Questions 1 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.Should You Be the Boss?Soul-searching questions for teachers considering administration. As a teacher, you manage the needs of 20 or more students at one time. Try handling 200, even 20,000 children—along with their teachers, parents, principals, and school boards. If that situation excites you, you may have what it takes to be a school administrator. In fact, 98 percent of all school administrators come from the teaching ranks, says Emil J. Haller, professor of educational administration at Cornell University.Opportunities are there. Most districts have a variety of administrators, from assistant principal to director of curriculum to superintendent (负责人), the person who manages all of the schools in a district. What is it like to give up the direct daily contact with children for a broader role in administration? Instructors spoke with teachers-turned-administrators to find out what teachers should ask themselves before pursuing a position in the ranks of administration.Do you have a passion for education? A desire to spread your vision?"I had a certain conviction about the learning environment for kids," says Georgene Mais, director of elementary instruction in the21,000-student Birdville school district, outside Fort Worth, Texas. She felt driven, she says, "to create that learning environment" for an entire campus and to be a positive influence "within the whole community." That kind of drive motivates some teachers to leave the daily triumph of seeing that light of understanding flash in a child's eyes. Others see administration simply as a different kind of teaching.Nancy Villarreal, an assistant superintendent in the Newark school district, with 7,800 students, in the San Francisco Bay area, believes administration is the ultimate teaching experience. "What I do gives me additional opportunities to work with adults in a broader perspective," she says. "I've begun to look on all of us as learners. Some of us are adult learners; some are student learners."As a principal you in effect keep teaching—teaching teachers. Paul Scwartz, principal in residence for the US Department of Education, says the job has been changing. "I think people are beginning to rethink the image of the principalship," he says. "It's becoming less a job for managers or administrators and much more involved with accountability, with issues of teaching and learning."Sometimes educators are motivated by "a desire for change," a desire for a new challenge, as in the case of Karen Beckers, who changed jobs several times in her career in the 2,200-student school district of Greenfield, Wisconsin. She entered administration as an elementary curriculum coordinator. When the position waseliminated due to declining enrollment, she returned to the classroom. "Those next years were probably the best of my career," she says, because she had a deeper understanding of curriculum design. Five years later, though she was "still having a good time teaching," she returned to administration. In 1997 she retired after 33 years as an educator—the last eight as principal. If you feel you should begin work in administration, you must be prepared for major changes, like moving. Dennis Smith, Ph.D., now superintendent of the Orange County public school district in Florida, knew that he wanted to be a principal when he began teaching in Phoenix, Arizona. After five years he became assistant principal there. A year later, at age 27, he landed his first principalship in Tucson. Next he was assistant superintendent and then took over as superintendent a year later, at age 34, in Laguna Beach, California. As superintendent, he moved from three different districts in California to his present post in Florida. His career progression went smoothly not only because he was willing and able to move but also because his spouse, a teacher, was willing and able to move with him. Will you work more days and longer hours?Although administrative positions may pay more than teaching salaries, they often require more hours on the job. Principals, for instance, work an average of 220 days a year, whereas teachers are more likely to work 180 to 185 days. In addition to school gatherings and site visits to classrooms, administrators must attend after-hours events—school board meetings and ceremonial functions.Often administrative positions require postgraduate degrees, though specific requirements vary from state to state and district to district. Most principals have master's degrees, and many superintendents have PhDs. You may also have to brush up in other areas. For instance, former principal Beckers notes, "Many teachers who become principals have to learn a great deal about special education, and it's extremely enriching."Are you a very organized problem solver?Administrative positions often involve doing a lot of paperwork, such as budget reports and staff evaluations—even more than that required of teachers. You'll need to make priorities and coordinate the diverse tasks in your new workload, along with those of your staff. Expect constantly to shift roles, from troubleshooter (调解人) to long-range planner to diplomat. Beckers warns, "If you're not a list maker or a time keeper, you'll have some problems." Principals find that if they are not careful, special events can take away from the time they need to work with teachers. Are you a team builder and a leader?Administrators are facilitators and consensus builders, but they must also give strong direction and leadership. The position of curriculum developer requires working in teams and reporting to the central office. While following the direction of your superiors, you will also want to provide teachers with a curriculum that excitesthem. It's a balancing act. Dennis Smith notes that, as superintendent, he tries "to provide a clear direction for an entire school district and community." Sometimes building the consensus means putting aside your own ideas. One of his biggest challenges, Smith says, was working with board members who fought among themselves.Career OptionsThe following positions can be found nationwide, though the descriptions may vary from district to district.SuperintendentProvides leadership for a school district; helps the school board identify goals; and keeps the entire school system and community focused on instructional needs. Of them the most talked about is perhaps Blue Beard. He was the strangest of strange mixtures of bravery and cruelty, of stupidity and brilliance. But the one thing that set him apart from all others was his pretentious love of culture. He liked to encode his directions to places where he has hidden his treasures in confusing road maps or verse so poorly written that no one can understand it. The result is most of his treasures still lie buried undiscovered. For although people have been known to have got hold of some of his road maps, none have been able to read them. The most famous of his road maps is what our story is all about. The notes accompanying the map read as follows: "This is the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean, on it lie buried some of my most valuable treasures.Around 100 years after the death of Blue beard, the map was obtained by a band of pirates, who arrived on the island with no difficulty. But to their disappointment, they did not find the treasures. The treasures were forgotten for another 100 years when a mathematician acquired the map by accident. For three days and nights he thought and thought before he suddenly jumped and let out a cry: "Eureka!"Unfortunately the mathematician did not find the treasure either, earthquake the island had been submerged. It was with a keen regret that the mathematician died, but he left us with a new geometry, without which man wouldn't have landed on the moon! Little did he think, however, that the knowledge he left behind is immeasurably more valuable than the treasures.1. Blue Beard could be described as all the following except______.A) rave B) merciless C) silly D) humorous2. According to the writer, the mathematician's greatest contribution to man is ______.A) he helped man End the islandB) he taught man how to and treasuresC) he made a new branch of knowledgeD) he found the way to locate treasuresPassage 2The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections. Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with humanlike ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the right software (软件) or by altering the architecture but that too will happen.I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon (硅) will arise first to rival and then exceed their human ancestors. Once they exceed us they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon'slong control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the known universe. As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale we may use them to expand our frontiers, first on earth through their ability to withstand environments, harmful to ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.1. In what way can we make a machine intelligent?A) By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.B) By working hard for 10 or 20 years.C) By either properly programming it or changing its structure.D) By reproducing it.2. What does the writer think about machines with human-like ability?A) He believes they will be useful to human beings.B) He believes that they will control us in the future.C) He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.D) He doesn't consider the construction of such machines possible.3. The word carbon (Line 4, para. 2) stands for "______"A) intelligent robotsB) a chemical elementC) an organic substanceD) human beings4. A robot can be used to expand our frontiers when ______.A) its intelligence and cost are beyond questionB) it is able to bear the rough environmentC) it is made as complex as the human brainD) its architecture is different from that of the present ones5. It can be inferred from the passage that ______A) after the installation of a great number of cells and connections, robots will be capable of self reproduction.B) with the rapid development of technology, people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability.C) once we make a machine as complex as the human brain, it will possess intelligence.D) robots will have control of the vast, man-made world in space.Passage 3The immune system is the body's defender. It identifies, tracks down, and destroys troublemakers before they can hurt the body. Those troublemakers may be, for example, bacteria from a cut or splinter, a measles germ, a cold bug, or even a cancer cell. These invaders try to take over our tissues and feed off our bodies, nutrients. If they succeed, we become sick or, sometimes, even die. It's the job of our immune systems to destroy these invaders before they destroy us.Say you picked up a flu virus ( 病毒)last week. Perhaps it entered your body through a cut, from a drinking glass, or from the air you breathe. Of course, you didn't feel it, but the virus made its way into your bloodstream. As soon as it entered your body, it began to reproduce. Viruses have only one goal z to take over your cells. Once inside your body, viruses try to enter cells and disrupt their normal work. If left alone, these viruses would hurt SO many cells that you would weaken, or worse, get a serious illness. But this flu virus should not be so complacent as it seems to be. As it reproduces in your bloodstream, the virus is met by a certain kind of white blood cell, the lymphocytes. The lymphocytes are the foot soldiers that keep you alive. The number of lymphocytes in your body is hard to imagine. Thousands of them could fit in the period at the end of this sentence. Your body holds about a trillion - that's 100000 000 of them, or about 300 in every drop of blood. Since you began reading this sentence, over 800000 of them have been created and destroyed. Some of these lymphocytes pass through a small walnut-sized organ called the thymus. The thymus is at the base of the neck. Here, special hormones(荷尔蒙) turn lymphocytes into fighting cells, called T ceils.T cells have one terrific talent: They can tell the difference between friend and foe; what should be in our bodies and what shouldn't. They do not affect the body's healthy cells. Yet they attack everything that is foreign to our bodies, such as germs, transplants, and even our own cells which have become abnormal, as in the case of cancer.1. It was therefore time to call in the great detective, who gave one searching glance at the corpse, then produced a microscope."Aha!" he exclaimed as he picked a hair off the lapel of the dead man's coat. "The mystery is a mystery no longer. We have only to find the man who lost this hair, and the criminal will be in our hands." The inexorable chain of logic was complete, and the detective embarked on his search. For four days and four nights he moved unobserved through the streets of New York, a scanning closely every face he passed, looking for a man who had lost a hair. On the fifth day he discovered a man disguised as a tourist, his head enveloped in a cap reaching below his ears. The man was about to board the Gloritania, and the detective lost no time in following him on board."Arrest him!" shouted the detective, and then drawing himself to his full height, he brandished aloft the hair. "This is his", said the great detective, "and it proves his guilt.""Remove his hat," ordered the ship's captain sternly. It was discovered that the man was entirely bald."Aha!" exclaimed the great detective without a moment's hesitation. The experts say HIV has an almost perfect ability to avoid the body’s immune(免疫的) defenses, making it ideal for carry ing replacement genes into patients’ bodies, according to the Observer.A team at the California-based Salk Institute, one of the world’s leading research centers on biological sciences, has created a special new breed of HIV and has started negotiations with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin clinical gene therapy (治疗) trials this year. The first trials are expected to involve patients suffering from cancers that cannot be cured by surgery although project leader Professor Inder Verma said the HIV technique would have “far wider applications”.The plan remains very likely to cause controversy since it involves making use of a virus which has caused more than 22 million deaths around the world in the past twodecades. Verma said that the idea of using HIV for a beneficial purpose was “shocking” but the fierce nature of HIV had disappeared by having all six of the potentially deadly genes removed.Illnesses such as various cancers are caused when a gene in a patient’s body fails to work properly. In the past two years, breakthroughs in genetics (遗传学) have led gene therapy scientists to try and replace the genes that do not function normally.Unfortunately, the body’s immune defenses have been known to attack the modified genes and make them lose their effects before they can start their task and progress in the field has been held up by the lack of a suitable carrier. The HIV virus has the ability to escape from, and then destroy, the immune defense cells designed to protect our bodies and this makes it attractive to scientists as a way of secretly conveying replacement genes into patients’ bodies.1. 新视野英语4复习题PassagePassage 1Anna arrived far too early. Usually she left things to the last mute, but today was a very special occasion. It was almost as if by getting there an hour beforehand she hoped to cause the plane to arrive sooner. Thoughts raced through her mind. "Do I look all right? Wi11 he notice that I' m wearing a new trouser suit? Will he even recognize me?" After all, it was a year almost to the day since she had last seen Joe. She fished a mirror out of her handbag and inspected hex face. Too much make-up? Joe had never made any comment but she knew that he did not approve of heavy make-up--" gilding the lily", he called it.It was funny how much importance she attached to making a good impression on him. After all, friends do not judge each other by appearance. All the same, it was the first meeting after a long separation, and she wanted everything to go off right.Looking out of the window, Joe caught a first glimpse, through a break in the clouds, of the town far below. This was his third visit, and looked like becoming an annual event. Certainly it was very flattering that they had invited him to be the guest lecturer at their Autumn Congress yet again. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, as a matter of courtesy, had offered to meet him at the airport, as he had done on previous occasions. This time, however, it was not necessary, partly because Joe was quite familiar with the city, but mainly because Anna had said that she could take the afternoon off in order to come and meet him.1. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like "I was wrong about that," and it is even harder to say, "I was wrong, and you were right about that."I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons. Then he related an incident and I began to remember vaguely the incident he was describing.I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the dairy food department where the incident took place. There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were stacked three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the display back together, so I went to work. The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees inspecting some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the culprit. He severely reprimanded me and wanted meto pay for any broken egg. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, apparently the manager did not.1. How old was the author when he wrote this article?A) About 8. C) About 15. B) About 23. D) About 25,2. Staff training must have a purpose, which is defined when a firm considers its training needs, which are in turn based on job descriptions and job specifications.A job description should give details of the performance that is required for a particular job, and a job specification should give information about the behavior, knowledge and skills that are expected of an employee who works in it. When all of this has been collected, it is possible to make a training specification. This specifies what the training Department must teach for the successful performance of the job, and also the best methods to use in the training period. There are many different training methods, and there are advantages and disadvantages of all of them. Successful training programmes depend on an understanding of the difference between learning about skills and training in using them. It is frequently said that learning about skills takes place "off the job" in the classroom, but training in using these skills takes place "on the job", by means of such activities as practice in the workshop. It is always difficult to evaluate the costs and savings of a training programme. The success of such a programmes depends not only on the methods used but also on the quality of the staff who do the training. A company can often check on savings in time and cost by examining the work performed by the workers and technicians who have completed a training programme. The evaluation of management training is much more complex than that.1. To be successful in our training programmes, one must understand the difference betweenA) the savings in time and cost_________.B) learning about the skill. and training in using themC) what is taught and how it is taughtD) a job description and a job specification2. The best title for the passage might be__________.A) The Importance of Staff Training. B) Staff Training ProgrammeC) How to Describe and Specify a Job D) A Successful Training ProgrammePassage 4Washington Irving was America's first man of letters to be known internationally. His works were received enthusiastically both in England and in the United States. He was, in fact, one of the most successful writers of the time in either country, delighting a large general public and at the same time winning the admiration of fellow writers like Scott in Britain and Poe and Hawthorne in the United States. The respect in which he was held partly owing to the man himself, with his warm friendliness, his good sense, his urbanity, his gay spirits, his artistic integrity, his love of both the Old World and the New. Thackeray described Irving as a "gentleman, who, though himself born in no very high sphere, was most finished, polished, witty, socially the equal of the most refined Europeans." In England he was granted an honorary degree from Oxford--an unusual honor for a citizen of a young, uncultured nation--and he received the Royal Society of Literature; America made him ambassador to Spain.Irving's background provides little to explain his literary achievements. A gifted but delicate child, he had little schooling, He studied law, but without zeal, and never did practice seriously. He was immune to his strict Presbyterian home environment, frequenting both social gatherings and the theater.1. The main point of the first paragraph is that Washington Irving was ___________.A) a man whose personal charm enabled him to sell basically inferior workB) a man who was able to move from literature to politicsC) a writer who had great success both in his own country and abroadD) America' s first man of letters2. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the "higher up" the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer' s favor, assuming he or she has a just claim.Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firefly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, "The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear" is better than" This stereo (立体声音响) does not work".The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firefly as possible. But if a polite complaint dogs not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumers' rights.1.When a consumer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he or she should do is to ___________.A) complain in person to the mangerB) threaten to take the matter to courtC) write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchaseD) show some written proof of the purchase to the store2. If a consumer wants a quick settlement of his or her problem, it is better to complain to __________.A)a public organization B)a shop assistantC) a store manager D) the manufacturer3. The most effective complaint can be made by __________.A) asking politely to change the itemB) saying firefly that the item is of poor qualityC) explaining exactly what is wrong with the itemD) showing the faulty item to the manufacturer4. The phrase "live up to" (Line 2, Para. 1) in the context means"__________".A) realize the purpose of B) keep the promise ofC) meet the standard of D) fulfill the demands of5. When you watch television, you hear and see an advertisement. If you turn the pages of a newspaper or magazine, again you find an advertisement. If you walk down the street, you see one advertising board after another. All day, every day, people who want to sell you something compete to catch your attention. As a result, advertisements are almost everywhere. In the West, advertisements are the fuel that makes mass media work. Many TV stations, newspapers, magazines, and radio stations are privately owned. The government does not give them money. So where does the money come from? It comes from advertisement. Without advertisements, there would not be these private businesses.Have you ever asked yourself what advertising is? Through the years, people have given different answers to the question. For some time it was felt that advertising was a means of "keeping your name before the public". And some people thought that advertising was "troth well told". Now more and more people tend to define it in this way: Advertising is the paid, non-personal, and usually persuasive presentation of goods, services and ideas by identified sponsors through various media.First, advertising is usually paid for. Various sponsors pay for the ads we see, read, and hear over the various media. Second, advertising is non-personal. It is not face-to-face communication. Although you may feel that a message in a certain advertisement is aimed directly at you, in reality, it is directed at large groups of people. Third, advertising is usually persuasive. Directly or indirectly it urges people to do something. All advertisements try to convince people that the product, idea, or service advertised can benefit them. Forth, the sponsor of the advertisement must be identified. From the advertisement, we can see if the sponsor is a corporation, or a committee, or an individual. Fifth, advertising reaches us through traditional and nontraditional mass media. Included in the traditional media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and films. Nontraditional media include the mail, matchbox covers, and billboards.1. The existence of the privately owned mass media depends financially on __________.A) the government B) their owner' s familiesC) advertisements D) the audience2. What does telecommunications have to do with international transportation? The obvious linkage is helping ships and aircraft navigate more efficiently, cutting time and operating expenses. This means lower costs of imported goods and cheaper travel for business and pleasure. A less obvious connection is the ability of a clothing manufacturer, for instance, to know the exact location anywhere in the world of materials and finished goods so that inventories (细账) -- and the associated transport, storage, and handling costs——are reduced sharply. The explosive aspect of the telecommunications/transportation revolution is coming in traditional service industries and functions: technical services, data entry, financial management, software programming, etc. Consider Fidelity Investments of Boston, whose British subsidiary (子公司) sells shares in German companies to German investors by telephone from London. Cheap telecommunications provide the global transportation "highway" for the work that is performed by Fidelity's customer representatives, Irish call center technicians, Indian software engineers, and Jamaican data entry clerks. These white-collar activities, many of them paying well above average wages, are becoming steadily more important in all economies. Moreover, they now are "contestable" by any country in the world that has a decent telecommunications system and an appropriately skilled labor force. What this means is that the last major barrier to international trade ——distance——is being eliminated for an increasing portion of the global economy. Transportation costs no longer will protect inefficient producers. Buyers of goods and services——software, document processing, accounting, tax advice, anything that can be digitized and transported electronically——will have access to suppliers all over the world.1. In the early years of the 21st century, transportation will especially benefit from ________.A. cheap telecommunicationsB. development of shipping and international air transportC. international tradeD. skilled labor force2. The example of Fidelity Investments of Boston shows that ___________.A. shares can be bought and sold by telephoneB. white-collar workers' wage is more than the average wageC. distance as the last barrier to international trade is being eliminatedD. white-collar activities are facing the challenges from all over the world3. In Para. 4, "Transportation costs no longer will protect inefficient producers" probably means that _________.A. transportation costs will protect efficient producersB. buyers will no longer turn to inefficient producers for the sake of lower transportation costsC. inefficient producers will no longer take transportation costs into considerationD. some producers are inefficient because the transportation costs of their goods are high4. It can be inferred from the passage that _____________.A. the price of imported goods will be lower than beforeB. white-collar workers are being replaced by computersC. clothing manufacturers will earn less moneyD. global telecommunications will result in the complete disappearance of distance5. The passage is mainly about ___________.A. the development of transportation technologyB. the connection between international transportation and telecommunicationsC. the advances of traditional service industriesD. the influence of telecommunications on international tradePassage 8Regular, moderate alcohol intake——one or two drinks a day ——appears to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease (早老性痴呆症), according to investigators from the study. The team's findings were presented at the World Alzheimer Congress 2000 meeting here.Dr. Lindsay A. Farrer of Boston University presented the findings at the Alzheime meeting. In an interview with Reuters Health, Farrer said, "Men and women who drink one or two drinks a day had a significantly lower risk of Alzheimer's disease compared to nondrinkers." The investigators reported that compared with nondrinkers, persons drinking more than one to two drinks a day had about 30% lower risk, while those who drank less than one or two drinks a day had about 50% lower risk."From a public health standpoint, it would be premature (不成熟的) to recommend a drink or two as a preventive measure until we see more results," Farrer said. He noted that the USDA (美国农业部) guidelines currently recommend one or two drinks a day, if there are no contraindications(禁忌). "This is a modest level of consumption and in terms of heart disease, this consumption has been associated with a beneficial effect."The investigators conclude that more studies are needed "to more precisely define the minimal (最小的) level and duration of exposure (to alcohol) necessary to realize a benefit." The study findings about smoking and Alzheimer risk are less clear. "There is no protective effect of smoking for men, but for women who are not carriers of (the gene) APOE 4, there was a trend toward a protective effect," the researchers report, "While among women who are carriers, smoking appears to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease."1. Which is TRUE about the findings of Dr. Lindsay A. Farrer?A. People drinking more than one to two drinks a day had about a 20% higher risk of Alzheimer's disease than those who drank lessthan one or two drinks a day.B. People drinking more than one to two drinks a day had about a 20% lower risk than those who drank less than one or two drinks aday.C. People drinking more than one to two drinks a day had about a 30% higher risk thanthose who drank less than one or two drinks a day.D. Nondrinkers had about a 30% lower risk than those drinking more than one to twodrinks a day.2. Why would it be premature to recommend a drink or two to the public?A. Because the investigators cannot get the support from the USDA guidelines.B. Because the investigators lack adequate evidence to prove the effect of moderatedrinking.C. Because it is extremely dangerous for some people to do so. .D. Because there is no clear evidence which shows the protective effect.3. According to the passage, moderate drinking _____________.A. can stop heart problemsB. may be good for one's healthC. is widely recommended by doctorsD. can solve all the health problems of man4. The study of the connection between smoking and Alzheimer risk demonstrates that_________.A. smoking can reduce Alzheimer risk as much as moderate drinkingB. men who smoke are more likely to have Alzheimer's disease than those who don'tC. smoking has no obviously positive effect on Alzheimer's diseaseD. for women who are carriers of APOE 4, smoking will surely reduce Alzheimer risk5. The main theme of the passage is ________.A. the change in recent drinking habitsB. the World Alzheimer Congress 2000 meetingC. the possible cure for Alzheimer's diseaseD. the connection between alcohol and Alzheimer's diseasePassage 9The economic effects of the terrorist attacks in the United States are spreading across the country and the world. The attacks in New YorkCity and Washington D.C. have hurt many businesses, especially the airline industry and financial markets. Many companies have been forced to dismiss thousands of workers. Many individual states are concerned about their economic future.Since the attacks on September 1lth, the stock market suffered major losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost seven percent of its value. The other major measures of the value of American stocks fell to their lowest levels in three years. Some economic experts say the drop in the value of stocks could directly affect long- term spending. They say it may cause people to lose trust in the economy and spend less money. Businesses across the country already have reported decreases in sales. Experts note that the American economy was close to a recession even before the attacks. The airline industry was probably hardest hit by the attacks. The nation's skies were temporarily closed to all air travel. Travelers remain frightened and are avoiding flying. High fuel and labour costs are making the situation worse. The airlines are losing hundreds of millions of dollars each day. There are also concerns about the economic effects of any military action. This could raise the price of oil. Production could be reduced if a large number of part time troops are called to active duty. Trade could be restricted. On Monday, the United States Federal Reserve lowered interest rates. The action was designed to support the economy by making it easier for people and businesses to borrow money. The European Central Bank took similar action. The Bush Administration and Congress are considering several tax and spending proposals. President Bush has already signed into law a forty-thousand-million dollar emergency spending plan.1. The title that can best express the main idea of the passage is __________.A. Terrorist AttacksB. It's surprising that so few tools are available to help make such a decision. I have a fairly simple method called "the Embodiment (具体化) Test", which directs that you should choose the school which best "embodies" those character traits you want your children to develop. How should a parent apply them to evaluating a school? First, decide what kind of character traits you want your children to develop. Then, look to see how different schools actually "embody" these traits ——how they manifest in the actual behavior of teachers, administrators, students and parents.Observe the teachers for more than just a few minutes. Spend a few hours. Do they embody the kind of character you want your child to be tutored in? Do they honor the individuality of each child? Are they truly passionate about teaching? Talk with parents who have children at the school. Why did they choose the school? And, of course, observe the students. Are they happy on the playground? Do they show confidence in expressing their individuality? Do they exhibit competence in the classroom? These are the true tests of a school: does it help you deliver the kind of "whole" child you've intended to raise? And it is only a "whole" child that is happy, successful, and fulfilled.Of course, information, knowledge and intellect are crucial in today's hyper-competitive world. No sane (理智的) parent or teacher would。
新视野英语4复习题PassagePassage 1Anna arrived far too early. He severely reprimanded me and wanted me to pay for any broken egg. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, apparently the manager did not.1. How old was the author when he wrote this article?A) About 8. C) About 15. B) About 23. D) About 25,2. Staff training must have a purpose, which is defined when a firm considers its training needs, which are in turn based on job descriptions and job specifications.A job description should give details of the performance that is required for a particular job, and a job specification should give information about the behavior, knowledge and skills that are expected of an employeewho works in it. His works were received enthusiastically both in England and in the United States. He was, in fact, one of the most successful writers of the time in either country, delighting a large general public and at the same time winning the admiration of fellow writers like Scott in Britain and Poe and Hawthorne in the United States. The respect in which he was held partly owing to the man himself, with his warm friendliness, his good sense, his urbanity, his gay spirits, his artisticintegrity, his love of both the Old World and the New. Now more and more people tend to define it inthis way: Advertising is the paid, non-personal, and usually persuasive presentation of goods, services and ideas by identified sponsors through various media.First, advertising is usually paid for. In an interview with Reuters Health, Farrer said, "Men and women who drink one or two drinks a day had a significantly lower risk of Alzheimer's disease compared to nondrinkers." The investigators reported that compared with nondrinkers, persons drinking more than one to two drinks a day had about 30% lower risk, while those who drank less than one or two drinks a day had about 50% lower risk."From a public health standpoint, it would be premature (不成熟的) to recommend a drink or two as apreventive measure until we see more results," Farrer said. Lindsay A. Farrer?A. People drinking more than one to two drinks a day had about a 20% higher risk of Alzheimer's diseasethan those who drank less than one or two drinks a day.B. People drinking more than one to two drinks a day had about a 20% lower risk than those who drankless than one or two drinks a day.C. The main theme of the passage is ________.A. the change in recent drinking habitsB. the World Alzheimer Congress 2000 meetingC. the possible cure for Alzheimer's diseaseD. the connection between alcohol and Alzheimer's diseasePassage 9The economic effects of the terrorist attacks in the United States are spreading across the country and theworld. The attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. have hurt many businesses, especially the airline industry and financial markets.
