Water

Water is everywhere on our earth. It is in every living thing. It is in the air. It runs through mountains and valleys. It forms lakes, rivers and even oceans.

Water is extremely important to our life. We take in water every day by drinking it or eating food containing water. Without water we simply cannot live. Water can also be used to wash clothes and other things. Unfortunately, our water resources are seriously polluted with waste products from factories.

Therefore, we must take effective measures to stop water pollution. The most important thing is to educate people to realize the importance of the protection of our environment. Factories should stop putting poisonous products into rivers or into the sea. Besides, we have to start cleaning our water resources. Man has to work with nature --- not against it.

Food is essential to our lives. Food provides us what our bodies need for existence, such as protein, sugar, calcium and so on. We must eat to supply the energy and nutrition needed for our growth. Food is as vital to our bodies as power is for machines.

Farming technology has been developed rapidly. Because of the importance of food to our lives, much effort has been made to develop agricultural machinery to raise the yielding. Now we have a lot of machinery such as tractors and combines. In particular, the fertilizer industry has contributed a lotto the high output of agriculture. Now farmers are becoming less and less dependent on climate for farming. However, food problems have not been solved today. Some people in the world are still suffering a great shortage of food. The world population is still rising sharply, what is worse, people are destroying more and more farm land for buildings and city expansion. There exist various solutions to the problem. The main ones involve more agricultural investment for farming technology, birth control and protection of farm land.

Test 8

Communication Instruments

Communication instruments have been playing an important role in the busy world of today. Of them all, three kinds are most commonly used.

First, the most widely-used and the most conventional one is mail, by which people use written words to exchange information. Although it is not so fast as other types, mail is the cheapest means of communication to convey ideas and thoughts, in every detail. Then comes a telephone, which enables people to communicate conveniently without restrictions of time and place. With the development of modern science and technology, computers have become a more recent kind of communication instrument. Communication with computers is fast and easy. Electronic mail is the best instance.

Owing to their peculiarities, these three sorts of communication instruments have won millions of people respectively. They help to bring people all over the world closer.

Test 9

Opportunity and Success

Opportunities do not come often. They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed.

Therefore, it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care.

When an opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you mean to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of tour ambitions, you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will make no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you.

The difference between a man who succeeds and one who does not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always males much preparation to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by.

Test 10

How to Study

There is a lot of misunderstanding about studying. Most students have not been taught the principles behind really effective working. Here is a graph showing the amount a person learns against the number of hours he works in a day. If he does not do any work, he learns nothing (point 0). If he does an hour’s work, he learns a certain amount (point 1). If he does two hours’ work he learns about twice as much (point 2). If he does more work, he’ll learn still more (point 3). Now if he tries to do more than 23 hours’ work in 24 hours, he’ll be so exhausted that he will hardly remember anything.

Now whatever the exact shape of this curve, it must have a crest. Point X is the very maximum anyone can learn in the day, and this represents the optimum, the best amount of work to do. It is the best possible compromise between adequate time at the books and fatigue. If you press yourself to work past the optimum, you can only get on this downward slope and achieve less than the best, and then get exhausted and lose your power of concentration.

So when you’ve finished your optimum hour, you must stop. You must go out and do something else actively but work.

The impact of the Internet on interpersonal communication 要求:commenting on "Dad:Hi sweetie, how was school, today? Daughter: You can read all about it on my blog, Dad" The impact of the Internet on interpersonal communication In contemporary society, our life is filled with a variety of anecdotes or stories, and the following is no exception: "Dad:Hi sweetie, how was school, today? Daughter: You can read all about it on my blog, Dad." Funny as it seems, this conversation can be naturally associated with the impacts of Internet on our life: In an era of Internet, the time for interpersonal communication is impaired by online chats or blogs. Apparently, the impacts of the Internet on interpersonal communication are diverse. For one thing, as a vital invention, Internet brings great convenience to our communication, eliminates the barrier of distance, and helps humans to keep in touch wherever and whenever. For another, it is Internet that does not enables family members, friends or classmates to communicate more in a face-to-face way. One case in point is that youngsters may spend hours chatting with acquaintances through QQ or MSN, but rarely do they talk with other face to face. Unfortunately, it we let this trend to continue as it is, the interpersonal relationship will, definitely, become alienated. To my understanding, it is advisable for people to communicate more with their families, friends and acquaintances in real life instead of merely through the Internet. Do bear in mind: Internet is just a tool. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled The Way to Success by commenting on Abraham Lincoln s famous remark, "Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend, the first four sharpening the axe."

例1 ____________(将领你们去参观我们的新车间)by the secretary. 译文:Y ou will be shown our new workshop. The secretary will show you our new workshop。 例2 Y ou __________(我们期待你能组织贸易推广活动)this time. 译文:are expected to organize the trade publicity campaigns. Y ou are expected to organize the trade publicity campaigns this time. 处理后的英文译句往往带有know,see,find,say,suppose,estimate,report,suggest,stress,consider,expect,admit,point,understand 等动词。 If one or more electrons are removed, the atom is said/believed/thought to be positively charged. All kinds of measures are taken to prevent corrosion. People have taken all kinds of measures to prevent corrosion。也可以用被动语态来翻译--All kinds of measures are taken to prevent corrosion。

Occasional self-medication has always been part of normal living. The making and selling of drugs have a long history and are closely linked, like medical practice itself, with the belief in magic. Only during the last hundred years or so has the development of scientific techniques made it possible for some of the causes of symptoms to be understood, so that more accurate diagnosis has become possible. The doctor is now able to follow up the correct diagnosis of many illnesses with specific treatment of their causes. In many other illnesses, of which the causes remain unknown, it is still limited, like the unqualified prescriber, to the treatment of symptoms. The doctor is trained to decide when to treat symptoms only and when to attack the cause: this is the essential difference between medical prescribing and self-medication. The advance of technology has brought about much progress in some fields of medicine, including the development of scientific drug therapy. In many countries public health organization is improving and people's nutritional standards have risen. Parallel with such beneficial trends have two adverse effects. One is the use of high-pressure advertising by the pharmaceutical industry, which has tended to influence both patients and doctors and has led to the overuse of drugs generally. The other is the emergence of the sedentary society with its faulty ways of life: lack of exercise, over-eating, unsuitable eating, insufficient sleep, excessive smoking and drinking. People with disorders arising from faulty habits such as these, as well as from unhappy human relationships, often resort to self-medication and so add the taking of pharmaceuticals to the list. Advertisers go to great lengths to catch this market. Clever advertising, aimed at chronic sufferers who will try anything because doctors have not been able to cure them, can induce such faith in a preparation, particularly if steeply priced, that it will produce—by suggestion—a very real effect in some people. Advertisements are also aimed at people suffering from mild complaints such as simple colds and coughs, which clear up by themselves within a short time. These are the main reasons why laxatives, indigestion remedies, painkillers, tonics, vitamin and iron tablets and many other preparations are found in quantity in many households. It is doubtful whether taking these things ever improves a person's health; it may even make it worse. Worse because the preparation may contain unsuitable ingredients; worse because the taker may become dependent on them; worse because they might be taken in excess; worse because they may cause poisoning, and worse of all because symptoms of some serious underlying cause may be masked and therefore medical help may not be sought. 1. The first paragraph is intended to ________. [A] suggest that self-medication has a long history [B] define what diagnosis means exactly [C] praise doctors for their expertise [D] tell the symptoms from the causes

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay based on the picture below. You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then give your comments. Write your essay on Answer Sheet 1. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. In the picture above, two men shake hands with both saying “it’s my fault”. We can infer that their cooperation will be continued and connections be closer after they acknowledge their mistakes actively. The inference is grounded in the following two points. Firstly, acknowledging our mistakes actively represents a kind of attitude which indicates that we have realized the mistakes and we will be responsible for it. Such an attitude can, to some extent, mitigate the consequences our mistakes have incurred. Secondly, when we say “sorry, it’s my fault” to our partners or to the person involved with our mistakes, they will forget the harm or loss our mistakes bring them and will continue cooperation and connection with us because they regard that we can shoulder the responsibility. Otherwise, we will leave a bad impression on them. All in all, it is not embarrassed to acknowledge our mistakes. Instead, acknowledging our mistakes actively reflects our responsible attitude and can leave a good impressions on others.

The Way to Success First essay—stream of thought type The Way to Success "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." And here comes our question, what is the way to success? A strong will and great efforts are the most essential two keys to the door of success. Why do people fail to achieve their goal? The reason is that most of them give up halfway due to their lack of a strong will once they encounter any difficulty. A man of a strong will always sticks to his cause no matter how tough it might be. Would Thomas Edison be such a great man in history if he had done nothing but possessing a strong will? We are all familiar with his story that he had tried one thousand kinds of materials before he finally made his great bulb light up. Without hard effort, Edison might have been a nobody. Without efforts, no one can succeed. To sum up, a strong will and great efforts can help one open up the way to success. Where there is a will with efforts, there is a way. Nothing succeeds without a strong will遥相呼应,大同小异,都是在讨论成功这一话题。

The Present Is the Most Important Shams and delusions are esteemed for soundest truths, while reality is fabulous. If men would steadily observe realities only, and not allow themselves to be deluded, life, to compare it with such things as we know, would be like a fairy tale and the Ara bian Nights’ Entertainments. If we respected only what is inevitable and has a right to be , music and poetry would resound along the streets. When we are unhurried and wise, we perceive that only great and worthy things have any permanent and absolute existence, --that petty fears and petty pleasure are but the shadow of reality. This is always exhilarating and sublime. By closing the eyes and slumbering, by consenting to be deceived by shows, men establish and confirm their daily life of routine and habit everywhere, which still is built on purely illusory foundation. Children, who play life, discern its true law and relations more clearly than men, who fail to live worthily, but who think that they are wiser by experience, that is, by failure. I have read in a Hindoo book, that “there was a king’s son, who, being expelled in infancy from his native city, was brought up by a forester, and, growing up to maturity in that state, imagined himself to belong to the barbarous race with which be lived. One of his father’s ministers having discovered him, revealed to him what he was, and the misconception of his character was removed, and he knew himself to be a prince. So soul, from the circumstances in which it is placed, mistakes its own character, until the
