课时练1阅读理解提速练Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·云南高三调研)For the growing number of Chinese heading west to work and study, there’s plenty they find surprising. Upon arrival in the West, many Chinese find they have to firstly put on the brakes. Li Feng, raised in northern China and now based in England, agrees.“The only thing Chinese people would be shocked by in Britain is how long it takes to do things,”he says.“For instance, in China if you want to open a bank account, you don’t wait and you just do it at the counter.” Out-of-hours and weekend work is standard in China, but in Britain, the weekend is for family and friends.Chen Lei, who left his homeland 12 years ago and is now a lawyer in Belgium says office politics are simpler in Europe, partly because the hierarchy(等级制度) is less rigid than in China, where the boss really is the boss and social class in the office is very obvious and important. As a result, staff in a Chinese company think very carefully about how to present their views and ideas. Employees in the West can share their opinions more freely. In China you should have the wisdom to say something in an appropriate way. But in Europe you can just say what you want. The newest Chinese arrivals have a very different view to previous generations, according to Sharon Jin, who moved to the U.S. 20 years ago and is now an American citizen. “Almost 100% of people of my generation who came to the States want to get a green card,”she says. “But today younger Chinese plan to work for 10 years here and then return to China to buy a house or look a fter their parents.” While a record number of 523,700 students left China to study elsewhere in 2015, roughly 70%-80% of students abroad have been returning in recent years because of the attractive job market at home, according to the Chinese Ministry of Education (CME).【解题导语】以前,中国人去国外都想获得绿卡,而现在他们计划在国外工作十年以后,再回来买房或照顾父母。

Mr Finch expected to have a quiet life, but in the summer holidays he got a shock. Hundreds of people came to the village. Mr Finch's house was the most interesting building in the village and many people came to see it. From morning till night there were visitors outside the house. They kept looking through windows and many of them even went into Mr Finch's garden. This was too much for Mr Finch. He decided to drive the visitors away. So he put a notice in the window. The notice said: If you want to satisfy your curiosity, come in and look around. Price:two shillings and six pence. Mr Finch was sure that visitors would stop coming, but he was wrong. More and more visitors came and Mr Finch spent every day showing them round his house. “I came here to retire, not to work as a guide.” He said angrily. In the end,he sold the house and bought a small, modern one. It is an uninteresting little place and no one wants to see it. But he could live a quiet life.第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑.A(2015·黑龙江哈三中三模) Two new studies suggest that modern running shoes could increase the risk of injuries to runners. One study involved sixty-eight healthy young women and men who ran at least twenty-four kilometers a week. The runners were observed on a treadmill machine (跑步机). Sometimes theywore running shoes. Other times they ran barefoot (赤脚).Researchers from the JKM Technologies Company in Virginia, the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado did the study. They found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. They observed that the effect was even greater than the effect reported earlier for walking in high heels. The study appeared in the official scientific journal of The American Academy of Physical Medicine. The other study appeared in the journal Nature. It compared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers were from Harvard University in Massachusetts, Moi University in Kenya and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. They divided the runners into three groups. One group had always run shoeless. Another group bad always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running.Runners who wear shoes usually come down their heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found that barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of their foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heel.Harvard's Daniel Lieberman led the study. He says the way most running shoes are designed may explain why those who wear them land on their heel. The heel of the shoe is bigger and heavier than other parts of the shoe, so it would seem more likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings. But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to feel if you get injured. The study was partly supported by Vibrato, which makes a kind of footwear that it says is like running barefoot. The findings have gotten a lot of attention. But the researchers say there are many problems in the way the press has reported in their paper. So they have tried to explain their findings on a Harvard Website.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文.一项新的研究表明,穿着跑鞋跑步其实对身体并不好,赤脚跑步反而可以在一定程度上避免奔跑带来的损伤.21.What's the main idea of the passage?A.Walking in high heels could cause less serious effects than running barefoot.B.Two new discoveries encourage people to run in high heels.C.Running in shoes is partly good to runners.D.Two new studies prove running without shoes is less risky to runners in most cases.答案:D主旨大意题.第一段“Two new studies suggest that modern runing shoes could increase the risk of injuries to runners.”点出了文章的主题:穿跑鞋跑步会增加受伤的风险.在下文的试验中多次提到赤脚跑步的损伤较小.由此可推断本文的主旨大意是赤脚跑步对运动员来说风险较小.故选D项.22.Which part of our body could be injured if we run in running shoes?A.Toes.B.Hips.C.Feet. In African countries, the WHO says the number of over-weight or obese children is twice as high as it was 20 years ago. Around the world, about 43 million children under the age of five were over-weight in 2013.Overweight or obese children are more likely to become overweight and obese adults. The condition can generate serious health problems like heart diseases.Francesco Branca is the director of the WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and Development. He says urban lifestyle makes people eat processed food more often, which has a high sugar, fat and salt content. He also says people are gaining weight because of their lack of activities. They travel in cars or other vehicles more than on foot. The WHO experts say to lower obesity rates is especially complex in countries that also deal with high rates of infectious (感染性的) diseases. The WHO has some basic solutions for individuals and countries. The organization says you should lower your intake of fat, sugar, salt and processed food and eat more fruits, vegetables and increase physical activity. The WHO says these actions are especially important for children. And WHO expert Branea says mothers should breastfeed their babies for at least the first six months of life, if possible. More importantly, governments should consider providing vitamins for children and educational campaigns about problems linked to obesity would also help. In his view, government policies should deal with how food is marketed to children and food producers must balance quality and taste with the dangers of sugar fat and salt. “Reducing the number ofover-weight children will not be easy. The goal is difficult to meet even in wealthy countries.” he adds.语篇解读:文章介绍在发展中国家过度肥胖的孩子数量在增加,这会使他们在以后的生活中产生很多问题,文章提出了导致这些问题的原因和解决措施.28.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?A.Children in developing countries generally weigh too much.B.Overweight children in developing countries have increased greatly.C.The number of overweight children in the world has doubled.D.The World Health Organization has increased greatly.答案:B主旨大意题.根据第一段第一句可知,本段主要讲述在发展中国家过度肥胖的孩子的数量在增加,选B.29.According to Branca, people are becoming overweight because of their changes in ________.A.lifestyles B.transportationC.physical condition D.school educational答案:A细节理解题.根据文章第三段的两句可知,人们变胖是因为生活方式的改变,选A.30.Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word in Paragraph 2?A.cure B.preventC.worsen D.cause答案:D词义猜测题.根据第二段中“The condition can generate serious health problems like heart diseases.(这种情况会导致严重的像心脏病这样的问题)”可知,generate是“导致”的意思,选D.31.According to WHO,which of the following is TRUE?A.Poor nutrition is often related to children obesity.B.To lower infectious disease rates is more complex than to lower obesity rates.C.Eating less sugar and more vegetables helps lower obesity rates.D.Increasing physical activity is most effective to lower obesity rates.答案:C细节理解题.根据文章的第五段的内容可知,少吃糖、多吃蔬菜可以降低肥胖的几率,选C.D(2015·山东莱芜1月摸底考试) On the high-speed train Avignon to Paris, my husband and I landed in the only remaining seats on the train in the middle of a car, directly opposite a Frenchwoman of middle years. It was an extremely uncomfortable arrangement to be looking straight into the eyes of a stranger. My husbandand I pulled out books. The woman produced a large makeup case and made up her face. Except for a lunch break, she continued this activity for the entire three-hour trip. Every once in a while she surveyed the car with a bright-eyed glance, but never once did she catch my eye. My husband and I could have been a blanket wall.I was amused, but some people would have felt uncomfortable, even repulsed (厌恶的). There is something about making up in public that calls up strong emotional reactions. Partly it's a question of hygiene. And it's a matter of degree. Making up—a private act—has a way of neglecting the presence of others. I was once seated at a party with a model-actress who immediately waved a silly brush and began dusting her face at the table, demonstrating that while she was next to me,she was not with me.In fact, I am generally prohibited from making up in public, except when I am in the company of cosmetics moment. In a gathering more professional than social, I would do so.Kathy Peiss, a history professor at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst says that nose-powdering in the office was an occasion for outrage in 1920's and 30's. Deploring (强烈反对) the practice as a waste of company time, trade journals advises managers to discourage it among workers. Peiss theorizes that it was female's making up in what has been an all-male field that disturb some gentlemen.Peiss tells me that after the 30's, pulling out a make-up case was no longer an issue. It became an accepted practice. I asked if she feels free to apply lipstick at a professional lunch herself. Sounding mildly shocked, she says she would save that for the privacy of her car afterward. Why? Because it would be “a gesture of inappropriate feminity(女性化).”One guess is that most professional women feel this way. There is evidence of the popularity of the new lipsticks that remain in place all day without retouching.语篇解读:文章是一篇议论文,作者阐述了在公共场合化妆的弊端.32.According to the author,“My husband and I could have been a blanket wall.” in the first paragraph most probably means“________”.A.We were of no existence in the French woman's eyes.B.We looked at the French woman expressionlessly.C.We were treated with an expressionless face.D.We used books as a wall to avoid the woman's eyes.答案:A词义猜测题.作者和丈夫就坐在这位法国妇女的前面,虽然作者和丈夫一直看着这位法国妇女,但是这位妇女却毫不在意,因此这里是说这位法国妇女无视他们的存在.33.In the author's opinion, she ________.A.feels comfortable when making up in publicB.makes up before any professional gatheringsC.only makes up on social occasionsD.allows public making up on certain occasions答案:D细节理解题.根据文章第三段的“...except when I am in the company of cosmetics moment. In a gathering more professional than social,I would do so”可知,只有在特定的场合,作者才能接受公共场合化妆,答案D项正确.34.According to Peiss, nose-powdering in an office was criticized mainly for the reason that ________.A.normal office work was disturbedB.make dominance was emphasized thereC.it discouraged women's interest in careerD.it distracted make workers' focus on work答案:B细节理解题.根据文章第四段的“...was an occasion for outrage in 1920's and 30's”可知,答案B项正确.35.It can be inferred that in a highly open society, the differences between men and women ________.A.have attracted little attentionB.hinder the social developmentC.still call for great concernD.are attractive topics in talk shows答案:C推理判断题. Easy Exercises to Do on VacationYou've waited for long, and now here is your vacation. The trouble is:you've been sticking to a fitness program and are worried that all your good work will be destroyed by the desire to eat local food and lazing around on beach chairs.__36__ Schedule 20 to 30 minutes a day,and make use of your hotel room, the grounds and surrounding neighborhood to perform quick and easy exercises while you're on vacation.Stair ExercisesYour hotel can serve as a gym even if it doesn't have e the stairs to exercise while you're on vacation. If your hotel is a highrise, start at the bottom and climb as many floors as you can before using the elevator.__37__WalkTaking a fast walk for 20 to 30 minutes gives you a great way of doing exercise.__38__ In aremote or seaside location, stay on the hotel grounds and walk around the buildings.Always let someone know where you are before you set out.Yoga(瑜伽)Don't want to pack a large, heavy yoga mat on vacation? You can still do yoga.__39__ Then you can perform stretches on carpeted or hardwood floors. If you don't have time to get these accessories, just perform a series of Half Sun Salutations as soon as you wake up.__40__ Just stand tall with your feet together and your arms by your sides.Breathe in and raise your arms to the sky.Breathe out and bend forward from your waist and lay your hands on your ankles.Breathe in and come halfway up with a flat back.Breathe out and fall forward again, and then breathe in and rise all the way up to your original position.A.If your hotel has a balcony, even better.B.Never go out before telling someone about it.C.You don't have to overlook your yoga while on vacation.D.This is where a little intelligence and discipline should come in.E.If you're in an area that's populated, stick to the main streets.F.Get yourself a pair of gloves and socks with a non-slip coating(涂层).G.If you choose to go downstairs on foot, make sure you hold on to the rail for support.答案:36~40DGEFA第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面的短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.(2015·江苏扬州质检) Even though Danish students have equal access to education, their choice of studies is still influenced by social class. Ⅰ阅读理解(2018·成都高三诊断性检测)Johannes Vermeer is such a quiet and introspective(内省的)artist that it took hundreds of years for anyone to notice he was a genius.A major Vermeer exhibition opens this month at the Louvre in Paris, whose permanent collection includes his great painting of a woman absorbed in close, visually demanding work, The Lacemaker (about 1669-1670). Like other paintings by Vermeer, this image represents modern culture. So attracted are today’s art lovers by Vermeer that it was thought shocking when a recent survey found that 82% of Americans can’t name who painted Girl w ith a Pearl Earring. Well, maybe they don’t go to the movies much.It is not true to say he was forgotten—that would suggest he was famous in his lifetime. He was not. Vermeer was one more painter among the many who worked for money in the Dutch Republic in the 17th century. He was not a star like Rembrandt. He obviously took himself and his art seriously. His self-referential painting The Art of Painting proves that. Even though he worked all his life in Delft, he painted only 35 known works and left his family poor when he died in 1675 at the age of 43.It is fitting that Paris is celebrating Vermeer, because it was the French avantgarde(先锋派) in the 19th century who saved him from being completely forgotten. Compare his painting Woman in Blue Reading a Letter or The Little Street with, say, Edouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère(1882)or Camille Pissarro’s The Boule v ard Montmartre at Night(1897) and it is easy to see why the art of Vermeer found its natural audience in Parisian Bohemia. All these artists are likely to have known about and admired Vermeer due to the efforts of the critic ThoréBürger, a veteran of the 1848 Revolution.Vermeer’s rediscovery is part of the history of modern French art. Vermeer is not only a great artist. He is a great modern artist.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了著名画家Johannes Vermeer的生平和他的艺术特点。

His devotion was rewarded, for, in turning a page, her book slipped from her fingers. The young man ran upon it immediately, returning it to its owner. The girl looked him over leisurely at his ordinary, neat dress. “You may sit down, if you like,”she said, in a deliberate contralto(女低音).“Do you know,”he said, “that you are the most charming girl I have ever seen? I had my eye on you yesterday. Didn’t know somebody was obsessed by those pretty lamps of yours, did you, honeysuckle?”“Whoever you are,”said the girl, in icy tones, “you must remember that I am a lady. I will excuse the remark you have just made because the mistake was, doubtless, not an unnatural one—in your circle.”“I seriously beg your pardon,”said the young man. His expression of satisfaction had changed to regret and shame.“Abandon the subject, if you please. Now, tell me about these people passing and crowding. Where are they going? Why do they so hurry? Are they happy?”The young man had promptly abandoned his air of coquetry(嬉皮笑脸). “It is interesting to watch them,”he replied, “It is the wonderful drama of life. One wonders what their histories are.”“I do not,”said the girl, “I am not so curious about others’stories. I come here to sit because here, only, I can be near the great, common, beating heart of humanity. Can you guess why I spoke to you?”The girl, held up a slender finger, and smiled slightly. “Because I wanted to talk, for once, with a natural man—one unspoiled by the dirty gloss of wealth. Oh! You do not know how tired I am of it—money, money, money! I am sick of jewels, of travel, of society, of luxuries,of all kinds.Sometimes the very tinkle of the ice in my champagne glass nearly drives me mad.”“I have always liked to read and hear about the ways of wealthy and fashionable folks. Now, I had formed the opinion that champagne is cooled in the bottle and not by placing ice in the glass,”The young man said. The girl gave a musical laugh of genuine amusement. “You should know,”she explained, “that just now it is a fad to put ice in champagne. The idea was originated by a visiting Prince of Tartary wh ile dining at the Waldorf.”“I see,”admitted the young man, humbly.“Sometimes,”continued the girl, “I have thought that if I ever should love a man, it would be one of lowly station. One who is a worker and not a lazy bone. By the way, what is your occupation?”“A very humble one. Were you serious when you said that you could love a man of lowly position?”“Indeed I was.”“I work in a restaurant.”The girl shrank slightly and asked, “Not as a waiter? Labor is noble, though.”“I am not a wai ter. I am a cashier in that restaurant.”The girl consulted a tiny watch upon her left wrist, and rose, hurriedly. “Why are you not at work?”“I am on the night turn,”said the young man. “May I not hope to see you again?”“I do not know. Perhaps—but I must go quickly now. There is a dinner—and, oh! Perhaps you noticed an automobile at the upper corner of the park as you came. Pierre waits for me there. uncut food that your parents packed in your lunch box. That’s because biting into anything that requires the use of the front teeth, is likely to cause rude behavior in kids! At least that’s the conclusion some researchers from Cornell University have made, after observing the behavior of 12 students at a summer camp. The researchers began by dividing the students into two groups. On the first day, one group was given chicken on the bone. The other was provided with the same chicken cut into delicious, bite-size pieces so that the only way to eat it was with a fork. The following day, the food was exchanged, so that the first group received the small pieces and forks, while the second, enjoyed the chicken on the bone. Each day the camp counselors also gave the kids strict instructions to let them stay within a circle with a 9-foot radius. The researcher recorded both the meal time and then asked behavioral experts to evaluate what happened. They agreed that the kids that were required to bite the food were twice as likely to show aggressive behavior and disobey the adults, as those that focused on eating their food with forks. Of course, the latter also showed some rude behavior. If that isn’t bad enough, the former group was also more likely to leave their special circle and even, stand and jump on the picnic tables! This has made Mr. Wansink, who led the research and his team, conclude that for some reasons, kids that bite into their food are more likely to exhibit bad behavior than those forced to eat with forks. Therefore, he advises parents to cut up the food they serve to their kids to enjoy a peaceful meal!【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文.研究表明,孩子吃东西的方式可能会影响他们的行为举止.1.What probably results in kids’ bad behavior?A.The way kids bite into food.B.The way food is cooked.C.The unhealthy food kids eat.D.Their attitude toward the food.A解析:细节理解题.根据第一段第二句“That’s because biting into anything that requires the use of the front teeth, is likely to cause rude behavior in kids!”可知,孩子表现粗鲁和吃东西的方式有关.故选A.2.Paragraph 2 mainly shows ________.A.the result of the researchB.the time on the researchC.the way the research went onD.the difficulties the research facedC解析:段落大意题.根据第二段的内容可知,研究者做了一个实验,主要是为了研究孩子的粗鲁表现是否和吃东西的方式有关.在实验中孩子们被分成两组,然后在两天里分别用不同的方式吃东西.故本段主要写的是实验方式.故选C.3.What can we learn about the students at the summer camp?A.They enjoyed the food there very much.B.They exhibited different levels of rude behavior.C.They were asked to bite the food with care.D.They were likely to behave badly frequently.B解析:细节理解题.根据第三段第二句“They agreed that the kids that were required to bite the food were twice as likely to show aggressive behavior and disobey the adults, as those that focused on eating their food with forks.”可知,因吃饭方式的不同,两组孩子粗鲁的行为出现的次数明显不同.故选B.4.What does Mr. Wansink advise parents to do?A.To eat with their kids often.B.To teach their kids how to eat food.C.To serve their kids with small pieces of food.D.To show their kids good behavior often.C解析:细节理解题.根据最后一段最后一句“Therefore, he advises parents to cut up the food they serve to their kids to enjoy a peaceful meal!”可知,Wansink先生建议家长把孩子吃的食物切成小块.故选C.BIn its early history,Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streetsso muddy that people, horses and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went like this:A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street.Asked if he needs help,he replies,“No,thanks.I’ve got a good horse under me.”The city planner decided to build an underground drainage(排水) system, but there simply wasn’t enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city’s streets by as much as 12 feet. This of course created a new problem:dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago.Building owners were faced with a choice:either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into mainfloors,or hoist(吊起) the entire buildings to meet the new street level.Small woodframe buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like the Tremont Hotel, which was a sixstory brick building? That’s where George Pullman came in.He had developed some housemoving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel,Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews(螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building’s foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman’s sign each man turned his jackscrews by the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly.Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stayed open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn’t even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago’s early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago’s waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city’s next step was to clean the polluted river.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了芝加哥为了应对洪水泛滥的问题而实行了一些解决方案的故事.5.The author mentions the joke in Paragraph 1 to show________.A.horses were fairly useful in ChicagoB.Chicago’s streets were extremely muddyC.Chicago was very dangerous in the springD.the Chicago people were particularly humorousB解析:推理判断题.根据第一段第一句“In its early history,Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses and carts got stuck.”可推知,作者提及这个笑话是为了表明芝加哥的街道非常泥泞,故选B.6.The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to________.A.get rid of the street dirtB.lower the Chicago RiverC.fight against heavy floodsD.build the pipes above groundD解析:细节理解题.根据第三段第一句“An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt.”可知,Ellis Chesbrough 让城市规划者相信在地上建管道才能解决洪水泛滥所带来的问题,故选D.7.What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?A.It went on smoothly as intended.B.It interrupted the business of the hotel.C.It involved Pullman in turning ten jackscrews.D.It separated the building from its foundation.A解析:细节理解题.根据第五段内容可推知,用螺旋千斤顶把the Tremont Hotel升高的事项进展顺利,故选A.8.The passage is mainly about the early Chicago’s________.A.popular lifestyles and their influencesB.environmental disasters and their causesC.engineering problems and their solutionsD.successful businessmen and their achievementsC解析:主旨大意题.结合全文可知,本文主要讲的是早期芝加哥如何应对洪水泛滥的问题的故事,故选C.。
Ⅰ阅读理解AIn our everyday lives we meet situations in which we take many things for granted. We only treasure things when they are gone. This is a sad truth of human nature. One day, I found myself as a witness to a similar situation. One evening, I left work and boarded the train. After entering, I noticed something unusual. The center of the car had a few empty seats while both ends were crowded with people standing.I didn’t pay much attention and sat down on one of the empty seats. I sensed a funny smell. It wasn’t long before I noticed a homeless person sleeping on three seats in front of me. He was bleeding from his nose. Why wasn’t anyone helping him?His clothes were torn and he was giving off a strange smell. Along with the smell, his eyes were dull, watery, and red. Occasionally he scratched himself and people looked at him as if he had committed a crime. As the train stopped at stations and more people came in they covered their noses and faced away from him. All the seats around him were empty.Suddenly, he began to swear at the people around him. A plainclothes police officer who looked like a construction worker took out his certificate and showed it to the homeless man. The officer, not wanting to touch the homeless man, told him his rights and directed him to exit the train. As the officer walked the man out of the train, the homeless man turned around and said “MY HOME!” and started crying.A man doesn’t value things until they are gone. If he didn’t have a home, at least he had freedom. Now he has neither. No one wants to help someone who won’t help himself.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。
Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·浙江名校协作体高三模拟)“Her grades are fine; I’m not worried about that, but she just doesn’t seem to love learning any more,”Alice’s mum said. She’s absolutely right. I’d noticed the same thing about her daughter over the previous two or three years when I’d been Alice’s middle school English, Latin, and writing teacher, and I have an answer, right there on the tip of my tongue, to what has gone wrong. Yet I’m torn between my responsibility to help Alice and the knowledge that what I have to say is a truth I’m not sure this mother is ready to hear. The truth for this parent and so many others is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural curiosity and love of learning at the altar(圣坛) of achievement, and it’s our fault. Alice’s parents, her teachers, society at large—we are all supposed to be blamed in this crime against learning. From her first day of school, we pointed her toward that altar and trained her to measure her progress by means of points, scores, and awards. We taught Alice that her potential is tied to her intellect(智力), and that her intellect is more important than her character. We taught her to come home proudly bearing grade As, championship prizes, and college acceptance, and not on purpose, we taught her that we don’t really care how she obtains them. We taught her to protect her academic and extracurricular perfection at all costs and that it’s better to quit when things get challenging rather than risk losing that perfect record. Above all else, we taught her to fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning.【解题导语】本文通过Alice的例子说明了父母、老师和社会有时会扼杀孩子的好奇心和对学习的热爱。

There was once a lonely girl who longed so much for love. One day while she was walking in the woods she found two starving songbirds. She took them home and put them in a small cage, caring them with love. Luckily, the birds grew strong little by little. Every morning they greeted her with a wonderful song. The girl felt great love for the birds. One day the girl left the door to the cage open accidentally. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew from the cage. The girl was so frightened that he would fly away. So as he flew close, she grasped him wildly. Her heart felt glad at her success in capturing him. Suddenly, she felt the bird go weak, so she opened her hand and stared in horror at the dead bird. It was her desperate love that had killed him. She noticed the other bird moving back and forth on the edge of the cage. She could feel his strong desire—needing to fly into the clear, blue sky. Unwillingly, she lifted him from the cage and threw him softly into the air. The lucky bird circled once, twice, three times. The girl watched delightedly at the bird. Her heart was no longer concerned with her loss. What she wanted to see was that the bird could fly happily. Suddenly the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. 2019年高考英语阅读理解一轮练(2)ASome years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity. I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day's events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn't accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across.I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen...At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful.I take pictures, but not very often only of objects I find really beautiful.I'm no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.I don't want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won't have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I'll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don't live to make memories--I just live, and the memories form themselves.1.Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ________.A. observing her school routineB. expressing her satisfactionC. impressing her classmatesD. preserving her history2.What caused a change in the author's understanding of keeping a diary?A.A dull night on the journey.B. The beauty of the great valley.C.A striking quotation from a book.D. Her concerns for future generations.3.What does the author put in her diary now?A. Notes and beautiful pictures.B. Special thoughts and feelings.C. Detailed accounts of daily activities.D. Descriptions of unforgettable events.4.The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is ________.A.to experience itB.to live the present in the futureC.to make memoriesD.to give accurate representations of it【文章大意】作者曾经把写日记看作保留过去的一种方式,一次山谷旅行的经历让作者对日记的理解发生了变化,现在作者认识到过有意义的生活就是体验生活,而不是记录生活。
