With tomatoes at one end and potatoes at the other,it looks like another strange product from Frankenstein food laboratory. The fictional Swiss scientists is the main character in an l 8 1 8 novel written by Mary Shelley;he created a monster from parts of dead bodies.

But far from being the latest genetically modified(转基因的)plant, this wonder is entirely natural.Called the TomTat0,each plant can produce more than 500 sweet cherry tomatoes as well as a good crop of white potatoes. It is produced using a hi-tech grafting (嫁接)process and was shown to the public yesterday before going on sale to gardeners in the UK for the first time.

However, the project took a lot longer to bear fruit than the plant does.It began l 5 years ago when Paul Hansord, horticultural (园艺)director of mail order gardening company Thompson&Morgan, was on a trip to the US.He spotted a potato plant growing separately under a tomato plant and learned that it is possible to graft the two together because they belong to the same family.

It has been demanding to achieve the TomTato because the tomato stem and the potato stem have to be the same thickness. So that the two can be joined together perfectly. But after a process of trial and error,Thompson&Morgan has worked out a method using a variety of potato that produces the right size shoot.“The TomTato has been trialed for several years and the result is far superior to anything I could have hoped for,a plant full of tomatoes which have a taste that makes shop tomatoes less delicious,as well as,a good crop of potatoes,"Mr Hansord said.

“Each TomTato plant is specially grafted by hand to create this unique double cropping feature."He added,“It’s an all natural and safe process”

The TomTato can be grown inside or outside as long as they are in a large pot or bag, says Thompson&Morgan. It is selling the plants from next spring for£14.99 each.
