我在佐贺的第八次运动会临近了。

对打算“初中毕业后一定要和母亲一起生活”的我来说,这是在佐贺的最后一次运动会。

上初中以后,我每年必定写信给母亲,跟她说:“今年一定要来看我的运动会。”

今年我也不抱什么希望地写了信,想不到母亲回信说:“今年会去看,我很期待。”

我看到信时,还以为哪里搞错了。

好几次做过这样的梦,我怀疑这是梦,还捏捏脸颊看是不是做梦。是真的呢。

母亲给外婆的信上也说要来佐贺。

想到母亲真的要来看运动会,我就忍不住想绕整个佐贺跑一圈。

第二天早上,我慎重地把信放进书包,然后上学去。

第一节是社会课,我当然又不管三七二十一地打开有花纹的信笺。“德永,那是什么?”

“我妈妈的来信。”

“哦?”

老师很感兴趣地看着我的信。

“什么?要来看运动会……”

“啊,老师,不要再看啦。”

我假装不高兴地收起信不让老师看。

我不厌其烦地每节课都拿出信来看看。

就像展示蜡笔和钉鞋一样,我向大家炫耀着。我总是想听大家说:“太好了!德永。”

初中运动会的重要项目是长跑比赛。

男子组的路线是出校门,沿着护城河绕一圈,经过城内,再回到学校,全长七公里,十分吃力的赛程。

可是这在每天辛苦练习棒球的我们眼中,不算什么。实际上我连续两年都拿了冠军,但因为今年觉得非拿冠军不可,稍微感到一点压力。

越接近运动会,我越担心那天会不会感冒,会不会拉肚子。脑子里老是浮现这些无谓的妄想,这在我很少有。

结果,我既没有感冒,也没有拉肚子。

但是遇到更糟糕的状况——我等了又等,预定运动会前一天该到的母亲一直没来!

“她说会早早做完工作搭火车来,一定是晚了,没赶上火车,明天早上就会来,别担心,去睡吧!”

外婆催我上床,可是我一点也睡不着。

迷迷糊糊中看到母亲来了,醒来发觉是梦,非常失望。我又迷迷糊糊地梦见运动会都结束了,母亲还是没来,醒来发觉是梦以后,反倒摸着胸口松一口气。

就这样反反复复,似睡非睡,折腾到天亮。

外婆去上工时,我站在河堤上等母亲来。

火车早上从广岛出发,应该不会那么早抵达,可我就是无法安心地躺在床上。

到了上学时间,我满心不安,但还是不死心。

母亲清清楚楚地在信上写着“会去看”,我相信她一定会来。

到了下午,比赛进行到长跑项目。我站在起跑线后,还在观众群中搜寻母亲,可是到处也不见母亲的踪影。

长跑比赛开始了。

我按照自己的步调轻松起跑,骑摩托车做先导的是棒球队的田中老师。

我跑了一二十分钟后,呼吸开始有点急促,同时拉开和后面那群人的距离。

这个比赛在当地很有名,即使自家子女没有参赛,还是有很多人沿途观看。

“那孩子跑得好快。”

“真的好快。”

我听到这些声音。

我和第二名离得很远,每分每秒地只想着向前跑。如果不这样,我就会想还没有来的母亲,可能影响我的速度。

我的心跳加速。

长跑路线也经过外婆家前面。

马上就到我们家了。

“怦、怦、怦、怦”,我的心脏都快震破了。

我想快点通过家门前,母亲一定在那里!

不,我不想到达那里,我不想失望!

两种心情在我心中交杂。马上就到我们家了。眼看就要到家门前时,我低头不敢看。

我盯着脚尖默默地跑。

“昭广,加油!”

突然,耳边响起了母亲的声音。我不曾听过那么大的声音。

我抬起头,家门前拼命呼喊挥手的人,确实是母亲。

“昭广,加油!”

外婆也在旁边笑着挥手。

我又低下头。

越接近家门前,我越不知道该怎么办。

我终究做不出电视剧里那种含笑挥手致意的动作。

“喂!德永,看着你母亲!不要低头,抬头挺胸地跑!”

田中老师从摩托车上对我喊。

我抬起头,直视前方。

“昭广,昭广,加油!”母亲拼命地挥手。

我向母亲大喊:

“妈,我很快!我读书不行,可是跑得很快!”

经过家门后不久,我听到像是抑制不住的呜咽,仔细一看,是田中老师在哭。他一边骑着摩托车做前导,一边憋着气呜呜哭着。

“德永,太好了!你母亲来了。”

田中老师那汗水淋漓的黝黑脸颊上满是泪水。

我把挂在脖子上的毛巾递给老师。

我看着田中老师擦掉泪水,发现自己的脸颊也是湿热的。

田中老师泪中带笑地把毛巾还给我。
