5分钟英语演讲稿篇一Ladies and Gentlemen I d planned to speak to you tonight to report on the state of the union but the events of earlier today have led me to change those pla. Today is a day for mourning and remembering. Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger. We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss.
Nineteen yea ago almost to the day we lost three astronauts in a terrible accident on the ground. But we ve never lost an astronaut in flight. We ve never had a tragedy like this.
And perhaps we ve forgotten the courage it took for the crew of the shuttle. But they the Challenger Seven were aware of the dange but overcame them and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith Dick Scobee Judith Resnik Ronald McNair Ellison Onizuka Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe.
We mourn their loss as a nation together.
For the families of the seven we cannot bear as you do the full impact of this tragedy. But we feel the loss and we re thinking about you so very much. Your loved ones were daring and brave and they had that special grace that special spirit that says /Give me a challenge and I ll meet it with joy./ They had a hunger to explore the univee and discover its truths. They wished to serve and they did. They served all of us.
We ve grown used to wonde in this century. It s hard to dazzle us. But for twenty-five yea the United States space program has been doing just that. We ve grown used to the idea of space and perhaps we forget that we ve only just begun. We re still pionee. They the membe of the Challenger crew were pionee.
And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who were watching the live coverage of the shuttle s take-off. I know it s hard to undetand but sometimes painful things like this happen. It s all part of the process of exploration and discovery. It s all part of taking a chance and expanding man s horizo. The future doesn t belong to the fainthearted; it belongs to the brave. The Challenger crew was pulling us into the future and we ll continue to follow them.
I ve always had great faith in and respect for our space program. And what happened today does nothing to diminish it. We don t hide our space program. We don t keep secrets and cover things up. We do it all up front and in public. That s the way freedom is and we wouldn t change it for a minute.
We ll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and yes more voluntee more civilia more teache in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.
I want to add that I wish I could talk to every man and woman who works for NASA or who worked on this mission and tell them: /Your dedication and professionalism have moved and impressed us for decades. And we know of your anguish. We share it./
There s a coincidence today. On this day three hundred and ninety yea ago the great explorer Sir Francis Drake died aboard ship off the coast of Panama. In his lifetime the great frontie were the ocea and a historian later said /He lived by the sea died on it and was buried in it./ Well today we can say of the Challenger crew: Their dedication was like Drake s complete.

Our tragedy today is a general and univeal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it. There are no longer problems of the spirit. There is only the question: When will I be blown up? Because of this the young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about worth the agony and the sweat.

Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellow human beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day
in this difficult time for the United States it s perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in. For those of you who are black -- coidering the evidence evidently is that there were white people who were respoible -- you can be filled with bitterness and with hatred and a desire for revenge.
We can move in that direction as a country in greater polarization -- black people amongst blacks and white amongst whites filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort as Martin Luther King did to undetand and to comprehend and replace that violence that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land with an effort to undetand compassion and love.
For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act agait all white people I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed but he was killed by a white man.
But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make an effort to undetand to get beyond or go beyond these rather difficult times.
My favorite poem my -- my favorite poet was Aeschylus. And he once wrote:
Even in our sleep pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart
until in our own despair
agait our will
comes wisdom
through the awful grace of God.
What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness but is love and wisdom and compassion toward one another and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country whether they be white or whether they be black.
So I ask you tonight to return home to say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King -- yeah it s true -- but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country which all of us love -- a prayer for undetanding and that compassion of which I spoke.
We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We ve had difficult times in the past but we -- and we will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of lawlessness; and it s not the end of disorder.
