The United States of America, also known as the United States, the U.S., the U.S.A., and America, is a country in North America that shares land borders with Canada and Mexico, and a sea border with Russia. Extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, the United States is a federal republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C.

The present-day continental United States has been inhabited for at least 15,000 years by indigenous tribes. After European exploration and settlement in the 16th century, the English established their own colonies—and gained control of others that had been begun by other European nations—in the eastern portion of the continent in the 17th and early 18th centuries. On 4 July 1776, at war with Britain over fair governance, thirteen of these colonies declared their independence. In 1783, the war ended in British acceptance of the new nation. Since then, the country has more than quadrupled in size: it now consists of 50 states and one federal

district; it also has numerous overseas territories.

At over 3.7 million square miles (over 9.5 million km), the U.S. is the third or fourth largest country by total area, depending on whether the disputed areas of China are included. It is the world's third most populous nation, with nearly 300 million people.

The United States has maintained a liberal democratic political system since it adopted its Articles of Confederation on 1 March 1781 and the Constitution, the Articles' replacement, on 17 September 1787. American military, economic, cultural, and political influence increased throughout the 20th century; with the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, the nation emerged as the world's sole remaining superpower. Today, it plays a major role in world affairs.

The earliest known use of the name America is from 1507, when a globe and a large map created by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in Saint-Die-des-Vosges described the combined continents of North and South America. Although the origin of the name is uncertain, the most widely held belief is that expressed in an accompanying book, Cosmographiae Introductio, which explains it as a

feminized version of the Latin name of Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci (Americus Vespucius); in Latin, the other continents' names were all feminine. Vespucci theorized, correctly, that Christopher Columbus, on reaching islands in the Caribbean Sea in 1492, had come not to India but to a "New World".

The Americas were also known as Columbia, after Columbus, prompting the name District of Columbia for the land set aside as the U.S. capital. Columbia remained a popular name for the United States until the early 20th century, when it fell into relative disuse; but it is still used poetically and appears in various names and titles. A female personification of the country is also called Columbia; she is similar to Britannia. Columbus Day, a holiday in the U.S. and other countries in the Americas commemorating Columbus' October 1492 landing.

The term "united States of America" was first used officially in the Declaration of Independence, adopted on 4 July 1776. On 15 November 1777, the Second Continental Congreadopted the Articles of Confederation, the first of which stated "The Stile of this Confederacy shall be 'The United States of America.'"

The adjectival and demonymic forms for the United States are American, a point of controversy among some.

The Liberty Bell, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American bell of great historic sign ificance. The Liberty Bell is perhaps one of the most prominent symbols associated with early A merican history and the battle for American independence and freedom. Its most famous ringing, on July 8, 1776, summoned citizens for the reading of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress. Previously, it had been rung to announce the opening of the First Continental Congress, in 1774, and the Battle of Lexington and Concord, in 1775. The bell was not officially known as the "Liberty Bell" until 1837, when it became a symbol of the abolitionist movement. Its cast inscription from Leviticus 25:10 states, "Proclaim Liberty thro ughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." The Liberty Bell is one of the most familia r symbols of independence and nationhood within the United States, second only to the Statue of Liberty; strangely perhaps, given its widespread use within the country, the Liberty Bell is hardl y recognized outside of the US, and far less well known as a symbol of America than either th e Statue o f Liberty or the Stars and Stripes. 2.自由女神 the Statue of Liberty Liberty Enlightening the World, known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty, is a statue give n to the United States by France in 1885, standing at Liberty Island in the mouth of the Hudso n River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship between the two nations. The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal structure. Eu gène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and ado ption of the Repoussétechnique. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the U.S. worldwide,[1] and, in a more general sense, represents liberty and escape from oppress ion. The Statue of Liberty was, from 1886 until the Jet age, often the first glimpse of the Unite d States for millions of immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe. It's said that il Sancarlone or the Colossus of Rhodes inspired it. 3. The Washington Monument The Washington Monument usually refers to the large white-colored obelisk at the west end of t he National Mall in Washington, D.C.. It is a United States Presidential Memorial constructed fo r George Washington, the first President of the United States and the leader of the revolutionary Continental Army, which won independence from the British following the American Revolution ary War. Do your teachers still use traditional techniques to teach you nowadays? A revol- ution in teaching techniques is required now。 In the past, we just took it for granted that a teacher' s aim was to teach the students all that he knew and solve all the problems for them。 Therefore, students could mot judge things on their own under this circumstance。 Thus students gradually lost the ability to learn by themselves。 In addition, they were only equipped with the knowledge that were taught in class and made the same judgement upon every problem which might crop up。 Of course, they would find their knowledge not enough to solve practical problems。 So it is time to change the teaching method。 A teacher' s goal is to help the students develop not only the ability to learn by themselves but the skills to make judgements on every aspect on their own。 It' s not necessary for the students to turn to teachers for help while meeting with difficulties。The first thing is to develop the students' abilities to make sound judgements upon any problem and overe difficulties。 All in all, the aim of teaching is to liberate, but mot to fetter the students' innate powers of making sound judgements。 The Importance of Education

My opinion of American education There is no doubt that American education is one of the best education system in the word. Especially in recent years, the American education produced many excellent scientists for the word, and create a lots of good results. They help the word fight against the disease, hungry, poor and so on. American culture education of high level also determines the United States of the world in science and technology leading position. But what do I think of the American education is bothering me in recent. In my opinion, everything has reasons. Due to the developed countries, the education budget is so enough that only a dozen students in each class, the result of it is the citizens' cultural level is very high. And there is a big difference that the children choose their own course, and it is very easy to cultivate professional talents. But on the contrary, the Chinese students study for the exam, and make themselves very tired. The last, what do I think is the most important is that the American education do not constraint children thought. The students not to study achievements, but focus on cultivating children's flexibility. In conclusion, when we talk about the American education, we need show our high respect to them. We envy his education, just because of the students are there to the comprehensive development. They don't care about grades, but think highly of these practical ability.
