincoln. Booth had learned of Lincoln’s upcoming visit to Ford’s Theater to watch Our American Cousin only days before and was eager to murder Lincoln. In the past, Booth had thought about killing Lincoln. Booth considered Lincoln’s trip to the theater as the perfect opportunity to carry out his plan. That night, Lincoln and his wife Mary arrived merrily at Ford’s Theat er and were seated in a top balcony. During a very noisy part of the play, Booth slipped into the president’s box and fired a gun into the back of Lincoln’s head. Moments later, Booth jumped onto the stage and shouted, “Sic Semper Tyrannis,” the Virginia s tate motto meaning “Thus ever to tyrants (暴君)!”At first, the crowd thought the unfolding drama to be part of the production. However, upon hearing Mary’s shocking screams, the audience realized they had witnessed a violent action. Although Booth broke his leg in the fall, he managed to leave the theater and escape from Washington on horseback. Soon, Charles Leale, a 23-year-old doctor found the president in his chair, struggling to breathe. A few soldiers carried Lincoln to a house此卷只装订不密封 班级姓名准考证号考场号座位号across the street and placed him on a bed. When the surgeon general arrived at the house, he concluded that Lincoln could not be saved and would die during the night. Many reasons motivated Booth to assassinate the president. Most importantly, Booth opposed nearly all of Lincoln’s political views; he blamed Lincoln for the collapse of the Confederacy (美国南部邦联的瓦解) and the emancipation (解放) of slaves.11. David Herold’s mission was to .A. kill William SewardB. help Booth get awayC. shoot Andrew JohnsonD. murder Abraham Lincoln12. The audience knew something terrible had happened when .A. they heard Mary’s screamsB. they heard Booth’s wordsC. Booth fired at LincolnD. Booth jumped onto the stage13. On the night Lincoln was murdered, Booth .A. got away by carB. escaped uninjuredC. was killed in the theaterD. successfully left the theater14. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. How Booth was found.B. Booth’s political views.C. Why Booth hated Lincoln.D. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. In 1747,when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit .He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift.He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit. In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape (风景) painting. Wiliams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Wiliams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home .The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor studen t. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. We have a small number of paid staff, just twenty-three.Wikipedia content is free to use by anyone for any purpose. Our annual expenses are less than six million dollars. Wikipedia is run by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which I founded in 2003.Wikipedia is driven by a global community of more than 150,000 volunteers—all devoted to sharing knowledge freely. Over almost eight years, these volunteers have contributed more than 11 million articles in 265 languages. More than 275 million people come to our website every month to access information, free of charge and free of advertising. But Wikipedia is more than a website. We share a commoncause:Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That’s our commitment.Your donation helps us in several ways. Most importantly, you will help us cover the increasing cost of managing global traffic to one of the most popular websites on the Internet. Funds also help us improve the software that runs Wikipedia—making it easier to search, easier to read, and easier to write for. We are committed to increasing the free knowledge movement worldwide,by taking on new volunteer s,and building strategic partnerships with institutions of culture and learning.Wikipedia is different. It’s the largest encyclopedia (百科全书) in history, written by volunteers. Like a national park or a school,we don’t believe advertising should have a place in Wikipedia. Buried with him were the tools of a hunter or warrior. There was a bone pin that may have been from a piece of clothing such as a leather coat. He carried a copper knife on his breast. The most amazing find was two gold earrings. That would have made him a man of distinction. Only a few centimeters from his head were two pots made of clay, tools and materials to make arrows, a bow and a dozen arrows for hunting and a second, smaller copper knife. Next to them lay a cushion stone, upon which the man could work metal. His grave is the richest of any found from that period, because this man was buried with two gold earrings which arethe oldest gold ever found in Britain (dated to 2470 BC). Besides, he was buried three miles from Stonehenge. Archaeologists tend to believe he was a member of a powerful class who might have organized the construction of Stonehenge.Stonehenge was begun around 3000 BC. In about 2300 BC the huge stone circles were built. The biggest stone weighed approximately 20 tons. But the smaller blue stones, still weighing 4 tons on average, came from west Wales. It is not yet known how these were conveyed over a distance of 380 km. It is also a mystery how early man was able to construct Stonehenge without the use of modern construction machines and lorries. He is an example of people who brought culture and new techniques from the European mainland to Britain. In terms of technical development people were going from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age and then to the Iron Age.51. Which are not included in the things that are found in the grave of a man'?A. All of the above.54. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?A. How Stonehenge was built.B. Building Stonehenge was hard.C. Stonehenge was made of big stones.D. Professor Xu, what are the most important dangers to our archaeological treasures?X: They get damaged or lost. It's a matter of education. People fail to take the right steps when something is found. Fortunately, the government has helped spreading the basic knowledge among the population, telling what is to be done when an archaeological find is made.J: What does that knowledge consist of ?X: Well, when something is found, construction work must be stopped and the police should be told about the find. That is to make sure that no further damage will be done.J: Does it still happen that people do not report things they find?X: Yes, indeed. They doubt whether it is necessary to do so. It sometimes happens that a find is not very valuable. They areafraid that they would make scientists come for nothing.J: Are there other reasons why people don't report their finds?X: Oh, yes. People are afraid that archaeologists may take a real interest in the site and spend many weeks or months digging around at it. That would result in farmers missing the right opportunity to plant crops or construction work to be stopped for a long time. They don't realize that they should not weigh their own business interests against our national history.J: If it is so important to dig things up and collect them, then why are archaeologists worried that other people dig up artifacts and give them to museums or add them to their own private archaeological collections?X: Archaeology is a professional discipline. Years of training and experience are needed. It is not just about finding things and digging them up. The field work must be done very carefully. Of every find there needs to be a written record, to which a photograph must be added. The records must also state exactly what was found, where it was found and when. The outdoor work is followed by work in the lab, cleaning, restoring and identifying each artifact. Finally, when all is done, an analysis must be written and published in a magazine or a book.J: Are there any other dangers, natural disasters perhaps?X: Unfortunately there are treasure hunters: people search for valuable objects, especially jewellery and gold. They are the worst. History does not need to fear nature very much. What has been buried has often been buried well. It is often human digging that causes the loss of valuable materials. It may seem a contradiction, but leaving things as they are would often be the best way of keeping things for the generations to come.56. The interview is probably a conversation betweenA.
