第四节阅读并判断正误。(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)

请阅读下面的短文,并根据短文内容,判断下列句子的正(T)误(F)。

It is common knowledge that man prefers to use his right hand when doing anything requiring one hand. There are mainly two types of theories that try to explain the development of right hand preference in man. The first theory holds that the human body itself needs the preference of one hand over the other. The second type of theory suggests that pressures from society or from the living conditions (or both) lead to the high increase of right hand preference in man. This theory is supported by human and animal studies that tried to change hand preferences.

Unfortunately, there are few written records throughout history which can prove those theories about hand preferences. There are, however, other things that can be used to study this matter. Nearly all cultures have art forms showing human beings in various activities. We might expect that such drawings and paintings would tell us what the artists actually observed

in their cultures about hand use.

From a study of more than 5,000 years of art works, including 1, 180 examples of paintings and drawings, we know that in 93% of the cases the right hand was used regardless of which period or which area was examined.

41. There are only two theories trying to explain the development of right hand preference in man. _______

42. Human and animal studies have shown that hand preferences can be changed. ________

43. Written records throughout history can strongly prove those theories about hand preferences. _________

44. People want to use other things like drawings and paintings to study hand use. _________

45. The case study of the art works proved that the majority of human beings use the right hand. ________

第五节阅读并选择最佳选项。(共15 小题;每小题2分,计30分) 请阅读下面的材料,并从下列各题所给的A,B,C,D四个选项中,选择最佳选项。

A

Millions of years ago the elephant order was very large; there were many types, both large and small, and even some with four tusks. As late as the Stone Age, great elephants with huge tusks wandered through Europe, Asia and North America. Today the orde r is reduced to only two species, the African and Indian elephants.

African elephants have bigger ears and tusks than the smaller Indian elephants; they also have a flatter forehead and a concave(凹的)back. The tusks of male elephants develop from the teeth in the upper jaw which grow up to 3.5 meters long. So many African elephants have been hunted for their valuable tusks that the species is now quite rare. The Indian elephant has been tamed for centuries to carry large loads and perform other heavy work. Only the male Indian elephants bear tusks, and these are used for defense, to knock trees down and to dig for roots and water.

Elephants are the largest of all land animals. The African bush elephant is the greatest in size, with males growing up to 3.5 meters tall and weighing up to six tons. Elephants have just one huge cheek tooth in each half of each jaw, which is used for crushing (捣碎) food. When a cheek tooth wears out it is replaced by another one from behind it. An elephant is mature at the age of 15 and usually dies at the age of 60. Cow elephants produce one elephant every two years. The young calf takes 21 months to develop inside the mother.

The elephant's trunk is used for gathering food, often up to 100 kg per day of leaves, tree bark, grass and roots. Its tip can pick up small objects. The elephant drinks by sucking up water with its trunk which is then forced out into its mouth. It can give itself a shower-bath of water or mud in the same way. Although elephants have poor sight, they have a good sense

of smell. When they move their trunks from side to side or raise them in the air they are smelling out their surroundings.

46. Where did the elephants live in the Stone Age?

A. Asia and South America.

47. Compared with Indian elephants, African elephants have

A. Because a lot of them died from heavy work.

B. Because a lot of them were hunted for food.

C. Because a lot of them died during an earthquake.

D. Because a lot of them were hunted for their tusks.

49. What is NOT th e trunk of elephants used for?

A. Gathering food.

At least 32 people were killed on February 20th as cars and houses were swept away during flooding and mudslides (泥石流) caused by a violent storm on the Portuguese island of Madeira.

Emergency services struggled to manage as roads were blocked by fallen trees and bridges fell down, separating parts of the popular tourist destination, which lies about 560 miles off the southwest coast of Portugal.

As flood waters rose, people fled from low-lying areas of the main city, where 69 injured people were taken to hospital.

Phone lines were knocked out, forcing emergency rescue services to appeal over local radio stations for off-duty doctors and nurses, while local authorities called in workers to operate heavy machinery to clear roads and remove debris (残骸).

Following the extreme weather - with violent winds of more than 60 miles per hour and heavy rain - television yesterday showed powerful streams of water and mud streaming through the streets, dragging and turning cars upside down.

Cathy Sayers, a British holidaymaker in the city, told the BBC, "We have

had very bad weather in the last week, which is very unusual because this is normally a sunny time of year. Looking at the sea now, the waves are extremely large. There was not really any kind of warning that it would be so bad.”

A spokesman of the Foreign Office said it had received no reports of injuries among British tourists, who were being advised to stay indoors. Along with Funchal, other towns on the island's south coast are thought to have been hit badly, particularly the district of Riberia Brava, where a number of people died. A major concern for the emergency services was for residents of the Nuns valley, a mountainous area that rescue workers have had difficulty reaching.

The storms were the deadliest to hit Madeira since October, 1993 when eight people died. Madeira's regional president, Alberto Jardim, spoke to the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to appeal for emergency aid.

There is a scene that is repeated up and down the land during the month of June Outside a church in some Scottish town or village a small crowd has interrupted its daily affairs to gather on the pavement. Near the west door a dozen or so overdressed people are glancing impatiently at their watches. The men seem a little self-conscious in their hired kilts; the women hold their wind-blown dresses and loudly admire each other's hats. They are all lively and talkative, yet at the same time strangely reserved. The crowd ignores them, barely noticing when they disappear into the church. Even the arrival of the groom rouses little excitement. These participants

are not the main attraction. Everyone is waiting for the bride.

Whatever her age or appearance, everyone will smile and express approval. By convention, all brides are beautiful. Nobody says so, but the spectators feel cheated unless she steps out of a car, dressed in white from head to toe. The nearer she matches their image, the greater their satisfaction is. This event is not merely a wedding; it is a tradition, and such occasions are potentially dangerous. Participants must pay strict attention to detail. An untraditional bride destroys the magic.

When the crowd has left, some bystanders will remain to watch the bride walk out of the church on the arm of her groom. The guests troop out behind the happy couple and all gather on the pavement with an obvi ous air of relief.

A piper strikes up Mairi’s Wedding and the guests start shouting and jumping everywhere, putting the photographer off his work. Before the bride and groom lead their party to the reception, someone is sure to disobey the priest and scatter forbidden confetti (五彩碎纸).

The particulars of this scene are modern; yet three elements are present that have existed since marriage in Scotland began - ancient Roman law redefined in a Christian context, Celtic tradition, and pre-Christian tradition.

56. Why is the scene mentioned in this article often seen all over Scotland in June?

A. It's hot in June so men can wear kilts and women can put on beautiful dresses.

B. A lot of Scot tish people like getting married at that time of the year.

C. In June people can get away from their daily affairs and go to church.

D. June is considered the luckiest month of the year.

57. The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 1 refers to

A. the overdressed people

B. the bride and groom

C. the people on the street

D. the people's hats

58. Please put the following sentences in correct order according to the passage.

a. The bride arrives.

b. The couple walks out of the church.

c. A piper plays some music.

d. The groom arrives.

e. The bride and groom lead people to the reception.

f. People wait outside the church.

A. f, d, a, c, b, e

B. f, d, a, b, c, e

C. d, f, a, b, e, c

D. d, a, f, b, e, c

59. The underlined part “putting the photographer off his work” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.

A. making the photographer feel relieved

B. giving the photographer a chance to rest

C. having the photographer taken away from his duty

D. disturbing the photographer when he is taking pictures

60. What can we infer from the passage?

A. If the bride is dressed all in white traditionally, she is considered b eautiful.

B. Spectators of a wedding ceremony are particularly interested in the groom.

C. Confetti is forbidden at the wedding ceremony because it is not all white.

D. Women going to a wedd ing ceremony pay most attention to each other. 2010年全国基础教育英语综合能力竞赛(习思能力竞赛)

It speaks 36 than words. According to specialists, our bodies send out more 37 than we realize. In fact, non-verbal(非语言)communication takes up about 50% of what we really 38 . And body language is particularly 39 when we attempt to communicate across cultures. Indeed, what is called body language is so 40 a part of us that it's actually often unnoticed. And misunderstandings occur as a result of it. 41 , different societies treat the 42 between people differently. Northern Europeans usually do not like having 43 contact(接触)even with friends, and certainly not with 44 . People from Latin American countries 45 touch each other quite a lot. Therefore, it's possible that in 46 , it may look like a Latino is 47 a Norwegian all over the room. The Latino, trying to express friendship, will keep moving 48 . The Norwegian, very probably seeing this as pushiness, will keep 49 - which the Latino will in return regard as 50 . Clearly, a great deal is going on when people 51 .
