laurel(桂树):中西方人都将laurels(桂冠)视为“胜利”、“荣誉”和“辉煌成就”的象征。 比如“just so so”和“不过尔尔”;”A No.1”和“天字第一号”等等。

英译汉: A gentleman's agreement 君子协议 The open-door policy "门户开放"政策 A cat has nine lives If you look at a person through a crack in the door,he look flat! When I walk along with two others, they may serve me as my teachers. Cat one's coat according to one's cloth See how the wind blows There are fragrant flowers in every land --there are able men everywhere Fish do not come when water is too clear --one should not demand absolute purity.

(1)Thiswasthelaststraw.I wasveryyoungandtheprospectof working under a woman constituted the ultimate indigni-ty[1 ~2]. (2)He is the last person for such a job(. (3)The sight and sound of our jet planes filled me withspecial longing(. 例如(划线部分的词即用词翻译法):(5)The first bombs missed the target. (6)The decision has to come. (7)But now it is realized that supplies of some of themare limited, and it is even possible to give a reasonable esti-mate of their“expectation of life”,the time it will take to ex-haust all known sources and reserves of these materials[5]。 (8)What is the nature of the scientific attitude, the atti -tude of the man and woman who studies and applies physics, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, medicine or any otherscience[6]?(翻译:学习和应用物理学,生物学,化学,地质学,工程学,医学或其他自然科学的男男女女的人们的科学态度的本质是什么?)
