AIt’s 5:00 in the morning when the alarm (闹钟) rings in my ears. I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run,but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD,Insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I face my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise,I feel extremely tired, but a smile is of my face. It’s a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work,or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my ―no thank you,‖ or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years,I have learned it’s okay to just say ―no.‖ I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat.So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self –confidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It’s through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.21. Why is there a smile on the author’s face in the morning?A. Because she sees her family sleeping peacefully.B. Because she feels a sense of achievement.C. Because she enjoys the interesting DVD. D. Because she finishes her favorite exercise.22. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2 ?A. Others don’t understand what she dose.B. She likes to make others surprised.C. She doesn’t like others politely.D. Others try to help her by offering her food.23. What does the underlined word ―commitment‖ in the last paragraph mean?A. Good healthB. A regular habitC. A strong powerD. Firm belief24. What can we learn about the author from the text?A. She aims to develop a good body shape.B. She wants to look different from others.C. She acts in a strange way.D. Today it has become almost as important to every family as food and water! This year, the World Wide Web has turned 25 years old. What many people don’t know is that the web was at first created to improve communication between thousands of scientists in Switzerland. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee was a 34-year-old British physicist working as a software(软件)engineer at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Researchin Switzerland. Since CERE was a huge organization with thousands of scientists, communication between them was becoming increasingly difficult.Berners-Lee wanted to develop a system to solve the problem. His paper suggestedan information system, where a page on one computer could have a link to another page on another computer ( connected through the Internet) allowing scientists to read lots of information quickly. However, Berners-Lee’s boss said that it sounded exciting but impossible.Even though there were many difficulties and few supporters, Berners-Lee wenton to develop the World Wide Web. He came up with ideas such as Hyper-text Transfer Protocol(超文本传输协议)to allow computers to talk to each other, Hyper-text Markup Language (HTML) to create the pages, a server to serve the pages, and a browser (浏览器)to see them.In December 1990, the World Wide Web was demonstrated(展示)and in 1991, the WWW project was made public, so that other programmers could develop their own browsers. Berners-Lee believed that it could be used for more than scientific purposes. He wanted the Internet to be easy for anyone to use-a free open software. His wishes soon came true.Although the World Wide Web has today turned into a completely different thing from what it meant at first, it has become necessary and important to our lives, powering our mobile technologies and the way we get information.56. World Wide Web turns 25!C. Tips on improving your websiteD. Interview with Tim Berners-LeeBIt’s not easy being a teenager—nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him, if he should seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’s privacy(隐私). Never read his mail or listen to his personal conversations.Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.61. The main purpose of the text is to tell parents ________.A. how to get along with a teenagerB. how to respect a teenagerC. how to understand a teenagerD. how to help a teenager grow up62. What does the phrase “clam up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. Become excited.B. Show respect.C. Refuse to talk.D. Seek help.63. What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text?A. Not allow him to learn driving or take drugs.B. Give him advice only when necessary.C. Let him have his own telephone.D. Not talk about personal things with him.64. Why do the parents require their child talk for 15 minutes only on the family’s telephone?A. To teach the teenager moderation.B. To save money.C. To help the teenager spend more time on study.D. It’s unnecessary to give your child the space he needs to grow.C. Not expect a lot from your child, but everything.D. And three holidays... ”Julia was biting her finger nail nervously, her face red, but--- not a word.“Three holidays, therefore take off twelve dollars. Four days Tom was sick and there were no lessons, as you were occupied only with Dick. Three days you had a toothache and my wife gave you permission not to work after lunch. Twelve and seven - nineteen. Take nineteen off ... that leaves. hmm.... forty one dollars. Correct?”Julia‟s left eye reddene d with tears welling up. Her chin trembled; she coughed nervously and blew her nose, but --- still not a word.“Around New Year‟s Day you broke a teacup and a saucer; take off two dollars. The cup cost more, it was a treasure of the family, but--- forget it. When didn‟t I take a loss! Then, due to your neglect (疏忽), Tom climbed a tree and tore his jacket; take away ten. Cellphone use is usually forbidden in class. But using the high-pitched (频率)ring tone, students can successfully exchange phone messages without being found by their teachers. The technology relies on the fact that most adults gradually lose the ability to hear high-pitched sounds, It was developed in Britain but has recently spread to America by the Internet. However, the technology was originally aimed at annoying teenagers, not the other way around.Called the Mosquito,it was marketed last year by a Welsh security company. That was the first photograph. The next important date in the history of photography was 1837. That year, Daguerre, another French, took a picture of his studio. He used a new kind of camera and a different process. In his pictures, you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest details. This kind of photograph was called a daguerreotype.Soon, other people began to use Daguerre‟s process. Travelers brought back daguerreotypes from all around the world. People photographed famous buildings, cities and mountains. In about 1840, the process was improved. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. The process was not simple. The photographers had to carry lots of films and processing equipment. But this did not stop the photographers, especially in the United States. After 1840s daguerreotype artists were popular in most cities.Mathew Brady was a well - known American photographer. He took many pictures of famous people. The pictures were unusual because they were very life - like and full of personality.Brady was also the first person to take pictures of war. His 1862 Civil War pictures showed dead soldiers and ruined cities. They made the war seem more real and more terrible. In the 1880s, new inventions began to change photography---Photographers could buy films ready-made in rolls(卷). So they did not have to make the film themselves. Also, they did not have to process the film immediately. They could bring it back to their studios and develop it later meaning that they did not have to carry lotsof equipment. And finally, the invention of the small handheld camera made photography less expensive. With the small camera, anyone could be a photographer. People began to use cameras just for fun. They took pictures of their families, friends and favorite places. They called these pictures“ snapshot”.Photographs became very popular in newspapers in the 1890s. Soon magazines and books also used documentary photographs. These pictures showed true events and people. They were much more real than drawing.Photography also turned into a form of art by the end of the 19th century. Some photographs were not just copies of the real world.
