The US government says it’s arrested more than 300 members of a powerful Mexican drug gang in a major operation across the country. The Attorney General Eric Holder said the arrest took place in 19 states and dealt a significant blow to the group’s supply chain of drugs, weapons and cash into the United States.
In the last 2 days alone, we have seized 3.4 million dollars in US currency and nearly 730 pounds of methamphetamine as well as other narcotics. We’ve also seized close to 400 weapons.
He said the gang known as the Michoacan family had shown an incredible level of sophistication and ruthlessness.
President Obama has welcomed plans by the US Treasury to cut the salaries of top executives at companies that the government bailed out last year. Twenty-five top managers are expected to have their salaries cut by 90% at companies including General Motors and Citi Group. The Federal Reserve has proposed measures discouraging excessive risk as Richard Lister reports from Washington

The world's biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia, is suing its American rival Apple for patent infringement. The legal action covers 10 patents which it says Apple has breached with its massively popular Iphone. Duncan Butter reports.
The Apple Iphone has been a huge success, selling over 34 million units since it was launched 2 years ago. Most users prize it for its innovative technology. But now Nokia is claiming that much of that technology was devised by its research scientists and wants Apple to compensate it financially, hence the lawsuit filed in the United States. Nokia says patents relating to wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption have all been infringed. So far there’s been no response from Apple and it’s not clear how much money Nokia is seeking in compensation
Hundreds of people have demonstrated outside the BBC’s television studios in London to protest against the appearance on a political debate program of the leader of the far-right British National Party Nick Griffin. At one stage, protestors forced their way inside the BBC building and police said they had made 6 arrests. On the program which is due for broadcast shortly, the BNP leader defended his party’s far-right views but his opinions were repeatedly challenged.

For the first time the Sri Lankan government has begun resettling displaced people to areas formerly controlled by the defeated Tamil Tiger rebels. More than 5,500 people left the Vavuniya camp on Thursday for resettlement in former rebel strongholds in Northern Sri Lanka. They are part of a larger group of about 40,000. The government says it aims to complete the process in the next few days. More than a quarter of a million civilians are housed in military-run camps.
The former military ruler of Uruguay, Gregorio Alvarez, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison on
1970s and then as president between 1981 and 1985. The former general was arrested in 2007 on charges of ordering the death of political prisoners.
Scientists say they’ve found a significant flaw in the counting of carbon dioxide emissions which could encourage massive deforestation. Professor, Timothy Searchinger, from Princeton University said if the loophole is not closed, more forests could be cleared in the mistaken belief that bioenergy always helps to reduce emissions.
"Even if we create biofuels or use virtual electricity in a way that's both burning down the world’s forests, we count that as a 100% carbon reduction, rather than what it really is, which is a source of emissions of carbon dioxide. As utilities and oil companies, factories have to reduce their greenhouse gas emission, it gives them a perverse incentive to clear the world’s forests for bioenergy."
The 23-year-old son of the French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said he will give up his attempt to become the head of the body overseeing La Defense, a major business district of Paris. The nomination of Jean Sarkozy had been strongly criticized as nepotistic.

More than 200 Roman Catholic bishops from all over Africa have urged corrupt political leaders there to repent or step down. In an unusually blunt message to their flock, issued from the Vatican, the bishops said that Africa needed leaders who would work for the good of the people. David Willey reports.
The bishops accused Catholic leaders in Africa of having fallen woefully short in their performance in office. The synod calls on such people to repent or quit the public arena and stop causing havoc to the people. The bishops named no names, but the Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe and the Angolan President Eduardo Dos Santos, whose country's recent elections have been marred by fraud, are two prominent Catholic leaders accused by their critics of corruption.
The Iranian government has asked for more time before giving its response to the latest international proposals for solving the deadlock over Iran’s nuclear programme. The United Nations nuclear agency had set today as the deadline for accepting or rejecting the proposed deal. Here’s our Tehran correspondent Jon Leyne.
Iran is giving extremely mixed messages over this important deal and has missed the deadline from the UN to give its verdict. Either Tehran is playing for time, or there are genuine differences within the Iranian government. Under the deal, Iran would allow a large part of the uranium it's already enriched to be shipped out of the country. Then it would be further processed and sent back as fuel for a Tehran research reactor. On Wednesday, the Iranian State TV said Tehran could not accept the key part of the agreement, shipping the nuclear material out of the country. Later, Iran told the UN nuclear watchdog that it was considering the plan favourably, but needed more time to respond.
The Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas has decreed presidential and legislative elections to be held in January. His announcement comes after the failure of Egyptian attempts to broker a reconciliation between President Abbas’s Fatah Party and its rival Hamas movement that controls the Gaza Strip. Mr. Abbas said the elections would take place across the Palestinian territories including Gaza. Hamas has said it disapproves of a January election and correspondents say the date may have to be rescheduled.
On the eve of campaign for Afghanistan’s presidential runoff election, the United States special envoy to the region, Richard Holbrooke, has expressed cautious optimism about the vote.
"It is reasonable to hope that there will be less irregularities this time for several reasons. One, there are only two candidates; two, there is the experience factor; three, the international community including the forces under General McChrystal’s command are going to go all out to help make this a success."
Mr. Holbrooke said his relationship with President Hamid Karzai was fine and if he was reelected in the contest against Abdullah Abdullah, the US looked forward to working with him.

The American State Department says that the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will travel to Pakistan for high-level talks soon, but that the specific date cannot be released for security reasons. The announcement came as at least 24 people were killed and dozens more injured in separate bomb attacks in northern Pakistan on Friday.
New figures have ended expectations that the British economy might be emerging from recession. Instead of showing an improvement as had been predicted, the economy shrank in the three months to the end of September. It makes this the longest recession in Britain since records began more than half a century ago. Lucy Hooker
Economists had predicted a small rise in Britain’s output for the third quarter of the year. But hopes of an end to the recession were dashed with figures showing the value of goods and services sold fell by a little under a half percent between July and September. By contrast, France, Germany and Japan have all returned to growth already in the second quarter while America's economy shrank only very slightly over the summer. But Britain suffered badly both from the problems in the financial sector and the housing price bubble.
A group of rich Germans has launched a petition, calling for higher taxes for the wealthy. They say the extra revenue, which they estimate at 150 billion dollars, could be used to help Germany weather the current economic crisis. Forty-four wealthy Germans have joined the campaign. They say anyone with more than 750,000 dollars in the bank should pay more tax. Germany’s new coalition government has pledged to cut taxes.
Football’s governing body FIFA says it will be doing random medical scans on players in the Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria, which kicks off this weekend. A BBC correspondent says it follows complaints that some countries have been fielding overage players. This time FIFA will be giving the under-17s MRI, that’s magnetic resonance imaging scans, which can tell a person’s age by measuring the fusion of bones.

President Obama has declared the current outbreak of swine flu in the United States a national emergency. The move comes amid rising concern about the spread of the H1N1 virus. Medical officials warned earlier this month of a possible shortage of the swine flu vaccine. James Hodges has compiled this report.
The White House says President Obama’s proclamation of a national emergency will give medical officials more freedom to tackle the virus, allowing them to bypass certain federal requirements when deciding what action to take. Swine flu is now widespread in almost all of the American states, and it's passed epidemic levels in most of them. Health officials say children are being hit hard by the disease. They account for almost 100 of 1,000 people killed in America so far.
Two passenger trains have collided in Egypt. Witnesses say at least 15 people have been killed and more than 20 others have been injured. From Cairo, Yolande Knell sent this report.
It’s understood that one train crashed into another which was stationary on the tracks, close to Al-Ayyat in Giza Governorate to the south of Cairo. Several carriages were badly damaged. Rescue workers are now at the scene trying to remove bodies and the injured from the wreckage. There have been several serious crashes on Egyptian railway lines in recent years. Last year, 44 people were killed in northern Egypt, and back in 2002, at least 360 people were killed in a fire on a crowded passenger train close to the location of the latest crash.
A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a female journalist to 60 lashes for her part in producing a television program, in which a Saudi man broke a major taboo in the deeply conservative country by describing his extra-marital sex life. The program caused a huge scandal when it was shown several months ago on LBC, a Lebanese satellite channel. Serbastin Usher reports.
The original program was part of a series called Red Lines. It examined taboos in the Arab world. Unmarried sex in Saudi Arabia amongst Saudis is one of the biggest. The Saudi man in the show Mazen Abdul Jawad provoked outrage by describing his techniques for meeting and having sex with Saudi women. He later tearfully apologized but was jailed for five years and sentenced to 1,000 lashes. Mr. Abdul Jawad blamed LBC producers for tricking him. The station's offices in Saudi Arabia were closed down and two of its producers - both
Officials in Washington say a North Korean diplomat has made a rare visit to the US and has had talks with an American negotiator. A spokesman for the State Department said the diplomat Ri Gun met the American special envoy for North Korean nuclear disarmament, Sung Kim, in New York. Pyongyang walked out of multiple-lateral talks about its nuclear program six months ago after sanctions were imposed on it for testing nuclear weapons. It said it would only return to negotiations after direct talks with the US.

An American spokesman says President Obama has secured the full support of his French and Russian counterparts over policy towards Iran’s nuclear program. The spokesman says the president phoned both Nicolas Sarkozy and Dmitry Medvedev today, and both leaders backed a proposal deal on Iran endorsed by the UN’s nuclear agency, the IAEA. Tehran says it will respond to the plan this week.
The Pakistani army said that it has captured Kotkai, the hometown of the Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud a week after launching a large scale offensive against the militants’ strongholds in the South Waziristan tribal region. Local officials said three soldiers and four militants were killed in the operation to capture the town. Pakistan’s military spokesman General Athar Abbas said Kotkai had been an important base for militants.
"The place was a stronghold of terrorists with a majority of houses converted into strong bunkers. The town also has a training camp of Qari Hussein who is known as the mentor of suicide bombers. Security forces are in the process of clearing the built-up areas from IEDs, mines and booby traps."
A meeting of about 600 Church of England priests in London has ended with several signalling that they are ready to accept an offer from the Pope to join the Roman Catholic Church. The priests are members of the Forward in Faith group which is unhappy with the Church of England's position on issues such as women bishops and homosexual clergy. However, a BBC correspondent says other Anglicans are desperate to preserve the Church of England's historical role in uniting even Jellico protestants with those more sympathetic to Catholicism.
Pope Benedict has appointed a Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson to one of the most influential posts in the Vatican. Analysts say the appointment to the justice and peace office strengthens Cardinal Turkson’s position as a future papal candidate.

Police in Baghdad say two car bombs have killed more than 130 people and wounded more than 500. It’s the deadliest attack in Iraq since 2007. From Baghdad, Gabriel Gatehouse reports.
Less than a minute after one huge car bomb hit the Justice Ministry, another exploded near the local governor’s office. The bombers struck one of the busiest times of day and in one of the busiest parts of Baghdad, in the heart of the city’s administrative district and right next to the Green Zone. The destruction was immense. Hours after the explosions, rescue workers were still sifting through the rubble and the wreckage, looking for bodies and survivors. Hospitals struggle to deal with the wounded as ambulances brought in more and more casualties as the day went on, so the death toll mounted.
International inspectors have begun their task of examining a uranium enrichment facility in Iran that's raised new suspicions in the West about Tehran’s nuclear program. The Iranians had kept it hidden from view until
The UN inspectors carried out the first what would be 3 days of inspections on the site just north of the holy city of Qom. What they would have seen is a cavern inside the mountain inside the military base. Iran says the plant was meant to be the second enrichment plant, to back up the publicly-declared facility in Natanz. One Iranian legislator said the inspectors’ visit showed that Iran’s nuclear activities were transparent and peaceful. If Iran did have anything to hide, it’s had more than a month to hide it after the plant was first made public. In any case, western intelligence experts believed the plant was only being constructed and had not yet been used to enrich uranium.
An international meeting on climate change has heard that the prospects of saving the world’s coral reefs now appear so bleak that plans have been drawn up to freeze samples to preserve them for the future. The meeting in Denmark took evidence from researchers who say most coral reefs won’t survive even if tough new regulations on the green house gas emissions are put into place. Matt McGrath reports from Copenhagen.
Legislators from 16 major economies have been meeting here in the Danish capital to try to agree the way forward on climate change. One of the issues they have been considering is what to do with coral reefs which make up less than a quarter of one percent of the ocean’s floor. Yet for around 500 million people worldwide, they are a key source of food, income and coastal protection. At this meeting, politicians and scientists have been acknowledging that global emissions of carbon dioxide are rising so fast that we are losing the fight to save coral and the world must develop an alternative plan.
Egyptian authorities investigating a rail crash that left 18 people dead say it was caused by water buffalo on the track. The Egyptian Health Ministry said that the driver of the train heading to Fayoum made a sudden stop when he spotted the animal, the second train then plowed into the back of the first at full speed. The investigation continues.

The United Nations has called on the West African regional group ECOWAS to impose tougher sanctions on Guinea and Niger. UN officials said ECOWAS should also free the assets of the 2 countries’ leaders and impose travel restrictions on them. Niger’s Information Minister said the UN officials were ill-intentioned. Guinea was suspended from ECOWAS in January after a military coup while Niger was suspended last week after President Mamadou Tandja refused to postpone elections.
The Venezuelan President Hugo Chaves has called the Colombian defense minister mentally retarded, the remarks are likely to further strain the already tense relations between the neighboring countries. From Caracas, Will Grand reports.
President Chavez rarely pulls his punches when it comes to criticizing his opponents and on an occasion, the political discourse descends into plain insult. This was the case when the Venezuelan leader responded to a recent statement by the Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva in which he attacked Venezuela for allegedly turning a blind eye to drug trafficking flights taking off from its territory.
He’s mentally retarded, said President Chaves, he must be. President Chaves went on to say that the Colombian government did whatever the United States demanded of them. The background to this conflict lies in a decision by Colombia to grant the US access to seven military bases on its soil.

bowing to pressure to accept a second round, President Karzai said that not holding one round would insult democracy. However, the BBC Kabul correspondent says that many Afghans and some people in western governments still hope the two will do some kind of deal with the winter coming and the Taliban threatening to disrupt the second round.

The Afghan President Hamid Karzai has rejected calls to dismiss the head of the country’s Election Commission ahead of next month’s runoff vote. The demand came from Abdullah Abdullah, Mr. Karzai’s rival in the disputed presidential election last August. Mr. Abdullah said that Azizullah Ludin, who was a former presidential advisor had left the institution with no credibility.
In the United States, President Obama said he wouldn’t hurry into a decision about sending more troops to Afghanistan. He was speaking at a naval base in Florida.
"I will never rush the solemn decision of sending you into harm's way, I won’t risk your lives unless it is absolutely necessary. And if it is necessary, we will back you up to the hilt."
The President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has had talks with the Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai about disagreements over their power-sharing arrangement. But the spokesman for Mr. Tsvangirai said that they'd failed to break the deadlock. Karen Allen reports from neighboring South Africa.

Relations between the partners in the unity government have soured considerably in the past few days. A raid on an MDC office at the weekend is being viewed as a further attempted intimidation by Zanu PF, and the arrest of the chief executives of Zimbabwe’s Association of Non-Governmental Organizations suggests yet further signs of disintegration in the fragile coalition government.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States has rescued more than 50 child prostitutes and arrested 60 pimps in an operation that lasted three days. More than 1,000 FBI agents and police officers carried out raids in dozens of cities across the US. Greg Morsbach reports.
The nationwide sting has resulted in some 700 arrests. Those being detained include adults who befriended children in Internet chat rooms and dozens of pimps, men who forced children into prostitution to make money. The FBI says one of the children rescued from a life in prostitution is just 10 years old. Many of them were recovered in police raids at truck stops, casinos and street corners.
A woman who was 13 when she had sex with the American film director Roman Polanski has asked a court in the US to drop all charges against him. Samantha Geimer’s lawyer says that she just wants to be left alone after all the media attention. In 1978, Mr. Polanski was convicted of unlawful sex but left the US before he could be sentenced.

The prosecution of the War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague has opened its case against the former Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic. Prosecutors called him the supreme commander of the campaign of ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian War of the 1990s. Mr. Karadzic was not in court. He is boycotting the trial because he says he needs more time to prepare his defence. The trial judge, O-Gon Kwon, ruled that the proceedings should not be delayed by his absence.
"Although the accused has duly been informed of the commencement of the trial, he has chosen not to exercise his right to be present. In light of the accused voluntarily and unequivocally waiving his right to be present at these proceedings, the chamber is of the view that this hearing can proceed in his absence."
Mr. Karadzic’s successor as Bosnian Serb President, Biljana Plavsic, has arrived back in Serbia after serving 2/3 of an 11-year sentence for crimes against humanity. Mrs. Plavsic was sentenced by the Hague Tribunal in 2003 after surrendering to the court and pleading guilty to one count as part of a plea bargain. Mrs. Plavsic, who is now 79, was released early for good behaviour.
A former French interior minister, Charles Pasqua, has been jailed for a year for his part in an illegal shipment of arms to Angola in the 1990s, during the country’s civil war. A son of the former French president Francois Mitterrand, Jean-Christophe Mitterrand, was given a suspended sentence and fined over half a million dollars in the same case. Mr. Pasqua is to appeal. Alex Sanford reports from Paris.
The 82-year-old former interior minister, who wasn’t in court, was given a three-year jail sentence with two suspended and fined. Jean-Christophe Mitterrand, an advisor on African affairs when his father was president, was given a two-year suspended sentence for taking kickbacks of more than two million dollars. In the deal, tanks, warships, helicopters and anti-personnel mines were shipped to Angola from Eastern Europe in sales worth nearly 800 million dollars.
Prosecutors in the United States have charged two men with conspiring to commit acts of terror on overseas targets, including a Danish newspaper at the centre of a controversy four years ago over cartoons it published of the Prophet Mohammad. The two men, David Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana, live in the Chicago area. Jonathan Beale reports.
David Headley was arrested earlier this month by FBI agents as he was preparing to travel to Pakistan.

Eight American soldiers have been killed in bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan, making October the deadliest for US forces since the war against the Taliban started eight years ago. Fifty-five soldiers have died this month either in combats or in accidents. President Obama is currently considering a request from a senior American general in Afghanistan to send an extra 40,000 soldiers there.
Police in India have taken control of a passenger train which has been stopped and stormed by hundreds of militia members linked to Maoist insurgents. The train, the Rajdhani Express, was attacked in a remote jungle area of West Bangle on a journey from Delhi. The authorities are now making arrangements to get the hundreds of stranded passengers back to Delhi.
An international conference is taking place in Nepal with the aim of saving the tiger from extinction. Participants of the conference, which is backed by the World Bank, will discuss strategies for tiger conservation. Sarah Rainsford reports.
Tiger hunting is already illegal worldwide and the trade in tiger parts is banned by dozens of countries. But the tiger population is still declining. With fewer than 4,000 of the big cats still left in the wild, the case of protecting them is urgent. The prime minister of Nepal says the main threats today are from the loss of habitat and from poaching and he’s calling for collective international action to prevent the tiger population from dying out.
And the New York Supreme Court has ruled that the most prestigious event in sailing, the America’s Cup, cannot be held in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE was chosen as the venue by the defending champions, the Swiss team Alinghi. But the US Challenge Oracle argued that the venue was unsafe because it’s close to Iran and Alinghi had broken the rules by choosing it. The court agreed and ruled the next challenge must take place either in the southern hemisphere or in the Spanish port of Valencia, where the last settled races were held in 2007.

The US government says the attack on a United Nations guesthouse in Afghanistan would not succeed in derailing the second round of the presidential election in 10 days time. Five UN workers and three local staff were killed when militants stormed the building in the capital Kabul. The Taliban said it was the first step in their campaign to disrupt the vote. A spokesman for the State Department Ian Kelly had this assessment of the situation in Afghanistan.
This is all part of an overall campaign to intimidate the Afghan people, to try and discourage them from exercising their democratic rights. It is also a way to try and discourage their international supporters. If that is their purpose here, to try and discourage us and intimidate us, it’s not going to work.”
More than 90 people were killed when a huge car bomb tore through the main market in the city of Peshawar in northwest Pakistan. More than 200 people were injured. The attack took place as the market was thronged with morning shoppers. Most of the victims were women and children. Local people say a nearby mosque was brought down along with several other buildings. Mark Dummett reports from Islamabad.
This has been an especially bloody month and Peshawar has been especially badly hit. Militants have launched a wave of attacks in response to a major army operation against their strongholds on the Afghan border. The army says it is going after the man it holds responsible for the bombings and that it is making progress. The militants meanwhile are sending out a very clear message that they haven’t been defeated and that they can fight back.
The Prime Minister of Somalia Omar Sharmarke says his government will eradicate piracy off its coast within the next two years. Here is Mary Harper from our Africa desk.
Mr Sharmarke told the BBC that his government lacked the resources to deal with piracy but was seeking assistance from abroad. He’s currently in Britain seeking help. He said he’d eradicate piracy through a civil affairs and information campaign, backed by military force. But given that the government only controls the few districts of the capital, Mogadishu, it is difficult to imagine how it will deal with the pirates, who operate in areas outside government control.

The UN special investigator on torture, Manfred Nowak, is reported to have been stopped at Harare airport as he was trying to enter Zimbabwe. Mr. Nowak told the BBC that officials were refusing to allow him to enter despite him having a written invitation from Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. The trip had originally been arranged as a week-long fact-finding mission but it was blocked at the last minute by the Zimbabwe Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Nowak believes he may be forced to fly back to South Africa on Thursday.

State police in Bosnia have arrested three former Serb policemen suspected of genocide during the Bosnian war. According to police reports, the three men were part of the Bosnian Serb forces, who overran the UN protected enclave of Srebrenica in July 1995 and then took part in the summary execution of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys.
Workers began in southern Spain to excavate a mass grave which may contain the remains of the dramatist and poet Federico Garcia Lorca. Lorca, a left-wing sympathizer, was shot dead in 1936 by supporters of General Franco during the Spanish Civil War. The grave is being excavated at the request of another victim’s family.
Senior public officials in Kenya have until today to give up their luxurious official cars and exchange them for smaller ones. They are being told to replace their 4×4s and Mercedes limousines with more modest Volkswagens as part of a government economy drive. From Nairobi, Johanna Fisher.
Kenya’s bloated and much criticized government wants to show it is in touch with the economic reality. So that was supposed to mean the end of the road for the Mercedes Benz, for years the ministerial vehicle of choice. In June, Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta announced in his budget that government cars would have their engine sizes capped at 1,800 cc, a measure designed to more than halve fuel and maintenance costs. 130 of the more modest Volkswagen Passats were bought. But despite a deadline of Wednesday for the trade down, ministers appear to be in no hurry to comply.
Bangladesh has created its first ever national plan to conserve the Royal Bengal tiger. The Tiger Action Plan aims to save an estimated 200 or 300 tigers in the Sandarbans, an area of mangrove forests in the south of the country. The forest’s home to one of the world’s biggest remaining tiger populations.

European Union leaders meeting in Brussels are split over how much money to offer developing nations to cope with climate change ahead of United Nations conference on the issue in Copenhagen in December. The Swedish prime minister, who is chairing the meeting, called on EU leaders to pledge a fixed amount to encourage other rich nations such as the United States and Japan to do the same. But Poland’s Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski told the BBC a third of EU member states thought the proposals were unfair

The deal could secure the backing of Czech President Vaclav Klaus who has yet to sign the treaty by giving the Czech Republic an opt-out from the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights, similar to one already granted to Britain and Poland.
The Russian-operated ship which mysteriously disappeared for three weeks in the summer has been handed over to Malta where the ship is registered. The ship, the Arctic Sea, disappeared on its way from Finland to Algeria with the cargo of timber and was eventually found off the Cape Verde islands. The Russian authorities say it was hijacked by pirates. Madeleine Morris has more.
Questions and conspiracies over the Arctic Sea still abound. The most gripping theory is that the vessel was carrying weapons to Iran and the alleged piracy incident was to cover up an arms deal gone sour. Russia has always strongly denied the ship was carrying weapons and the theory has numerous other flaws. But with the crew of the ship under a strict gagging order and no details of the investigation yet revealed, speculation is still rife.

Security officials said troops were closing in on a stronghold of Uzbek fighters, ally to the Pakistani Taliban near Kani Guram. But there is no independent confirmation.
The man credited with creating the internet exactly 40 years ago says he didn’t expect to develop a dark side. In a speech marking the anniversary, Professor Leonard Kleinrock said the culture in the early days was one of trust, but a dark side had grown in the form of computer attacks, identity theft and fraud. He said in hindsight he and his team should have installed stronger protection against this.
The Indian child stars of the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire are in danger of losing the money from a trust fund set up on their behalf because they are missing too much school. The trust administrator Noshir Dadrawala blamed the children’s busy schedule. The children’s parents have promised to make sure the young stars attend school from now on.

European Union leaders have ended a summit with an agreement to contribute to the huge sums required by developing countries to combat climate change. The EU estimates that governments worldwide would need to fund as much as 74 billion dollars a year by 2020. From the summit in Brussels, Jonny Dymond reports.
This summit was never going to agree on an overall figure that Europe would put on the table at Copenhagen. Diplomats all agreed that that would be a foolish negotiating tactic, but there the agreement ended. Britain, the Swedes and the European Commission wanted some indicative figure to take to Copenhagen; others wanted no figures at all. Poorer EU states wanted to know whether there was going to be help from richer ones. In the end compromise was found. In the summit conclusions, the EU suggests a figure of between 32 and 74 billion dollars for the total annual global public contribution to developing nations by the year 2020.
Indians living deep inside the Amazon Rainforest have found the survivors of a plane which crashed on Thursday. Military aircraft with 11 people on board came down in northwestern Brazil. Our correspondent Gary Duffy reports from Sao Paulo.
The single-engine Cessna plane was carrying health officials from the government agency which looks after the welfare of indigenous tribes. The Brazilian authorities said the plane along with several surviving passengers and crew was found deep in the rainforest by members of the Matis tribe. The survivors were to be taken by helicopter to a nearby airport, where they were to be met by relatives. The plane came down in one of the largest Indian reservations in the country, which is home to several tribes, some of which have had only limited contact with the outside world.
Congress in Honduras has been handed an agreement which could result in a return of the ousted President Manuel Zelaya. The document has been signed by representatives from Mr. Zelaya's team and his political rival, the interim President Roberto Micheletti. It sends out plans for the power-sharing government with presidential elections to go ahead its plan in November.
The British-based oil company BP has been fined a record 87 million dollars by safety regulators in the United States. They said BP had failed to correct safety hazards at a refinery in Texas, where 15 people died in an explosion four years ago. Here's Mark Gregory.
A six-month investigation by the US regulator found BP had failed to address safety concerns raised by the refinery explosion. Inspectors uncovered hundreds of violations of an agreement the company had signed to deal with the hazards. BP said it was disappointed by the regulator's decision to impose a record fine. The company has previously paid 50 million dollars in penalties to settle a criminal investigation into the explosion and two billion dollars to compensate victims.

Pirates in Somalia have issued a ransom demand of seven million dollars for the release of a British couple kidnapped from their yacht off the coast of East Africa. From Nairobi, Will Ross reports.
The pirates have been holding discussions for several hours in Harardhere on the Somali coast. They were trying to agree how much money they wanted for the release of Paul and Rachel Chandler. Then one of the pirates made a phone call to the BBC. He said the ransom had been set at seven million dollars. In previous cases, the pirates have begun negotiating with an extremely high figure and then settled for far less. It's not clear who is likely to pay. Relatives say the Chandlers, who have both retired in their 50s, are not wealthy. And while the British government is involved in efforts to secure their release, it has a policy of not paying ransom.
United Nations refugee agency says that an unknown number of internal refugees in Yemen have been killed or wounded during an exchange of fire between government forces and Shiite rebels in the north of the country. The UNHCR says the incident happened at Al Sam camp on the outskirts of the regional capital, Saada. Its sources say a rocket or mortar landed in the camp, where some 500 people fleeing the fighting have taken refuge. Women and children were among the victims.
The Philippines has been struck by a powerful typhoon, the fourth storm hit the country in less than a month. It's made landfall in the eastern part of the country, and is now spinning towards the capital Manila, where some districts are still submerged after the typhoons which struck in early October.
A 13-year-old Dutch girl has been stopped by a court from sailing around the world on her own. Laura Dekker wants to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, but the judge ruled she was too young to make the trip even though her parents had given their support. She's been put into the care of child care services until her school year ends in July.
