Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic How I Finance My College Education. You should write at least 100 words, and base your composition on the

In some years, the tuition and fees of college education is more and more expensive.

However, the problem can be done by a lot of ways. Such as doing some part time jobs, being a home teacher and so on. But most of students choose this way. Parents, provide them to study. If some of students don’t want to cho o se it way, they can’t choose, the other better — aiding to larn to get a loan.

I think I will choose the good idea. When I have a nice, I will provide the loan by myself and help my parent lighten pressure. If their parents are rich, they can choose their help them. But I agree the students live in other country cannot always pay his tuition and fees of education.

(3)语言错误较多,很多句子不通顺,如“If their parents are rich, they can choose their help them”应改为“If their parents are rich, they can ask parents to pay the fees”。

As modern college students, we all think that the fees of college education is higher and higher. But, there are some ways to deal with this problem now.

First, more and more students start to find some work some out of the school to earn money for the college tuition and fees. Second, others prefer to do some apartment jobs at school. They think although it can’t earn much money, it also can’t waste much time for studies. Then there are some students asking for a loan from local bank for the fees. It can’t make their life too nervous and they can p ay back these money to the bank when they will have a good job. And earn much money.

I think the second way is the best to me . Because I don’t want to waste much time for studies. I think study is the most important thing in the college and we can’t be ta ken in the school.

(3)语言错误相当多,如第二段中的“find some work some out of the school”, “It cannot make their life too nervous”等。

The past decade has witnessed a new tuition and fees for college students. Then how to finance their college education is becoming big concern to students and the society. To this problem there are some possible approaches.

Most students will ask their parents to pay the tuition and fees and the parents also take it for granted that they have such a responsibility to pay for their children’s education. Another approach is that student can apply for the low-interest loans from the bank. In this way they can relieve the parent’s financ ial burden and foster their independence as well.

I think the second way is better. For my family cannot pay the fees for me. And if I do part-time job, I feel tired.

表达思想清楚,文字连贯,用词比较准确,但有少量语言错误,如“The past decade has witnessed a new tuition and fees for college students”应改为“The past decade has witnessed a rise in tuition and fees for college students”。

Nowadays, tuition and fees for college students are much higher than ever before. How to finance my college education has become a matter of concern.

There are many ways to support my college education financially. In the first place, I can obtain all the money from my parents. In the second place, I can apply for/ ask for a bank loan, especially set up/ established for college students/ und ergraduates. What’s more, I can find a part-time job to earn enough money.

As far as I’m concerned, I prefer the bank loan for the following reasons. For one thing, my parents are not rich enough to afford me. For another, I will not have enough time and energy to study after finishing my part-time/ temporary/ odd jobs. In addition, I believe I can hunt a rewarding/ dream job after graduation, and then I will be able to pay off.

College English Teaching in China

Topic Sentence (TS):English teaching in China is a total failure.

Developing Sentence (DS1):Graduates can’t communicate with foreigners.

Developing Sentence (DS2):They can’t translate or write well.

TS:There are many reasons for the failure.

DS1:Teacher-centred class is the main form of English teaching.

DS2:Textbooks are not proper.

DS3:Test-oriented education misleads English teaching.

TS:My suggestion is that college English teaching should be reformed.

DS:Student-centred class and exams should be properly dealt with.

Someone says that English teaching at college in China is a total failure. To some extent, it is reasonable to say so, for after ten-year English learn ing most graduates can’t properly communicate with foreigners, nor can they write in English, let alone translate well between languages.

I believe there are many reasons that lead to the problem. To begin with, English teaching at college is, to a great extent, teacher-centered. It is still very common in the classroom that the teacher explains every language point in detail, while students take notes all the time. Secondly, culture is neglected in English teaching because of poor text design. Some redundant unrealistic materials and a large number of grammars and structure exercises in the text lead students to memorize a large vocabulary and a lot of English rules. Finally, test-oriented education, in a sense, misleads and impedes college English teaching in China.

My suggestion is that, China’s college English teaching should be reformed. The education system should be quality-oriented. Students should be centered on, culture be introduced in language teaching, and examination should be dealt with appropriately.

1. Everyone has special interest while reading so we can choose / select different books to read according to our personal interest.

写作中常见的限定词有:maybe, perhaps, probably, mainly, generally, commonly, personally, comparatively, typically, usually, sometimes, often, most, mostly, nearly, almost, not necessarily, in general, at least, at most, may as well, had better, to some extent, to some degree, more often than not, for the most part等。

例2. I don’t agree with the first argument to some extent.

3. The traffic in many big cities is getting more and more crowded / heavier and heavier.

分析:汉语中我们可以说“交通拥挤”,但英文中traffi c和crowded是不能搭配的,因为crowded 是表示街道、房间等地方挤满了人或东西,我们可以说The street is crowded,但不能说The traffic is crowded。

1. A. There are fewer and fewer citizens who like to see films.

B. Films are now losing their appeal for many citizens.

2. A. There are many people who complain of severe housing shortages.

B. Housing shortages become the source of great complaint.

3. A. If we only apply book knowledge, we will not get good result.

B. The application of book knowledge alone will not bring you good result.

4. A. If there is no pollution, man can certainly survive.

B. Man can certainly survive in the world where there is no pollution.

5. A. In order to prevent the problem becoming too serious to solve, we must take an immediate step.

B. An immediate step must be taken before the problem becomes too serious to solve.

6. A. More and more people who become richer and richer can afford a motorcycle.

B. The growing number of people who become increasingly rich can now afford a motorcycle.

7. A. More and more trees have disappeared in the city.

B. There is a sharp decline in the number of trees in the city.

Firstly, secondly, thirdly, last

First and foremost, besides, last but not least

To begin with, next, furthermore, finally

例:当表达“走出房间”之意时,最常用的是walk out of the room。

但是说小偷走出房间应该用:slip out of the room。

说小孩走出房间应该用:sail out of the room。

说老人走出房间应该用:stagger out of the room。

Paragraph I:

(承)Paragraph II:

(1)提出一种观点及其优点;

(2)本段的支持性分论点;

Paragraph III:

(1)承上启下的过渡句;

(2)提出另一种观点及其优点;

Paragraph IV:

(1)平衡两种看法;

(2)给出自己的观点;

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic of On Spring Festival Gala. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below:

On Spring Festival Gala

The CCTV Spring Festival Gala is one of China’s most popular annual television events, watched by millions of people on the eve of the lunar New Y ear. However, different people offer different opinions as for the gala.

Some people take it for granted that the Spring Festival Gala adds up fun and excitement and makes a happy festival atmosphere. In their opinion, it suits most audience’s tastes. Besides, many people have a strong feeling for it.

However, others hold that it should be cancelled. They maintain that about four-hour-long programs will make some people feel a bit bored. And the forms of most programs are familiar to the audience and lack of originality.

Weighing up these two arguments, I am for the former opinion. For one thing, it involves all kinds of programs, most of which are relaxing and exciting. For instance, cross talks and other comic performances always bring people a lot of laughter. For another, the directors are trying harder to figure out the solutions to maintain the interest of the younger generation. Therefore, as stated above, the Spring Festival Gala is still an indispensable part of the New Y ear’s Eve.

分析:

例如some people take it for

granted, in their opinion, others hold, they maintain that,而不是全部用think。

Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Rise of Shanzhai Culture. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the

The Rise of Shanzhai Culture

The vast array of knockoff name-brand products, such as cell phones, DVDs, MP3 players, have made “shanzhai” one of the hottest words of the year. Now we wear shanzhai watches, talk through shanzhai cell phones, play shanzhai video games, use shanzhai computers, and even watch shanzhai TV shows. But public opinions are clearly divided as to the rise of shanzhai culture.

Advocates invariably associate it with innovation, stylishness, the DIY spirit, open-mindedness and practicality, as shanzhai products often mix imitation with innovation — a similar skin but a different heart. Besides, they respond to the market more swiftly and they are more considerate in design. Thanks to them, more people at the grassroots level can enjoy the benefit of modern technology.

However, other people, including myself, hold more reserved attitudes towards the shanzhai fever. For all the popularity it has won, a copycat is a copycat. The mockery of the prestige products not only steals their profits but also upsets market competition. Moreover, shanzhai products thrive on the current legal loopholes. Under the disguise of anti-dominance slogans, they make illegal profits by violating intellectual property rights and evading taxes.

(1)the vast array of 意为“大量的”。

(2)…public opinions are clearly divided

(1)mix imitation with innovation

(2)respond to the market

(1)The mockery of the prestige products

(3)legal loopholes

(4)Under the disguise of anti-dominance slogans

(5)violating intellectual property rights

(6)evading taxes

Paragraph II:

(1) 作者对该现象问题的基本看法,即文章的论点句;

(2) 支持性的细节分论点(至少两点);

Paragraph III:

Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists? You should write at least 100 words, and base your

Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists?

Nowadays, places with different styles of tourist resources have become tourist destinations, among which the campuses of prestigious universities in Beijing such as Peking University, Tsinghua University turn out to be a new focus.

Opinions on whether the university campuses should be open to tourists vary from individual to individual. Proponents put forward the following two reasons. First, with the coming of a great number of tourists, universities may obtain a lot of money from the campus tourism. Second, young children, when absorbed in the noble and sacred atmosphere, may be stimulated to work even harder to realize their dream of attending universities. Others hold a negative view about it, believing this practice will do more harm than good to the academic atmosphere of the university.

In my viewpoint, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks on the condition that proper visiting time is scheduled. Anyway universities should be not only an ivory tower to college students, but also a tourist attraction to all people.

分析:

Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Should Young People Use Their Parents’ Money to Buy Houses? You should write at least 120 words, and

base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

Should Y oung People Use Their Parents’ Money to Buy Houses?

The uprising housing prices have become a headache for many young people. The reality is that, at their current income levels, it is almost impossible for most of them to afford a house on their own. So, many young people have to resort to their parents for financial support.

But this has incurred a lot of criticism. Critics say that young people should not use their parents’

money for their own happiness. As is known to all, most parents work very hard and live a very simple life to save money. Besides, they maintain that the younger generation has forgotten the idea of living a thrift life and is very selfish, for they always take it for granted to take things from their parents.

As to this controversy, my opinion is that young people can borrow money from their parents to pay for the down payment. After all , renting a house is not worthwhile in the long term. Besides, with the help from their parents, the tie between parents and children can be stronger.

(1)uprising

at the current level of income

(3)afford

(5)incur

(6)as is known to all 意为“众所周知”,为常用表达。

(7)besides

(8)take it for granted to do sth.

(9)controversy

(10)down payment

Paragraph I: (1)概括描述图表:趋势描写;

Paragraph II:(1)提出自己的理由和观点(本段主题句);

Paragraph III:(1)预测未来和提出解决方法(好现象的预测,坏现象的解决方法);

Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition of no less than 100 words on Income Sources Between Chinese and American Students. Study the following table carefully

and your composition must be based on the information given in the table. Write three

paragraphs to:

1. Describe the differences of the income sources between Chinese and American students.

2. Analyze possible reasons for these differences.

3. Predicate future tendency.

Income Sources Between Chinese and American Students

As can be seen from the table, income sources of Chinese students are quite different from those of American students. In China, students get 90% of their money from their parents while in America, only 50% of students’ money is provid ed by parents. In addition, Chinese students earn only 5% of their money from part-time jobs and 5% from fellowship or scholarship while income from these two resources for American students takes up 35% and 15% respectively of their total income.

I think there are probably three reasons for these differences. First, because of the influence of different social and family values, Chinese students have formed the habit of asking for money from their parents while American students have developed more sense of being financially independent. Second, most Chinese parents devote too much care to their children and they would rather save up to afford their children’s education than encourage them to take part-time jobs. But in America, many parents pay more attention to developing the students’ ability of self-reliance, so they encourage their children to find part-time jobs to earn some money by themselves. Third, since America is more developed than China, it is relatively easy for students to find part -time jobs. In China, such opportunities are rather rare.

I believe with the development of China, more and more Chinese students will realize and pay more attention to the necessity of self-dependence. In addition, more and more opportunities will be provided for them to take part-time jobs. So more students will go out of the ivory tower to broaden their knowledge and to become the master of their own lives.

Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition of no less than 120 words on Film Is Giving Way to TV. Study the following line graph carefully and your composition must

be based on the information given in the line graph.

Film is Giving Way to TV

Nowadays there are fewer and fewer cinema-goers. However, there are more and more TV viewers.

There are many reasons for this social phenomenon. But in general, they come down to three major ones. First, film tickets are too expensive, while it doesn’t cost much to watch TV at home. Besides, it is time-consuming and inconvenient to go to the cinema. Nevertheless, it is very convenient and comfortable to watch TV at home. Y ou needn’t go out but just need to turn on the television. Most important of all, if you don’t like the film, you’ll have to sit through it; but if you don’t like one program on TV, you can shift to another.

However, some people still go to the cinema. They usually go to the cinema for the purpose of social contact. Y oung people go dating there. Other people go to the cinema as an activity. For example, schools often organize children to go to the cinema. Sometimes employees also go to the cinema with the film tickets presented by their institutions.

Directions:For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: A Letter to the University President about the Canteen Service on Campus. You should write at least 100

words, and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:假设你是李明,请你就本校食堂的状况给校长写一封信,内容应涉及食堂的饭菜质量、价格、环境、服务等,可以是表扬,可以是批评建议,也可以兼而有之。

January 12th, 2002 Dear Mr. President,

I am a student of Chemistry Department. I’m writing to complain about the dining halls in this university.

First, the food in the dining halls is not delicious enough, either too salty or too watery, especially in Dining Hall 3. Second, the prices are rather high and usually we cannot afford it. Third, the dining halls are always very crowded and we can seldom find seats if arriving there not early enough and the tables are not cleaned in time. Anyway, what is good is that the working staff in the dining halls are quite kind, friendly and patient, and they usually try their best to meet the demand of the students and teachers.

I suggest enlarging the dining halls and improving the quality of foods and reducing the prices to what is acceptable to all the students.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Y ours sincerely,

Li Ming

【例】四级考试中,只出现过一次专门的记叙文体裁的写作,即“An Early Morning Walk”(1988.6.),2003年6月出现过包含记叙文的作文,即“An Eye-Witness Account of a Traffic Accident”。

An Early Morning Walk One morning I got up very early, and everything around was very quiet. The sun had just risen, shining brilliantly and everything seemed to be covered with a layer of golden silk. There were only some birds singing occasionally in the tall trees. I strolled along the street toward the park, breathing the fresh air and feeling extremely happy. When I arrived at the park,I found,to my surprise, that there were so many people there. Men and women, boys and girls, all were enjoying themselves in their various activities. Some were doing morning exercises, some were playing badminton and some old people were having their tea while talking to each other cheerfully. I wandered around the park. To my delight,I found a few middle-school students talking to each other in English in one corner of the park. I went up and spoke to them in English. We soon became friends. I was very glad to find another opportunity to practice my spoken English. On the way home,I realized that an early morning walk really was good and healthful. Taking early morning walks makes one healthy and wise. 【点评】文章按照时间顺序(in chronological order),第一句话点明时间(One morning)、人物(第一人称“I”),并简要描述了早晨的特点(What was the setting),接着第二段第一句话交代地点(in the park),然后介绍公园里人们及作者的活动(What was happening),最后在文章结尾点题,即,归纳中心思想——Taking early morning walks makes one healthy and wise. 1. 以“A Most Unlucky Day”为题,想想该怎么写。 When: Where: Who: What: Why: How: 参考思路

Calculate for a moment what could be done with even a part of those hours. Five thousand hours, I am told, are what a typical college undergraduate spends working on a bachelor's degree. In 10,000 hours you could have learned enough to become an astronomer or engineer. You could have learned several languages fluently. If it appealed to you, you could be reading Homer in the original Greek or Dostoyevsky in Russian. If it didn't, you could have walked around the world and written a book about it. The trouble with television is that it discourages concentration. Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort. The dullest, the least gifted of us can achieve things that seem miraculous to those who never concentrate on anything. But Television encourages us to apply no effort. It sells us instant gratification(满意). It diverts us only to divert, to make the time pass without pain. Television's variety becomes a narcotic(麻醉的), nor a stimulus. Its serial, kaleidoscopic (万花筒般的)exposures force us to follow its lead. The viewer is on a perpetual guided tour: 30 minutes at the museum, 30 at the cathedral, 30 for a drink, then back on the bus to the next attraction—except on television., typically, the spans allotted arc on the order of minutes or seconds, and the chosen delights are more often car crashes and people killing one another. In short, a lot of television usurps(篡夺;侵占) one of the most precious of all human gifts, the ability to focus your attention yourself, rather than just passively surrender it. Capturing your attention—and holding it—is the prime motive of most television programming and enhances its role as a profitable advertising vehicle. Programmers live in constant fear of losing anyone's attention—anyone's. The surest way to avoid doing so is to keep everything brief, not to strain the attention of anyone but instead to provide constant stimulation through variety, novelty, action and movement. Quite
