试题四Part I Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections:There are three reading passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested answersmarked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Doctors say very few children survived cancer before the nineteen seventies. Improved treatments now offer hope of long-term survival for almost eighty percent of young cancer patients. Yet the chemotherapy drugs and radiation used to stop their cancers can lead to other problems later.A newly reported study looked at more than ten thousand adults who survived childhoodcancers. They were treated between nineteen seventy and nineteen eighty-six. Their average age at the time of the study was twenty-six.The study compared their medical histories with those of three thousand of their brothers and sisters. The researchers found that sixty-two percent of the cancer survivors had at least one long-term health problem. The same was true of only thirty-seven percent of the brothers and sisters. The cancer survivors were eight times as likely as their siblings to have severe or life-threatening conditions as adults. And many of the survivors had three or more conditions. The cancer survivors were at higher risk of problems like heart disease and early bone loss. Chemotherapy can damage bone growth during an important period of development. And radiation for some cancers can increase the risk of other cancers later.Survivors of bone cancers, cancers of the central nervous system and Hodgkin's disease were at highest risk for health problems as adults. The study also found that girls who survived cancer were more likely than boys to have problems later.Doctors say newer cancer treatments are a little safer but not much. Still, the good news is that many of the conditions linked to cancer treatments can be found when they are still treatable.1. What kind of treatment used to stop their cancers can lead to other problems later according to this passage?A. Chemotherapy drugs.B. Radiation.C. Chemotherapy drugs and radiation.D. Surgery.2. A newly reported study researched over ten thousand adults _____________.A. who used only radiation to stop their cancersB. who were treated after 1986C. whose average age at the time of the study was over forty-sixD. who survived childhood cancers3. The word “siblings” in the third paragraph means _____________.A. parentsB. childrenC. brothers and sistersD. relations4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. This passage is most probably an excerpt from ________________.A. a newspaper editorialB. a heath reportC. a personal diaryD. a science fictionQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:“United 93”, in contrast to another film “Flight 93”, has some glaring differences. The names of the passengers are barely mentioned, and never is an individual person singled out in a moment of suspense. The passengers all seemed equals, finding themselves in the same frightening situation with similar thoughts and concerns. The terrorists were fast, merciless and poised. They seemed ready and willing to carry out the tasks they were chosen to perform. This film shows the events of that day for what they were. It also chooses not to immortalize the passengers, but to serve as a wake up call for our people to realize that those events weren't yesterday.Director Greengrass' “United 93” should not be considered to be just a film. It is a testament of courage and should be seen as a compelling look into the human nature. See this film, but not for entertainment values. See this film because while the events of “911”may have changed America, they may not have changed our people. While “Flight 93”seems like an attempt for ground breaking entertainment, “United 93” feels as if Greengrass is telling us that there is something to learn from this tragedy. Possibly the film is trying to say that going through the trauma of “911” wasn't motivation enough to stand up together as a country. Greengrass knew that this film and its subject would gain much attention and controversy, but what one does with the attention is what will ultimately define the film. Like the Oscar winner “Schindler's List”, this film will be regarded highly for the h allowed events depicted but not as entertainment.6. The phrase “that day” in Paragraph One refers to____________.A. the Independence Day of the U. S.B. September the 11th when America was attacked by terroristsC. the day when Flight 93 made its first flightD. the day when the movie “United 93” was screened7. According to this passage, what is the movie “United 93” really trying to convey?A. It means to immortalize the passengers.B. It tries to tell a stirring story for entertainment.C. It means to serve as a wake up call for people nowadays.D. It tries to convey people’s concern about flight safety.8. How many movies are there mentioned in this passage?A. One.B. Two.C. Three.D. Four.9. According to this passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A. As a movie, “United 93” is not quite similar to “Flight 93”.B. The passengers in “United 93” are portrayed as ordinary characters under crises.C. The movie “Flight 93” seems like an attempt for groundbreaking entertainment.D. Greengrass knew the subject of “Flight 93” would gain much attention and controversy.10. The passage is most probably from _____________.A. a movie magazineB. a history textbookC. a governmental documentD. a brochure of an airline companyQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:It happens to every medical student sooner or later. You get a cough that persists for a while. Ordinarily, you would just ignore it—but now armed with your rapidly growing medical knowledge, you can’t help worrying. The cough could mean just a cold, but it could also be a sign of lung cancer. For doctors in training, nurses and medical journalists, hypochondria (疑病症) is an occupational danger. The feeling usually passes after a while, leaving only a funny story to tell at a dinner party. But for the tens of thousands who suffer from true hypochondria they live in a constant terror that they are dying of some awful disease, or even several awful diseases at once. Doctors can assure them that there’s nothing wrong, but since the cough is real, the assurances fall on deaf ears. And because no physician or test can offer a 100% guarantee that one doesn’t have cancer, a hypochondriac always has fuel to feed his or her worst fears.Hypochondriacs don’t harm just themselves; they block the whole healthcare system. Although they account for only about 6% of the patients who visit doctors every year, they tend to burden their physicians with frequent visits that take up excessive amounts of time. And the problem may be worse, thanks to the popularity of medical information on the Internet. They go on the Web and learn about new diseases and new presentations of old disease that they never even knew about before. Doctors have taken to calling this phenomenon cyberchondria (网络疑病症).11. According to the passage, suffering from hypochondria means________.A. you cannot be a good medical student or a medical workerB. you are haunted by a possibly inexistent diseaseC. you will never get rid of this diseaseD. you are tortured by several diseases at the same time12. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?A. Hypochondria happens to everybody sooner or later.B. We n eedn’t worry about hypochondria since it is not dangerous at all.C. Hypochondria originates from too much knowledge of medicine.D. Hypochondria and its unnecessary terrors to both individuals and the healthcare system.13. Why can’t doctors convince t he sufferers that there is nothing wrong?A. Because the doctors can’t cure the minor diseases.B. Because the doctors don’t assure them of that.C. Because the sufferers are deaf and can’t hear what the doctors say.D. Because no doctors can offer a g uarantee that someone doesn’t have a cancer.14. The problem becomes worse because_________.A. the number of patients increasesB. medical knowledge is widely spread on the internetC. doctors haven’t tried their bestD. new diseases and symptoms emerge constantly15. What can you infer from the passage?A. The author considers that hypochondria is an incurable disease.B. The author thinks that the consequences of hypochondria might be disastrous.C. The author suggests that the patients who have hypochondria should set their minds at ease.D. The author sympathizes with the patients who suffer from hypochondria.Section BDirections:In this section there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully, and answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewestpossible words.Spending time in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or merely go there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacket is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become engrossed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spend too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment—without buying a book, of course. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this.A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wa nder round such places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the inevitable greeting: “can I help you, sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire discreetly.16. You entered a bookshop perhaps because you are a book-lover or to go there to buy a book as apresent and even to ___________________________________________.17. But naming with a Chinese characters plus an English letter, as the father of the graduate student did, is not a good idea. It is not very appropriate and normal.Normally, our names consist of three Chinese characters, which is quite different from the names in other countries. The first one is the family name. The second one is the generation name and the last one is the given name. This is the general rule for a Chinese name. In fact, nowadays, a lot of people omit the generation name. However, this is acceptable. The student had trouble in transferring her hukou because of her name. This trouble is caused by not following the rules of writing personal names. What’s more, our Chinese characters are unique without numbers that can not be the same with other languages. But the English letters are different from Chinese characters. If we use the letters, the pronunciation is a big problem, because those letters can also be found in other languages with differentpronunciations. There is no standard how they should be pronounced.Personal names are also a kind of traditional culture in China, which consist of the information of your family and the hopes of our parents. In order to protect our culture and respect the tradition, we should stick to our nation’s standard form of personal names.Section B: Note-WritingUnit 8⼀、词汇短语Text Arigorous [] adj. 严格的,严厉的;严酷的,严峻的【例句】He makes a rigorous study of the plant in the area. 他对该地的植物进⾏了慎密的研究。

V. Reading comprehensionIt is remarkable, the character of the pleasure we derive from the best books. They impress us with the conviction that one nature wrote and the same reads. We read the verses of one of the great English poets, of Chaucer, of Marvell, of Dryden, with the most modern joy—with a pleasure, I mean, which is in great part caused by the abstraction of all time from their verses. There is some awe mixed with the joy of our surprise, when this poet, who lived in some past world, two or three hundred years ago, says that which lies close to my own soul, that which I also had well-nigh thought and said. But for the evidence thence to the philosophical doctrine of the identity of all minds, we should suppose some pre-established harmony, some foresight of souls that were to be, and some preparation of stores for their future wants, like the fact observed in insects, who lay up food before death for the young grub they shall never see.I would not be hurried by any love of system, by any exaggeration of instincts, to underrate the Book. We all know, that as the human body can be nourished on any food, though it were boiled grass and the broth of shoes, so the human mind can be fed by any knowledge. And great and heroic men have existed who had almost no other information than by the printed page. I would only say that it needs a strong head to bear that diet. One must be an inventor to read well. As the proverb says, "He that would bring home the wealth of the Indies, must carry out the wealth of the Indies." There is then creative reading as well as creative writing. When the mind is braced by labor and invention, the page of whatever book we read becomes luminous with diverse references. Every sentence is doubly significant, and the sense of our author is as broad as the world. We then see, what is always true, that asthe seer's (有异常洞察力的人)hour of vision is short and rare among heavy days and months, so is its record, perchance (意外的), the least part of his volume. The discerning will read, in his Plato or Shakespeare, only that least part—only the authentic utterances of the seer—ail the rest he rejects, were it never so many times Plato's and Shakespeare's.Of course there is a portion of reading quite indispensable to a wise man. History and exact science he must learn by laborious reading. Colleges, in-like manner, have their indispensable duty—to teach elements. But they can only highly serve us when they-aim not to drill, but to create; when they gather from far every ray of various genius to their hospitable halls, and by the concentrated fires, set the hearts of their youth on flame.1.By "one nature wrote and the same reads" (Para. 1), the author means that__________.A.the author is rereading his own bookB.nature writing is read by the same peopleC.author and reader live in the same eraD.author and reader are in accord2.The author uses the image of insects (Para. 1) to parallel his discussion of_________.A.past writers storing knowledge for future readersB.authors working in grubby surroundingsC.soulless parents toiling blindly for unknowing childrenD.food chain3.A good title for the second paragraph might be________.A.Creative WritingB.Creative ReadingC.Visions of the PastD.Rating Books4.The proverb the author cites (Para. 2) is used to support his theory that __________.A.one must apply knowledge to extract knowledgeB.the rich need more education than the poorC.all the wealth in the world will not make a man a geniusD.the wealth of the present is found in the past5.The author calls for an educational system that________.A.includes works of the mastersB.teaches students to write brilliantlyC.inspires creativity in scholarsD.not only includes works of the masters but also teaches students to write brilliantly二、I. Reading comprehension:The most curious fact about the detective story is that it makes its greatest appeal precisely to those classes of people who are most immune to other forms of daydream literature. The typical detective story addict is a doctor or clergyman or scientist or artist, i.e., a fairly successful professional man with intellectual interests and well-read in his own field, who could never stand The Saturday Evening Post or True Confessions or movie magazines or comics. It is sometimes said that detective stories are read by respectable law-abiding citizens in order to gratify in fantasy the violent or murderous wishes they dare not, or are ashamed to, translate into action. This may be true for readers of thrillers (which I rarely enjoy), but it is quite false for the reader of detective stories. On the contrary, the magical satisfaction the latter provide (which makes them escape literature, not works of art) is the illusion of being dissociated from the murderer. The magic formula is an innocence which is discovered to contain guilt; then a suspicion of being the guilty one; and finally a real innocence from which the guilty other has been expelled, a cure effected, not by me or my neighbors, but by the miraculous intervention of a genius from outside who removes guilt by giving knowledge of guilt, (The detective story subscribes, in fact, to the Socratic daydream: "Sin is ignorance.") If one thinks of a work of art which deals with murder, Crime and Punishment for example, its effect on the reader is to compel an identification with the murderer which he would prefer not to recognize. The identification of fantasy is always an attempt to avoid one's own suffering: the identification of art is a compelled sharing in the suffering of another. Kafka's The Trial is another instructive example of the difference between a work of art and detective story. In the latter it is certain that a crime has been committed and, temporarily, uncertain to whom guilt should be attached; as soon as this is known, the innocence of everyone else is certain. (Should it turn out that after all no crime has been committed, then all would be innocent.) In The Trial, on the other hand, it is the guilt that is certain and the crime that is uncertain; the aim of the hero's investigation is not to prove his innocence (which would be impossible for he knows he is guilty), but to discover what, if anything, he has done to make himself guilty. K, the hero, is, in fact, a portrait of the kind of person who reads detective stories for escape. The fantasy, then, which the detective story addict indulges in is the fantasy of being restored to the Garden of Eden, to a state of innocence, where he may know love as love and not as the law. The driving force behind this daydream is the feeling of guilt, the cause of which is unknown to the dreamer. The fantasy of escape is the same, whether one explains the guilt in Christian, Freudian, or any other terms. One's way of trying to face the reality, on the other hand, will, of course, depend very much on one's creed.1. The opening paragraph of the passage suggests that the author would consider True Confessions and moviemagazines as_______.A. sources of factual data about societyB. worthwhile contemporary periodicalsC. standard forms of escapist literatureD. less addictive than detective fiction2.
