Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday. The day after it has been known as Black Friday.

It is the start of the holiday shopping season, and it has been the busiest shopping day of the

year in the US since 2005.

Most stores offer big sales on Black Friday. They open their doors quite early in the

These items are in great need, so people stand in long lines to get them. They may wait three to four hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price on a TV or computer, but not everybody can get one. Some people leave, disappointed.

The situation makes people worried. Some Black Friday events have been crazy. There have been fights over toys among shoppers. Some workers have even been hurt by large crowds. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan to go, you will expect large crowds and a bit of pushing.

A.Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案):

Samuel Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.

Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable .They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.

Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel.

Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes.

The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently,” It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.”

However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.

Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.

Almost every kid in this country has ever eaten Hershey chocolate. But do you know that the Hershey chocolate factory is more than one hundred years old? And do you know that the father of Hershey Chocolate, Milton Hershey, had many failures in business before he started his famous company?

Milton Hershey grew up in Pennsylvania. Before he became interested in making chocolate, he worked as a printer for a small newspaper at first, and then decided that printing was not the right job for him.

Then he worked at a candy factory in Lancaster. After working a few years there, he decided to open his own little candy business near Philadelphia. His first business failed because it was not making money. After that, he went to Denver to learn how to make caramels(焦糖). He took his new skills back to New York and worked selling candies on the street. But his second business also failed.

Finally, Milton Hershey moved back to Pennsylvania where he grew up. He then experimented with all sorts of different candies and chocolate. By 1893 he was selling a million dollars worth of caramel candy each year. Since his chocolate-flavored(巧克力味的) caramels were the best-selling, he decided to make chocolate himself.

By experimenting, Milton Hershey discovered how to make delicious chocolate. The area where he lived had a large and easy supply of milk and sugar, which helped him succeed in his chocolate business. In 1903, Milton Hershey built a huge chocolate factory and a town to go with it.

Today, the town of Hershey is still the home of the factory that Milton Hershey built. And if you ever visit, you can smell delicious chocolate smells just by driving through the town.

It’s a dog-eat-dog world and in the UK there are more and more people feeling exhausted (精疲力竭的) around to make it look like an epidemic (流行病). Every year, there is a mountain of surveys and reports on stress—the disease of the modern life.

This November 6 was Britain’s fifth annual National Stress Awareness Day. In our “grab-it-all-now” culture, three out of every ten works in the UK suffer from depression (抑郁症), stress or burnout, according to a United Nations report.

Women suffer more than men.

“Today,” says Herbert Freudenberger, author of Women’s Burnout and Burnout, “I’m seeing more women with symptoms (症状) of burnout (倦怠).”

Why is this? “In part, I think this is because of the multi-role lives they now lead—as mothers, wives and professionals.”

The same chances for men and women in our society have given women double the duties. They are tired of trying to catch careers while at the same time running their homes. Some women blame (责备) their employers, their partners, the housework, or themselves, but more than half accept that this is “just the way life is now”.

But it’s not only working mothers who are feeling exhausted. Young, unmarried professionals are also feeling the stress of increasingly competitive and globalized lifestyles.

Nicola Moule, 26, was a marketing consultant in London. She was hit by an unusual illness and could not work for a year. Moule says it was caused by burnout.

“I think my subconscious (潜意识心理活动) was telling me that what I was doing didn’t suit me. I put too much pressure on myself to be successful and trying to keep up with London life. You just get on with it.”

But if “getting on with it” also means getting ill it could be that our every development leads to our downfall.
