Unit Two

Part A

Jackie Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1954. his parents were very poor at that time. They couldn’t even afford to pay the hospital bills. But they decided to borrow some money so they could keep the baby. When he was seven, young Jackie was sent to a very strict boarding school, the Chinese Opera Research Institute, where he was trained in singing, acrobatics, martial arts and mime. When Jackie left school at the age of seventeen he became a movie stuntman, performing very exciting and often dangerous acts for actors in movies. And he appeared with Bruce Lee in several kung-fu movies, too. But Jackie Chan’s breakthrough came in 1978 when he made the movie Snake in Eagle’s Shadow. What he did was that he combined comedy and dangerous stunts, and it was very appealing to the audience. The film was a big hit in Hong Kong. Jackie’s fame has since spread all over the world, making him one of the world’s most popular stars.

Part B

Conversation 1:

The person I admire most

M can you think of a person you admire

W a person I admire? Hmm. Yes, I think the person I admire most is Steven Hawking.

M isn’t he the professor at Cambridge with motor neuron disease?

W that is right he’s spent most of his life fighting the disease. He found out that he’d got it when he was a student. He was at the time only about 20.

M goodness. What did he do then?

W well, he stopped wasting time. And he started applying himself to his studies. He knew that he risked dying young, but he became a leading cosmologist.

M where have I heard of him? I know nothing about cosmology.

W he wrote a book about it for the average person. In fact I remember seeing it on your bookshelves.

M on, right. A brief history of time, is that it?

W yes, it was a really bestseller, mostly to people who put it on the shelves and did not read it.

M yeh. How is he now?

W he is in his sixties, I think. He’s succeeded in living far longer than anyone expected him to.

M but what kind of life can you have with a diseases like that?

W he’s managed to lead a fairly normal life. He has married twice and has three children and a grandchild now. I think he needs to use a computer for almost everything now, you know, eating, speaking, writing…

M mmm, in a way. He considers himself lucky. You see, despite his disability, he is recognized as one of the greatest minds of our time.

Q1: what is the problem relationship between the man and the woman?

Q2: what did Steven do after he found out that he had a terrible disease?

Q3: what kind of life has Steven led?

Q4: what can you learn about the man?

Coversation2:

Interview with a celebrity

W could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

M sure.

W first of all, where were you born?

M I was born in London, but I am living in Madrid now.

W on, really? How long have you been there?

M not long. I moved from London with my two daughters about six months ago.

W are you happy there?

M yeah, very happy. We love the outdoor life. Also, my mother is Spanish.

W and what do you do in your free time?

M I love reading. Sometimes I feel like wanting to buy every book in the bookstore. I am crazy about books. And I’m a fast reader.

W do you ever feel the need to take a break so you can recharge your batteries?

M all the time. There is always so much to learn. Going awy helps.

W you obviously traveled a lot, too. What is your favorite place in the world?

M that is a difficult question because I’ve been to so many amazing places, but I think Hawaii is my favorite. The children love it there too.

W all of us are concerned with what kind of world our kids are going to live in. how do you give your children a semblance of a normal life?

M by living a normal life.

W but as a super star, you live at a level that is different from most people.

M to a degree, yes. But we’ve all got to figure out how to raise our kids to be happy, responsible people.

W one last question. What else do you want to do in your life?

M oh, there is so much I want to do. I feel a lot of personal responsibility because of how much I’ve been blessed. I do volunteer work for Children’s Fund. I do a lot of fund-raising events for them. And I look forward to creating opportunities for young people.

Q1: what does the man do?

Q2: what seems to be the most problem reason that the man and his family are happy in Madrid? Q3: what is true about the man?

Q4: what can you infer from the interview?

Part D

Celion Dion

Celion Dion is one of the biggest international stars in the pop music history. Born into a working class family in Quebec, Canada, Dion grew up with her thirteen siblings in an environment without much material comfort. However, the Dion family was always filled with love and music. Her parents and one of her brothers were important to her in the early

development of her singing career.

Dion began singing in her parents’ piano bar when she was just 5 years old. By the age of 12 ahe had written one of her first songs ― it was only a dream‖. With the help of her mother and brother she made a recording of that song and sent it off to Rene Angelil, who later became her manager and husband. When she was 18 Dion saw Michael Jackson on TV and she told Angelil that she wanted to be a star like Jackson.

In 1990 her real breakthrough came she was selected by Disney to sing the theme song of the movie ―beauty and the beast‖. The song went to No.1 in the charts and won both a Grammy and an Academy award. The year of 1996 brought her another honor: she was asked to perform at the opening ceremonies of the Atlantic Olympics. And in 1997 she recorded ― my heart will go on‖, the theme song of the movie Titanic. The song could be heard everywhere as Titanic fever swept the world.

After taking a career break in 1999 to enjoy family life, and to care for her husband who had been diagnosed with throat cancer, Dion returned to the music scene in 2002 with the album A New Day Has Come, with world wide sales reaching over twelve million copies. From 2003 to the present, she has been appearing five nights a week in a three-year, 600-show in Las Vegas.

Unit 3 Advertising

Part A

Exercise 1

I was planning to buy a digital camera last year, but none of the cameras on the market fulfilled my criteria. After lots of hunting for the right camera I finally found the one that was the best. The Canon A95 turns out to be everything you can want of a camera. It is really amazin g. Firstly, it’s simple to use. Secondly, it can create images of true color and terrific quality –even in your biggest prints. And thirdly, it can capture beautiful pictures and satisfy the needs of more experienced users.

Exercise 2

1.Advertising is a way of informing people of something. This can range from telling them a

product for sale, or a service, or urging them to do something, or even making someone’s name known to the public.

2.Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers to buy a certain product, but it does not force

them to buy the product. Consumers still control the final buying decision.

Part B

A Passage: Successful Advertising

One of the keys to successful advertising is to catch the interest of readers. In your busy life, there is little time to read every page in front of you, so you have to be very selective. Being aware of this, advertisers go to great lengths to arouse your curiosity in what they have to say. You should know when advertisers are trying to catch your interest so that you keep in mind that they are

attempting to influence you.

Advertisers always have an intended audience targeted for their messages –men, women, or children of specific ages, from various ethnic groups, and with certain interests. It is important that you know to whom an advertisement is designed to appeal so that you can decide whether or not you should spend your time giving serious consideration to what it has to say.

Obviously the whole point of a given advertisement is to get you to purchase a product, take a certain action, or think in a certain way. An effective advertisement is very specific about the benefit to readers as a result of their buying, doing, or thinking whatever is being urged by the advertisement. It is extremely important that you recognize the benefit stressed by an advertisement so that you can make a sound decision as to whether or not to follow its advice.

A Conversation: We Were Born to Help You Do It Better

Joyce Dad!

Father Yes? What’s the matter, Joyce?

Joyce I’m wondering if I should buy a pair of tennis shoes. I’m going to join the tennis club in school.

Father Why not? It’s good that you finally play sports.

Joyce But I’d like to have Adidas.

Father Adidas? It’s too expensive. They are for professional athletes.

Joyce But all the guys in the school tennis team are wearing Adidas, boys as well as girls. Father But none of us has ever had Adidas and we used to play quite OK.

Joyce Here is an ad about Adidas. Can I read it to you?

Father Go ahead.

Joyce ―Over fifty-five years ago, Adidas gave birth to a new idea in sports shoes. And the people who wear our shoes have been running and winning ever since. In fact, Adidas

has helped them set over 400 world records in track and field alone.‖

Father Nonsense! The players have to go through a lot of hard training and practice. It has nothing to do with the shoes. They may be comfortable, but…

Joyce You’re right, Dad. The ad goes on to say, ―You’re born to run. And we were born to HELP YOU DO IT BETTER‖.

Father Hmm. It ma y be good for running, but you don’t run.

Joyce Listen, Dad. The ad says, ―… Maybe that’s why more and more football, soccer, basketball and tennis‖ see? ―TENNIS players are turning to Adidas. They know that,

whatever their game, they can rely on Adidas workmanship and quality in every

product we make.‖

Father OK, OK, dear. I know Adidas is good. But how much is a pair of your shoes?

Joyce You don’t have to worry about that, Dad. I’ve saved some money since last Christmas.

I just want to hear your opinion.

Father That’s good.

Part D Home Listening

Passage 1 Advertisements and Critical Thinking

Would you rush right out to a shop and buy every product recommended in its advertisement? One hopes not! At the very least, you would first want to know if the advertisement is referring to the

lowest prices ever at the shop or at all stores that sell those items. Furthermore, you would wonder how the shop can prove to customers that the prices are indeed the lowest ever. Finally, you would be interested in what the guarantee involves or what the store is prepared to do under the terms of its guarantee.

As a critical thinker, you are very aware of the importance of evaluating what you see, hear, and read so that you are in a better position to make the best possible decisions. This is particularly important when dealing with advertisements, which are designed specifically to influence your thinking, which of course in turn has an effect on your purchasing, your political and philosophical decisions. In fact, in tod ay’s world, you are overwhelmed with advertisements which attempt to persuade you to buy something, do something, or think something. You are urged to buy certain products, including foods, drinks, automobiles and clothing; to take advantage of a particular service, such as cleaning, or pest control; to attend social affairs, workshops, or classes. There is no end to the stream of advertisements, all designed to sell you something.

If you do not pick and choose among the products, services, and ideas pushed by advertisers, you could soon go broke. You can avoid those unattractive possibilities by taking the time to think critically about advertisements so that you can evaluate them before acting. In short, critical thinking can help you sift through all the information thrown your way.

Passage 2 How to Advertise for a Bank?

Do you know how to advertise for a bank? If you ask people about the functions of a bank, they would probably say that the bank is where you can deposit money and cash a check. But it’s much more than these. And we have to tell people this in our advertisement.

There are several things to think about for a bank advertisement. The first problem is to decide who should be our audience. Should our advertisement be aimed at adults with full employment only? Or should it also appeal to students, housewives, retired workers, or even children? It is a good idea to address the largest possible audience. If we introduce the name of our bank to children they will never forget it.

The next question is how to attract people of different social groups to our bank. The usual gimmick is to offer gifts. For example, portable radios or T-shirts for the young, and gold pens for business executives. That’s always works. But what do we give to our best customers? That’s another question. What about leather diaries, for example?

Banks are very competitive. We have to think of something new to offer our customers. That’s the third problem. Ours is one of the first banks to have drive-in service and to open on Saturdays, but now many banks do. Most banks also offer a variety of checking and savings accounts and a full range of investment plans to suit the needs of their customers, as well as the 24 hour ATM banking which makes it much faster and easier for customers to withdraw cash or do other things. To attract more customers to our bank, it is essential that we have something that no other bank offers.

The last problem is where to put the advertisement, on television, of course, but what about journals and newspapers? Which ones are more suitable? And when and how often? There are also questions we have to ask ourselves about advertising for a bank.

Unit Four Culture

Part A

Exercise 1

1.M: What can I do for you, madam?

W: I’d like to bring some flowers to my friend. Uh… about ten, I guess

M: I don’t think you should give ten flowers, madam. In Italy even numbers – 2,4,6,8 are bad luck.

W: Even numbers are bad luck? OK, I’ll take flowers then.

Q: How many flowers will the woman bring to her friend?

2.M: We’re meeting Mr. and Mrs. Mertz for dinner. Maybe I should bring flowers or

something …Yeah, I’ll pick up some red roses.

W: Don’t bring roses. In Switzerland they could be a symbol of love and romance.

M: Oh, thank you for reminding me of that.

W: I think candy or chocolate might be better.

Q: What will the man probably bring to his Swiss friends?

3.W: You said you’re going to Japan?

M: Yeah. I’m thinking of taking some pens to my old classmate. He likes good quality pens W: Don’t give a set of four pens – in fact d on’t give four of anything.

M: Why not?

W: The Japanese word for ―four‖ sound like the word for death

M: Thanks for telling me. I’ll take a pen and pencil set then

W: That’s good choice.

Q: What gift will the man take to his Japanese friend?

Exercise 2

1.In Japan if you receive a gift, take it with both hands and open it later in private.

2.In Cuba if you receive a gift, open it right away while the other person is watching

3.In the Republic of Korea it is good manner to refuse a gift at first –people have to be

persuaded to accept one.

Part B

What Are Good Manners?

People in different countries have different standards for good manners. Before entering a house in some Asian countries it is necessary to take off one’s shoes. In European countries even though shoes sometimes become very muddy, this is not done. A guest in a Chinese house never finishes a drink. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In a Malay house, a guest always leaves a little food. In England, a guest always finishes a drink or eats up his food show that he has enjoyed it.

Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do no matter whether he is an oriental or a westerner.

He never laughs at people when they are in trouble. Instead, he tries to help them. He is always kind whether to people or to animals. When he is waiting for a bus, he takes his turn and never pushes to the front of the line. In the bus, he gives his seat to an old person, or a disabled

person or a lady who is standing. When talking to people, he never tells heavy people they are fat, but says that they are losing weight, for the knows everyone is weight conscious and wants to be thin. He never asks people, women in particular, their age. Everyone wants to be young. If he is invited to a dinner party at seven, he is sure to be there by seven, knowing how people respect time and expect everyone to be ―on time‖. If he smokes, he never lights his cigarette before getting the permission from people around them.

He says ―Please‖ when making a request and ―Thank you‖ when he receives something. He stands up when speaking to a lady or an older person, and he does not sit down until the other person is seated.

Tea Ceremony in Japan

The tea ceremony in Japan, or Chanoyu, is a special form of entertainment for distinguished guests. The tradition started in the 15th century and has existed for about 600 years, and it has very special and strict rules that must be followed.

There are many different kinds of tea ceremonies, from the informal to the quite formal. But all Chanoyu ceremonies have one thing in common, that is, guests are invited to enjoy a moment of peace and calm.

Traditionally a Chanoyu ceremony takes place in a tea room which is usually not very big. The guests take off their street shoes and put on special bamboo shoes. Then they cross a beautiful garden. They stop for a moment at a rock water basin, where they wash their hands. Then they enter the tea room through a small low door.

The inside of the tea room is simple but beautiful. The room is not furnished at all. The floor is covered with a kind of bamboo mats which are called ―tatami‖. There are flowers and some traditional decorations like tea set of ancient times, landscape painting, national costumes, etc. The guests sit in the traditional way, on their knees on the floor. In formal ceremonies, small cakes are also served. The tea master, a man or a woman, follows a certain procedure in making the tea and then serves it to the guests in turn, starting from the most distinguished. The guests are not supposed to drink the tea at one go. They should sip bit by bit and at the same time appreciate the designs of the bowl and the dish. From time to time the host and the guests would bow to each other. When the guests finally leave the tea room, put on their shoes and leave the house, they feel happy and peaceful.

Part D

Mind Your Manners

Steve: So, Sophie, is this your first visit to the United States?

Sophie:Yes, it is. It’s all a bit confusing. Some friends invited me to their homes for dinner next week. What should I take as a gift?

Steve: Well, it’s probably best to take some flowers – or maybe a small gift, like something typical from your country.

Sophie: Yes, in France, flowers are a good idea, too. Or some really good chocolates. And in France, it is polite to arrive a little early. Is it the same here?

Steve: In the U.S. we don’t arrive exactly on time, uh … but you should arrive no more than fifteen minutes late. And if you’re later, they’ll think you’ve gotten lost or fo rgotten to come.

Sophie: I wouldn’t want that.

Steve: In France, how do you greet your host or hostess when you arrive?

Sophie: Well, when you arrive, it’s normal to kiss your hostess on both cheeks. If you’re a man, you shake hands with the host – you don’t kiss him.

Steve: OK, well, here we … sometimes kiss our hostess on one cheek, not both. Generally we don’t kiss our host. It kind of depends on how well you know your host and hostess. Sophie: Oh, another thing – in France, you shake hands with all the other guests. Uh … If you don’t, you’re not polite. What about here?

Steve: Well, here it’s usually OK just to say hello. It’s so important to look people in the eye when you talk to them. People may think you’re unfriendly if you don’t. And use their firs t names.

Sophie: In the past people were formal –they didn’t use first names. Now we generally use first names as well. You know, if someone is close enough to you.

A Thank You Letter

Dear Mrs. Johnson,

It is a pleasure to write this letter because it gives me an opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed your hospitality last weekend. It was my first visit to an American family and, at first, I was very anxious about my limited English and my knowledge of American customs. Then I saw you and your children waiting for me at the station with warm smiles of welcome on your faces. I immediately knew that everything was going to be all right. You and your wonderful family put me at ease right away.

There are many happy memories of the weekend that I will keep with me forever. Above all, I will remember that you made me feel at home. There were so many new and different things for me to see and do. I particularly enjoyed driving through the countryside with Mr. Johnson and you and seeing the charming colors of the leaves on the trees. I liked playing baseball with your sons, Jimmy and Joey. They were very patient with me and full of fun. Tell them I will teach them how to play soccer next time. I also had a good time at the community square dance on Saturday night. It was my first square dance, and I cannot forget how friendly and kind everyone around was.

I am back at school again now and I am very happy because I know now a real American family and it is one of the nicest families I have ever met. Because my English is still not very good, I cannot express my feelings better. I can only say ―thank you‖ and hope that someday you will visit my country and I can return your hospitality.

Sincerely yours

Carlos Gomez

Unit 5

Part A Exercise1

Conversation1

W Hey, Brian, what did you think of the movie Lord of the Rings?

M I thought it was great. I just loved it.

W You did? I thought it was terrible.

M How come? What didn’t you like about it ?

W There was too much fighting.

Conversation 2

W Henry, what do you think of the article on gun control in today’s paper?

M Well, in my opinion, it is superficial. The writer does not seem to know what he is talking about.

W Do you really think so? I find it quite well-written. I think he has made a very strong argument for the issue.

Exercise 2

Sir,

I am worried about the effect of television on our children. Firstly, there are a lot of violent programs. Secondly, the advertising is very bad for them. Children see advertisements for sweets and toys, for example, and always want to go out and buy them. Thirdly, sitting in front of the television set all day is bad for their eyes; all my children wear glasses. Finally, watching television is not creative. When I say this to my children, they just do not answer. They are too busy watching TV.

I have decided to sell my TV set, as this seems to be the only solution.

Yours

A very worried mother

Part B

Forum 1 Is It Stupid to Say So?

Nancy Rodgers is a law student. Last week her lecturer advised her to change to a more suitable course. He said that a career in law was unsuitable for women.

Nancy I was shocked. At first I thought he was joking. Of course, it was a stupid thing to say. Women are as intelligent as men. There are some excellent women lawyers. If he does not want to teach me, he should change his job. I have a right to study law.

Andrew Nancy, you are wasting your time studying law. When you are married and have children you will be too busy to work. Anyway, women can’t decide anything properly because they are too emotional. You should study cooking and sewing in order to become a good wife and mother.

Paul As I see it, an intelligent woman can succeed in any career if she has enough strength to… overcome male prejudice. But Nancy has to decide first whether or not she wants to have children. It is impossible to have a successful career and to be a good mother at the same time. That is why all the professions are dominated by men.

Betty Well, I can not understand why Nancy wants to study law, or any other course. For myself, I really enjoy being a wife and a mother. I have two lovely little boys and I have a good husband who works hard to pay for everything we need. I could not do his work and he certainly could not do mine. We are both happy with our work. Women’s liberation should stop interfering. Chris Until I find a job that pays me more money than my wife’s getting no w, I will do all the housework. Some men might laugh at me, but I am quite happy with this arrangement. And of course it leaves me so much free time for hobbies. They say that housework is a woman ’ job. That’s stupid. Men always do their own housework when they are single, don’t they? If Nancy wants to have a career in law, why should anybody try to stop her?

Forum 2 Handguns

Chairman Good evening. I am Bob Smith. As we know, the question of handguns always raises a lot of discussion in our country. Tonight we will have opinions from all of you, as people from different countries. Our guests tonight are Roger from Canada, Reiko from Japan, Yu Fen from China, and Antonio from Italy. Roger, let’s start with you.

Roger In my opinion, the laws on handguns should be changed. Do you know more than 40,000 people a year are killed with handguns? It is crazy. Guns should be outlawed immediately. Chairman Yu Fen, what is your opinion?

Yu Fen well, I don’t really like guns, but we have to ask who is doing the killing. I think most of the killers are criminals. I hate to say it, but I think people should be allowed to own guns. Ordinary people have to be able to protect themselves and their families.

Chairman People in Japan can’t have guns at h ome. What do you think of all this, Reiko? Reiko I also hate to say it, but I agree with Yu Fen. A violent person might use anything as a weapon. Roger said around 40,000 people get killed with guns each year. I think more than a million people have a gun at home. All gun owners are not crazy killers. In my opinion people should be allowed to own guns.

Chairman That’s a very good point, Reiko. It is like traffic accidents. Many people get killed in car accidents, but we don’t talk about the milli ons and millions of people who drive their cars every day and never have an accident. Antonio? What do you think of it? Do you agree with Reiko or not?

Antonio I see her point. But I’ve heard that there are close to 20,000 accidents in the home every year that happen because of guns. Children watch TV and see people shooting other people, but they are too young to understand what happens in real life. So I think it is very dangerous to allow people to possess guns. I think the law should be changed, and no one except the police should be able to carry guns.

Chairman Thank you, guests. So, listeners, you’ve heard some opinions from around the world. Now we want to hear your opinion. Please call us or e-mail us.

Unit 6

Part A

W I’ve got the feeling that a lot of college students these days seem to be in financial difficulties.

The government should give them some money every month.

M I’m not sure I can agree with you .If so, some of them would want to be students all their lives.

W Oh, I don’t mean a lot of money-just an allowance.

M Oh, I don’t think it would be a good idea. The government can get students an interest-free loan. That’s what they do in Sweden.

W Well, that’s another solution .But when do they have to pay it back?

M In ten years, I guess.

W Sounds a good idea.

Part B

Banks

Nearly every adult has some business with a bank. Most people have savings accounts .where they deposit their money. Many also have checking accounts which permit them to write a check against the funds in their accounts. A lot of people pay their bills by check rather than in cash. It is more convenient and the cancelled check is a receipt of payment. Banks do more than offer savings and checking accounts to their customers. A bank will generally cash a check for you and will change large bills for you.

When the bank accepts money for deposit it pays interest on the money deposited. Thus your money in the bank is earning money. Normally the bank pays about 3% interest.

The bank also provides security for one’s speci al papers and valuables. Most banks have a safe deposit section. Here you can rent a box(made of metal)in which you store your valuables and important papers. You are given a key to the box and only you can open the box.

One of the most important functions of a bank is to make loans. This is the way the bank makes its money. If you want to buy an expensive object (car, house, etc.)you may have to borrow the money from the bank. You go to the bank and make an application for a loan. After the bank examines your application to insure that you are a good risk they then will give you the money. You then have to repay the bank the amount of the loan plus interest over a period of time.

What Is Money ?

Money is a medium of exchange that is widely accepted in payment for goods and services and in settlement of debts. Money also serves as a standard of value for measuring the relative worth of different goods and services.

The functions of money as a medium of exchange and a measure of value greatly facilitate the exchange of goods and services and the specialization of production. Without the use of money, trade would be reduced to barter, or the direct exchange of one commodity for another; this was the means used y primitive people. In a barter economy, a person having something to trade must find another who wants it and has something acceptable to offer in exchange. In a money economy, the owner of a commodity may sell it for money, which is acceptable in payment for goods. Money may therefore be regarded as a keystone of modern economic life.

Most of the money circulating today is made of metal, paper or plastics. But in ancient times, people actually used various kinds of things as exchange media, such as knives, cloth, rice, gold and silver. In China, for instance, cloth and metals were used as money for thousands of years. In southwest Asia and parts of Africa, rice and other things were used as money for a long time.

Today everybody knows that the first metal coins were made in China. England used tin to make its first coins. Russia and some other countries used copper to make their money. Later, a number of countries began to make coins of gold and silver. Again the Chinese people thought of a way to improve their money. As the metal money was inconvenient if you wanted to buy something expensive, paper currency came into existence, though the first paper money looked more like a note from one person to another than the paper currency we use today.

Part A Micro-listening

Exercise 1

Conversation 1

M Julie, are you going to throw away all those reports?

W Yes. I don’t need them anymore.

M Well, but the other sike of each page is still blank. You can reuse the paper for other purposes, can’t you? It seems such a waste to dump them sll in the waste-paper basket. You know how many trees would have to be cut down to make all those paper.

W Mm, you’re right, I’ll hang on to them.

Conversation 2

W Hey, wait a minute. Don’t throw the cup away.

M Why not? There’s a chip in the cup. See a small piece has broken off.

W Well, I know it’s chipped, but it’s still OK. You know, you could use it as a penholder. You could put …um…pens and pencils in it and keep it on your desk.

M Oh, I hadn’t thought of that. That’s a good idea. Thanks.

Conversation 3

M Wait, wait. That’s a nice container. Don’t throw it away.

W Why not? It’s empty.

M Well, but you can use it again. It’s great for storage. You can put cookies, candies or chocolates in it—with the plastic lid on. That’ll keep them fresh.

Exercise 2

The problem of over-packaging is noticeable everywhere in your daily life. A single trip to a supermarket usually results in several plastic bags and the items we buy typically have two or three layers of packaging. Some form of packaging is perhaps necessary but we have to realize that excessive packaging can create harmful effects on the environment. It is a waste of resources.

Considering its damage to the environment, we should try to avoid excessive packaging wherever possible. We can ask companies to practice minimal packaging and use recyclable material for packaging. We can also start programs or use public advertisements to encourage consumers to bring their own bags and to choose products that involve less packaging.

Over-packaging is a wasteful use of resources and it also pollutes the environment. We should do away with the practice so as to conserve resources and protect our environment.

Part B Macro-listening

Passage 1

Save the Earth to Save Ourselves

With the advancement of modern science, it seems that we are now living in greater comfort

and in much better conditions. But are we really? The answer is definitely not.

Why? This is because we are now producing much more rubbish than ever before, and many of us are not aware of environmental protection. People take it for granted that the earth will forever take of us no matter how we treat it in return. They pollute it with all sorts of rubbish we produce—plastic bags, household waste, poisonous factory waste, etc.—without even bothering to think of the consequences.

What will happen to the rubbish we throw away? Will it simply disappear? No, it will poison the earth—the place where we live.

What will happen if we poison our earth? Well, very simple, it will poison us. Think about this: if the earth is poisoned, then the water that comes out of it will be poisoned, the food that we grow in it will be poisoned and animals that live on it will be poisoned—and that means we who poisonthe earth will be poisoned.

So, let’s not pollute or poison th earth, but save the earth to save ourselves.

Exercise1

1.What, according to the passage, has the advancement of modern science brought us?

2.What seems to be the reason that the earth is being polluted?

3.What do we often ignore while we are advancing in developing modern science?

4.What consequences will we have to face, according to the passage?

5.What can you infer from the passage?

Exercise 2

1.What sorts of rubbish are we producing today?

2.What is some people’s wrong idea of the earth?

3.What will be poisoned if the earth is poisoned?

Passage 2

Use Less Paper

―John, get me a piece of paper, I have to write a note to Judy. ‖

―Mary, why are these paper boxes still here? They’re useless. You’d better throw them away.‖

―Mum, there’s no more paper in the toilet. Can you get me a new roll, please? ‖

Nowadays, paper is so common and so handy that no one will think twice to waste it. But if you know how much paper a person uses in a year, that could be quite scary.

According to a recent study made by an environmental protection group, it was found that the amount of paper an average person uses every year is enough to build a pile as high as a two-storey house. That’s about all the newspapers, tissues, toilet rolls, books, etc. that pass through your hands per year. That’s a lot of paper. That means a lot of trees are being cut down to produce this paper—but to grow a tree, it takes years. One country alone, Britain, uses 8.5 million tons of paper—that’s equivalent to 90 million trees—every year! If this continues, there will be no more trees left for our children.

In view of the above, wouldn’t it be great, then, if all the paper that is thrown away could be reused? This is in fact not difficult to do. We can achieve this either by using scrap paper for notes, etc., or by making completely new paper from the old paper.

Another way of saving paper is to have second-hand book sales. Everyone benefits—you get rid of all the old books that are useless to you and are taking up space in you home, and someone else gets to buy the books they want at much lower prices. These sales can also be arranged to raise money for charities. In this way, we can create added value. That’s much better than throwing books away as rubbish, isn’t it?

Exercise 1

1.What fact does the speaker want his listeners to e aware of?

2.How much paper does an average person use every year, according to a recent study?

3.What will happen if people in Britain continue to waste paper?

4.What seems to be the solution to the problem, according to the passage?

5.What can you infer from the passage?

Exercise 2

1.How can we solve the problem of wasting paper?

2.What can we benefit from second-hand book sales?

Part D Home Listening

A Passage

Environmental Problems

Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.

However, today, more and more consumers are choosing ―green‖ and demanding that the product before they buy are greeen products. They ask questions like these: ―Will this shampoo damage the environment? ‖ ―Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?‖

A recent survey showed that two out of five adults now consider the environmental safety of a product before they use it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their pro ducts to make sure that they are ―green‖, that is, friendly to the environment.

Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.

The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. The public will no longer accept th e old attitude of ―Buy it, throw it away, and forget about it.‖

Exercise

1.What is the main idea of the passage?

2.Which factors are mentioned in the passage as having contributed to the pollution problem?

3.What can you infer from the passage?

A Talk

Think Green

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I’m sure we have all heard the expression, ―Think Green‖. Tonight we’re going to talk about ways we can ―Act Green‖ in our homes. Every day people all over the world are hurting the environment without even knowing it. For example, busy families buy paper napkins and plastic food wrap at the supermarket. This helps them save time on housework, but after these things have been used, what happens to them? They go in the trash. In many places, especially in North America, big cities are running out of places to throw their trash. What can we do about this?

How can we cut down on garbage? Well, we can start using cloth napkins and cloth towels instead of paper towels. When we go grocery shopping we can choose products that are not ―over-packaged‖. For example, last week I bought a package of cookies. The cookies were in a bay, there was a plastic tray inside the bag, and then each cookie was in its own little package in the tray in the bag! That’s over-packaging! We should also take our own bags to the grocery store to carry things home in.

Cleaning products are another danger. Dangerous cleaning products enter our water supply every day. Of course, everyone wants a clean house—so what ’s the answer? For one thing, we could make our own cleaning solutions from baking soda, lemon and vinegar.

Exercise

1.What does the passage mainly tell us?

2.What is one of the ways to save the environment suggested in the passage?

3.What can we infer from the talk?

Unit 8 Story Time

Part A Micro-listening

Exercise 1

Tom Smith is a writer. He writes detective stories for magazines. One evening he could not find an end to his story. He sat with his computer in front of him, but no idea came to his head. So he decided to go and see a crime movie to get some inspiration.

When he came back, he was surprised to find that he had had a visitor. Someone had broken into his flat. The intruder had had a drink, smoked several of Tom’ s cigarettes—and had read his story. The visitor left Tom a note:

I have read your story and I don’t think much of it. Please read my suggestions and then you can finish your story. By the way, I’m a burglar. I’m not going to steal anything tonight. But if you become a successful writer, I will return.

Tom read the burglar’s s uggestions. Then he sat down and wrote an ending to his story.

Tom has not yet become a successful writer, and he is still having difficulties finding a good ending to his stories. Hoping that his burglar might return, he always leaves a half-finished story near his computer before he goes out in the evening.

Question:

1.What can be concluded about Tom Smith?

2.What can be said about the night visitor?

Exercise 2

Bob went to a Christmas party with a friend. The friend warned him that he might meet a very boring, talkative old man there. At the party, he was with his friend and a girl whom he had just been introduced to. They were talking merrily. Just at that time a man entered the room.

―Is that the old bore who you warned me about?‖

―That,‖ said the girl, ―is my father.‖

Question: How did Bob feel when he heard what the girl said?

Story 1

An Embarrassing Experience

Every Friday morning Mrs. Bell goes to the supermarket and gets the groceries for the week. Last Friday, as usual, she drove to the supermarket. She was able to find a parking space outside the supermarket. She parked the car and locked the door.

She went into te supermarket and got a trolley. She went to the fruit section first, and there she got some apples and oranges. Then she went to the meat counter and got some steak. She wanted some wine because she was giving a dinner party that evening. She started walking towards the wine section.

At the wine section she met her neighbor, Mrs Young. Mrs Young’s three-year-old daughter Lily, was with her. As the little girl was too heavy to carry, MrsYoung let her sit in the trolley. The two women started talking. Mrs Bell told Mrs Young about the dinner party.

Lily wasn’t interested in their conversation. So she began to examine the bottles on the shelves. They were much more interesting. She picked up a bottle of whisky. Neither of the women noticed.

After Lily looked at the bottle for a few seconds, she got bored. She couldn’t open the bottle, so she put it in Mrs Bell’s shopping ba g which was hanging from the handle of the trolley.

Mrs Bell found a nice bottle of red wine and put it in her trolley. She went to the checkout and joined the queue. The store detective was standing near the checkout. He saw the bottle of whisky in MrsBel l’s bag. Mrs Bell paid all the things in her trolley and walked towards the exit.

She was just going out when the shop detective stopped her and asked why she hadn’t paid for the whisky. Mrs Bell was astonished. She explained that she didn’t know anything about the bottle of whisky. The store detective didn’t believe her and asked Mrs Bell to go with him to the manager office.

An Art Lesson

Sheila entered the art center reluctantly. Her best friend. Lisa, had a painting on display, otherwise she would never have come. But Lisa talked constantly about her summer art class and urged Sheila to attend the first show. Sheila had almost refused to come when she learned what would be shown.

―Do you mean to tell me that everyone in your class painted the same thing?‖ she had asked.

―Yes,‖ Lisa had said. ―It is a still llife of an orange and some grapes.‖

―How boring! I don’t see how you could stand to paint the same thing as everyone else did. Art should be individual.‖

―It is individual,‖ Lisa had answered. ―You’ll see.‖

So Sheila had come to the show. As she walked into the gallery, she saw her friend waiting. ―Hi, Lisa!‖ Sheila called, ―Here I am. Bring on the fruit.‖

Lisa laughed and led Sheila into a large room. The first thing to catch Sheila’s eye was not a painting, but a huge color photograph of the orange and grapes that the art students had painted. It was hanging high in a wall above the paintings.

The first painting that Sheila examined was a complete surprise to her. The artist had painted a shapeless mass of color for the fruit but had misxed the colors very well, making them quite pleasing to the eye. The next artist had given the orange and grapes such perfect roundness that they looked artificial. Another artist had painted the fruit in strange shapes, while still another had made it look so real that Sheila felt she could almost taste it. Lisa’s painting showed the surface of the orange in every detail, making Sheila want to touch it.

By the time Sheila finished viewing all the paintings, she was thorougly fascinated. She realized that every painting was as individual as the student who had painted it. All had seen the fruit differently and had tried to put their impression on canvas. Sheila had begun to learn what art was all about.

Do Dreams Save Lives? (Part I)

Do dreams save lives? Yes, they do sometimes save lives of friends and other people.

Merna was a Polish girl, who was in love with a Polish soldier. During World War I the soldier left her to fight on the battlefield. Later on Merna began to dream about him.

The first dream came in October, 1918, about a month before the end of the war. In the dream she saw him in a dark place among some rocks or stones. He was trying to move some of them, but he could not do so. So he stopped trying and sat down on the ground alone in the dark.

She had this dream several times, but then in the following summer it changed. In the new dream she saw a castle on a hill. Part of the castle had fallen down and there were a lot of stones on the ground below the broken part. She went towards these stones in her dreams, and then she heard the voice of her boyfriend. The voice came from under the stones. And so she tried to lift some of them. But she was too weak to do this, and she had to go away sadly.

This dream took the place of the old one, and she saw stones several times in her sleep on other nights. She told her mother about it, and a lot of other people in the city heard about the dream. But they didn’t care very much. A girl’s dreams were not important to other people.

Merna decided that she ought to find the castle. She was quite sure that it was a real one, but there were a lot of old castles in that part of Poland. There was little hope of finding a special one among so many. But the dream continued, and one day Merna could not bear it any longer. She had to find that castle. So she began a long journey on foot.

A Story

Do Dreams Save Lives? (Part II)

Day after day she went onwards, looking for the castle. She slept on the ground beside the road, and sometimes farmers gave her something to eat. For them it was only another sad story of the war, but they had kind hearts.

One day in April, 1920, she came to a little village. There on the top of a hill stood the castle, as she had seen it so often in her dreams! She ran into the village and fell down on the ground.

Of course, a crowd of people arrived and looked down at her. A policeman arrived, too, and Merna told everyone about her dreams.

―There’s the castle!‖ she cried wildly, pointing to it. ―That’s the castle that I’v e seen in my dreams!‖ But people saw the castle every day and did not care much.

She got up and went towards the fallen stones at the bottom of the castle wall, and some of the villagers went with her. She asked the men to lift up the stone, and they laughingly did so. They did not believe that her story had any meaning, but it was not difficult to lift a few stones. They found nothing on the first day, but after working for two days they heard a man’s voide calling from below.

Merna knew that voice. It was the voice of her boyfriend. The men quickly made the hole bigger and soon brought him out. He had been in the darkness for two years, and ar first the strong light of the day hurt his eyes. But soon he was looking around with surprise at the people who were standing there. He had lived on the food that he had found in the castle. He had entered the castle during the war; then part of the castle was hit and destroyed, and his way was closed by
