Section_ⅠWarming Up & Reading —Pre-reading

Do you know Wilma Rudolph who was once disabled? And what did she do to try to get over the difficulties? Please read the following passage to get the answer.

They called her “the Black Pearl”,“the Black Gazelle”and “the fastest woman in the world”. In 1960, Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics. She was an extraordinary American athlete. She also did a lot to help young athletes succeed.

Wilma Rudolph was born in 1940, in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was born too early and only weighed two kilograms. She had many illnesses when she was very young, including pneumonia and scarlet fever. She also had polio, which damaged her left leg. When she was six years old, she began to wear metal leg braces (支架) because she could not use that leg.

Every week, Wilma's mother drove her to a special doctor 80 kilometres away. Here, she got physical treatments to help heal her leg. She later said, “My doctors told m e I would never walk again. My mother told me I would. I believed my mother.”

Soon, her family's care showed results. By the time she was nine years old, she no longer needed her leg braces. Wilma was very happy, because she could now run and play like other children. When she was 11 years old, her brothers set up a basketball hoop in the backyard. After that, she played basketball every day.

Wilma Rudolph went to her first Olympic Games when she was 16 years old and still in high school. She was the youngest member of the United States team. She won a bronze medal in the sprint (短跑) relay event.

In 1957, Wilma Rudolph started studying at Tennessee State University, where she joined the track team. She did very well at her track competitions against teams from other colleges. In 1960, she set the world record for the fastest time in the 200-metre event. She said,“I ran and ran and ran every day, and I acquired this sense of determination, this sense of spirit that I would never, never give up, no matter what else happened.”

That same year, Wilma Rudolph went to the Olympics again, this time in Rome, Italy. She won two gold medals in the 100-metre and the 200-metre races. She set a new Olympic record of 23.2 seconds for the 200-metre dash. Her team also won the gold medal in the 400-metre sprint relay event, setting a world record of 44.5 seconds. These three gold medals made her one of the most popular athletes at the Rome Games. These victories made people call her the “world's fastest woman”.

A

I am the third daughter in a family of five. I was born at Malden Hospital and was immediately sent to Floating Hospital in Boston. I had a hole in my heart and a low platelet count (血小板计数), which are common problems of people with TAR syndrome (综合征). I came home for a short stay after my birth and then went back and did not return home until just before Thanksgiving. My parents have told me that after I was born our family doctor had a very important conversation with them. He said, “You have two choices with your daughter. One is that you do everything for her now, in the future, and after you die; the other is that you do nothing.” My parents picked the former.

I do not have a great many memories of my childhood but I do remember I spent the first ten years in and out of hospitals. I do remember I stayed in the Boston hospital until I was around two years old and then I went to Shriners. I guess few children can bear that.

I've grown up with great determination. I think that was a personality trait that I was born with and then my family developed that in me as I grew up. I had to deal with a lot of people making fun of me, staring at me, and pitying me. At a young age I realized that I could hide my pain with laughter. So I used that method when other children made fun of me and they stopped a lot faster than if I cried. Laughter was not the expected response so I guess they didn't feel it was fun to continue. There was emotional and physical pain. I required the aid of a walker until I was about five years old. I had about ten major operations before the age of ten. I had to relearn to walk several times. I think having TAR syndrome has made me a strong person physically and emotionally. Despite these difficulties and challenges, I have gone on to be awarded a Master's Degree and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do (跆拳道), and I am now an inspirational speaker.

Helen Keller was one of America's best-known women. She was admired for her courage and

achievements although she couldn't see or hear. She was also known throughout the world for her self-sacrificing work to improve the condition of the blind, the deaf and the speechless. When she died on June 1, 1968, the newspaper Washington Post wrote:“Her life is truly one of the most remarkable phenomena of our time and her death just short of the age of 88 leaves the whole world poorer.”

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. For the first 19 months of her life, she was a pretty and happy baby, normal in every way. Then a sudden illness destroyed her sight and her hearing. Because she could not hear sounds to imitate (模仿), she could not speak. Helen used to say that her real birthday was not June 27, 1880, but March 3, 1887 —the day when Anne Sullivan entered her life. It was Anne Sullivan who taught Helen to spell certain words by a special system, Braille, and even to talk.

Anne Sullivan could not teach Helen Keller to speak until some other important things had been learned. The little girl had to learn to control her actions and feelings. She had to learn that she could not always do what she wanted to do. She had always been able to get what she wanted by using force. The teacher had to change such habits without breaking the child's spirit.

Miss Sullivan's battle began. Sometimes, there was real fighting between the wild child and the strong young teacher. At last, however, the battle was won by Miss Sullivan, who succeeded in showing Helen that she loved her and wanted to help her. The child and her teacher became friends. They continued to be friends until the teacher's death, fifty years later.

The day on which Helen finally accepted Miss Sullivan as her friend and teacher was a great day in Helen's life. After that, the teacher could begin to teach the child language.

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as

Unit 3 Under the sea
