They meet on Mondays at lunch.

They remove their earphones, hide their smartphones and communicate without the help of electronic devices (设备).

They are the coolest kids at Mendez High School in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. They are the Reading Club.

“This is truly the biggest club in the school,”said English teacher Rebecca Carriaga, who formed the group last year with librarian Kim Leng. The two of them have often reached into their own pockets to feed the book-reading fever of students, and the club now has 20 members and keeps growing.

Five years ago, English teacher Rebecca said it seemed that some students, many of whom had not been exposed to (接触) reading at home, were unwilling to read because they thought books were too difficult. So she tried to make them feel more relaxed by giving them books to read and then, rather than pass out written exams, she sat with each student to “interview” them about their impressions one-to-one. “I'd ask different questions and let them talk,”said Rebecca. “Then I noticed them recommending (推荐) books to each other.”

She and her partner, Kim, knew they had to make use of that enthusiasm (热情) and then the club was set up. At first, the club talked about whatever book someone might be reading, but then came “Into the Beautiful North (by Luis Urrea),”the first book that all club members are reading and discussing together.

Dana Tsuruta, a third-year student, said she's enjoying the book so far. “The author puts a little humour into it and he puts a little bit of Spanish into it, too. I don't know much Spanish, but I'm curious, ” she said.

“This book is just interesting,”said another student Moanni Leos. Moanni said now she doesn't go anywhere without a book.

D.They were influenced by their non-reading parents.

23.How did Rebecca help improve students' reading?

A.By reading together with them.

The Mekong River, for thousands of years, has been the lifeline of the populations that depend on it for survival. The earliest settlements along the river date back to 2100 BC with the first recorded civilization—the Khmer culture of Funan. In the 5th century, the Khmer culture Chenla existed along the Mekong, and the Khmer empire of Angkor was the last great state in the region. Roughly 700 years ago, the Thai people escaped from South China across the Mekong to form the kingdom of Siam (now Thailand), and the Mekong protected Siam from invasions.

In 1540, the Portuguese Antonio de Faria was the first European to discover the Mekong. Although Europeans showed only some interest in the Mekong, the Spanish and Portugues e did make trade expeditions(探险) to the area, and the Dutch led an expedition up the Mekong in 1641-42. In the mid-19th century, the French led an exploration on the river between 1866 to 1868 and discovered that the Mekong had too many rapids and waterfalls to ever be useful for navigation(航行). From 1893, the French enlarged their control of the river into Laos until the First and Second Indochina Wars ended French involvement(介入) in the region.

The Mekong has long been regarded as the fo undation of Southeast Asia's economic growth and prosperity—necessitating(使必要) cooperation between the countries. In 1995, the "Agreement on the Cooperation for the Sustainable Development of the Mekong River Basin" signed by the governments of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam formed the Mekong River Commission (MRC). The MRC facilitates(促进) joint management of the shared water resources and cooperation on development issues. In 1996, China and Burma became Dialogue Partners of the MRC.

Today, much of the Mekong remains undeveloped and even unexplored. It is closely tied to the daily lives and culture of over 60 million people, many of whom live in poverty (贫困). However, life along the river is changing, as large dams on the

river have been built with plans for many more. Many people now live and work in the towns.

24. What is the best title for this passage?

A. The Mekong is being damaged by human activities.

B. The Mekong has attracted peoples from the world.

C. The Mekong has helped countries to cooperate.

25. The French ended their control over the Mekong because _____.

A. the river was unsuitable for navigation

B. France lost the Indochina Wars

C. France lost their interest in the river

D. Their agreement with Laos came to an end

26. Why did the Mek ong basin countries form the MRC?

A. Much of the river remains undeveloped and unexplored.

B. Many of the people along the river live in poverty.

C. The river is the foundation for their economy.

D. China and Burma came up with the suggestion.

27. What is the author’s attitude towards the future life of the people?

A. Indifferent.

B. Optimistic.

C. Pessimistic.

D. Sarcastic.

Vincent Van Gogh, for whom color was the most important form of expression, was born in Holland in 1853.Brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere, Van Gogh was highly emotional and lacked self-confidence. Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, Van Gogh had worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore and an art salesman. He remained in Belgium to study art, determined to give happiness by creating beauty. One of his famous paintings is The Potato Eaters (1885).

In 1886, he went to Paris to join his brother Théo. In Paris, Van Gogh studied with Cormon, later met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and began to lighten his very dark palette(调色板).His nervous temperament made him a difficult companion and night-long discussions combined with painting all day undermined his health. He decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help found a school of art. Gauguin did join him but with bad results. Near the end of 1888, an incident led Gauguin to finally leave Arles. Van Gogh ran after him with an open razor, was stopped by Gauguin, but ended up cutting a part of his own ear off.

Van Gogh then was sent to a mental (精神的) hospital for treatment.

In May of 1890, he seemed much better and went to live in Auvers-sur-Oise under the watchful eye of Dr Cachet. Two months later he was dead, having shot himself “for the good of all”.During his brief career he had sold one painting. Van Gogh's finest works were produced in less than three years. For many people, moths (飞蛾) are dust-colored pests that eat our clothes and disturb us by flying around lights after dark. Not for artist Joseph Scheer. The pictures he creates bring out the beauty of moths, with colors, shapes, and patterns that have never been seen before so clearly. “Digital tools let you see things you'd never see just looking with your eyes,”Scheer says. Scheer's pictures have been displayed around the world, and one reaction is heard everywhere:“People insist, ‘No, that can't be a moth,’”says Scheer.

Scheer's work began with a moth hunt in the state of New York. Scheer would leave the lights on and the windows open overnight at his university office, and then collect the moths that had flown in. When the building cleaners at the university complained, he moved the hunt to his friend Mark Klingensmith's yard. They set up two lights shining over a plastic container on a white sheet. Then moths appeared from the darkness, flew into the sheet, and fell into the plastic container.

“We got a different s pecies every night,”Scheer says. “The patterns and colors were unbelievable.”

After the hunt, they used a powerful scanner to get detailed pictures of moths. Small moths presented special challenges.

The scanner records so much information that a single moth can take 20 minutes to scan. A scan of just two small moths fills an entire CD. All that information means the size of the picture can be increased by 2,700 percent but still keep all the details and appear perfectly clear. You'd need a microscope to see the details shown in Scheer's prints.

Scheer's work is not only a new form of art. He has also made a valuable contribution to the record of the moths around him. He has helped identify more than a thousand different species. “Not from Alaska or the Amazon,”Klingensmith says. “All from one ba ckyard.”

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow

e.g. 22, Peter _____ be really difficult at times even though he’s a nice person in general. A, shall B. should C. can D. must 答案: C 这是一个情态动词的考查。近几年高考,考查情态动词侧重在表示推测的用法及情态动词+ have done , (2007 辽宁) ―― Turn off the TV, Jack.____ your homework now?

―― Mum, just ten more minutes, please. A. should you be doing B. Shouldn’t you be doing C. couldn't you be doing D. will you be doing 答案:B 23 We first met on a train in 2000. We both felt immediately that we _______ each other for years. A. knew B. have known C. had known D. known 答案:C 29.―― Have you got any job offers? ―― No, I ______. A. waited B. had been waiting C. have waited D. am waiting 答案:D 31. Please remain ____; the winner of the prize will be announced soon. A. seating B. seated C. to seat D, to be seated

石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? A. Information offered by TOI. B. New findings on hypertension. C. How TOI is put into smart phones. D. How the TOI technology works. 2. Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility. But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught. Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased th e tendency to make notes ”mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said. In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were examined on their ability and to remember facts and on how well they understood concept. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those wrote by hand. However, the type is performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it comes to memorizing facts. The researchers’ report said, “ While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears. In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future. 21. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can___. A write more notes B digest concepts better C get higher scores D understand lectures better 22. While taking notes, laptops users tend to be___. A skillful B mindless C thoughtful D tireless 23. The author of the passage aims to ___. A examine the importance of long-term memory B stress the benefit of taking notes by hand C explain the process of taking notes D promote the use of laptops. 24.
