1、How can you guide your students to pronounce ‘ü’?

We can start from ‘i’, then keeping saying ‘ee’, meanwhile, round your lips, And finally you’ll get ‘ü’.

2、How can you teach four tones?

We can divide our ‘[sound] pitch’into 5 degrees. 5 is the highest and 1 the lowest. Flat tone; rising tone; falling tone

1st tone is very high-pitched. For example ‘ā’, it sounds like you are seeing a doctor. 2nd tone is a rising one. It sounds like you have a question: ‘what?’

3rd tone sounds quite sleepy…

4th tone is a falling one. It sounds like you are angry. ‘No! Stop!’

3、How can you teach Chinese characters?

Step 1: Start from simple picture-like ones.

Step 2: Try to involve more Chinese characters as if they are related to each other in certain ways.

6、List the vowels whose spellings do not actually tell the actual pronunciations. Try to explain as if your students have made a mistake on one of them.

There are a few vowels in Mandarin Chinese whose spellings do not tell their actual pronunciations. For example ui –it’s not a combination of U and I as it is written, because its actual pronunciation is UEI, which should be said like ‘way’ rather than ‘wee’.

Other examples include AO, whose actual pronunciation is AU, pretty much like ‘ow’ as in ‘how’ and ONG, which should be pronounced as UNG.

7、Explain the difference between 常常and 常in English.

More often than not 常常and 常, as adverbs, are interchangeable in Chinese, but this does not mean they equal to each other. On some occasions they might be different. Some people have even written long essays to differentiate them. Their main differences lie in two points. The first is related to negative sentences. We tend to use 不常rather than 不常常. The second is related to imperative sentences. Again 常is preferred, for example常回家看看instead of常常回家看看.

8、How can you choose proper media for your teaching?

Proper media will definitely help our teaching inside and outside the classroom. The learning objectives for that lesson should be my first priority. Every activity in a lesson should of course be decided by and for the LO. For example, if the LO is to learn the ‘comparison’ pattern, a PowerPoint slideshow will seem more academic and suitable.

The teaching and learning content is also one of my considerations. For a brief introduction to Chinese New Y ear, for example, a video clip will certainly show much more than any other way such as a slideshow or story-telling.

My students are another big concern of mine. Their age, learning abilities, learning styles, demands, motives, et cetera – they all can decide the use of the media. Another point is how I present my lesson via a proper media. I believe that different forms should be adapted to different lessons or different activities in a lesson. Charts, PowerPoint presentations, video clips and films are all of use so long as they fit the situations.

And after each lesson I need to re-exam it as well to see if I have chosen the right media for the right event. And I need to ponder how I can improve my teaching by employing suitable media.

9、How can you be fair in your class?

We all know how important it is to be fair, but what are the criteria for being fair since there is no absolute fairness. Therefore we, as teachers, have to set up a series

of rules from the very beginning of our teaching and learning. The rules should be told and to all the class and be carried out by the same standard –once rules are established, we cannot bend the rules as we wish. This means everyone needs to know what is encouraged and what is not allowed so that they will be responsible for that they do, and no one will feel a certain person is preferred or wronged. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Being fair also requires teachers to treat every single student equally. We cannot judge them by their abilities, races, economic statues, sexes, etc., nor by their previous behaviour or their past. Instead, everyone should have the equal opportunities to improve themselves. All the students should be involved in any class activities, though they might be involved in different ways.

10、If a student keeps asking you questions in class, how will you solve it?

First of all I will see what his or her questions are. If some questions are typical ones asked by many learners of Chinese language, I might answer some of them briefly, because my answers will benefit the whole class as well. Or, if his or questions are related to the learning objectives of this lesson, it would not harm if I answer some of them.

However, if I am sure that answering this student’s questions would take too much time, or my possible answers would not help the rest of the class, I would then tell this person that we are actually in a class so I have to leave his or her questions behind. If he or she is still interested after class, I would love to answer him or her.

11、Will you ban phones in your class? Why or why not?

I think it depends on a few preconditions, such as whom I teach, why they learn Chinese, their age and their normal behaviour.

One of the good things about the mobile phones – smart phones in particular – is that it is easy to download e-dictionaries onto them and look up a word on them. Also there are lots of useful apps available online that will help students with their Chinese learning, especially the apps for learning Chinese characters.

The thing is how I make sure they will use their phones properly. I think I have to state it clearly as a rule in my first lesson that phones will be allowed so long as they are properly used; however, when anyone is caught misusing their phone in the class, it will be regarded as misbehaviour of course, and the consequence of that could include the confiscation of their phone.

I have to say even this is still a little bit ideal. If quite a few students normally do not behave themselves, I have to ban phones in the class, because the order in the class is one of the most important things. I d on’t think the students will have any reason to complain about the ban, because it will not violate any school rule.

12、Which aspect of Chinese culture do you appreciate best? Why?

The external characteristics of Chinese culture are its unitarity, consistency and inclusiveness. Among them the inclusiveness fascinates me the most, because I believe Chinese culture would not be as colourful as it looks if the inclusiveness were never one of its characteristics.

Chinese culture was not only created by Han people. People of other ethnic groups created wonderful cultures as well. Different cultures met and influenced each other –in a peaceful way usually. People learnt from each other as well, absorbing positive elements from other cultures; this made all cultures in China even more amazing. All of these cultures are parts of rich Chinese culture.

The inclusiveness of Chinese culture also means the communication between Chinese culture and cultures of the rest of the world. Chinese people also took a leaf from their book such as advanced concepts, systems, techniques et cetera. These necessary complements enriched Chinese culture and pushed it forward.

Today the world is more like a village. There will be more and more communications among nations and peoples. And because of the inclusiveness of Chinese culture, I have the faith that it will be even fascinating and make its own contribution to this world.

13、What are you going say when someone asks you ‘why do Chinese eat dogs’? First of all, it is a fact that some Chinese eat dog, but on the other hand I don’t see any difference from eating other meats. Hope this is not offending you. People in the West don’t eat dogs because, for them, dogs are pets – no one eats their pet of course. But they might have misunderstanding of eating dogs in China.

Firstly, not every Chinese person eats dogs on every day. As a matter of fact, many Chinese people do not eat dogs and dog meat is never a default meat in China –believe or not, it is rare so some people would like to try it.

Historically there is another reason –because of the large population in China, sometime people did not have enough food to feed themselves, which means they had to eat whatever available in order to survive –from grass roots to tree barks, and from mice to dogs. That is probably why for most Chinese people basically accept eating anything.

Thirdly, as I said, eating dogs is of no difference from eating other meats. Western people eat horses and venison. They eat pork as well, which Chinese people will be definitely fine with that, though it will offend Muslims.

What I am trying to say is that there is no such thing as eating the right meat. For me what is much worse than killing and eating animals is the misunderstanding among the people.

14、How much will you allow yourself to be involved in the ‘office gossip’ when

you teach abroad?

We all gossip, definitely. And no one can avoid it. Therefore it is not always a bad thing if I am involved in the office gossip. It all depends on what people gossip about. If it is about, say, the life, I can share with them my understanding. This kind of involvement surely creates a good atmosphere around me and my co-workers. If the gossip is about a specific person –especially one of our colleagues, or a specific country, and in a nasty way, I will not be involved. In this case if I am asked to say what I think, I will say something fair and end up this topic. My attitude or my tone will be a reminder for the rest of the office. As adults they will find I am not interested,

so they will either leave me alone or end up the topic. Of course I will enthusiastically talk to them on another topic when there is a chance, because that is what we should do as colleagues and friends.

15、Y ou found your flat/room was in a poor condition so you reported it to your

head teacher/principal. This has made your line manager unhappy/angry.

What are you going to do?

Even before I talk to my line manager (or he/she talks to me), I should know I have done something improper, because according to the procedure I should have reported to him/her in the first place. I should not be surprised or feel wronged when I find my line manager being upset or even angry. Because of the mistake I have already made, I need to make apologies for the trouble I have made to people concerned, including my line manager, the head teacher and my director of the Confucius Institute.

I also need to re-think if the room condition is really under the standard that I should get. If not, I should know I am definitely wrong. If so, I will talk to my line manager about it, explaining what I am complaining about and why. I will sound polite and reasonable, sticking to facts and rules in order to solve the problem.

Of course I should know such things should not happen. If I, unfortunately, am put to a room below the standard, what I should do is to communicate with my line manager in an effective way.
