A number of Chinese airlines have raised the fuel surcharge（燃油附加费）on domestic flights to an historic high despite a drop in international oil prices, China Business News (CBN) reported Tuesday.

The fuel charge for routes shorter than 800 kilometers will remain at 80 yuan per passenger. The move comes after airlines were informed by the Civil Aviation Administration of China that from Aug 1, factory price of domestic oil is set at 7,725 yuan per ton and the purchase cost for domestic airliners to buy oil from China National Aviation Fuel for their domestic flights was adjusted to 7,785 yuan per ton, the report said.
This is the first-released domestic aviation fuel price after the National Development and Reform Commission published the new pricing mechanism（机制）last month.
Although oil prices in the international crude oil market decreased, domestic oil prices rose against trend. An anonymous（匿名的）analyst told the CBN that the CIF (cost, insurance and freight) value of imports for aviation fuel was taking Singaporean oil price as a standard, which was rising.
A senior official with an airline company told CBN that raising fuel surcharge could not fully cover the rise in fuel cost. The profit margin of airline companies would finally be decided by the market demand and ticket prices.

I think that genetically modified foods should be banned. Here's why.
We have no idea of the real impact they have on our environment. While there's currently no hard proof that environmental damage is being done by genetically modified foods, there are a few worrying and suspect events that may actually be tied to these products. Most important is the sudden loss of huge numbers of bee hives. Bees are necessary to the pollination（授粉）process for soybeans and many other food crops. It's entirely possible that "the law of unintended consequences" has caused the loss of these extremely important insects.
There's also no real way to prevent cross contamination（交叉污染）between modified crops and natural crops. When neighboring fields are planted with different varieties of computable（可共存的）plants, there is a virtual guarantee of some cross pollination between the fields.
We have no idea of the real impact they have on human beings. There is already documented evidence that genetically modified foods may be the cause of higher allergy（过敏）rates in children, It's impossible to guess what other effects they may eventually cause.
I suspect that most people have forgotten the serious health scare and complete failure that occurred in 1989 that caused death or health problems for hundreds of people. The product
causing the problem was L-tryptophan（色氨酸）, an amino acid. Commercially produced L-tryptophan is developed through a bacterial fermentation（发酵）process. One maker of the supplement developed a genetically modified strain of bacteria which was capable of producing higher quantities of L-tryptophan.
Unfortunately, the process "broke" somewhere along the line with the genetically altered bacteria creating an altered form of the chemical which had destructive effects on people who consumed it.
Since there is no way to predict these kinds or changes, it's both foolish and dangerous to introduce genetically modified products into the food chain.
Finally, there's no need for genetically modified foods. Most companies that produce these products will send out statistics about higher output per acre or plants that are more tolerant to negative conditions. But the truth is that the claims, while at least partially true, are mostly rhetoric.
These companies are really just looking for a way to increase their bottom line profits. They may not actually intend to damage the ecosystem or create new health problems for people. But in my opinion it's not nice to fool Mother Nature. She may offer up a variety of severe surprises in response.

My best friend Larry is exceptionally small. Although his body is small, Larry is big at heart. He has a sharp mind, too. All the kids who know Larry like him a lot. Sometimes he gets his share of teasing, but Larry knows how to handle it.

One of the definitions of a symbol is that it is “something that stands for something else.” We can divide symbols into three kinds: the conventional, the accidental, and the universal symbol.
The conventional symbol is the best known in everyday language. The letters t-a-b-l-e stand for the thing “table” we see, touch, and use. But there is no inherent（内在的）relationship between the meaning and its letters or sound. The only reason the word symbolizes the thing is the convention of calling this particular thing by a name. The universal symbol is one in which there is an inherent relationship between the symbol and the symbolized. Take, for instance, the symbol of fire. Fire gives us the impression of power, of energy, and of lightness. When we use fire as a symbol, we describe the inner experience characterized by the same elements—the mood of energy, lightness, movement, etc.
The universal symbol is the only one in which the relationship between the symbol and that which is symbolized is not coincidental, but inherent.
