Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running may also help you live longer.Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 adults. About a quarter of the adults have a good habit of running. The study found these runners were much healthier than non-runners. In fact, the runners lived, on average, three years longer than the non-runners.Running may be good exercise, but it can be difficult on the body. Here are commonly shared ideas among fitness experts to lower the risk of injury for people who are new to running.O Take it easy.Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too hard. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed.O Get good running shoes. There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoe that offers the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should have a new pair of shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.O Take good notes.Take time after each run to write down notes about what you did and how you felt. That’s where the language was first spoken. But England is often called by other names. This often confuses people and I wonder if you know what these names mean. So, now I would like to tell you about this matter of names.I believe that you have heard people use the names—England, Britain or Great Britain. Let’s see what each ofthese names means. If you look at a map of Europe, you’ll see a group of islands—one larger island off the northwest coast, one smaller and many tiny ones. These make up what is called the British Isles (不列颠群岛). The largest island of the British Isles is Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The smaller island is Ireland (爱尔兰). Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England. But sometimes the Word “England” is used instead of “Britain”. Why so? In ancient times, what is Britain now used to be three different countries. People in these different countries spoke different language. Over many years the three countries became one. England is the largest and richest of the three and it has the most people. So the English people take it for granted that their own name stands for the whole island. There’s another thing that confuses peopl e: sometimes you may hear people say “the Untied Kingdom ofGreat Britain and Northern Ireland”. That is official name of the country. Northern Ireland is only one sixth of the island of Ireland. The rest of the island is an independent state, called the Republic of Ireland. So we have the names of “England”, “Britain”, “Great Britain”, and “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. Now do you know what each of them means?16. We both needed some new clothes and were hoping to find a television set. When we got to station,we split up. So I left my husband and started looking around the shops. Unfortunately all the clothes were in very large sizes and so were not suitable for me. But I did buy a television at a very cheap price, so I felt quite pleased with myself. When I arrived at the station, my husband was not there. So I sat down in a nearby cafe to have a cup of tea. I can't wait for us to smile at each other and say good morning. When you arrive only seconds before the lecture commences, I'm indifferent to anything but your arrival. Instead of reviewing my lesson, I anticipate your footsteps and listen for your voice. Today is one of your late days, but I don't mind because after a month of denying the impulse to ask you out, today I'm feeling bold. Today I'm inclined to act.2 I know dating has changed dramatically in recent years, and for many women, asking men out isn't daring. But because of my traditional upbringing, the simple notion of asking you out seems abnormal. Growing up, I heard the clear message: Men must take the initiative and make contact. They should call, ask and pay for the date. However, during my years at the university, I've learned otherwise. Many of my women friends have put a spark in their social lives by taking the initiative with men. My girlfriends reckon that it's essential for women to participate more actively in the dating process. "I can't be idle and wait," my former roommate once said. "Hard as it is, if I want to date, I have to ask guys out!"”3 More women are taking the initiative and invite men out, and many men say they view this new phenomenon with approval. They are relieved that dating no longer solely depends on their willingness and courage to take the first step. Then why am I so nervous?4 I tell myself to relax since dating is more casual today. A college date means anything from studying together to simply having leisure time together like watching a film. Most of my peers prefer casual dating because it's cheaper and comfortable. Students have fewer anxiety attacks when they ask somebody to play tennis than when they plan a formal occasion.5 As an added bonus, casual dating also encourages people to forge healthy friendships prior to starting romantic relationships. Young people can relax and get to know each other more easily this way. For example, my roommate and her boyfriend were friends for four months before their chemistry clicked. They went out often with a bunch of mutual friends. They alternated paying the dinner check. "He was like any other friend," my roommate said laughing. Another friend of mine believes casual dating improves people's social lives, allowing them to circulate in wider social circles. When she wants to let a guy know she is interested, she'll say, "Hey, let's go get a yogurt." or "How about a cup of tea?"6 Who pays for it? It's not as easy as it used to be because the traditional rules of courtship are undergoing major changes. Preliminary statistics also affirm this. A plurality of young men say women should chip in and help pay after a few dates. An almost equal percentage of women offer to pay for themselves, even on a first date. But widespread confusion still exists. The new rules have yet to be clarified.7 My own past dates have taught me some things. Either "going Dutch" or allowing my date to pay can be a definite challenge. One date whipped out his wallet on our first date before I could suggest otherwise. During an after-dinner walk, he proceeded to tell me he was romantically interested in me. After I explained I was more interested in friendship, he seemed unhappy. He explained that since I'd accepted his paying for my dinner, he'd assumed I was interested in romance. He seemed angry with himself for treating me. I regretted allowing him to.8 Another date frowned when I hastily opened my purse, pulled out my wallet, and offered to go Dutch. I asked politely, "How much do I owe you?" He said, "Uh, uh, you really don't owe me anything, but if you insist …" He looked exceedingly embarrassed. To him, my gestur e of offering to pay had conveyed a message of rejection.9 Everyone seems confused as they try to clarify the new rules of dating. Who should ask whom out? Who should pay and when? So, while I do think dressing up and going out on traditional, formal dates is a blast, I thrive on casual dating because it has brought a valuable dimension to my social life. With casual dating, there's less pressure and more equality. I can give roses as well as receive them! Casual dating is worthwhile because it works.10 So here I am, waiting. No magic formula guarantees he will say "yes". I just have to relax, be myself and ask him out in a no-nonsense manner.11 He finally arrives. Sliding into his desk, he pats my shoulder and asks, "Hi, what's up?"”12 "Good morning," I answer cautiously. With a knot in the pit of my stomach, I conquer my fear and ask, "Hey, how about lunch after class on Friday?"13 "You mean after the midterm?" he says with barely concealed enthusiasm. "I'd love to go to lunch with you."14 Thrilled and smiling broadly, I confirm, "Well then, we'll save the date!" "Yes, we will!" he replies cheerfully.1 Why was the author feeling bold that day?(2.0)A、 The boy she would like to date smiled and said, good morning to her.B、 She was very anxious to greet him.C、 She can't wait to hear his voice.D、 She has been waiting for too long to talk to him.正确答案: D二、完型填空(共1题,30分)1、Do you feel as confused and manipulated as I do with this question, themore.each other. But why do people read newspapers?Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings —battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown or killed — took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in ournewspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same day they happen.Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America’s fastest growing businesses. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international businessmen or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couples — people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better qualityfurniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But whether that causes any harm is not clear, scientists at the National Institute of Health said at a conference last month, adding that the study will not likely settle concerns of a link between cell phones and brain cancer. “What we showed is glucose (葡萄糖) metabolism(代谢)(a sign of brain activity) increases in the brain in people who were exposed to a cell phone in the area closest to the antenna,” said Dr. Nora Volkow, whose study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study was meant to examine how the brain reacts to electromagnetic(电磁的) fields caused by wireless phone signals.Volkow said she was surprised that the weak electromagnetic radiation(辐射) from cell phones could affect brain activity, but she said the findings do not shed any light on whether cell phones cause cancer. “This study does not in any way indicate that. What the study does is to show the human brain is sensitive to electromagnetic radiation from cell phone exposures.” Use of the devices has increased dramatically since they were introduced in the early 1980s, withabout 5 billion cell phones now in use worldwide. Some studies have linked cell phone exposure to an increased risk of brain cancers, but a large study by the World Health Organization did not of fer a clear answer to this. Volkow’s team studied 47 people who had their brain examined while a cell phone was turned on for 50 minutes and another while the phone was turned off. While there was no complete change in brain metabolism, they found a 7 percent increase in brain metabolism in the region closest to the cell phone antenna when the phone was on.Experts said the results were interesting, but urged that they be understood with great care. “Although the biological significance, if any, of increa sed glucose metabolism from too much cell phone exposure is unknown, the results require further investigation,” Henry Lai of the University of Washington in the U.S. and Dr. Lennart Hardell of University Hospital in Sweden, wrote in an article in JAMA. “Much has to be done to further investigate and understand these effects.” They wrote.11. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A. Cell phone use is dangerous.B. Cell phone use causes cancer.C. The human brain is an electromagnetic field.D. There are about 5 billion cell phone users in the world right now.12. Doctor Volkow was astonished because ______.A. her research has shed light on her understanding of cell phoneB. she found that cell phone exposure is harmful to human brainC. she found that using a cell phone for about 50 minutes could influence or change brain activityD. human brain is not responsive to electromagnetic radiation13. According to the passage, cell phones were launched _______。
大学英语(三)-3习题及答案一、阅读理解April Fool’s Day is traditionally a day to play practical jokes on others, send people on fool’s errands(差事), and fool the unsuspecting. Noone knows how this holiday began but it was thought to have originated in France. The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582, in France. New Year was celebrated on March 25 and celebrations lasted until April 1st. When New Year’s Day as changed from March 25 to January 1st in themid-1560’s by King Charles IX, there were some people who still celebrated it on April 1st and those people were called April Fools. Tricks performed on April Fool’s Day range from the simple to th e elaborate. Setting a roommate’s alarm clock back an hour is common. The news media even gets involved. For instance, a British short film once shown on April Fool’s Day was a fairly detailed documentary about “spaghetti farmers” and how they harvest thei r crop from the spaghetti trees. Whatever the prank, the trickster usually ends it by yelling to his victim, “April Fool!” April Fool’s Day is a “for-fun-only” observance. Nobody is expected to buy gifts or to take their “significant other” out to eat in a fancy restaurant. Nobody gets off work or school. It’s simply a fun little holiday, but a holiday on which one must remain forever vigilant(警惕的), for he may be the next AprilFool! Each country celebrates April Fool’s differently. In France, the April Fo ol’s is called “April Fish”. The French fool their friends by taping a paper fish to their friends’ backs. In England, tricks can be played only in the morning. If a trick is played on you, you are a “noodle”.(4.0 分)1.April Fool’s Day was first celebrated in_________.A.EnglandB.AmericaC.FranceD.Rome得分:4(4.0 分)2.According to the old calendar, April 1st was_________.A.April Fool’s DayB.New Year’s DayC.New Year’s EveD.a regular day得分:4(4.0 分)3.Which is NOT the custom of April Fool’s Day?A.Calling victims of tricks April Fools.B.Playing tricks on somebody.C.Eating out with their family.D.Celebrating this day just for fun.得分:4(4.0 分)4.It can be inferred that on April Fool’s Day people tend to ______.A.be on guardB.feel annoyedC.feel scaredD.be at their best得分:4(4.0 分)5.It can be concluded that ______.A.those who are mentally slow are called April FoolsB.people have been celebrating April Fool’s Day for well over five centuriesC.the celebration of April Fool’s Day is more or less the same.D.the celebration of April Fool’s Day varies from country to country得分:4The comprehension passages on this course are designed to help you increase your reading speed. A higher reading rate, with no loss of comprehension, will help you in other subjects as well as English, and the general principles apply to any language. Naturally, you will not read every book at the same speed. You would expect to read a newspaper, for example, much morerapidly than a physics or economics textbook, but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole range of materials you wish to cover so that the percentage gain will be the same whatever kind of reading you are concerned with. The reading passages that follow are all of an average level of difficulty for your stage of instruction. They are all about 500 words long. They are about topics of general interest that do not require a great deal of specialized knowledge. Thus they fall between the kind of reading you might find in your textbooks and the much less demanding kind you will find in a newspaper or light novel. If you read this kind of English, with understanding, at 400 words per minute, you might skim through a newspaper at perhaps 650-700, while with a difficult textbook you might drop to 200 or 250.Perhaps you would like to know what reading speeds are common among native English-speaking university students and how those speeds can be improved. Tests in Minnesota, U.S.A., for example, have shown that students without special training can read English of average difficulty, for example, Tolstoy’s War and Peace in translation, at speeds of between 240 and 250 w.p.m. with about 70% comprehension. Minnesota claims that after 12 half-hour lessons, once a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no loss of comprehension, to around 500 w.p.m. It is further claimed that with intensive training over seventeen weeks, speeds of over 1000 w.p.m. can be reached, but this would be quite exceptional.(4.0 分)6.According to the passage, a higher reading rate of English depends on______.A.a large vocabularyB.learning other subjects well besides EnglishC.a good comprehension of the reading textsD.different reading speeds for different types of texts得分:4(4.0 分)7.According to the article, the reading passages on this course are ______.A.more difficult than a textbook on a particular subject.B.easier than a light novelC.more demanding than news storiesD.of the same category as novels and newspapers得分:4(4.0 分)8.You can expect to read your textbooks ______.A.more quickly than you read the passages on this courseB.re quickly than you read a newspaperC.more slowly than you read the passages on this courseD.faster than any other kind of material得分:4(4.0 分)9.For a book of average difficulty the average untrained native speaker at the university of Minnesota ______.A.reads at 500 w.p.m.B.reads at 400 w.p.m.C.reads at about 1,000 w.p.m.D.reads at about 245 w.p.m.得分:4(4.0 分)10.An untrained student’s reading speed can be ______ with intensive training over twelve weeks.A.increased four timesB.doubledC.tripledD.increased a little得分:4二、单选题(3.0 分)1.
