Romantic Period of English Literature General introduction

1798-1832 the period often referred to as the Romantic Triumph was between the publication of Lyrical Ballads to the death of Walter Scott. (1832-1901 the Victorian Age)

The romantic period came into being during the Napoleonic Wars, and flourished during the painful economic dislocations which were their aftermath. It saw union with Ireland; it witnessed the suffering which was attendant upon the Industrial Revolution; it was torn by Chartism and the great debates centering around the Reform Bill; it developed a sensitive humanitarianism out of witnessing the suffering of the masses; it both espoused and despised the doctrine of utilitarianism. An industrial England was being born in pain and suffering. The throes of

developing democracy, the ugliness of the sudden growth of cities, the prevalence of human pain, the blatant presence of the “profit motive”–all helped to characterize what was in many respects “the best of times…the worst of times.”

During the Age of the Romantic Triumph, a philosophical Romanticism based on value in the individual, on the romantic view of nature, and on an organic concept of art dominated the English literary mind. Optimism was the spirit of the times, although it was often an optimism closely associated with the impulse to revolt and with radical political reform.

The Romantic Period was a “golden age” of poetry, rich with sonorous voices of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, Byron, Tennyson, and Arnold, etc.. It was also a great age for the novel,

producing Godwin, Scott, Austen, the Brontes, Thackeray, Dickens, and the early George Eliot.

Thomas Percy, Thomas Chatterton, William Blake, and Robert Burns. They laid the foundation for the development of Romanticism in

A strong attachment to feelings and emotions.

A deep sympathy toward common or disadvantaged individuals.

And establishing a highly melancholic and nostalgic tone.

A highly subjective mood.

The Romantic Period of English Lit. refers to 1798 with the Publication of Lyrical Ballads, to 1832, with the Death of Walter Scott.

The glory of the age is the poetry of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Moore, Southey, and Scott.

The Lake Poet Trio: Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey.

A rebellion against rationalism, a shifting away from the reason as a fundamental tool to solve human problems, and to improve human lives. This is characterized by a rejection of sciences, and reemphasis of feelings.

A revolution against tradition, inspired by the French Revolution, and triggered by the Industrial Revolution, which is

revealed by the call of most Romantic Poets for radical changes aiming at creating a freer, equal, and more friendly world. The pursuit of freedom, equality and love among mankind.

A return to nature as a healing force. Romantic poets are frequently found to return to nature for wisdom, inspiration, hope, and beauty.

Romanticism is characterized by:

Free and unrestrained imagination that is not disciplined by reason and limited by realities.

Focused on the inner world of the poets, aiming at expressing the feelings. As a result, it is subjective rather than objective, psychological rather than realistic.

Resorting to far and distant, exotic events or images as carrier of their messages.

Melancholy

Nostalgias

Glorification of the commonplace Romantic Period is predominantly poetry rather than prose.

The Romantic Period marks the second greatest period in the history of British literature.

William Wordsworth, 1770-1850

The chief representative of British Romantic poets, and of the Lake Poets

Wordsworth was inspired and greatly influenced by the French Revolution. He wrote in Prelude:

Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, But to be young was very heaven. Which reveals his excitement at the prospect of revolutionary change, which is characterized by freedom, equality, and fraternity.

But compared with other Romantic poets of his time, Wordsworth is not considered a revolutionary poet. Wordsworth?s poetry experiences a shift from radicalism to conservatism in his later years, for which he was appointed the Poet Laureate, and for the same reason he was much criticized and attacked by later poets.

Wordsworth in the Preface to “Lyrical Ballads”, a collection of poems in collaboration with Coleridge, defined poetry as “a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.”

Close up those barren leaves;

Student presentation on Wordsworth

I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud Published in 1807, the poet?s enchantment at natural beauty while wandering freely in the countryside. The poem is highly subjective rather than objective, with its focus on the poet?s impression and feelings rather than beauty itself.

The poem emphasizes the effect of such experience upon the poet?s memory, and as a result, the event has become a lasting source of joy, and a healing factor in the days of pains and sorrow. Such an effect is realized by the faculty of imagination and memory in a solitary state.

The sonnet was written in carriage on a tour to France. In the poem, the poet expresses the pure beauty of the city of London on an early autumn morning, and his love of the city.

The poem expresses the poet?s love of freedom by recalling one of Britain?s greatest poets and freedom fighters, John Milton.

The poem is also a strong criticism of the current state of the country. In this is reflected Wordsworth?s strong dissatisfaction of the realities of England.
