Peggy was a quiet girl.

By the time a child is about4years old,he begins to connect his emotions with others’feelings.When one child says he has a stomachache,some4-year-olds may come over and comfort him.These children are showing their empathy for the one who is ill.

Unlike intelligence,empathy is a skill that children can learn and the best teachers are parents.If a3-year-old shouts out,“Look at the fat lady!”,parents can gently explain why saying that may make the woman feel bad.When a child is about5,parents can ask him hypothetical(假设性的)questions such as“How would you feel if someone took a toy away from you?”or“How would your friend feel if someone took a toy away from him?”

A University of Kansas professor didn’t allow her students to take keyboard-based notes in her classroom in her latest study,hoping to have her students be more focused (专心的)and gain new knowledge.It proved her theory that students are more focused when taking longhand notes.

About86percent of the95students said they felt they paid the same or better attention in the class without a computer in front of them.Among them,about52percent said they paid more attention.

The theory is proved by several other studies.In2014,Pam Mueller and Daniel

Oppenheimer carried out an experiment which got the same findings:students learn more and better when they take notes by hand instead of through a device(设备).Plus,while taking more notes can be good,laptop note takers are more likely to copy down lectures word by word rather than processing information and rewriting it in their own words,which is harmful to learning.When taking notes by hand,a different mode of processing is at play.Students process and rebuild the information based on their understanding.In short, a more complex way of processing is at work.

As expected,the study suggested that those taking notes on keyboard-based devices took more notes.However,those who took notes with pen and paper had a better understanding of the material.

The idea of technology as a distraction is supported by many,including Dr.Vincent Mulrooney.He argues that even though laptops and technology in general are popular, there’s always the risk of technology doing students more harm than good.He also stresses that students taking notes longhand are keener(更敏锐的)and used to critically processing information by editing and summarizing what’s been taught.

However,Carmel Hensey argues that taking notes on laptops doesn’t put students at a disadvantage,but instead encourages active learning.

For Hensey,technology offers priceless value to students by supporting them throughout their school life from lecture attending to exam taking.

“I think students will be better able to recreate the context of the lecture with technology,since they have already downloaded the materials before class.The nature of education is changing and as teachers,we should pay more attention to active learning and attracting students during class.”
