For this was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This May Be Your Lucky Day!”For several weeks Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hoping. The cupboards in kitchen were full of things which she did not need. Her husband tried to advise her against buying things but failed. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would approach her and say: “Madam, this is Your Lucky Day. Everything in your basket is free.”One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash-desk. Eating breakfast atthe start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast, increased by 33 percent. For those who feel pain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect performance,” said Arrold E. Bender, former professor of the nutrition a t Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults, “The literature”, says one researcher, Dr. Erresto at the University of Texas, “is poor”.71. The latest year for which figures could be obtained is _______.A. the year the author wrote the articleB. 1977C. any year between 1997 and 1983D. 198372. For those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that _______.A. several studies have been done in the past few yearsB. the omission of breakfast does no harm to one’s healthC. adults have especially made studies in this fieldD. eating little in the morning is good for health73. “…nor does giving people breakfast improveperformance” means ______.A. anyone without breakfast does improve his performanceB. not giving people breakfast improve performanceC. having breakfast does not improve performance, eitherD. people having breakfast do improve their performance74. The word “literature” in the last sentence refers to _______.A. stories, poems, plays, etc.B. written works on a particular subjectC. any printed materialD. the modern literature of America75. What is implied but NOT stated by the author is that _______.A. breakfast does not affect performanceB. Dr.Erresto is engaged in research work at an institution of higher learningC. not eating breakfast might affect the health of childrenD. Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition in LondonPassage FourAbout 35% of all high school graduates in America continue their education in an institution of higher learning. The word college is used to refer to either a college or a university. These institutions offer four-year programs that lead to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor Science(B.S.) degree. Some students attenda junior college (providing only a two-year program) for one to two years before entering a four-year college as a sophomore (二年级生) or junior (三年级生).It is generally easier to be accepted at a state university than at a private one. Most private schools require strict entranceexaminations and a high grade point average (GPA), as well as specific college prep classes in high school. Private schools cost considerably more than state colleges and famous private schools are very expensive. Poorer students can sometimes attend, however, by earning scholarships. Some college graduates go on to earn advanced masters or doctoral degrees in grad (graduate) school. Occupations in certain fields such as law or medicine require such advanced studies.Since college costs are very high, most students work at part-time jobs. Some have full-time jobs and go to school part-time. Often some will take five or more years to complete a four-year program because of money / job demands on their time. While the college and work demands take up the great part of a student’s time, most still enjoy social activities. Sports, dances, clubs, movies, and plays are all very popular. However, gathering together for long, philosophical talks at a favorite meeting place on or near the university is probably the most popular activity.76. College education is _______ in America.A. quite commonB. very rareC. something difficultD. almost impossible77. Which of the following is NOT required for entering most private schools.A. entrance examinationsB. taking part in many activitiesC. GPAD. college prep classes78. How can poor students attendprivate schools?A. Only by working at part-time jobs.B. Only by working at full-time jobs.C. Only by earning scholarships.D. All of above.79. The American college students like to _______ most of all.A. discuss problems on philosophyB. play ballsC. earn enough moneyD. go to the cinemas or theatres80. Reading comprehension (60 points )Directions: There are five reading passages in this each passage is followed by four questions. For each questions there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneFor generations, the Nganyi people of western Kenya have served as rainmakers, helping local communities decide when best to prepare their land and sow their seeds. By observing subtle changes in nature that would be unnoticeable to most people-in air currents, the flowering and shedding of leaves of certain trees, the behaviour of ants, bird songs, etc-they have been able to interpret weather patterns and provide valuable advice. What difficulty do local rainmakers face in making weather predictions? But the irregular weather patterns brought by climate change mean therainmakers can no longer use those sighs to make their predictions. And they don’t have access to the technologies available to meteorologists (气象学家).“Climate change has come on so fast. People don’t know how to adapt or what to plant,”says Obedi Osoce, a traditional weatherman. “Our traditional crops are disappearing because they cannot handle the new conditions. We need new strategies to handle clim ate change.”Now a British-Canadian project is doing just that, linking the rainmakers with government meteorologists. The two groups get together each season and produce an agreed forecast to be spread using a variety of methods suited to communities where many cannot read or write-through ceremonies, public meetings and person-to person comma-kation.Both parties are pleased with the collaboration. “I think the two sciences equally valid. We are marrying our energies to help people better,”says Mr. Onunga, a Nganyi community elder involved in the project.‘The results have been surprisingly good-the community agreed that the forecast was accurate,”says Gilbert Ouma, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi.“Through this project we hope to learn what it is that we can share together to live today and to adapt to tomorrow,”says Professor Laban Ogallo, leader of the Nganyi project.36. A Company Taking Care of Young ParentsPassage ThreeHarry Potter fans will instantly recognize the snowy owl as Harry’s famous companies, Hedwig, but these beautiful owls are easily recognizable not for their magical associations, but for their large size and striking while feathers. Snowy owls are, in fact, the only white owl, and they are a highly sought after species for many birdwatchers to add to their life lists.Foods: Small mammals, birds, fish.Habitat and Migration: Snowy owls are found in far northern latitudes including tundra, a vast treeless frozen region in the Arctic. Their breeding grounds (繁殖地) are in the Arctic tundra, and they migrate south throughout Canada during the winter. In exceptionally server winters or when food supplies are searce, these owls can appear much further south than their normal range. While principally a North American bird, they can also migrate to the northern areas of Europe an Asia.Behaviour: Snowy owls, like all owls, are powerful animal bunters that are active mostly at night but can bunt and feed during the day, especially when food supplies are low. These owls will rest on the ground or on rocks, stumps and other low favorable points. Males can be fierce when defending the nest, and both genders will also perform an “injured bird” act to tempt animal invaders to go away from the nest.Reproduction: Snowy owls may incubate (孵卵) 3-10 eggs for 30-34 days, or the incubation may be done primarily by the freak. The baby owls remain in the nest for 14-21 days and will attempt their first flight when they are 42-58 days old. Mated pairs will raise one group of young birds per year unless food supplies are inadequate and then no eggs may be produced.44、What have you learned from Paragraph 1?A. They may stop producing eggsB. They will reduce their flightsC. They will be less active at nightD. They will only hunt during he day Passage FourWe lost two superstars in 1977. Neither man’s admirers have been able to understand the success of the other one. And this tells us something of the difference between the generations that the two singers represent. There were similarities between Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley. Both reached fame while young and became very rich. Although neither one had any musical education, both developed their own musical styles, which were first criticized by the critics and later studied as new forms in the art of popular song. Both men had successful movie careers despite a total lack of acting ability. Both were creations of the microphone, which made it possible for singers with weak voices to be heard beyond the third now. With Bing the microphone was usually hidden; but Elvis brought it to the stage. The difference between the two men reflects the changing values in American life Crosby’s music was soothing( 令人舒畅的) , Presley’s was disturbing. Crosby was singing to wartime America. His audiences had all the disturbance they could handle in their private lives, they did not want to buy more at the record shop and the movie theater.Crosby’s admires always said how “relaxed”and “natural”he was. When Presley began his career, the whole country had become relaxed and easygoing. Its young people, who had no memory of trouble times, found it boring. They were hungry for excitement. They welcomed Elvis, who was certainly not the kind of young man their parents would admire. Presley wasload and vulgar( 粗俗的) ——and be was bringing something new and exciting. It is probably too simple to explain each man in terms of changes in the economic and political situation. Something in the culture was also changing.48、Which of the following could be inferred about Crosby and Presley?A. They died in the same year.B. They became popular in 1977C. They influenced each other in musicD. They represented the postwar generation49、In which aspect the singers are similar to each other?A. Their songs were widely used in moviesB. They became famous in late year of their livesC. Their musical styles are recognized by the criticsD. Neither of them received any formal musical education50、What did Crosby’s audiences get from his music?A. ExcitementB. DisturbanceC. Ease and comfortD. Passion and thrill51、What is most Presley to be discussed if the passage continues?A. The political situation that the two singers facedB. The cultural changes that the two singers experiencedC. The economic influence on the music of the two singersD. The message that the two singers expressed in their musicPassage FiveThere are millions of left-handed people in the world. A number of them got together in 1975 to form an association called Left-handers International. The purpose of the organization is to fight discrimination (particularly to jobs) and to inform the public. They want everybody to understand the left-handers are neither “strange” nor sick nor dangerous. Many studies have been made recently about hand preference in humans. They have brought interesting results. It has been found, for instance, that many more men than women are left-handed; that all children use both hands about equally until they are three years old; and that hand preference is not clearly marked until age six. Above that age, most people not only favour one particular hand but also have a favourite eye, a favourite ear and foot.We know that the left side of the body is controlled by the right side of the brain, which seems that this particular half is the seat of emotions, imagination, and of the sense of space. And, indeed, lefties in seem to be more creative than the right-handers; they also seem to be more athletic and to do better in some professions which ---like sports----require a good sense of space. In a large school of architecture , it was found in 1977 that 29% of the professes and 23% of the graduating students were left-handed---while lefties represent less than 10% of the general population. Finally, left-handers may be more stubborn and impulsive( 冲动的) than right-handers. And they are more likely to suffer from problems such as stuttering( 口吃) and a difficulty in reading called dyslexia. The problems are more serious in left-handed persons who have been forced to favour their right hand. Doctors insist that one should never try to change a child’s hand preference.52、What does Left-handers International aim to do for left-handers?A. To create new jobsB. To promote equalityC. To show discriminationD. To study hand preference53、According to recent studies, when is hand preference formed?A. Before birthB. At birthC. At age threeD. At age six54、Compared with right-handers, left-handers______A. are less creativeB. are more easygoingC. have a better sense of spaceD. do better in most professions55、Left-handers are advised to stick to their hand preference because_____A. it is fun and comfortable to be left-handersB. the left hand is just as good as the right handC. it is difficult for them to switch to the right handD. changing hand preference may cause serious problemsV. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneStrange things happen to time when you travel, because the earth is divided into twenty four time zones, one hour apart. You can have days with more than twenty-four hours, and weeks with more or fewer than seven days.If you make a five-day trip across the Atlantic ocean, your ship enters a different time zone every day. As you enter each zone, the time changes one hour. Traveling west, you set your clock back; traveling east, you set it ahead. Each day of your trip has either twenty-five of twenty-three hours. If you travel by ship across the Pacific, you cross the international date line. By agreement, this is the point where a new day begins. When you cross the line, you change your calendar one full day, backward or forward. Traveling east, today becomes yesterday, traveling west, it is tomorrow!51. The difference in time between zones is _________ .A) more than seven daysB) twenty-four hoursC) one hourD) seven days52. If you are thinking of buying a dog, however, you should first decide what sort of companion you need and whether the dog is likely to be happy in the surroundings you can provide. Specialist advice is available to help you choose the most suitable breed of dog. But in part, the decisiondepends on common sense. Different dogs were originally developed to perform specific tasks. So, if you want a dog to protect you or your house, for example, you should choose a breed that has the right size and characteristicsYou must also be ready to devote a good deal of time to train the dog when it is young and give it the exercise it needs throughout its life, unless live in the country and can let it run freely. Dogs are demanding pets. Cats love the house and so are satisfactory with their place which is secure, but a dog is loyal to its master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection. The best time to buy a baby dog is when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old so that it can transfer its affection from its mother to its master. If baby dogs have not established a relationship with the human being until they are over three months old, their strong relationship will always be with dogs. They are likely to be too shy when they are brought out into the world to become good pets.55. Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?A) Size and characteristics of the dogs should be considered too.B) It is common sense that is the most important when choosing a dog.C) You should decide what kind of dog you want.D) You can always get help from the specialists.56. They have to show that they will be able to pay for each year of study.Students have to consider not only the tuition, the cost of classes, but also meals and a place to live, known as room-and-board. They also need money for books , supplies ,social activities and other things.Educational advisers say foreign students should keep enough money in a local bank to pay for at least two months of spending. So how much will it cost every year to study at an American school? Generally speaking, the answer is: a lot. The University of Washington says foreign students are paying more than thirty-six thousand dollars this year. Over dozens of years, scientists have tried to do different experiments to find the cure. Their findings are university the same——— there is no cure. Many people, however believe that they know the cause of and cures for the common cold. For example, they believe that it is possible to get a cold if we get chilled, if we get extra tired, or if we are too close to a person with a cold. The key is managing expectations .”She says, “In the book , I focused on what were the things most likely to make people happy, the ones with the most scientific research.”And before you start thinking that being happy is yet another task and then feel guilty when you don’t do it, Scott said the road to a positive outlook begins with very easy, small steps.“Women today feel overloaded(超负荷):they’ve got to be thin, got to have a career, got to have a perfect relationship and the las t thing you need is to be thinking you’ve got to be happy all the time.” she said. But it is import ant to improve your quality of life. Stop rushing around and filling each moment of the day with things to do, and then sit down and think about your life a nd how yo u’re feeling. The gay community (同性恋社区)was very much in sight and vocal(呼声高的)and successfully got support for its cause. Now we are rapidly approaching the point where about one half of all AIDS cases in the world are women. But no one is taking this dangerously highlevel of infection(感染) among women seriously enough.Women usually have a worse time dealing with HIV than men do. In most cases, the woman is taking care of children as well as her sick partner. She may not even have time to take care of herself. The HIV-positive woman ends up shouldering the family as well as her own personal problems. Men, however, are usually the ones who have insurance, income and access to doctors. They get care. Women often do not.The discrimination(歧视) against HIV-positive women is simply terrible. They are likely tobe more inactive than men at home and workplace because too many people think that women are the cause of the disease. This is not at all true. They get it from men. They don’t just simply have HIV. Of course, there’s social discriminatation against all people with HIV. People with HIV,then, are scared that other people will know they are HIV-positive and that they will, therefore ,be discriminated against. For example, it’s very difficult for people with HIV to travel. They are not allowed to enter many countries, including theUnited States,China and Russia. The biggest difficulty an HIV-positive woman must face is isolation(孤独). Once a woman knows she’s HIV-positive, she lives in fear that other people will find out. She’s so frightened that she will go into hiding, int o an isolated place by herself. It’s not at all uncommon to meet a woman who has been HIV-positive for nearly 10 years and has never told anyone, except her doctor. And the resulting stress is enough to make her sick. But HIV-positive women who get support, who can discuss their trouble and then do something about it—whether that means taking better care of themselves or going to the United Nationsto struggle for their rights—are likely to live longer. Active women don’t die out of shame in a corrner. This happens to too many HIV-positive women.56.Women with HIV were ignored for a long time because______.A.they didn’t become infected with HIV very oftenB.they didn’t often ask people to support their causeC.the public focused on men who were HIV positiveD.the public thought women could take care of themselves57.Why do women have more trouble with HIV than men do?A.Women are infected more often than menB.Women with AIDS cannot enter some countriesC.Women are not as vocal as men with HIV areD.Women do not take care of themselves as well58.Why are women with HIV discriminated against?A.They are not active at home and don’tworkB.Men don’t like women who are HIV positiveC.They are much weaker than men with HIVD.People think they are the cause of the disease59.The greatest difficulty that HIV-positive women face is______.ck of moneyB.pain of the diseaseC.unemploymentD.keeping to themselves60.What should a women with AIDS keep from doing?A.Getting support from others withAIDSB.Discussing their trouble with their doctors onlyC.Struggling for their rights as people with AIDSD.Making other people frightened of themSectionB Short Answer Questions (15points,3foreach)Directions: Answer each of the questions in less than 10words.How to Talk to Anyone, Anytime, AnywhereI never wanted to be any thing but abroadcaster, a talker. And for 40 years, I’ve been doing just that. To me, the ability to talk well is one of the greatest pleasures in life and can bring with it some of life’s greatest rewards.I’m not saying it’s always easy. But the more you work at it, the easier it will be. To get you started, here are my four basis rules for learning how to talk to anyone, anytime, anywhere: Attitude CountsAfter the failure in Miami, I made a commitment to keep talking even when it might not be comfortable to work at it.The right attitude———the will to talk———is critical to becoming a better talker.I think one reason I’ve had a certain amount of suc cess in broadcasting is that the audience can see I love what I’m doing. You can’t pretend that.Broaden Your HorizonsThe best conversationalists(对话者)are able to talk about issues and experiences beyond their own daily lives. You can expand your world through travel, but you can also do it without leaving your own backyard. Exchanging ideas with people who have backgrounds different from your own can help improve your conversational skills and your thinking.Keep It LightOne of my most important rules of conversation is never to stay too serious for too long. Similarly, a key quality I look for in a potential guest is a sense of humor. If the guest is not afraid ofmaking fun of himself/herself, it is most appealing to the audience.Be GenuineAnybody I’ve ever talked to for more than a few minutes knowns at least two things about me: I’m from Brooklyn, NewYork, and I’m Jewish(犹太人). That’s because I’m deeply proud of both. You should be as open and honest with your conversational partners as you’d wa nt them to be with you, willing to reveal what your background is and what your likes and dislikes are. That’s part of the give-and-take of conversation, part of getting to know people.Whether you‘re talking to one person or a million, the rules are the same: it’s all about making a connection. If you follow all these rules given in the passage, you can become a master of talk.61.The author regards the ability to_____________ as one of the greatest pleasures in life.62.The passage gives four basic rules for learning how to talk to__________________.63.The author thinks the right attitude,_______________, is critical to becoming a better talker.64.Exchanging ideas with people of different backgrounds will help improve our ____________and ourthinking.65.If we follow all these rules given in the passag, we will certainly become___________________.IV.Translation(20points,4foreach)Directions:In this part, there are five items which you are required to translate into Chinese, theses entences are all taken from the reading passages you have just read. 2012年浙江专升本(英语)真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)全部题型 2. Reading Comprehension 3. Cloze 5. Translation 6. WritingReading ComprehensionIt is often claimed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in a consumer society where there is an enormous demand for commercial products of all kinds. Moreover, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase presumes(意味着)an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe that nuclear energy provides an inexhaustible(用不完的)and economical source of power and that it is therefore essential for an industrially developing society. There are a number of other advantages in the use of nuclear energy. Firstly, nuclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents an enormous step in our scientific evolution and , whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel. However, opponents of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct threat not only to the environment but also to civil liberties. Furthermore, it is questionable whether ultimately nuclear power is a cheap source of energy. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost ofuranium(铀)in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market. In the long run, environmentalists argue, nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology(生态)to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Thus, if we wish to survive, we cannot afford nuclear energy. In spite of the ease against nuclear energy outlined above, nuclear energy programs are expanding. Such an expansion assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments on both sides, it seems there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.1.According to the passage, what can help solve the social problem of unemployment?A.Developing science and technology.B.Increasing the industrial production.C.Increasing the demand for commercial products.D.Providing an abundant and cheap energy supply.正确答案:B解析:细节题。
