According to a recent study; the more you strugglewhile you are teaming new information, the better you can remember it later. It was Kapur who came up with the idea that struggling can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups, with students in the first group asked to solve math problems with the teacher's help and those in the second group to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher. With the teacher's help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers.Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly, but they did come;up with a lot of good ideas. The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand theprocess; not just the solution.Kapur's advice for students is to put a lot of effort into teaming something new rather thangoing to your teacher for help. A challenging new book by theHarvard University psychologist Steven Pinker says that the answer is `yes."In The Better Angels of Our Nature Pinker presents data showing that human violence, while still very much with us today, has been gradually dropping. Moreover, he says, 0over the long history, women have been and will be a pacifying(实现和平的)force. Traditional war is a man's game: tribal(部落的)women never get together to attack neighboring villages." As mothers, women tend to maintain peaceful conditions in which to raise their children. Those with different opinions immediately reply that women have not made war simplybecause they have rarely been in power. If they had the power as leaders, the tough conditions of the world would force them to make the same decisions that men do. Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, and Indira Gandhi were powerful women; all of them led their countries to war.But it is also true that these women rose to leadership by playing according to the politicalrules of "a man's world." It was their success in conforming to male values that enabled their rise to leadership in the first place. If women held half of leadership positions, they might behave differently in power. So we are left with the broader question: does gender really matter in leadership? Variouspsychological studies show that men incline towards the hard power of command, while women are collaborative(协作的)and instinctively understand the soft power of attraction and persuasion.38. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OnePinecone or pine nut? Friend or foe? Distinguishing between the two requires that we pay special attention to the telltale characteristics of each. And as it turns out, us humans aren't the only ones up to the task. According to researchers at the University of Iowa, pigeons share our ability to place everyday things in categories. And, like people, they can home in on visual information that is new or important and dismiss what is not."The basic concept at play is selective attention. That is, in a complex world, with its booming, buzzing confusion, we don't attend to all properties of our environment. We attend to those that are novel or relevant," says Edward Wasserman, UI psychology professor and secondary author on the paper, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology:Animal Learning and Cognition.Selective attention has traditionally been viewed as unique to humans. But as UI research scientist and lead author of the study Leyre Castro explains, scientists now know that discerning one category from another is vital to survival. "All animals in the wild need to distinguish what might be food from what might be poison, and, of course be able to single out predators from harmless creatures," she says.More than that, other creatures seem to follow the same thought process humans do when it comes to making these distinctions. Castro and Wasserman's study reveals that learning about an object's relevant characteristics and using those characteristics to categorize it go hand-in-hand. When observing pigeons, "We thought they would learn what was relevant (step one) and then learn the appropriate response(step two),"Wasserman explains. But instead, the researchers found that learning and categorization seemed to occur simultaneously in the brain. The study, "Pigeons' Tracking of Relevant Attributes in Categorization Learning," was published in the April2print edition of the Journal of Experimental Psychology:Animal Learning and Cognition. Funding was provided by the UI psychology department. (321 words)26. Scientists used to believe that ________.A. Animals and men may follow the same thought processB. "Pigeons' Tracking of Relevant Attributes in Categorization Learning"B. “Animal Learning and Cognition”C. “Experimental Psychology”D. “Characteristics and Categories”Passage TwoLast night the waiter put the celery (芹菜) on with the cheese, and I knew that summer was indeed dead. Other signs of autumn there may be—the reddening of the leaf, the chill in the early-morning air, the misty evenings—but none of these comes home to me so truly. There may be cool mornings in July; in a year of drought the leaves may change before their time; it is only with the first celery that summer is over….There is a crispness about celery that is the essence of October. It produces pleasant sounds when chewed. Moreover, it is excellent for the complexion (肤色). One is always hearing of things which are good for the complexion, but doubtlessly celery stands high on the list. After the burns of summer one is in need of something and celery serves one well.Keats, when introducing the season’s fruits and vegetables, did not pick out celery in many words, but plainly including it in the general blessings of autumn. Yet, what an opportunity he missed by not concentrating on that precious root. Apples, grapes, and nuts he mentions specially—how poor a selection! For apples and grapes are not typical of any month, while as for nuts, have we not a national song which asserts distinctly, “Here we go gathering nuts in May”?Celery should be eaten alone in a restaurant, for it is the only food which one really wants to hear oneself eat. Celery is not a thing to share with any man, and if you are wise you will sit away from other diners. Take warning from one who has learnt a lesson. One day I lunched alone at a restaurant, finishing with cheese and celery. Another diner came in and lunched too. We did not speak—I was busy with my celery. From the other end of the table he reached across for the cheese. That was all right! It was the public cheese. But he also reached across for the celery—my private celery! Foolishly I had left the sweetest and crispest shoots till the last, teasing myself pleasantly with the thought of them. Horror! To see them grabbed from me by a stranger. He realized later what he had done and apologized, but of what good is an apology under such circumstances?31. Which of the following reminds the author of the arrival of autumn?A. Reddening leavesB. Celery works better in facial care than most fruits and vegetables.D. Celery is better known than most vegetables for its crispy roots.34. Why does the author think celery should be taken as the real autumn food compared to apples, grapes and nuts?A. The rest can be found in the market all year round.B. Celery grows ripe and tastes delicate only in fall.C. Celery tastes as good in autumn as in other seasons.D. The rest are typical of a certain month in a year.35. Originally rhinestones were referred to Czechoslovakian or Bohemian glass dating as far back as the 13th century in Bohemia and the Czech Republic. Both places have a history steeped in beautiful hand blown glass as well as molded and cut glass.By 1918 glass was no longer limited to functional items. Czechoslovakian glass began to make its appearance in dazzling and brilliant jewelry. This Czech glass became known as rhinestones.Rhinestones were manmade gems from highly refined glass. By using various metals the glass was colored to the desired shade. It was then pressed into molds. Each stone was then ground and polished by machine, resulting in a brilliant glass stone. Often the stones were foiled on the back which increased their brilliance.Today, the same refining process is still used. You will often hear rhinestones referred to as paste. Originally paste was referred to a glass stone that was made of ground glass which was molded and then melted, producing an opaque dense glass frosted stone. Paste had many air bubbles and swirl marks. The high lead content glass was then polished and faceted, and set on either copper or silver resulting in a brilliant stone. Today the term “paste”usually refers to rhinestones. In Europe rhinestones are often referred to as paste, strass, and diamante.Austria is another area with a history in rhinestone production. In 1891 Daniel Swarovski created a new glass cutting machine which quite literally revolutionized the jewelry business. This machine could cut faceted glass, producing finely finished product in a very short time. Prior to this invention it would take a very long time for each stone to be cut by hand and finished. Swarovski’s background in glass making, combined with his glass cutting machine soon found him producing rhinestones with a lead content of over 30%. The brilliance of these rhinestones was superior to anything seen on the market. Swarovski wasn’t content with his invention and the best rhinestones ever seen. His next invention was once again transforming to the jewelry industry. He created a vacuum plating for the backs of the stones with silver and gold, reducing the need forhand labor. Still today Swarovski rhinestones are recognized as the highest quality in the industry. Over 80% of rhinestone jewelry manufactured in America use Swarovski rhinestones.Rhinestones have played an important role in costume jewelry for hundreds of years. It is used to enhance and decorate the costumes, and sometimes rhinestones will provide the entire design. During the Victorian period common design patterns for jewelry included snakes, flowers, and hands most often adorned with rhinestones. The 1890s were a time for extravagant jewelry heavily with rhinestones. As time moved forward designs became simpler with figural shapes once again making their fashion statement. However this time they were small and more elegant with small rhinestone decorations.During the Edwardian period extravagance had made a comeback with diamonds and pearls being the focal point. Once again rhinestones were in heavy use, often used to imitate the real thing.During the 1920s fashions were rapidly changing. Dresses had gone from tight, fitted to a looser, more comfortable style. Two distinct styles occurred during this ear --- the feminine style and the androgynous style (having both female and male characteristics). Jewelry from the 1920s drew on the art decoration period. The majority of rhinestone jewelry was made with clear rhinestones. As the 1920s moved jewelry once again became bolder. Dramatic color was in style. Designer Coco Chanel was an integral figure in setting the stage for jewelry of this era.During the 1930s, during the Depression, labor-intensive fashion was no longer feasible. While the world in chaos, jewelry represented an affordable comfort to many women. Inexpensive costume jewelry could be used to revitalize an old outfit. The industry began to produce bright colored enamel pieces decorated with rhinestones. Dogs, birds, or cats with a rhinestone eye were commonplace. The jewelry during 1940s once again became big and bold with rhinestones being produced in every imaginable color, large stones set on large bold setting was the norm.By the 1950s there were two very distinct looks --- elegant and sophisticated for the more mature woman, and casual and fun for the younger woman. The 1950s saw jewelry that were made completely from rhinestones. For the younger woman were flirty prices, for the older woman sophisticated elegance. Whole sets of rhinestones jewelry became extremely popular. In 1953 the aurora borealis rhinestone was introduced to the market with its fabulous array of color. It was an instant hit.By 1906s women were wearing very functional clothing. By the late 1960s the hippie fashions were extremely popular with their roots tied to Mother Nature. Tie dyed shirts, long flowing skirts, frayed jeans were everywhere. This generation had no interest in rhinestone jewelry.By the mid 1970s, the punk look had been born and the rhinestone was revitalized. It was the disco movement brought the rhinestone back to center stage. The disco movement turned into the club movement during the 1980s and rhinestone jewelry continued to gain popularity.Since the 1970s rhinestones have remained main stream in the jewelry world. They continue to gain popularity and today there is a style to suit almost every one’s needs. There is rhinestone jewelry which is perfect for a bride, rhinestone jewelry for a prom girl, rhinestone jewelry for the young and fun crowd, the business woman, the sophisticated woman, and the mature woman. Part 5 Reading Comprehension (Multiple Choice)(每小题:1 分)Directions: Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the same passage or dialog. Ours is a big world, and full of many different people. People with many varying (不同的) points of view are often running up against others who have different opinions. Those of us who smoke are just one group of many. Recently, the activism (采取行动) ofnon-smokers has reminded us of the need to be considerate (体谅的) of others when we smoke in public. But, please! Enough is enough! We should like to remindnon-smokers that being polite is a two-way street. If you politely request that someone not smoke you are more likely to receive an agreeable response than if you give an ugly look and say something unkind. If you speak directly to someone, you are more likely to get what you want than if you complain to the management. Many of us have been smoking for so long that we sometimes forget that others are not used to the smell of burning tobacco. We' re human, and like everyone else, we occasionally offend unknowingly. But most of us are open to friendly suggestions and comments, and quite willing to change our behavior to accommodate others.Smokers are people, too. We laugh and cry. We have hopes, dreams, and aspirations. We have children, mothers, and pets. We eat our hamburgers (汉堡包) with everything on them and give respect to the flag at Fourth of July picnics. Most of these colleges were established in the 19th century; they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else. At that time major universities and colleges accepted only men. In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result some women's colleges decided to accept men students too. Others, however, refused to change. Now these schools are popular (流行的) again. The president of Trinity College (三一大学) in Washington, D.C. said that by the end of the 1980s women began to recognize that studying at the same school with men did not mean women were having an equal chance to learn. The president of Smith College in Massachusetts says a women's college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. For example, she says that in a women's college a higher percentage of students studies mathematics than in a college with both men and women.Educational experts say men students in the United States usually speak in class more than women students do. In a women's college, women feel freer to say what they think. Women's schools also bring out leadership capabilities in many women. Women arerepresented everywhere. For example, at a women's college every governing office is held by a woman. Recent studies reportedly show that this leadership continues after college. Women Should be Given the Same Education as MenD. Education in AmericaQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog. Since the late 1960s a growing number of women have expressed a strong dissatisfaction with any marriage arrangement in which the husband and his career are the most important considerations in the marriage. By the end of the 1970s, for example, considerably less than half of the women in the United States still believed that they would put their husbands and children ahead of their own careers.More and more American women have come to believe that they should be equal partners in their marriages. This stage of marriage, although still unusual in most American marriages at present, will grow most rapidly in the future. In an equal marriage, the wife gets a full-time job or career which has equal importance to her husband's. The long-standing division of labor between husband and wife comes to an end. The husband is no longer the main provider of family income, and the wife no longer has the main responsibilities for household duties and raising children. Husband and wife share all these duties equally. Power over family decisions is also shared equally. The rapid change in women's attitudes toward marriage in the 1970s reflected the rapid changes in the larger society. The Women's Liberation Movement appeared in the late 1960s,demanding an end to all forms of prejudice against females. An Equal Rights Amendment (修正案) to the US Constitution was proposed which would make any form of prejudice on the basis of sex illegal, and though it has failed to be confirmed, it continues to have millions of supporters.11.Since the late 1960s more women have been dissatisfied withthe marriage in which __________________.A. they are unhappyB. they are in a lower positionC. only the husband earns moneyD. the wife only takes care of the household12.What is the long-standing division of labor between husbandand wife in America?A. The same is true in some smaller countries such as Spain and Portugal, where it is the only medium reaching a general national audience. In many countries, (Sweden and Denmark, for example) the state-owned television accepts no advertising. In many other countries the amount of commercial (商业广告) time is very much limited, as in France, Germany, and Italy. Russian state-owned television began accepting a limited amount of advertising in 1988.The chief reason that television is so well liked among United States advertisers is that it reaches a vast number of people at the same time. While it can cost well over 100,000 dollars, a 30-second commercial on network television can be seen and heard by as many as 25 million viewers. For companies that must make prospects aware of their products and convince them of their benefits immediately, there is nothing as efficient as television advertising.Because it employs motion as well as words, pictures, sounds, and music, television is a valuable medium for products that lend themselves to demonstration. No other medium is as effective inshowing how quickly an automobile can move or how well a certain type of wristwatch will stand up under heavy use and continue to run. In the same way, it is an ideal medium for showing how some products can make a person feel better about him- or herself, such as long-distance telephone calls.16.According to the passage, which of the following statements istrue?A.
