第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项A

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.

Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.

"We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth."

According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13

East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.

It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our data suggests that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less."

In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

51. The discovery shows that Westerners ________.

A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth

B. consider facial expressions universally reliable

C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways

D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions

52. What were the people asked to do in the study?

A. To make a face at each other.

B. To get their faces impressive.

C. To classify some face pictures.

D. To observe the researchers' faces.

53. What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 6 refer to?

A. The participants in the study.

B. The researchers of the study.

C. The errors made during the study.

D. The data collected from the study.

54.In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to ________.

A. do translation more successfully

B. study the mouth more frequently

C. examine the eyes more attentively

D. read facial expressions more correctly

55. What can be the best title for the passage?

A. The Eye as the Window to the Soul

B. Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions

C. Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills

D. How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding

B

I’d like to share a little story with you about something that happened when I was four. I remember it clearly. Our loving family dog was nearing the end of his life. My father picked him up and put him in a little bed we had made for him. Our dog, my companion, whom we had cared for, bit my father when he attempted to help him. How could he? Why? I couldn’t understand it. I didn’t like him anymore.

I hadn’t thought about that story for a long time but something that happened last week brought it back to me. I went to speak with a friend. When I knocked on the door, I met in an instant an angry look and a few harsh(尖刻的)words. When the door was slammed(砰地关上)in my face, I stood there shocked, and in a rush, I was reminded of my dog bit my father 20 years ago or so. What brought that story back was that same feeling of betrayal.

Both stories taught me something the next day. You see, when I got up in the morning and was told my dog had died, it became clear to me that he must have

been in great pain. For him to have bitten a family member, he could not have been himself. Much the same for the other story when I learned that my friend’s wife had just left him.

We are all beings of our environments, our opinions and feelings. And all of those things can cause you to say and do things that can’t be understood by those who are not in the same situation with you.

If you meet someone either behaving out of character or acting in a way that doesn’t seem to fit the situation, put out your hand and be patient when you think it is least possible for him to do so. You may turn around a story that has a sad ending simply by your actions.

56. The incident that happened when the author was four______.

A. hurt the author’s feeling deeply

B. has puzzled the author ever since

C. left a deep impression on the author

D. made the author dislike dogs

57. What made the author think about the story of about 20 years ago?

A. His friend’s attitude.

B. The photo of the dog.

C. His father’s wound.

D. His friend’s suffering.

58. The author's friend said harsh words to the author because______.

A. he was bad-tempered

B. he was suffering the pain of losing his wife

C. he was bothered by an unexpected visit

D. they once quarreled and he couldn’t forgive the author

59. What conclusion did the author get from the two stories?

A. Misunderstanding should be removed in time.

B. Sometimes one will be hurt without any reason.

C. Many people think more of themselves and less of others.

D. Many factors will affect one’s behavior.

60. What’s the author’s advice to us?

A. Help those in need.

B. Look before you leap.

C. Learn to understand others.

D. Tolerance is a kind of virtue.

C

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on well with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it had ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how p ositive today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one number of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds: they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell the m when I’m going out clubbing. As long a s they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with me.” Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I’d done all

my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments, “Our su rprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over. ”

61. What is the popular image of the teenagers today?

A. They worry about school.

B. They dislike living with their parents.

C. They have to be locked in to avoid troubles.

D. They quarrel a lot with other family members.

62. The study shows that teenagers don’t want to __________.

A. share family responsibility

B. cause trouble in their families

C. go boating with their family

D. make family decisions

63. Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today’s parents ____________.

A. go to clubs more often with their children

B. are much stricter with their children

C. care less about their children’s life

D. give their children more freedom

64. According to the writer, teenage rebellion __________.

A. may be a false belief

B. is common nowadays

C. existed only in the 1960s

D. resulted from changes in

families

65. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Negotiation in family.

B. Education in family.

C. Harmony in family.

D. Teenage trouble in family.

第II卷(非选择题共35分)

第四部分:写作(共两节)(满分35分)

第一节:阅读表达(每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文,请根据短文后的要求答题。

The world is moving so fast these days that if you do not have the right education, you could get left behind. Technology touches every part of our daily lives---even the fast food industry relies on computer assisted systems to speed things to their customers. If you cannot figure out the computer at your local fast food shop, where will that leave you?

Once upon a time, you could have a good life with nothing more than a high school diploma, but those times are gone now. Competition for even the lowest level jobs is fierce, and most employers will give the edge to that extra education now. Jobs that never required a degree before now will certainly be given to the most educated candidate as markets grow tighter and tighter.

Education is not only important on the job front, however. Recent studies show that continually learning will keep your brain more healthy. The more active you keep your brain now, the more active it will remain in the long run. It does make sense if you think about it: if you start jogging, your body feels healthier after a while and will actually long for exercise. The same could probably be said for your brain: make it work to learn something

new, and it will continually seek out the stimulation(刺激)of new information to keep itself sharp.

Education is important for your sense of self and self-esteem. If you allow yourself to think that you are poorly educated, you therefore deserve an old car or a small house and poor life. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and take charge of your own fate. Realize that you are a different person now and evaluate why you did so poorly in the past. Was it because you just could not learn, or because you did not want to focus on your education at that time? You are an adult now, and will be more focused and goal driven. Never say no to education, never say no to yourself.

66. Why does the author mention "the fast food industry" in the first paragraph? (No more than l0 words)

________________________________________________________________________ _______

67. How can you make your brain sharp according to this passage? (No more than 10 words)

________________________________________________________________________ _______

68. What does the underlined phrase "give the edge to" mean? (No more than 3 words)

________________________________________________________________________ _______

69. What should you do to stop feeling sorry and take charge of your fate? (No more than 20 words)

________________________________________________________________________ _______

70. In your opinion, why is education very important? (No more than 15 words)

This friendly visitor centre is a supporter of Welsh honeybees, which are increasingly under threat from climate change and loss of wildflower meadows. It raises visitors’awareness of environmental issues and shows the 4,000-year history of beekeeping and honey-making, from the ancient Egyptians to the Romans. A Hive (蜂巢) Aid scheme lets you adopt a beehive, and regular courses (from £60 per person) train new generations of beekeepers. Fun fact Bees pollinate (授粉) about a third of everything we eat and play an important role in sustaining our ecosystems. In economic terms, honeybee pollination could be worth up to £200m to the UK alone. What about lunch? Next door is the Furnace Tearoom, part of the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre, which serves light bites – wraps (卷饼), fruit salads (£7) and coffee. And the nearby Pavilion Restaurant at the National Trust’s Bodnant Garden has cooked food, including baked potatoes (£5) and daily specials such as local casseroles (焙盘) with bread rolls (£6), plus coffee and cakes. Exit through the gift shop There is a range of bee-themed gifts in our gift shop, including bee toys (£2), wooden honey candy (£2) and a selection of honeys all made by Welsh producers (£5). The bestselling Bodnant honey (£8) goes fast. Getting here We are located just off the A470 on the Bodnant Estate in the Conwy Valley, and 10 minutes from the A55 north Wales coast road. Follow the brown signs just after Bodnant Gardens. Value for money Visits and activities for kids are free, though donations are welcome. Taster days (from £60) and the weekend beekeeping course (£80 per person) are held at Abergwyngregyn village, 10 miles west down the A55. Opening hours The Visitor Centre opens daily from 10 am-4 pm but it is volunteer-run, so phone ahead to check. Expect lots of fun activities around the annual Conwy Honey Fair. 1. What do we know about the National Beekeeping Centre Wales? A. It makes money mainly by selling local honeys.
