Both of Jessica's parents were lawyers and expected her to follow suit. So she went to law school, got a job at a great firm in Washington, DC, and worked as a lawyer for a decade. But her heart was never in it. “I had a big salary but no personal satisfaction,” she says.

Jessica found pleasure in the same thing that had brought her joy since joining the church choir at the age of 12. “Singing always felt like communicating something real at a spiritual and emotional level,” says Jessica. Yet she never considered it a career option.” That seemed like something people did in fairy tales, and I would never let my parents down.” She says.

So I was flying back and forth from Washington, DC to Houston to see her,” Jessica says. “I finally said, “ enough!” and quit.” While caring for her mom, Jessica made a plan. She would spend her savings and study music for a year, and then open a part-time law practice so she could pursue her passion. Before her mother passed away two years later, she encouraged Jessica to follow her dream. Her song Live This Life was inspired by her mom, and her dad came to watch her perform at clubs.

In 2012, Jessica moved to Nashville to try singing and songwriting. A decade of presenting cases in court gave her the confidence to sing for a crowd. “At 20, I would have been too shy to perform,” says Jessica.

On April 22, 2012, I jumped from an airplane 13,000 feet up. What was the purpose? It was just to overcome my fear of heights.

Seven years ago, when I went to France, I couldn't go up the Eiffel Tower because I was afraid. It seemed so high. I wanted to overcome my fear, so I could dare to go skydiving(跳伞). At first, I didn't think I could, but I finally made it.

I don't think that I could have jumped out of that plane without the encouragement of my wonderful friends and classmates—Yucel and Tatiana! It was a pity that we couldn't jump together. However, as we prepared to jump, there was something special among us—a special bond.

I made a reservation(预定) to go skydiving one week before the day of my jump. I felt nervous during the whole week, kind of blue; but mysteriously. When it was the moment to jump from the airplane, I didn't feel any fear… I just jumped! That was awesome! Awesome!

There was a whole new world and the beautiful sky. I had never seen such a beautiful world!!! First, I felt an awful acceleration(加速度), and then I felt like I was lying in the air… like a bird! I think it was an illusion, but it was wonderful!

The oncoming wind blew me strongly. It was amazing! After about 50 seconds of freefall, the parachute opened. When I landed on the ground, I felt a lack of oxygen. It was difficult to breathe in during the freefall.

I was so glad that I survived and was able to overcome my fear! Everything went well! If possible, I want to jump again. My first jump is an outstanding memory for me.

Good hobbies can bring a lot of pleasure to kids and their parents. Hobbies are things that a person likes to do in his spare time. Some kids like swimming or playing sports, while others may like quieter hobbies such as reading, music, cooking, computer games or board games Older kids who can read might enjoy the guitar or the piano, while younger ones might enjoy playing the toy drums and singing along.

Good hobbies for kids can be any type of activity that is beneficial for their over-all growth and has been proven to help them later in life, including self-confidence and any skills that they might learn. When choosing hobbies, parents should remember not to push kids too hard, otherwise they might give up before they really try the hobbies. Also you should give your kids the right to choose hobbies by themselves.

Good hobbies are something that will grow with your kids, stretching(使发挥全部本领) and challenging them enough to keep them interested, but do not take them away from their school work. Instead, good hobbies can help to improve their homework.

Also some hobbies are appropriate only for certain age groups, and can be very good for developing specific areas. For example, some musical instruments are age-specific. Older kids who can read might enjoy the guitar or the piano, while younger ones might enjoy playing the toy drums and singing along.

Take my own experience as a working parent, my daughter started a new hobby in 6th grade. It has turned out to be a good thing for her self-confidence and mental ability. So trying a wide variety of hobbies, maybe one at a time, can be a good thing for everyone.

1. It can be inferred from the passage that ___________________________

A.show how clever her daughter is

B.show the results of choosing a good hobby

C.suggest what a good hobby is

D.suggest that she is a good parent

3. The underlined word "appropriate" most probably means___________________________

A.beneficial

B. necessary

C. helpful

D. proper

4. The writer's attitude towards good hobbies is___________________________

A. doubtful

B. worried

C. neutral

Passage 4

Stamp collecting is a hobby of mine. Since I have spent a large amount of money on this hobby, a friend asked me whether I regard stamp collecting as a hobby or investment.

My interest in stamps goes back to the days when I was a little boy admiring the beautiful little pieces of paper stuck on the top right corners of envelopes. As I grew to take a more than superficial interest in stamps, my stamp collection grew in quantity and quality, especially after I started earning an income and became able to buy the stamps that I loved and could afford. I discovered the difficulty of having to store the stamps. It is expensive to buy the tools needed to properly collect, store and display stamps.

So far, my hobby has gone from being a little boy's love of beautiful pieces of paper to a more specialized(专门的) and intentional effort to collect stamps based on selected countries and themes.

I now have an outstanding collection that includes a priceless collection of a particular country's stamps. I cannot put a price to it because very few others have an interest in that country's stamps, and the only similar collection I have seen is in a museum.

So would one consider my interest in stamp collecting a hobby or investment? I think it could be seen in both ways. I enjoy stamp collecting as a hobby that could turn out to be highly profitable investment.

1. As a boy, the writer began to collect stamps because ___________________________

A.he had enough money

B.he liked the stamps

C.he thought it as an investment

D.he often received letters

2. What does the writer think his collections of stamps are like?

B.Unique.

C.Priceless.

D.Superficial.

3. What difficulty did the writer meet with in his stamp collecting?

A.Buying good stamps.

B.Having similar collections.

C.Collecting stamps based on certain themes.

D.Getting the tools needed to store stamps.

4. What does the writer mean in his last sentence?

A.He thinks stamp collecting could be more interesting.

B.He doesn't regard stamp collecting as a potential investment.

C.Stamp collecting is his hobby now, but can also bring him some money.

D.Some people regard stamp collecting as a hobby while others an investment.

Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. When a person does a certain thing again, he is driven by some unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly, then a habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to get rid of. It is therefore very important that we should pay great attention to the formation of habits. Children often form bad habits, some of which remain with them as long as they live. Older persons also form bad habits lasting as long as they live, and sometimes become ruined by them.

There are other habits which, when formed in early life, are of great help. Many successful men say that much of their success has something to do with certain habits in early life, such as early rising, honesty and so on.

Among the habits which children should not form are laziness, lying, stealing and so on. These are all easily formed habits. Unfortunately older persons often form habits which could have been avoided(避免).

We should keep away from(远离) all these bad habits, and try to form such habits as will be good for ourselves and others.

You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth,it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.

In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.

When I first studied English, I was told to say,”I am fine” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good” or “I’m tired”.

One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused . I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.

Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.

To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan(晒黑). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter”.

I was also surprised by how hardworking US students are 。In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot of work for the public and plays sports or music.

The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

Keeping fish as pets is a popular hobby. Fish take up little room, are inexpensive to feed, and provide an interesting and colorful display in any room.

A tank, or an aquarium (养鱼缸), must be chosen carefully. Many new aquarium owners buy too many fish for their tanks. Fish cannot be crowded. Two fish can live comfortably in each gallon of water, only ten fish can live in a five-gallon tank. Can you see why a goldfish would not live long in a tiny(很小的), round bowl?

If too many fish are kept together, they will not have enough oxygen (氧气) or room to swim about freely. They will have more diseases. Also, some kinds of fish cannot be kept together. They will fight and may even kill one another. As your interest in fish grows, the number of fish you have may grow, too. Then you may want to invest in another tank.

If you start with a ten-gallon aquarium, what kind of fish would be best? The two major groups of tropical (热带的) fish are those that lay eggs and those that give birth to live young. If you want to raise young fish, guppies (孔雀鱼) would be the best choice because they can produce many babies in a short time.

You can buy fish and aquariums in most pet stores. Ask the owner to help you choose the right fish. You can also find many books about tropical fish in the library.
