Fat, not thin, is today's heated topic. But studies show that we don't notice because it has happened gradually and we have got used to seeing people who are overweight. Men are fatter than women (67% of men and 57% of women are overweight or obese in the UK). Socio-economically poor areas tend to have higher rates of people who are overweight. There is a community effect: you are more likely to be overweight if your friends and neighbors are.

Moderate (中等的) obesity cuts life expectancy by two to four years and severe obesity by a whole decade, according to a major study in 2009. This is most likely to affect today's children. "Obesity is such that this generation of children could be the first in the history of the United States to live less healthful and shorter lives than their parents," said Dr David S Ludwig, director at the Children's Hospital Boston.

More and more very young children are putting on weight they will find it hard to lose. It is far harder to get rid of weight than to put it on, even as a child. Some experts think that if we want to prevent obesity, we will have to find ways to help parents from, or even before, the birth of their Breastfed babies, who can look skinny, compared with their bottle-fed friends, in fact usually have the right weight. Big, fat babies, contrary to the old wisdom, are not healthier babies. Slow growth is the best. Low birth weight babies, in particular, should not be overfed in a bid to help them catch up.

Those who think children are getting fat because they sit in front of televisions too much may also be wrong. A finding from Early Bird is that inactivity does not lead to obesity - obesity leads to inactivity.

Feel tired lately? Has a doctor said he can’t find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong with you. Then, consider this: you might be in a state of subhealth (亚健康).

Subhealth, also called the third state or gray state, is explained as a borderline state between health and disease.

According to the investigation by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of subhealthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam weeks.

Symptoms (征兆) include a lack of energy, depression (压抑), slow reaction, insomnia (失眠), agitation, and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.

The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly and take part in open air activities.

As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements —vitamins and trace elements that are important to the body.

Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract (消化系统). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding subhealth.
